dombowerphoto.blogspot.com as you change your Q scale settings from -16 (highest quality) to -1 you lower the bit rate of the video, meaning you get more video time, but lower quality video, at -16 my memory card cant keep up for more than 1 second, around -9 my card can do fine but if i am doing a long video i feel it is ok to go to -6 on the q scale. going to Postive 16 it is just a mess, it is only about 1mb a second speed, very very slow and very poor quality. This was shot on the canon 550d with firmware 0.2.0 as of March 22nd 2011

have you seen those ML test/promo vids, where the quality is absolutely lush…is that achieved purely from messing with the Qscale, with the only drawback being increased video size?

BTW, it’s not measured in MegaBYTES per second, but rather MegaBITS per second.
1 Megabyte = 8 Megabits

how can you get longer recording time with great quality. And what fw default (reboot) vs 1.0 fw default. These are options I see on my ML.

which mode is better CBR mode at a high bitrate, or q-scale at a high number? Someone please respond. What’s a good sd card for this. I have a 16gb card class 6. Recording keeps stopping. i also have an pny 8gb class 10. still keeps stopping.

when i film with my canon 550d 16GB integral ultima class 10 card at -10+ my footage on play back seems choppy/laggy! I did have a low battery but i doubt having a low battery makes a difference does it? was it the battery or would it be the card?

Right, and I hear some folks like it at -16, but you better have a class 10 SanDisk Extreme otherwise expect “movie recording automatically stopped”! Thanks for the reply 🙂

i think you are spot on. i happily film at 25Mbps and cant see any drop in quality either. but i guess if you are shooting for a film i would have it at -10

According to ML’s Wiki, a Q-scale rating of -9 produces a max VBR of 42Mbps. Canon’s default is 36Mbps (a Q-scale of -8). According to Wikipedia’s chart of video bit rates, 29.4Mbps is the max for an HD DVD and 40 Mbit/s is max for Blu-ray Disc (using MPEG2, AVC or VC-1 compression). So anything above -9 is going to be just fine. I think you might just be splitting hairs between -10 and -16. Could just be my inexperience but I can’t see a diff. between -10 and -16…..thoughts, anyone?
