Colorado Tripod Company introduces ‘world’s first titanium tripod system’

The Colorado Tripod Company has introduced what it claims is the world’s first titanium tripod system, with a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter. Not only does the use of titanium make the ball heads lightweight and strong, but the design of the heads also allows the camera to drop to the side below the usual 90 degrees seen in other heads.

The Highline ballhead will be available in either titanium or aluminum. The titanium model will feature a hollow ball to reduce weight. Both versions will have a locking force of 54lb and will offer left-handed controls that allow users to hold the camera and shoot with the right hand. The titanium model will weigh less than 340g (12oz), while in aluminium the same unit weighs 510g (18oz).

To accompany these heads a new line of titanium and carbon fibre legs have also been introduced. The company says that by CNC machining from a solid block of titanium it can make its metal parts stronger than manufacturers that use metal casting. Milling also means the company can make its parts more precisely, and it says it can cut the amount of material used to help reduce weight. The carbon fibre used in the Centennial legs is ten-layered, and comes from Japan.

An additional ball head called the Aspen comes only in aluminium but offers a much wider range of camera positions, as it has no housing around the ball. This allows the camera to drop well below 90 degrees, while making the head quite lightweight at only 454g (16oz).

The Highline ball head in aluminium starts at $ 79 on Kickstarter, while the titanium version can be had for $ 399. The Aspen head costs $ 179 and the Centennial tripod is $ 249 in aluminium and $ 399 in titanium. Various kits combing these products are also available. Shipping is planned to start in March.

World’s largest wet collodion plate created in abandoned house converted into a camera

While the rest of the world has been concentrating on making cameras smaller and lighter photographer Ian Ruhter was making one literally the size of a house in order to make the world’s largest wet collodion plate. Ian and his team sealed up an abandoned house in California and mounted a lens in the wall to create a massive camera. The camera was used to produce a portrait of a 100-year-old local resident on a sheet of glass measuring 66×90 inches.

The scale of the camera is one thing, and the size of the finished image is another, but what is most remarkable is that the team used a process that requires the glass plate to be coated with a solution of collodion poured from a jug right before the picture was taken.

The house selected was an abandoned ruin in an area called Bombay Beach, and the living room was used to form the camera. A giant hole for the lens was cut into the side of the house projected the image of the outside world into the room, and onto the massive sheet of glass for a ten second exposure.

The team made a fascinating documentary about the process that shows the project from start to finish and the thinking behind it. More of the team’s old-process adventures can be seen on the Silver and Light Vimeo channel.

“While working with wet plate collodion Ruhter came up with an idea to show the world the beauty of these objects in a size that was deemed impossible. This led him and the Silver & Light Team to a forgotten town on the edge of the Salton Sea called Bombay Beach, located in California’s Imperial Valley. The idea was to create a camera out of an abandoned house. The structure would serve as the framework for the camera. Instead of focusing on the decay from the outside, this house camera allowed a view from the inside into someone’s dream.

Once the giant lens was placed on the front of the house, images of Ted, a 100 year old resident who recently found himself homeless, were projected in, breathing new life into this abandoned structure and once again making it a home. During this brief moment in time when Ted’s photograph was captured, he was present in both places. In reality, he was homeless in the outside world. However, the projected image simultaneously allowed him to be sitting in the living room where he was once again home. because the surface of the plate is highly reflective the life sized plate serves as a mirror, allowing one to reflect upon where they will be in the twilight of their life.

Ten seconds of this dream were recorded on a 200 pound sheet of glass coated with collodion. The result was a 66”x 90” Ambrotype, which is recognized as the world’s largest wet plate collodion image.”

DJI announces the Osmo Pocket, ‘the world’s smallest 3-axis gimbal’ that shoots 4K60p video

DJI has announced the DJI Osmo Pocket, the world’s smallest three-axis stabilized camera system.

The Osmo Pocket features a 1/2.3″ sensor that captures 12-megapixel photographs and 4K60p video at 100Mbps. It also captures slow-motion footage at 120 fps when shooting 1080p. Audio is recorded with two buiilt-in microphones (one on the bottom of the camera and one on the rear of the camera) that feature noise-cancelling technology for reducing unwanted background noise.

To compose shots, review media, navigate the menu, and select the various shooting modes DJI included a 1″ integrated touchscreen onboard the Osmo Pocket. The integrated shooting modes include ActiveTrack, which tracks a subject within the frame; FaceTrack, a more advanced version of ActiveTrack that will follow a particularly persons face when visible; Timelapse & Motionlapse, modes that speed up time and integrate motion into timelapse videos; FPV Mode, a locked shooting mode that follows the movement of the users hand while keeping the footage steady; and Panorama modes, which enables the capture of multiple images for stitching together in post-production.

For times when the onboard screen isn’t enough — and to unlock a slew of other features — users can also attach a mobile device using the onboard USB Type-C port. Using the included adapters, Android and iOS mobile devices can be connected to the DJI Osmo and operated with the dedicated DJI Mimo app. In addition to live-view and image review, DJI Mimo also adds Story Mode and Pro mode.

Story Mode simplifies the entire video creation process by offering ten templates that automatically control the camera movement and include music, transitions and color grading presets in post-production. After shooting is finished, the DJI Mimo app constructs an entire video that’s ready to share.

Pro Mode, which is available on numerous other DJI products, gives complete control of almost every camera setting imaginable. As its name suggest, it’s oriented more towards professionals, but when auto modes just aren’t enough, Pro Mode is there to fill in the gaps.

The DJI Osmo Pocket battery life is rated for two hours when shooting 4K30p video. The battery is built-in, so there’s no swapping out batteries on the fly, but it’s possible to charge on-the-go with an external battery pack.

DJI has also announced a range of nine accessories for the Osmo Pocket to expand creative possibilities, including an accessory mount, wireless module, controller wheel, expansion kit, ND filter set, waterproof case, extension rod, charging case, and a 3.5mm adapter.

The DJI Osmo Pocket retails for $ 349 and is available for pre-order at DJI.com and through other DJI Authorized Retailers, including B&H.

Lexar announces ‘the world’s largest’ A2 microSD card

Longsys has announced the world’s largest A2 microSD card under the Lexar brand name.

The impending 512GB Lexar High-Performance 633x microSDXC UHS-I card meets the Application Performance Class 2 (A2) requirements, meaning it has a minimum write speed of 2000 input/output operations per second (IOPS) and a minimum read speed of 4000 IOPS. In the case of this particular Class 10 card with a V30 rating, that means it can read up to 100MB per second and write up to 70MB per second.

This particular card is designed more for smartphones and tablets, but can also be used in various action cameras and drones that use microSD cards for storage. Based on the speed, this particular card should handle 4K/30 video and 1080p/120 video without any hassle.

Lexar says the card has been tested in the “Lexar Quality Labs with more than 1,100 digital devices, to ensure performance, quality, compatibility, and reliability.” It claims an operating temperature range of 0°C/32°F to 70°C/158°F, storage temperature range of -25°C/-13°F to 85°C/185°F, and a humidity range of 5-95 percent.

Lexar said the card is expected to hit shelves by the end of October for an MSRP of $ 299.99, and has the card up on its website, but the 512GB version isn’t yet available from any retailers.

Epson FastFoto FF-680W, world’s fastest personal photo scanner, now available

Epson has launched its new FastFoto FF-680W High-Speed Photo and Document Scanning System, a model it claims is the fastest personal photo scanner currently available. At max speed, the FastFoto FF-680W can scan a photo every second at 300dpi (up to 36 photos per batch).

The FF-680W, which builds upon the existing FF-640 model, supports a variety of media types, including Polaroids, postcards, and panoramic photos, as well as scanning in 300dpi (“easy sharing”), 600dpi TIFF (“archiving”), and 1200dpi (“enlarging”) modes. More than one mode can be used per photo batch. The scanner also supports document scanning with OCR.

Both USB and wireless connectivity is supported. Users can directly share scanned images to Google Drive and Dropbox, capture handwritten notes on the back of an image during a single scan, and perform modest photo restoration and edits using Epson’s ScanSmart software.

The Epson FastFoto FF-680W scanner is available through the company’s website and at select retailers, including Amazon, for $ 599.99 USD.

3 Legged Thing launches ‘one of world’s tallest monopods’

Tripod manufacturer 3 Legged Thing has launched what it is describing as one of the world’s tallest monopods, alongside a heavy duty model and a new monopod foot stabilizer. Trent, a ‘punks’ monopod, will have a maximum extended height of 2m/80in, which is indeed extremely tall for a monopod.

Trent will be made from ‘aircraft-grade magnesium alloy’ and will be able to support kit weighting up to 30 kg / 66 lb, while a further monopod, Alan, will be made in carbon fibre and alloys and will carry up to 60kg/132lbs. Five-section Alan will extend to 1.49m/58.7in but packs down to just 1.49m/58.7in for storage – and fitting into cabin baggage with many airlines. Alan will weigh 0.6 kg / 1.34 lbs and four-section Trent will weigh 0.63 kg / 1.4 lbs.

Both models will feature 1/4”-20 and 3/8”-16 threads at both ends allowing them to be used as microphone booms as well as to support cameras.

The company is also introducing a new three-legged foot plate called Docz that is designed to add stability. Docz has an adjustable ball-and-socket fitting that can be used to alter the pressure required to move the monopod in the mount – to assist smooth panning and angling. The legs spread to 30cm/12in and fold upwards for storage.

Phase One iXM 100MP aerial camera uses world’s first BSI medium format sensor

The Industrial arm of Danish camera manufacturer Phase One has launched an aerial camera that uses the world’s first backlit medium format sensor. It’s called the iXM 100MP, and it’s almost certainly the first camera to use this sensor from Sony that we told you about back in November.

The iXM 100MP is part of a new iXM system of cameras and lenses designed to be used attached to drones or manned aircraft. A 50-megapixel version, the iXM 50MP, has also been launched, but the iXM 100MP uses backside illumination to boost the light sensitivity of the sensor and to improve its dynamic range.

The two cameras use 4:3 ratio sensors measuring 33x44mm, and both offer XQD storage as well as HDMI-out to allow realtime preview. USB-C and 10G Ethernet ports provide the means to connect directly to on-board storage and control in larger craft, to synchronize an array of cameras for 3D capture, and to speed up mapping work.

The system incorporates four new lenses designed specifically to work with these sensors. The RSM range use leaf-shutters with a shortest opening of 1/2500sec, and which can work at a rate of three frames per second. The shutters are guaranteed for 500,000 actuations, and the lenses have been designed to operate at a wide range of temperatures and altitudes without loss of quality.

Two of the news lenses—a 35mm and an 80mm—have fixed focus, while a further 80mm and a 150mm use motorized focus with focusing determined either before the flight or in the air using a remote control. The focusing versions are aimed at those carrying out structural inspections at different distances rather than those mapping from a constant height.

Here’s a quick first look at the iXM Camera Series:

The iXM cameras and their RSM lenses are expected to ship in June 2018, with lenses costing $ 10,000/€8000 and the cameras priced at $ 40,000/€32,000 (iXM 100MP) and $ 21,000/€17,000 (iXM 50MP). While the price of these models might put them beyond the range of most photographers, it is worth getting excited about the prospect of a 100MP BSI sensor entering the regular still photography market sometime soon. Meyer-Optik Goerlitz unveils ‘world’s fastest’ 75mm F0.95 Nocturnus lens

German lens manufacturer Meyer-Optik Goerlitz is expanding its range of F0.95 aperture lenses with the release of the Nocturnus 75mm. The lens will have the world’s widest aperture for the focal length, according to the company, and will offer sharp detail even when used wide open.

Like the Nocturnus 50mm F0.95 lll, this full-frame lens will be available in mounts for Leica M, Sony E and Fujifilm’s X series cameras, and will feature a 15-bladed iris that Meyer says will help to create bokeh ideal for portrait work. The aperture will be click-less to allow silent operation for filmmakers, and will close steplessly to F16.

The hand-made lens uses only five elements in five groups, and will have a closest focusing distance of 0.9m/35.4in. It will take a 72mm filter, will weigh about 750g/26.4oz and can be ordered in a black or a silver finish.

Already in the 1920s, Meyer brought lenses to market which were the fastest lenses of their time: the Kinoplasmat 75/f1. 5. Philips’ new 43-inch 4K HDR monitor earns world’s first DisplayHDR 1000 certification

Philips has unveiled the new Momentum 436M6VBPAB 43-inch 4K HDR Quantum Dot Monitor. This model is a milestone for the display market, according to Philips, because it is the first to receive the VESA DisplayHDR 1000 Certification.

As DPReview explained earlier this year, not all “HDR” monitors are created equal. In fact, until recently, there was no standard that helped define what was and what was not HDR. That’s why VESA created DisplayHDR: the first open standard for HDR displays.

The DisplayHDR standard is split into three tiers: the baseline DisplayHDR 400, the mid-range DisplayHDR 600, and the ultra-high-end DisplayHDR 1000. A total of eight tests are used to determine which of the three certifications a monitor deserves, including a trio of peak luminance tests, BT.709 and DCI-P3 color testing; a couple contrast measurement tests; an HDR response performance test; and, finally, a bi-depth requirement test.

By establishing a standard (assuming manufacturers adopt it) the display industry has simplified the shopping process. Rather than examining each display’s spec sheet, buyers can look for the DisplayHDR 400/600/1000 badge and rapidly determine whether the display truly meets HDR standards.

The DisplayHDR 1000 certification that Philips just achieved guarantees a minimum 10-bit encoding, 1,000 nits peak brightness, 0.5 nits cap on black levels, minimum of 90% DCI-P3 coverage, and 99% sRGB. Both the DisplayHDR 600 and DisplayHDR 1000 tiers are suitable for professional work, but 1000 is obviously the better option.

VESA certification aside, the Momentum 436M6 monitor offers Ambiglow technology that adds “a new dimension to the entertainment viewing experience,” according to Philips. With Ambiglow, Momentum 436M6 monitors present a glow around the display that matches the colors and brightness on the screen. This “enlarges the screen,” says Philips, though it’s more of a unique ambiance for watching movies and playing games than something practical for work. Fortunately for those of us who might find this feature distracting, users have full control over Ambiglow.

Finally, Philips’ new monitor features MultiView for working with multiple devices simultaneously. One example provided is using one side of the display for something interactive, such as using a PC, and the other side of the display for streaming content from a set-top box.

Philips plans to launch the Momentum 436M6 some time this summer for $ 1,000.00 USD.

This Lamborghini is ‘the world’s fastest purpose-built camera car’

If you like fast cars and expensive camera gear, look no further. What you see above is a Lamborghini Huracan with a $ 500,000 dollar camera gimbal attached to the front—a machine its creators have dubbed “the world’s fastest purpose-built camera car.”

Created by Incline Dynamic Outlet (IDO), a California-based company that usually specializes in aerial camera rigs, the so-called Huracam was built over the course of ‘many months.’

The frame for this elaborate setup is a $ 200,000 Lamborghini Huracan. Attached to the inside of the hood of said Huracan is a half-a-million dollar camera gimbal setup created by Gyro-Stabilized Systems (GSS) and fabricated to fit the vehicle by IDO. Inside the gimbal is a RED Helium 8K camera with the option to mount multiple lenses—a fittingly expensive camera for an unbelievably expensive camera car.

If you’re wondering how IDO was able to mount the gimbal inside the hood of the Lamborghini, it’s because the Huracan is a mid-engine vehicle. This means the massive 610-horsepower V10 engine sits towards the rear of the car, centered behind the driver and passenger seats, effectively turning the hood of the car into a trunk.

Unmodified, the Lamborghini Huracan has a zero-to-60 speed of 3.2 seconds and a top speed of more than 200 miles per hour. We don’t have the specs on how well it performs with the massive camera attached to the front, but it’s safe to say there’s a slight sacrifice in speed and acceleration.

There’s no video captured with the 8K setup yet, but the first snippets shouldn’t be too far away. The team has already partnered up with Sharp Electronics for the first project with the Huracam.
