Hovering Tiny Black House Haunts the Woods Under a Railway Bridge

black flying house 3

Looking like something out of a creepy fairytale, this little black house hovers in the air beneath the arch of an old railway bridge, a spindly ladder reaching down into the fallen leaves. If you weren’t expecting it to be there and happened upon it while on a walk, you might be a bit shocked to see it seemingly floating in space, its skylights glinting in the sun. From far away, you can’t see how it could possibly be supported, lending it a somewhat supernatural appearance.

The steel cables that support the structure become apparent as you walk up, and the ladder is usually hidden off to one side, requiring passersby to look around a bit for a way to get up.

But if you did happen to be brave enough to approach it and climb the ladder, not knowing what you’d find inside, you’d be greeted with a bare-bones but cozy hut from which to survey the surrounding woods, complete with a loft and a wood stove.

Set in an area that’s 15 minutes walking distance fro the city center of Pardubice, Czech Republic, the installation takes advantage of stark scenery left behind by disused infrastructure, aiming for the feel of a mysterious military complex.

Created by H3T Architekti and photographed by Maritna Kubesova and Tomas Rasl, ‘Flying Black House’ is a temporary installation daring passersby to give in to their curiosity, even if it makes them feel like the foolish protagonist in a horror movie.

Into the woods: Samsung NX500 Field Test

10 Nov

It’s not often we get to eat what we photograph, but that’s what we did in our latest Field Test. We took the Samsung NX500 into the woods with pro photographer and mycology enthusiast Eirik Johnson to forage for some wild mushrooms. While providing a keen eye to make sure we didn’t try to eat anything poisonous, Eirik also helped us try out the NX500’s imaging and 4K video features. Read more

Into the woods: a video overview of the Olympus OM-D E-M5 II

20 Feb

We thought we’d try something a bit different for our video overview of the Olympus OM-D E-M5 II. Given that two of the major changes are improvements in its video features and stabilization, we thought we’d use the camera to shoot its own video and see how it behaves handheld. And, since the camera is environmentally sealed, we thought we’d venture beyond the office for a bit. See video

Fast Track: A 557-Foot Trampoline in the Russian Woods

29 Nov

[ By Steph in Architecture & Public & Institutional. ]

Pedestrian roads would be a lot more fun if they were bouncy. Maybe that’s why Salto Architects decided to complete this unusual installation, a 557-foot-long (170 meter) trampoline walkway that runs through the woods of Russia. ‘Fast Track’ eschews the entirely practical nature of most roadways, choosing to infuse it with an element of fun that encourages users to pause and laugh for a while.

Bouncing along the trampoline gives pedestrians more time to take in and appreciate their surroundings as they walk, leading them to interact with it in a different way. The Estonian architecture studio sought to “create intelligent interactive spaces that emotionally correspond to its local context.”

The walkway was built for the Archstoyanie Festival in Russia, giving attendees a fun and interactive way to get from one end of the event space to the other.

The project is reminiscent of a recently unveiled concept by studio AZC for an inflatable bridge in Paris that is more recreational than practical. While this approach to infrastructure isn’t likely to spread on a large scale, for obvious economic and efficiency reasons, it’s a nice change of pace as a temporary installation.

Redwood Canopy, Muir Woods National Monument

26 Aug

It’s ironic and sad that only when we lose something does it become treasured. Muir Woods is a perfect example of this. These majestic Redwood trees were nearly wiped out to build and rebuild San Francisco (after numerous fires and the great earthquake of 1906). This last stand of local Redwood trees was saved by rough terrain that made logging difficult if not impossible and the donation of the land by William Kent.

Muir Woods National Monument is among the most popular destinations in the San Francisco area. Just the other weekend my wife and I drove through Marin to see large crowds gathering at a shuttle stop to visit Muir Woods. The small parking lot there is quickly filled by early arrivals and numerous tour buses. I think it’s great that people now see the value in the serene beauty of this oasis of Redwood trees, but I can’t help but feel sad that it took their near destruction for others to appreciate their existence.

God has cared for these trees, saved them from drought, disease, avalanches, and a thousand tempests and floods. But he cannot save them from fools. – John Muir
