Sony Xperia 5 II is a smaller, slightly cheaper Xperia 1 II with 4K/120p recording

17 Sep

Sony has unveiled the Xperia 5 II, successor to the Xperia 5 and a notch below the flagship Xperia 1 II in the lineup. It includes many camera features of the Xperia 1 II, but in a smaller form-factor and at a slightly lower price point. Headline features include 4K/120p recording for high resolution slow motion video, 20 fps continuous shooting with autofocus and auto exposure and a 6.1″ OLED screen with 120Hz refresh rate. The Xperia 5 II will cost $ 950 when it ships in December – less pricey than the $ 1200 Xperia 1 II, but a notable increase over the Xperia 5’s $ 800 introductory MSRP.

The Xperia 5 mark II’s triple-camera array is borrowed from the Xperia 1 II (minus the time-of-flight camera), comprising 16mm, 24mm and 70mm cameras. The main 24mm module features a 1/1.7″ sensor and is capable of 4K/120p 10-bit recording for 5x slow-motion video at 24p. Like the flagship, it shoots up to 20 fps bursts with AE/AF, offers Eye AF for both humans and animals, and offers Raw + JPEG shooting.

Sony is also introducing support for USB tethering of the Xperia 5 and a7-series cameras, starting with the a7S III. The Xperia 5 can be tethered to the camera to transfer photos and videos to the user’s intended FTP, a feature designed to make life easier for sports shooters and photojournalists who need to transmit images quickly from the field.

The 6.1″ FHD+ HDR OLED maintains its unconventional 21:9 wide aspect ratio, and in addition to its 120Hz refresh rate, boasts a 240Hz touch scanning rate. The device offers IP65/68 dust and moisture protection, is powered by a 4000 mAh battery and includes a 3.5mm headphone jack.

The Xperia 5 II will be available for pre-sale on September 29th for $ 950; it is scheduled to ship on December 4th. The phone will not support 5G for customers in the U.S., but 5G will be supported in certain other regions.

While many other manufacturers are going all-in on computational tricks and tons of megapixels with their flagship smartphones, Sony is betting on a more ‘back-to-basics’ approach with its Xperia 1 Mark II. Each of its three cameras comes with just 12MP, but they’re pretty big pixels, as a result – especially on the 1/1.7″-sized main sensor. We took the Xperia to a few of our favorite locales (while maintaining social distancing, of course) to get an idea of what you can expect in terms of image quality from those jumbo pixels.

Sony provides an in-depth look at the Sony Xperia 1 II camera tech

30 Apr

Sony first announced its triple-camera-equipped Xperia 1 Mark II flagship phone in February but users around the world are still waiting for the commercial release of the device. Once available, with its photo-centric design that borrows a number of features from Sony’s Alpha series cameras, the Xperia 1 Mark II should be a compelling option for mobile photographers. Now the company has shared additional information on camera technology and features in Japan.

In its primary camera the new Sony offers the same 12MP resolution as its predecessor. However, those pixels are distributed across a larger sensor surface. The Mark II’s 1/1.7″ primary sensor is quite a bit bigger than the Mark 1’s 1/2.6″ variant, but still falls short of some other flagship phones. The Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro and Huawei P40 Pro for example come with 1/1.33″ and 1/1.28″ sensors respectively.

The Xperia 1 Mark II comes with a larger sensor than its predecessor.

However, Sony is deploying a different strategy to most of its direct rivals. Both rival phones mentioned above use much higher resolution sensors and pixel-binning technology to reduce noise levels and capture images with a wide dynamic range.

Sony bets on ‘traditional’ large 1.8µm pixels, which, according to the company, make the new sensor 50 percent more light sensitive than its predecessor and results in improved low light performance.

The 12MP sensor offers faster read-out than the 108MP Quad-Bayer sensors used in some competitors.

Sony says the conventional design of the sensor offers faster read-out speeds than the pixel-binning Quad-Bayer technology deployed in most current high-end phones. The entire sensor can be read out in 10ms versus 32ms for a 12MP image from a Quad-Bayer sensor.

The sensor features 247 phase detection points.

This speed is necessary to enable the Mark II’s 20fps continuous shooting with autoexposure and autofocus. Dual-Pixel AF is embedded into the sensor and an additional 3D time-of-flight (ToF) sensor supports the system. Overall, the camera can use 247 phase detection points on the image sensor and 43,200 points from the ToF sensor to perform AF calculations.

The AF also uses data from a 3D time-of-flight sensor.

This is done by Sony’s BIONZ X branded image processor which performs 60 AE/AF calculations per second to keep subjects in focus and the image well exposed. The new phone also comes with the Eye AF feature that we already saw on the original Xperia 1. However, now it can lock on to animal eyes in addition to human eyes.

The ultra-wide and tele lenses of the triple-camera setup cannot quite keep up with the primary shooter in terms of read-out speed and processing, though. They both offer continuous shooting at 10fps with AE/AF enabled and AE/AF calculations are performed at a slower rate of 30 per second.

Sony says the triple-camera offers the same flexbility as a camera system with 16-35, 24-70 and 70-200mm lenses.

This said, with equivalent focal lengths of 74mm for the tele and 16mm for the ultra-wide, both cameras make nice additions to the primary camera’s 24mm-equivalent lens, covering a wide range of shooting situations. Sony goes as far as comparing the lenses in the Xperia 1 Mark II triple camera to a full-frame lens set including a 16-35mm wide-angle, a 24-70m standard zoom and a 70-200mm tele-zoom. Those lenses should have you prepared for almost anything, and according to the company the same is true for the phone’s triple-cam.

To make the new device even more attractive to serious photographers it comes with Sony’s new Photography Pro app, which features Shutter and Aperture priority modes in addition to a bunch of other manual controls you would find on the company’s mirrorless cameras. Most camera apps offer some sort of manual controls these days, usually in the shape of a separate ‘Pro mode’, but it looks like Sony is taking things a step further than most.

The Photography Pro app offers a range of manual modes and settings.

The Xperia 1 Mark II is also the first Sony smartphone to feature a ZEISS lens. ZEISS lenses can be found on many of Sony’s Cybershot compact cameras and are also available with an E-mount for Alpha cameras. ZEISS lenses featured on Nokia phones previously but the new Sony is the first to come with the German lens maker’s T* anti-reflective coating to reduce glare and ghosting effects.

It’s good to see Sony, which is the only current smartphone manufacturer that also runs a sizeable camera operation, creating more synergies and technology interchange between its mobile and Alpha divisions. Now we just need to wait for the device to appear in the market and see if the camera can compete with the best. According to rumors that could happen as soon as next week, starting in Taiwan.

Sony’s speedy Xperia 1 Mark II shoots 20 fps with AF/AE technologies borrowed from the a9

24 Feb

Sony has announced the Xperia 1 Mark II, with improvements to the Mark I’s rear triple camera array and class-leading burst shooting mode. Technology borrowed from the company’s professional Alpha 9 full-frame interchangeable lens camera allows the Xperia 1 Mark II to shoot at up to 20 fps while maintaining continuous autofocus and auto exposure. Sony’s excellent real-time eye AF tracking for human and animal subjects is included and, like the Sony a9, autofocus and auto exposure calculations are performed at 60 times a second.

The Mark II maintains a similar triple camera to its predecessor’s, but with some notable enhancements. The main camera now uses a 12MP 1/1.7″ sensor, which is pretty big by smartphone standards, collecting nearly 50% more light than the 1/2.55″ sensors found in competitors from Apple and Google. It has a slightly wider 24mm equiv. F1.7 lens in front of it, which is optically stabilized.

It now uses a 12MP 1/1.7″ sensor –
pretty big by smartphone standards

The main camera uses dual photo-diode phase detection AF with 70% coverage, and a new 3D time-of-flight (ToF) camera helps improve autofocus performance, particularly in low light. No word yet on whether or not the ToF camera is used to improve the depth map generated from the dual pixel sensor for the camera’s bokeh mode.

The telephoto module is now more ‘telephoto’, with a 70mm equivalent field-of-view, up from 52mm. The lens aperture remains the same at F2.4, and only sparse phase-detection, as opposed to dual pixel, autofocus is available, meaning you can expect some hunting, particularly as light levels drop. Optical image stabilization is available on this module. A 16mm equivalent F2.2 camera provides an ultra-wide field-of-view, and the dual pixel design of its 1/2.6″ sensor allows it to achieve fast autofocus performance.

Neither of these modules offers 20 fps burst rates or 60 fps AF/AE calculations, nor does either support real-time eye AF for humans and animals. It’s worth noting though that the Xperia 1 did support eye tracking for humans with its telephoto module, so we suspect some form of eye detection AF will be available on the 70mm equiv. camera, particularly as it would benefit the phone’s bokeh mode.

The Xperia 1 provided a user interface tailored to pro video shooters, and the Mark II introduces a similar UI for still photographers. Photo Pro mode as Sony is calling it doesn’t replace the standard, more simplified camera app, but is offered in addition to it, with direct touch access to exposure settings. Here Sony is aiming for a consistent user experience across its phones and ILCs. Other UI improvements have been made; for example, you can now simply tap on either a human or an animal in your scene to instantly switch between human and animal eye detection.

The Xperia 1 Mark II maintains the unusually wide display format that the Mark I used, offering a 21:9 6.5″ HDR OLED. Sony claims a color gamut wider than DCI-P3, and a peak brightness of 1000 and 400 nits for 1% and 100% APL (average picture level), respectively, for HDR content. Direct white balance controls are now available for the display, allowing you to choose a desired correlated color temperature. A new ‘motion blur reduction’ mode allows the display to be driven at a 90Hz refresh rate, for smoother scrolling and animation, and Sonly also claims the display has enhanced touch sensitivity, which may mean a higher touch sampling rate.

‘Photo Pro’ mode allows you to see and access common shooting settings like shutter speed, AF mode, and even emulate buttons like AF-ON and AEL. To switch between human and animal eye AF, simply tap on the desired subject.

On the video front, Sony has added 60p and 25p frame rate options to its class-leading 4K HDR mode, making it one of only a handful of smartphones on the market capable of true 4K/60p HDR capture. Like the Mark I, video is encoded using HEVC, with an HLG gamma curve and 10-bit encoding in the wide BT.2020 color space. And whereas previously only center-priority AF was available in video, the Mark II allows you to tap on any subject to rack focus to it. No word yet on whether face or subject tracking are available when shooting video.

In a rare move for modern phone makers, Sony has decided to bring back the 3.5mm headphone jack. The Mark II also offers two front-firing stereo speakers, and Dolby Atmos playback is available. Sony claims the signal:noise ratio of audio has been improved, with a ten-fold reduction in noise. The Xperia 1 Mark II is also the world’s first smartphone to feature 360 degree reality audio.

The Mark II retains its predecessor’s IP 65/58 rating, meaning it’s completely sealed against dust, and will also withstand lower pressure spray as well as total immersion in water. Gorilla Glass 6 protects both the front and rear of the device.

Sony Xperia Pro development

Also under development is an Xperia Pro, which will essentially be an Xperia 1 Mark II with 5G mmWave connectivity optimized for fast upload speeds to assist in a professional workflow. Sony says the device can be used as a high-resolution, color-accurate monitoring device for a dedicated camera via HDMI connection, and will also be able to beam high bit-rate video feeds for broadcast.

No pricing or availability has been given for the Xperia Pro or Xperia 1 Mark II at this time.

Photographer Brandon Hill shoots portraits with the Sony Xperia 1 and Xperia 5

23 Dec

Sony’s Xperia 1 and Xperia 5 smartphones offer powerful photo and video features, including advanced face and eye-detection autofocus technologies inherited from Sony’s Apha-series mirrorless cameras. Sony’s Eye-AF works by analyzing the scene in front of the camera in real-time, and identifying and focusing on human eyes. If the camera or subject move, detected eyes and faces are tracked within the frame. A green square shows that an eye has been identified.

Portrait and commercial photographer Brandon Hill took the Sony Xperia 1 and Xperia 5 to House Studios recently, here in Seattle, to see how they performed. During a busy portrait shoot, Brandon worked with model and athlete Krista Armstead to put together several shooting scenarios, including indoor and outdoor lighting, and even a trampoline, to test the phones’ high-speed shooting and 4K video capabilities.

Sony announces Xperia 5 with triple-cam setup, Eye AF and 6.1″ 21:9 CinemaWide display

05 Sep

Sony has announced the Xperia 5, the latest addition to its flagship smartphone lineup. The new phone brings technology from Sony’s Xperia 1 smartphone and puts them in a slightly more manageable size.

The Xperia 5 features a 21:9 CinemaWide 6.1-inch Full HD+ OLED display with BT.2020 color accuracy. The screen uses technologies from Sony’s Bravia TV systems to help bring High Dynamic Range (HDR) technologies to its latest smartphone. Another neat feature of the Xperia 5 is a new Creator mode, a feature inspired by Sony’s Master Series TV systems that adds 10-bit tonal gradation (8 bit display with 2 bit software smoothing) to the display, which makes it possible to support the ITU-R BT.2020 color space in addition to CDI-P3 and Illuminant D65.

Sony has also added Dolby Atmos surround sound technology to add ‘breathtaking realism’ to audio coming from the device, whether you’re using headphones or the built-in stereo speakers on the Xperia 5.

On the imaging front, the Xperia 5 uses a triple-camera setup with 12-megapixel sensors behind each of the three lenses: a 16mm, a 26mm and a 52mm (35mm equivalent). Sony doesn’t mention the apertures of the 16mm and 52mm lens but notes the main 26mm lens features an F1.6 aperture that works alongside the Dual Photo Diode image sensor with 1.5?m pixel pitch for better low-light capabilities. The imaging system uses a Sony Bionz X image processor for mobile as well as Optical SteadyShot image stabilization to get the most from the camera unit.

Sony has also brought its Eye AF technology to the Xperia 5, as well as continuous burst shooting up to 10 frames per second with Auto Focus and Auto Exposure calculations taking place at up to 30 frames per second.

The Sony Xperia 1 was announced back in February but has become available to buy in the shops only this week. It’s Sony’s first triple-camera phone and comes with a range of enticing imaging features, including a 21:9 OLED display with 4K resolution, 4K HDR video as well as ultra-wide and tele-cameras.

In order to highlight the camera’s video capabilities Sony has now released several promotional videos, explaining some of the more advanced new features.

Cinema Pro is a set of features aimed at mobile videographers. Users can choose from a range of color presets and footage can be recorded at a cine-compatible 24 frames per second and 21:9 aspect ratio. You can also shoot with any of three lenses and select manual shutter speeds.

Optical Steady Shot is another highlighted video feature. It combines electronic and optical image stabilization for smooth and shake-free footage. The results in the sample clip below look pretty impressive but we have seen similar results on other high-end devices. That said, Sony claims the Xperia 1 comes closest to ‘cinema-grade’ results.
