Thanks for the review. I like the 28-300, but it doesn’t have the aperture ring and I can’t use it on my older film bodies. So it wouldn’t be that useful to me. The only body I can use it on is my D300.

I am new to phtgyrph, and i wonder 1 thing very much.. i used to have a digital camera, and in digitals when you zoom more, the quality of the pictures is worse.. in those dslr’s and 200 or 300mm zoom lenses, is it the same thing ? i mean the quality will be same if i shoot a picture with this lens bot 18mm and 300mm ? thanks

Yeah, people think 4mm is not much, but 4mm in the wide end is a lot more important than 4mm in the long end.

In your opinion, what would make a better walk-around lens, the 24-120 f/4 or 28-300? I’m going to buy the D600 and wondering which one to get.

i am going to buy that old AF 70-300mm F4-5.6 lens for my D5100. i know it doesn’t do autofocus on it but at this price i can not get a good zoom lens for my d5100 so i am going to buy it

Hi can this be used on a DX-format body without any side-effects, or is it advisable to just go for a DX telephoto?

I feel very split about this lens, the range is superb for a walk-around lens, but I miss the 24mm on the wide end. Some may think it’s not much but imo it does a difference. Well, Nikon have also the 24-120 f4..

well this is a lens, some people call it heaven or earth, but remember “when you try to put both your feet in two different boat, you will end up in water”.. the only demerits with this lens it kind of become constant aperture lens of f5.6 above 100mm,, which sometimes is irritating, cause you want more light to get a faster action shot. so choose your priority, if you are trying to get close to pro,,,then you will end up in water as i have said,,

Hey Matt which would you say is better? This 28-300mm or the Tamron 70-300mm that you reviewed some time ago? The Tamron seems really good for the price, what do you think?

All I have right now is the d5100 kit lens, the 35 and 50 f/1.8 lenses. I think my next lens is going to be something like this. I want stabilization of some sort, and some reach for taking wildlife photos. But with the lenses I have, I haven’t decided if I want to just get something that starts at say 50 to 70mm and get faster lens for the same money.

I rented both those lenses to see if I should buy one. I didn’t see much difference other than the extra range on the 28-300. If you don’t need the range it probably won’t be worth it to upgrade.

I rented one of these for my Nikon D7000 a few weeks ago. For my purposes (landscapes) it works great. There is rumored to be a 18-300mm DX lens to be announced soon so I’ll be waiting to learn more about it if it materializes. If that doesn’t happen in the next few months I’ll be taking another look at the 28-300mm FX lens.

Is it worth an upgrade from the 18-200mm f/3.5 - 5.6 VRII? I only just got it 6 months ago
