Video: How to build a custom Raspberry Pi ‘Becca Cam’ with zero coding experience

06 Jul

Becca Farsace, Video Director at The Verge, has shared a video detailing how she built her own Raspberry Pi camera with no coding experience.

The nine-minute video is a fun overview of what it took to turn a Raspberry Pi 4 computer into a fully-functioning interchangeable-lens camera with the help of Raspberry Pi’s new HQ Camera add-on, a three-inch touchscreen, a spare lens or two from Becca’s 16mm Bolex camera and a sacrificial Ninoka nk-700 film camera.

Since Becca isn’t too familiar with Python, the coding language needed to build apps for the Raspberry Pi 4 computer, she had more than a few hurdles to clear before she could get shooting. However, with the help of her Instagram followers, the camera’s manual and plenty of perseverance over the course of a few days, she was able to get a program up and running that allowed her to capture images.

The resulting ‘Becca Cam’ is far from intuitive (particularly when the keyboard is required) and quality of images captured with the camera isn’t going to blow anyone away, but for a 1.0 product built with zero coding knowledge, it’s impressive.

Becca shared links to all of the materials and code used to create the camera (aside from the frame, which was hacked together from an old film camera), so if you’re feeling like making your own camera, follow the video link and pick up the required components.

These unseen photos of Ground Zero following the 9/11 attacks were salvaged from rotting CDs

25 Jun

Archivists Dr. Johnathan Burgess and Jason Scott have published 2,400 previously unseen images of Ground Zero in the days following the 9/11 attacks. The images were found on old CDs purchased from a house clearance sale in New York and shared by a ‘partner’ of Dr. Burgess because it’s ‘about doing what’s right for humanity,’ according to a statement he made to the BBC.

Dr. Burgess said the CDs were in poor condition after so many years in storage, and that a recovery service was used to retrieve some of the photos. At this time, the duo hasn’t been able to locate the photographer or any family members who may know them. Scott says the images were captured with the 3MP Canon PowerShot G1.

The full archive of images has been made available to the public via Flickr. The photos appear to have been taken by a construction worker in the aftermath of the attacks. Emergency and construction workers are featured prominently in the images, as well as debris from the fallen buildings, machinery, dust and the surrounding New York City skyline, including multiple aerial shots.

Dr. Burgess suggests that ‘people who are moved by [the images] should consider donating to a worthy cause of their choice,’ according to the BBC report.

Vemödalen vs. Zero to One

11 Nov

When behind the camera I often ask myself if I’m incrementally adding to an existing body of work or if I’m truly creating something new. Two pieces of work recently released bring my internal struggle to words and images. Vemödalen, embedded below, and Peter Thiel’s new book Zero To One.

The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows defines vemödalen as:

n. the frustration of photographing something amazing when thousands of identical photos already exist—the same sunset, the same waterfall, the same curve of a hip, the same closeup of an eye—which can turn a unique subject into something hollow and pulpy and cheap, like a mass-produced piece of furniture you happen to have assembled yourself.

It is inevitable with 7 billion people on the planet that no one idea will remain unique for any more than a minute if not a fraction of as second, but an idea pivots its success on execution. Even ideas that take us to something new (zero to one… not incremental) can be talked about casually, but seldom are they acted upon. Thus a creatives challenge is two fold to identify a great idea and to execute.

When you view Vemödalen or read Zero to One perhaps you’ll find yourself asking more of yourself, both to think creative and to act upon that inspiration. It has long been the bane of my creative life and I’d imagine I’m not alone.

Zero Mileage: 12 Abandoned Automobile Dealerships

23 Jun

[ By Steve in Abandoned Places & Architecture. ]

abandoned Le Baron convertible Chicago car dealership

The showroom floors are bare and the alluring aroma of new car smell has long since dissipated from these dozen down-in-the-dumps abandoned auto dealerships.

Aloha & Mahalo

abandoned car dealer Hawaii

“I say hello you say goodbye,” to quote The Beatles, also suits this lonely and abandoned car dealership somewhere in Hawaii. That’s because “aloha” means both hello or goodbye in Hawaiian, depending on the context in which it’s used. In the context of the image above, we’re guessing it means goodbye.

Signs Of The Times

abandoned Valley Dodge dealership 2012

abandoned Valley Dodge dealership

The former Valley Dodge on Route 202 in Wellsville, Connecticut, was one of many automobile dealerships victimized by the Great Financial Crisis of 2008. The telling pair of images above succinctly document the decay of the abandoned dealership in just two frames. Kudos to Flickr users Greg (63vwdriver) and MJBarnes for posting the images taken on December 11th of 2012 and March 9th of 2013, respectively.

Not Your Father’s Olds Dealership

abandoned Oldsmobile dealership Beulah North Dakota

Beulah, North Dakota’s motto is “Small Town Appeal… Big City Looks” and the tiny (pop. 3,304 in 2013) town’s former Oldsmobile dealership certainly looks like a big-city operation. Unfortunately for Beulah, neither its appeal nor its looks were enough to keep the local Olds store afloat when GM pulled the plug on the brand back in 2004. These days, the dealership quietly deteriorates through bone-chilling prairie winters and pleasant, Simpsons-sky days like the one above, perfectly captured by The Daily Rant.

Le Barren

Call it a modern mystery: a mid-eighties Chrysler LeBaron convertible sits in solitary splendor (not counting the flat tires) amidst the gathering dust and empty soda cans inside an abandoned suburban Chicago auto dealership. That was in 2010… two years later, the author of the above photos returned to the row of deserted dealerships to find the lonely LeBaron still in place, tires slightly flatter, unmolested by all but the inexorable passage of time. We have to assume K-cars are even more unpopular now than they were then.

Windows Zero: 9 Telecom Infrastructure Buildings

03 Feb

[ By Steve in Architecture & Offices & Commercial. ]

Telecom Infrastructure Buildings
They may not have windows, workers or office space yet telecom infrastructure buildings are an essential part of the urban megalopolis. Their lack of an obvious human presence, though, has made these towering, nondescript boxes of wire and machinery the subjects of mystery, wonderment and conspiracy theories.

AT&T Long Lines Building (33 Thomas Street), Manhattan

The AT&T Long Lines Building, or as it’s known now by its street address: 33 Thomas Street was designed by architect John Carl Warnecke and opened in 1974. The building was built to last with the expectation that its granite-over-concrete exterior and integral power generators would protect the machinery inside from a nuclear explosion.

The 550 ft (167.5 m) tall building has only 29 floors because each story has ceilings 18 ft (5.5 meters) high. Odd tubular protrusions on the 10th and 29th floors are for the purpose of ventilating the considerable heat that can build up inside. While often praised for its no-nonsense style that complements other buildings in the area, the stark Brutalist design is a favorite of photographers who wait for lighting conditions that accentuate its “inhuman” aspects.

AT&T Long Lines Building, Kansas City

Another AT&T Long Lines Building, another city, a different design philosophy. Opened in 1976, AT&T’s Kansas City, Missouri telecom building once housed 1,700 workers who manned call centers and helped route the bulk of the region’s long distance phone calls. These days a mere handful of employees rub shoulders with AT&T’s switching equipment in the underutilized yellow brick fortress.

At 298 ft (91 meters) and rising 26 stories, the AT&T Long Lines Building at 1425 Oak St. is the 16th-tallest building in Kansas City, so it’s got that going for it, which is nice.

Digital Beijing Building, China

While the USA is still the champ when it comes to wired and wireless telecommunications, the new century has brought new challengers such as China where the Digital Beijing Building offers a new perspective on buildings for non-humans. Designed by Chinese architect Pei Zhu of Studio Pei Zhu/Urbanus, the building opened in 2007 only to be immediately overshadowed by the spectacular neighboring structures built for the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympic Games.

The 187 ft (57 meter) tall building wasn’t built for show and compared to its neighbors not everyone is a fan of the structure, either. “It is shaped, cheesily, like a mainframe computer from the 1960s, cut with linear glass strips evoking a circuit board,” sneers Tom Dyckhoff of Times Online. “Four gloomy stone slabs, divided by glass atria, do an excellent Orwellian Ministry of Truth impression. It’s slightly less spirit-crushing inside.” Harsh.
