The Animaionic docking station transforms Mac Mini into a workstation for professionals

28 Dec

A new Kickstarter campaign is seeking funds for Animaionic, a Mac Mini docking station that supports external GPUs and SSDs. The team behind the campaign says that Animaionic was created specifically for the creative community, offering it the graphics capabilities and storage it needs at a price ultimately lower than that of the Mac Pro.

Apple’s Mac Mini, a small square-shaped desktop computer, starts at an affordable $ 799, but doesn’t offer the level of performance needed by professional filmmakers and photographers. The Mac Pro desktop is a more powerful alternative, but with a starting price of $ 5,999, the model is too expensive for some creators.

The Animaionic docking station aims to solve this problem by transforming the Mac Mini into a proper workstation. The model supports two PCIe graphics cards and up to four SSDs, according to the Kickstarter campaign, for up to 8TB of additional data storage capacity. The docking station also features an SD card reader, two USB 3.1 ports, Thunderbolt 3, HDMI, Ethernet and an audio mini jack.

When used with a pair of AMD Radeon Vega 56 graphic cards, the Animaionic team claims the Mac Mini with docking station offers considerably higher performance in a number of popular applications, including 4.5x greater performance in Final Cut Pro X, 10x in Apple Motion and 25x in Luxmark.

The Kickstarter campaign is offering Animaionic to backers who pledge at least £699; shipping is estimated to start in May 2020.

HP reveals the ZBook x2: The ‘world’s most powerful detachable PC workstation’

18 Oct

$ (document).ready(function() { SampleGalleryV2({“containerId”:”embeddedSampleGallery_9365668628″,”galleryId”:”9365668628″,”isEmbeddedWidget”:true,”standalone”:false,”selectedImageIndex”:0,”startInCommentsView”:false,”isMobile”:false}) });

Step aside Microsoft, because HP just released a monstrous ‘detachable PC workstation’ that can compete with powerful laptops like the Surface Book 2 released yesterday… but in a form factor that looks more like a Surface Pro. Meet the HP ZBook x2: the so-called “world’s most powerful and first detachable PC workstation.”

In HP’s own words, this computer “was designed to solve the performance and mobility needs of artists, designers and digital imaging professionals who need to push Adobe Creative Cloud and other professional applications to the limit.” So what makes this computer more capable than HPs other two-in one solutions: the HP Spectre x2 and HP Elite x2. In a word: performance.

While previous two-in-one iterations with these kinds of specs put most of the components—the main CPU, GPU, etc—into the base unit, the HP ZBook x2 flips the script. The bluetooth keyboard is basically just that: a bluetooth keyboard; even when the tablet is detached completely it maintains the full performance from its CPU and GPUs. Think of it like a Surface Pro dressed up to star in the next Iron Man movie.

Spec-wise, the HP ZBook x2 can be configured with 8th Gen Intel Core i7 graphics, a discreet NVIDIA Quadro M620 graphics card with 2GB of dedicated GDDR5 memory, up to 2TB of local PCIe SSD storage, and up to 32GB of RAM. All of this sits behind a 14-inch 4K multi-touch screen with optional 10- bit, one-billion color HP DreamColor display that’s been calibrated 100 percent of Adobe RGB.

The computer can be used in four different modes:

  • Laptop Mode: attached to the bluetooth keyboard.

  • Detached Mode: Use the tablet with the new HP pen, while still having full access to your Bluetooth keyboard shortcuts off to the side.

  • Docked Mode: Using the ZBook Dock, the x2 can power two additional 4K displays or five total displays.

  • Tablet Mode: totally detached and disconnected from the keyboard, the x2 maintains full graphics performance.

In most modes, you’ll want to use the ZBook x2 with the new battery-free HP pen, which is based on Wacom EMR technology and offers 4,096 levels of pressure sensitivity with multi-directional tilt capabilities and a dedicated eraser. And when it’s docked and powering two 4K displays, the setup can look pretty … intense:

In short, the ZBook x2 is trying to be all things to professional creatives and designers. Instead of using some combination of laptop, iPad, and Wacom tablet, you can replace all of them (ostensibly) with one ZBook x2. And since it was designed in collaboration with Adobe, you can bet Photoshop, Lightroom, Illustrator, Premiere, and other powerful CC apps will work exceptionally well.

To learn more about the HP ZBook x2, head over to HP’s website. The new ‘detachable workstation’ will go on sale in December and starts at $ 1,750 for the base model with a dual core 7th generation Intel Core i7 CPU—no word yet on how much more expensive it’ll be to fully spec out one of these.

HP reveals insane Z8 workstation: Can handle 3TB of RAM and 48TB of storage

14 Sep

The rise of 4K (and 6K… and 8K) video, not to mention virtual reality and 360° content, means the computers of today need to grow up and they need to do it fast. 16GB of RAM, a decent video card, and 1TB of hard drive space just won’t cut it for many professionals any longer… but even those professionals who need boatloads of power will probably go wide-eyed when they hear the specs of HP’s new top-of-the-line desktop workstations.

HP revealed its new Z8, Z6, and Z4 workstations today, and the company is not joking when it says the new desktops are equipped with “extreme power.” In fact, the Z8 is being touted as “the most powerful desktop workstation on the planet.” Here’s why…

Inside this mammoth of a PC you will find dual Intel Xeon CPUs with up to 56 processing cores, which are running your real-time 8K video editing session off of up to 3 terabytes of RAM. That is not a typo. You also have access to 9 PCIe slots (7 full size, 2 ‘personality’ slots), dual 1GbE Ports, Thunderbolt 3 (optional), and USB 3.1 G2 Type C ports as well.

The fully spec-d out Z8 is probably out of reach for many creatives, which is why there’s also a Z6 and Z4. These workstations can’t handle quite as much in way of raw processing power, speed, and storage, but they’re still extremely capable machines.

The Z6 also sports dual CPUs, can handle up to 384 GB of system memory, and features dual M.2 slots for HP’s own Z Turbo Drive PCIe SSDs.

The Z4 is a bit weaker still, housing only a single Intel Xeon W CPU, 256GB of RAM, as well as dual 1GbE ports and dual M.2 slots.

The Z8 and Z6 will both be available in October, with the Z4 following shortly after in November. You can get the base model Z8 for just $ 2,440 but don’t expect that to be a fully upgraded version… for that you’ll likely need to shell out many thousands more. In contrast, the Z6 will run you $ 1,920 for the base model and the Z4 will cost $ 1,240.

To learn more, head over to HP’s website and have your bib ready… something drooling this way comes.
