Dipayan Bhattacharjee: Human Rights

21 Apr

A man crossing one of the busiest streets in the city with a load on his back which he has to deliver at a shop on the opposite side of the street, and that probably weighs ten times more than his own weight.

I was out on the streets trying to get a subject to shoot for an exhibition on “Human Rights”. It would be unfair if I took all the credit for this image. It so happened that I was looking in exactly the opposite direction from this subject when all of a sudden a friend of mine who was accompanying me in the shoot, pointed her hand right over my shoulder (reaching behind me) and shouted “human rights! human rights!” I immediately turned back and saw what I saw and a part of what you are seeing right now. I barely had the time to make any adjustments on the camera (luckily I had done that before). I just raised the camera to my eye and in less than a second I had released the shutter and the moment had also passed away. Would I be a milli-second late, I could have never got this shot. Because just as I pressed the shutter and even before I could remove my eye from the viewfinder, a big car went past right across my frame, and by the time the traffic emptied out, the person had already crossed the street.

Now about this person, it would be very unfair to say that he is doing it because he can. No! He is doing it because he has to. So that he can feed his family. Employment is a major problem in India, and so people literally do/have to do anything to earn a meal. But we can clearly see that the job this person is doing is inhuman. The smallest mistake and he could get crushed under the weight. Or maybe even run-over by a car.

645 PRO app for iPhone offers access to uncompressed camera output (but not Raw)

21 Apr

Jaggr.jpg

App developer Jag.gr has launched 645 PRO, a flexible photography and processing app that provides access to the uncompressed output of the iPhone’s camera. The company grabs the processed camera output before the phone compresses it, and saves it as a TIFF file. These files, which it slightly optimistically calls ‘Developed Raw,’ can then be accessed via iTunes. The app also offers a series of features such as spot metering and exposure, focus and white balance lock, as well as a series of film simulation options and aspect ratio options, but it’s the uncompressed output that is, as far as we are aware, unique.

This is a unboxing and first look of the Nikon Nikkor 50mm D 1.4f lens. This is lens is great for portrait pictures and low light shots. The AF-Nikkor 50mm 1:1.4D is Nikon’s current version of their fast ‘standard’ prime lens, and while this specific model was introduced in 1995, the basic optical design dates back to the manual focus 50mm 1:1.4 AI of 1977. It features a traditional layout of 7 elements in 6 groups utilizing spherical surfaces only, which Nikon claims will deliver distortion-free images with superb resolution and colour accuracy, plus high contrast even at maximum aperture. The 50mm focal length classes it as a ‘standard’ lens on the FX format, with none of the ‘perspective distortion’ characteristic of wideangle or telephoto lenses, whilst on the vastly more popular and widespread DX format it behaves like a short telephoto, ideal for portraiture. The 50mm 1:1.4 is one of the older lenses in Nikon’s lineup, and this is reflected in several aspects of its design. The lens features a traditional aperture ring, which will no doubt be appreciated by photographers who grew up with mechanical manual-focus 35mm SLRs such as the FM range (although the only DSLRs on which it can actually be used are the high-end D1-D3 and D100-D700 bodies); however autofocus is ‘screw-drive’ from the camera body, and therefore won’t work on the entry-level D40, D40xThe 50mm 1:1.4 is one of the older lenses in Nikon’s lineup, and this is reflected in several aspects of its design

Canon announces EOS-1D C 4K DSLR with 8-bit 4:2:2 1080p HDMI output

13 Apr

canon_eos1dc.png

Canon has unveiled its promised 4K capable DSLR, the EOS-1D C, which can capture 4K (4096 x 2160 pixel) video at up to 24p without downscaling, from an APS-H crop of its 18MP full-frame sensor. The camera, which shares the majority of its specifications with the still-awaited 1D X, can also capture 1080p60 or 50p or output it uncompressed over its HDMI connector. Full HD can be captured from a 16:9 crop from the whole sensor, or a smaller, APS-C-like Super 35mm sub-frame that allows the use of Canon’s EF Cinema Zoom lenses. The camera will cost around €10,000 (exact price to be confirmed) and will be available from October.
