They should also make the D400D…the last D standing for Dildo. You know, a giant HD shaped nikon DSLR shaped like a dildo with weather stripping and auto vibration…35 jolts per second. Who gives a rats ass about video in a DSLR. U

Put it all in one. If you dont want to take video,(1)go to the home depot buy a small screw driver (2) use the screwdriver to pry off the video record button (3) now you have a dslr that only takes pictures!

a good idea on paper, but it would be poor economy of scale if they did that. best to keep it housed in one body. were not dealing with cars here. the main function of a camera is to take pictures. if not by a digi cam. capice?

Ok instant subscribe to you, you give news better then others and are closer to the subject in time (New nikons)
A new body is good but i have to remember that good lenses come first, bodies later.

That’s a nice idea-but now that they are putting video in all the other slr bodies, I doubt they’ll separate it now that they are getting a lot of business from it. I have a D300 because I had no reason to upgrade, but I don’t see the D400 doing anything but moving way forward from where we are now. I predict it will include video, and it will be 1080p, and they will do it the first time, they won’t wait for a D400v or D400s or whatever they want to call it.

    – but Nikon already has the swivel screen in inventory to make the D5100. all they have to do is use it on the Nikon D400. 🙂

I have a D300s but would kill for a swivel screen. I would say why not have the same D400 body WITH the swivel screen BUT have the following option:
    1. Video chip and software user replaceable/up-gradable. OR – provide a battery grip which ADD more advanced features to the video for the D400 & D800.
    2. Video light integrated into a new flash like a SB-900v.
    3. Additional attachment options with stereo microphone – non-hot shoe.
    4. User replaceable image sensor!

Wow… Who doesn’t like swivel screens? The only reason I can think of is that it makes them SLIGHTLY smaller. Otherwise, my advice is “Just don’t swivel it!”

As a supply chain professional, I have to correct your comment on not much cost to make two lines of camera, especially when hardware is different, in this case the tilt screen. Majority of the supply chain cost / cost to put the product on consumer’s hand is inventory cost. Long story short, having two model will increase inventory level through decrease of risk pooling and increase of bull whip effect. My rough estimate result in 20-35% increase of overall cost which will transfer to us

To be honest I couldn’t care less for video, I shoot nikon for better image quality. If it’s got video I might use it on occasion but the reality is nikon are an image company not a video company. Cannon however has been a video company for most of it’s life, hence they seem to be more focused on video then matching nikon’s still image quality.

I also see your point. I’m also a nikon user. Maybe nikon can’t really compete head-to-head with canon in terms of price value and camera features. D700 and 5d mk ii here at philippines almost at the same price. But still in terms of price value and camera features hands down to 5d mk ii. Also the 5d mk ii is year ’08. yet the newest Nikon D7000 is year ’11 is still behind from 5d mk ii in terms of video.

why buy a body that might cost a little more for a better video when your set straight forward for photography only. if you want to be a film maker go buy an expensive canon otherwise i think nikon is actually doing a pretty cool thing for photographers which gives them more options. just giving my 2 cents 🙂

I don’t think nikon have to make another body for video. I think they have to fight for 5d mk ii. photography + videography in one body. Even now it’s 2011 and the nikon has still no answer to 5d mk ii. I dont know if they really can’t make a camera like 5d mk ii or they just have other reasons why they are not answering to 5d mk ii.
Final: I don’t think nikon have to make another camera that specializes in video, It will be better if they will make it in one body. Canon does it, why can’t nikon

    – Well, the Nikon D3x and Nikon D3s are virtually the same camera, just with a different sensor. The only reason the D3s has video, is that it was updated from the original D3 which did not have video. If the D3x had got an update, I’m sure they would’ve put video in it too, as I’m fairly sure the D4x will have video.

That would be a great idea, I won’t buy a DSLR with a swivel screen because it means re-arranging the buttons from where I am used to. Also this would give them a high end video DSLR without ruining the legacy left from the D300s
