Part 1 – K5 vs D300s vs 7D

14 Dec

So you want to be a professional photographer. Here’s my choices for lenses, cameras and gear based on APS-C choices from Pentax, Nikon and Canon. There are many possibilities, but I’d feel pretty comfortable at any paying gig with any of these systems in my bag! (Music by www.danosongs.com and all photography by Edward Thomas. Thanks!)

Hey, dumb question would a Niklon lens fit on to a Pentax?

Nikkor 17-55: sealed construction, faster AF, better overall IQ than Pentax. But wait, the only important thing for a professional photographer is the IS presence, ok?
Tamron 70-200 is plastic slow shit, compared to the Nikkor 70-200. That’s it.
I can use Metz on Nikon or Canon too, so what?
Old D300s still kicks ass every new Pentax when it comes to AF performance (poor 11 AF points). But I bet you’re gonna tell me, that professionals use LV, so the PDAF performace doesn’t matter, right?

DA*16-50/2.8 is stabilized on Pentax, ok? No chance to get the same on Nikon with 17-55/2.8 unless you use horrible tamron 17-50/2.8 VC or quite expensive unsealed sigma 17-50/2.8, ok?
Nikkor 70-200 totally beats tamron.. in high price battle for sure.

Metz58 costs the same like Pentax AF540fgz, btw. AF540 is the most powerful existing flash unit for hot-shoe. Only older Minolta AF600 has the same guide number at wide zoom.

D300 is dead today and is NOT weather sealed on K5 level.

D300s beats K-5 totally when it comes to AF, ok?
Nikkor 17-55/2.8 beats totally Pentax 16-50/2.8, ok?
Nikkor 70-200 beats totally Tamron 70-200, ok?
By the way, the Sigma, Tamron and Metz can be used on the Nikon body too, so what’s your point actually?! Are you really one of those Pentax sick fanboys with crazy arguments?

BTW, D7000 is weather sealed and you tell me, that cable release is a “professional accessory”? Dude, you can’t be serious.

also it isn’t viable when you put down a $800 tamron for the pentax and $2000+ 70-200 2.8’s for the canon and nikon when they are available for them as well?

flashes as well “i put the metz’s down cause i think they are better than the pentax’s” you’re playing this review and comparison like a pick and mix, just so everything favours your cheap k-5….

Yes, Tamron is sharp. 50-135 is easy to fail smd.

Usually, quid means British pounds. Awesome discussion, though, good points. I’ve gone mirrorless, but if I was going back to a DSLR, it would certainly be with a K-5 and a handful of limited primes, thanks to it’s DR, and your videos. Cheers.

I am not sure what you mean by “cast….” does this mean nikon and cannon make better photo?

The real question is why does Nikno and Canon cast so much MORE than Pentax… See what I mean? – Edward

Well, if I had to have only one or the other I’d go with the Tamron for the extended range. But at $1500 for both, that’s still saving at least $500 off of either the Canon or Nikon one lens so really the answer get both! – Edward

You’d pick the Tamron 70-200 over the Pentax 50-135? Really?

Working in GBP or £ – I’d say the D7000 is better than the 300s and 7D and on par with the K5. £1000. I’d take the Samyang Fisheye over the Nikon 10.5 and it’s £225. I’d take the Yongnuo YN560 flashes over the SB aswell and they are £50 each. I’ve got 3 and even just paired up with poverty wizards at £40 i’ve had about 2000 pops out of them and they’ve never missed. TTL isn’t worth the money IMO.
