Your First 100,000 Photos are Your Worst

Henri Cartier-Bresson once said that your first 10,000 photos are your worst. The point of that statement was that photography ought to be an art that is perfected with practice, hard work and repetition. It takes time before a photographer feels as one with their camera. Over time though you eventually learn your camera backwards and forwards, the two of you are old friends and you handle it with the skill of an expert. Likewise, after enough experience you begin to develop your own style. You find what works for you compositionally. Light and color take central stage as you do what you do best, naturally, borne out of habit and experience.

I would change Cartier-Bresson’s quote in the modern digital age to say that your first 100,000 photos are your worst. Maybe it really ought to be your first 1,000,000 photos are your worst.

My love affair with photography began early when I was given my first camera, a Kodak Instamatic at the age of 7 or so. When I really became most interested in photography though was at the age of 15 when my parents bought me my first SLR. It was a Sigma camera with a zoom lens. The very first photos I took with that camera were the Summer between 9th and 10th grade when I rode my bicycle across America. I did the trip with a group called Wandering Wheels out of Taylor University. I rode my bicycle from Lincoln City, Oregon to Rehoboth Beach, Delaware over the course of about six weeks. It was one of the best things I did in my youth and seeing and photographing America in my youth has carried on with me as I continue documenting America now at the ripe old age of 48.

On my coast to coast trip in 1983 I shot Kodak slide film. I had the slides developed back in 1983 but I’ve never scanned or published any of these images. Today I finally got around to spending some time with Epson V700 and scanned in the 100 or so images I took on that trip. The slides are old, dirty and scratched, but here are some of my first 100,000 images.

Death Valley: One of America’s Worst National Parks?

I recently came across an article by Bill Fink on Yahoo titled “Our Tax Dollars Pay for What? The Nation’s Worst National Parks.” In all fairness, there are some pretty lame national parks and monuments, I’m not going to argue that. Certainly a few of them ended up on this list as expected. But when I got to number five on the list and saw Death Valley National Park, I was astonished.

Fink writes in the brief article that the best way to simulate a visit to Death Valley is to “heat a pan full of sand to about 200 degrees, then pour it on your head,” and that “when it’s not hot [in Death Valley] it’s bitterly cold, so at least you get some variety in your misery.”

I’ve been to Death Valley National Park five times now. Twice on photography trips and three times to lead workshops through the park. All three workshops in Death Valley sold out in less than 24 hours. So either I (and my students) have terrible taste in beauty or Bill Fink doesn’t know what he’s talking about. In fact, after reading through his brief writeup a few times, I’d wager that Bill hasn’t even been to the park. If that’s true, it just goes to show how far we’ve come from true journalism in today’s age of click bait articles.

Death Valley is, in my opinion, one of the absolute best national parks in the country. Here’s a few ways to make certain you agree after your next visit:

Visit the park between January and March

The second time I visited Death Valley was in early September back in 2013. The reported temperate at Stovepipe Wells was right around 118 degrees fahrenheit (47.8c). We knew it was going to be hot in the park, but we didn’t know it would be that hot. We were after some Milky Way images and figured we’d give it a go. Since it was still daylight, we decided to hike out into the Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes where the temperatures were around 10 degrees higher (128f or 53c) because of all the reflective sand.

I had a Camelback on to stay hydrated but if I didn’t continuously drink out of it, the water that gets stuck in the tube would get piping hot. Suffice it to say, the last thing you want to do when you’re experiencing the highest temperatures you’ve could ever imagine is to drink it a mouth full of piping hot water. It was, in a word, miserable.

As sunset approached, we decided to head to Badwater Basin. There, temperatures had cooled down to a much more manageable 113f (45c). The crazy thing is, the temperature didn’t drop as the sun set and darkness approached. It was pitch black outside and my tripod was too hot to touch and my Canon 1Ds Mark III was flashing warnings at me saying it was overheating. Yes, Canon’s flagship (at the time) pro level camera made to endure the harshest elements couldn’t handle the heat.

You may be thinking at this time that Bill Fink was pretty spot on, and if that had been my only visit to the park, I might be inclined to agree. If you want to enjoy everything Death Valley has to offer, you shouldn’t go when the temperatures are unbearable. The average high/low temps in fahrenheit in January for Death Valley are 67/40 (19.4/4.4C), February is 73/46 (22.8/8C)and March is 82/55 (28/13C). Anything past that and you’re looking at possible highs in the 90s and 100s. All three workshops I’ve done in the park have occurred during these months and they all had absolutely beautiful weather.

Rent a Jeep from Farabee’s

Much of what Death Valley has to offer isn’t accessible with the Ford Fiesta you rented in Vegas. Places like Racetrack Playa, Eureka Sand Dunes and Titus Canyon simply can’t (and shouldn’t) be reached without a good 4×4 vehicle. I’ve been to Racetrack Playa three times now. Once in a VW Toureg, once in a Chevy Tahoe and once in a Jeep from Farabee’s. The Toureg is a great SUV but it wasn’t 4-wheel drive. We got to the playa without any problems, but on the way out we busted something in the transmission and had to limp back to Vegas for three days while we waiting to get the car repaired. The second trip, with the Tahoe, resulted in a flat tire on the way in at Teakettle Junction. I think it goes without saying that the rest of the drive in, as well as the drive out was pretty nerve racking, considering our only spare tire had already been used.

The third trip (and my most recent), I finally decided to rent Jeeps for our workshop group from Farabee’s Jeep Rentals in Furnace Creek. We had to rent three because we had nine students and two instructors so we got two 4-door Jeeps and one 2-door. Getting out to Racetrack Playa in the Jeeps was like a dream. Sure, the road was still rough and unforgiving, but the Jeeps handled it without a problem. They also include coolers in the back full of ice cold water and a radio beacon in case you run into trouble, which will send them to your location immediately.

Parking lots are for tourists – don’t be a tourist

Two of the most incredible places in Death Valley are the Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes and Badwater Basin. Both have large parking lots that can be totally full at any given time and both locations can be pristine or totally useless depending on the recent weather conditions in the park. When the winds calm down for days or weeks on end, the sand dunes get covered in foot prints quickly and become totally un-photogenic. The salt plates at Badwater Basin are always changing and depend on rain to get back to their pristine condition with white salt and low, thin borders. As the plates dry and time goes on, the salt turns brown and the edges rise until they become totally unrecognizable.

The best thing to do at the Mesquite Sand Dunes is to park about a half mile before or after the parking lot on the side of Highway 190. Then, just hike out to the dunes from there. You’ll be free of nearly 90% of all foot traffic and will have mostly untouched dunes at your disposal. Just be smart and do your very best to tread lightly. Only walk were you have to and try not to trample the most beautiful dunes.

If the salt patterns at Badwater Basin look terrible from lack of rain, head over to West Side Road. You’ll actually drive right past this road on the way to the Badwater Parking lot, but most people just keep driving because it just looks like a dirt road. Drive about half mile or so down this road and you’ll have a great chance at finding some incredible patterns here. Just keep in mind that Badwater Basin is always changing and this information could be totally reversed during your visit.

Scout during the day – shoot at the edges

Blue skies are the norm in Death Valley. So don’t be surprised if you don’t see much in the way of clouds on your trip. I’ve actually lucked out quite a bit during my visits to the park and have experienced some incredible conditions. All that aside, don’t go photographing this place in broad daylight thinking that you’re going to come out with a bunch of keepers. This is the same with any landscape photography, all over the world. If you want to experience this park in all its glory, you need to capture it at sunrise, sunset or at night.

Conclusion

Death Valley is one of the most magnificent, diverse and photogenic national parks in America (USA). You just have to know how to do it right. You can either listen to some editor on Yahoo who just threw a list together (probably) without even going to the places in the article. Or you can listen to the throngs of photographers who visit the park each and every year, including ones like me who keep coming back again and again.

The Worst Mistake a Travel Photographer Can Make

As a travel photographer and photography teacher, I meet a lot of photographers on a daily basis. Whether they’re amateur or pro, newbie or experienced, first-timers or old-timers, they often have one thing in common: too much gear.

The pro shooters who join me on my photography tours in Southeast Asia tend to look more like pack mules than people: they’re loaded with lenses, lights, filters, and a veritable menagerie of photographic accoutrement – you know, the kind of gear that makes you look like you know what you’re doing.

The problem? None of them ever use any of the gear they’ve broken their backs to bring!

Ok, fine, there might have been one guy, one time, who made it a point to use every single lens he’d brought with him. But normally I see people sticking to one or two lenses per shooting session, never giving the extra gear a second thought. This is actually a really good thing, and all the more reason to ditch the extra baggage, and rely on one or two lenses alone.

Why am I so anti-gear?

1. Gear is heavy!

How are you going to move your feet, get down low, and capture your subject during the millisecond when the light is just right?

The first thing I teach beginning photographers is to get moving – move quickly, get close to your subject, and don’t be a lazy photographer. When you’re weighed down with kilos (pounds) of heavy gear, you’re not free to respond as each moment arises.

2. Gear is expensive!

I don’t mean you shouldn’t buy it because it’s expensive; I mean you shouldn’t bring it because it’s expensive.

As a travel photographer, I’m often in remote parts of the world where getting your gear stolen or damaged is a very real possibility. You can’t focus on the photo you’re taking, if you’re constantly worrying about your stuff getting jacked.

3. Gear is distracting!

If you have one or two lenses with you at any given time, your choice in a shooting situation is simple – A or B. If you’re hauling around 12 different lenses, you’ll not only face a major crisis every time you want to take a photo; you’ll feel the need to constantly switch lenses precisely because you brought so many lenses in the first place.

You’re also much more likely to use the wrong lens, in the wrong situation, just because it’s there. Bring less gear and eliminate the chance of making silly mistakes by 300%.

4. Gear makes you lazy!

I think of gear like a crutch. Instead of improving your skills, you become a slave to the latest and greatest gadget, thinking it will improve your craft. The thing about gear is that it takes years, even decades, to learn how to use a single piece of equipment masterfully. After 20 years of shooting with a certain lens, your brain begins to think in terms of its focal length. You effectively merge with the lens, become it.

That’s basically a hippy-dippy way of saying you should be a gear monogamist. Sure, you might play the field every once in a while, experimenting with a 35mm or 100mm lens, but you should remain faithful to your main squeeze in order to truly master her.

My main squeeze for the past three years has been a 50mm lens. Once in awhile I also use my 35mm and 100mm lenses, and it’s this trio that I plan to focus on for at least another decade in order to fully master their potential.

Knowing your equipment allows you more anticipation for better results in your composition.

A true travel photographer, or any photographer for that matter, is one who can capture a moment and communicate with his or her audience without the burden of a crap ton of gear. You’re much better off choosing one or two lenses and mastering them than you are having 17 lenses you can only sort of use.

Peking Yuck: The 9 Worst Statues In China

These 9 Chinese statues are so awful, many were demolished within days of their unveiling after enduring scorn and ridicule by the People’s Republic’s people.

In April of 2013, citizens of Luoyang in east-central China’s Henan province were excited about the soon-to-open Hualong Amusement Park with an enormous gold-toned Buddha statue at its heart. Imagine the shocked silence when the covers came off the statue, revealing what incredulous netizens quickly dubbed the “Big Maitreya with the Swept-back Hairstyle.” When pressed, park managers admitted the statue’s head was modeled after a local entrepreneur who believed his grinning golden visage would help “inspire young people.” Inspire them to commit arson, one would guess.

After a few days of scathing and unrelenting criticism from local web commentators, park visitors arrived to find the statue headless – odd, yes, but still an improvement. As for the missing head, it turned up shortly thereafter mounted on a small, nondescript building some likened to a public restroom, presumably so young people would be inspired to answer nature’s call in a more entrepreneurial manner.

Want to know where the money you spend at Walmart is going? Try Inner Mongolia, where white elephants and green dinosaurs (in this case, one and the same) are free to roam. Unlike other constructed-but-unoccupied cities in the area, Erenhot boasts a population of about 75,000 and a thriving wind farm but city managers felt something was missing. Solution: build a Dinosaur Town & Tea Road Park, plunk a flock of life-sized dinosaur statues around the wind farm to make it look more natural, and have two of the biggest beasts kiss as they arch their necks over a highway… because dinosaurs DID kiss, of course. Wiiiilmaaa!

So Long Soong Ching-ling, we hardly knew you or at least, knew your statue! Soong Ching-ling was the second wife of Sun Yat-sen, founding father of the Republic of China, and is held in high regard by all Chinese to this day. Therefore it was no surprise the Henan province Soong Ching-ling Foundation was able to scrape up 120 million yuan ($ 19.5 million) to construct a 24 meter (78.5 ft) tall statue honoring her in Henan’s capital city of Zhengzhou. What WAS surprising was that the statue was demolished before it was even half-finished. Sun, I am disappoint.

Curiously, it seems that managers at the Henan Provincial Soong Ching Ling Foundation took issue with the appearance of the statue, which was supposed to have been based on a design by Professor Liang Mingcheng of the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts. “Though the statue and our design look alike, it is terrible in both effect and quality,” stated (or rather, spun) Professor Liang, who evidently isn’t one to mince words. End result: mince the statue.

What Are Your Worst Habits As A Photographer?

I was inspired to write this article after recently asking the question, “What are your worst habits as a photographer?” on social media.  Here are some of the most common responses followed by some suggestions.  Please share your own ‘bad habits,’ better yet, how you managed to correct them.  Everyone will benefit!

Not taking your camera everywhere with you

The best camera is the one you have with you. I may not always have my dslr with me, but I do have my iPhone. The quality is not the same, of course, but when I’m not shooting for a client it doesn’t really matter. Not everything you shoot has to be photo competition material. So, go ahead – use your phone when you have nothing else handy. Those ‘visual push-ups’ count just the same. Just a tip if you shoot with a dslr: Put a small lens on it such as a 50mm or the Canon 40mm pancake lens to make it more compact and light. Then there is no reason not to take it with you everywhere!

Sleeping late and missing that good early light

This is a very common problem especially for those of us shooting in a cold climate. Try motivating yourself with commitments such as meeting other photographers early in the day. If you schedule it and others are counting on you to be there, you are more likely to get up for it!

Getting lazy with WB settings

Hey, at least you know that there is a white balance setting!  I’m amazed at how many photographers do not know the importance of white balance or how to use it. I adjust my WB settings throughout the day, but you can also adjust it in post processing. Two things to keep in mind:  It’s easier to adjust if you are shooting RAW, but you can also adjust the color temperature on JPEGs. And if you keep your setting in auto white balance (AWB), you will not be able to do batch adjustments.  The setting will automatically change depending on the ambient light. Auto white balance works well, but it is generally a bit cooler than the actually color temperature. If you think your pictures are a bit blue in the shade, the white balance is off.  Hope this helps!

Letting dust get on the sensor

Changing lenses out in the field requires some care to prevent dust getting on the sensor. I cringe when I see photographers take off the lens, then slowly unpack the replacing lens while leaving the camera body open, face up, to let as much dust get in as possible. I do it this way: I place the replacement lens on a flat surface with the back cap already unscrewed and ready to come off. Then I set the camera next to it, lens down and, with my back against the wind, I quickly switch lenses in about 2 seconds. Another way to prevent dust from entering inside your camera is to blow the back element of your lenses with a Giotto rocket blower before attaching it to the camera body. If you take these simple precautions, you won’t need to clean the sensor as often.

Settling for the good shot and not looking for more

You got the shot you came for? Great! Now look behind you. Another good shot? If you were shooting a sunset, the light on the landscape behind you is may be an even better shot, so go for that, too.  Work the scene. Try other angles. Get your camera off the tripod and lay on the ground with it. Many photographers tend to shoot everything at eye level which quickly becomes boring and static. For more dynamic images experiment with different angles and perspectives – tilt your camera, shoot tall, shoot wide, get on the ground, etc.

 Composing poorly or too quickly

It pays to take time and care composing a shot just as it pays to shoot from multiple angles. Learn to compose in camera and stop relying on post processing for cropping. This option will make you a better photographer.  Train yourself to see distracting elements in your frame.  Move a few meters closer or zoom in a bit tighter. Scan the edges of your frame. Remember that the best time to shoot a vertical shot is right after you shoot a horizontal shot. Hey, it’s digital, so it’s free!  So, cover your basics because you never know which shot you will prefer once you get into the digital darkroom.

Chimping

Chimping is a common photography term to describe the action of reviewing pictures on the LCD. Okay, but how many shots do you miss because you are busy chimping? The LCD on the back of your camera is a great tool in achieving the best settings, but chimping is detrimental in some situations, such as street photography for example. Street activity changes quickly and in a split second you might miss capturing that great gesture or expression, or not getting the shot at all. If you shot film in the past, then you are less likely to chimp. But if you’re spending too much time now looking at your LCD, turn it off!  Added benefit – you may gain some confidence.

Self Doubt and waiting for others to say it’s a good photo

We all have self doubt! That’s just part of being a photographer. It comes with practicing the craft.  However, you can make self doubt serve you by turning it into a positive motivation and a learning process.

If you are shooting for clients, naturally their preferences are your priority. Otherwise, please yourself first!  Feeling good about your own images is what really counts. Sure, there is always room for improvement, and constructive critiques are beneficial. Just make sure you get feedback from the right people.

Experiencing sensory overload when traveling to a new place

I’ve written quite a bit about this.  It’s something we’ve all experienced when visiting an exciting new place. It’s nice to stay open to everything that is happening around you when you are in a new environment  but that approach doesn’t work for everyone.  When you try to capture it all, you may end up with lots of mediocre shots of random things and clichés. Instead, give yourself an assignment.  This will help you focus and ‘see.’  Next time you’re feeling sensory overload, think outside the postcard, focus on your goal and create your own iconic images. And have fun!
