Gannett launches Imagn image licensing and wire service sourced from the USA Today Network

27 Apr

Gannett, the media company behind USA Today and dozens of local news publications, has announced the launch of Imagn, its own image licensing and wire service. Imagn is a rebrand of Gannett’s USA Today Sports Images business unit, which has been expanded to provide news and media outlets with images related to entertainment, breaking news, and sports.

The images are sourced from the USA Today Network, which pulls the content from USA Today and the 109 local news brands owned by Gannett, according to a press release from the company. In addition to images from photojournalists working across the USA Today Network, Gannett says specialized images are provided through Imagn from its partner SIPA USA.

The platform kicks off with 600,000 images per year sourced from 300 sports photographers across the nation. That number will grow to 1.8 million images per year under this expansion, Gannett revealed, with the company claiming Imagn is now one of the biggest sources of original editorial images in the US.

Imagn offers both flat fee and subscription-based purchasing options; the subscription is split into three tiers based on image subject matter and offers unlimited images for editorial use. Given Gannett’s vast number of local newsrooms, the company may be uniquely positioned to offer a large library of images from smaller regions around the nation.

Ghost Ship: Wire Mesh Sails Make an Eerie Sight in Italy’s Bay of Sapri

24 Aug

[ By SA Rogers in Art & Sculpture & Craft. ]

A ghostly ship sails through the Bay of Sapri in Southern Italy, just translucent enough for onlookers to doubt whether they’re imagining it, its silhouette obscured by a jumble of rectilinear columns. The latest wire mesh masterwork by artist Edoardo Tresoldi, ‘Locus’ is a collaboration with Italian musician IOSONOUNCANE, bringing sculpture and music together in a public performance enjoyed by a crowd gathered on the nearby shore.

The musician debuted his unreleased composition during the installation, presented as part of Sapri’s Derive Festival, an experimental art, music and poetry project curated by Antonio Oriente. The combination of the ship’s visuals, the lighting, the music and the setting truly made it a one-of-a-kind experience, with the sounds amplified by the water.

“Sapri Bay become sone of the characterizing elements of the event, acquiring a temporal and performative dimension,” states the Derive website (translated from Italian. “Collaboration blends different contemporary languages, redefining the relationship between audience and artist in a kind of hic et nunc [here and now] unrepeatable.”

Edoardo Tresoldi is known for his eerily beautiful wire compositions, which are typically architectural in nature, recreating entire classical and historic structures like echoes of churches that fell into ruins centuries ago and palatial interior installations augmented by flying birds.

Ghostly Garden: Classical Wire Mesh Architecture Haunts Abu Dhabi

20 May

[ By SA Rogers in Art & Sculpture & Craft. ]

Seeming like a ghostly image of structures long gone overlaid onto the current reality, these wire mesh architectural creations arch over 75,000 square feet of event space in Abu Dhabi. The way the mesh shifts between transparency and opacity depending on how it’s layered, paired with its grid pattern, gives it the look of a light-based projection, yet it’s physical and three-dimensional, crafted in full-scale skeletal form to suggest structures rather than bring them to fruition.

Artist Edoardo Tresoldi previously resurrected an ancient church in Puglia, Italy that had been destroyed by earthquakes in the 13th century right where it once stood, allowing visitors to get a sense of how the structure interacts with the site before and after its demise. This time, Tresoldi sculpts a whole series of architectural sculptures, along with flying birds and cubes that hang suspended in midair.

The Abu Dhabi installation acts as a decorative tableau for a royal event attended by 1,900 guests from all over the Middle East, and took three months to complete, representing the artist’s first time creating a large installation for an indoor space. After the event, some of the structures will be moved and reassembled in public places across the UAE capital, including museums, parks and universities.

Many of these forms are reminiscent of previous Tresoldi works, including an archway used on a fashion runway, and a caged bird. Tresoldi creates figurative wire mesh sculptures, as well. You can see the evolution of his process at his Behance profile.

Down to the wire: iFixit Fujifilm X30 disassembly guide

iFixit Fujifilm X30 disassembly guide

Few of us will ever be so bold as to take a screwdriver and a spudger to a beloved camera. But how do we satisfy the urge to know what’s going on inside of it? For curious types with a weak constitution for taking things apart, there’s iFixit. The good people at iFixit publish product-specific disassembly guides, written to help common folk make simple repairs to their own electronic devices. They’re also an easy way to peek inside a modern digital camera without voiding your warranty. This week, we look inside the Fujifilm FinePix X30.

iFixit Fujifilm X30 disassembly guide

Like so many other things, it’s best to start this project at the bottom. After removing the battery, you’ll go about removing screws from the camera’s chassis, including these three on the bottom plate.

Once you’ve removed enough screws, the bottom and back panels can be pulled back. So what’s underneath? A whole mess of ribbon cables.

For starters you’ll have to detach these five ribbons that are connected to the motherboard.

After a little spudger action and disconnection of cables from the surrounding circuitry, the copper plate underneath it all is revealed. The copper plate is likely for heat dissipation.

Attached to the other side of the copper plate is the X30’s 12MP, 2/3″-type sensor. Lifting it out of the way reveals the lens.

With a few screws removed the motherboard can be tilted upward. To completely remove it you’ll need to desolder the black, grey and red wires seen here.

And now we come face-to-face with the lens assembly. Remove a few screws…

…and the lens is free for removal. It’s a 28-112mm equiv. F2-2.8 zoom, by the way.

Working with the flash capacitor requires some careful maneuvering. As the circuits store charge to power the flash unit, touching the leads at the bottom of the circuit could result in a nasty shock. More desoldering is required here to get this board free.

With the eyepiece removed and just a couple more screws taken out of the LCD panel, you’ll have successfully disassembled your Fujifilm Finepix X30. Congratulations, you’re a monster.

Drawing with Wire: Scribbled Sculptures Make Sketches 3D

wire sketches 1

Scribbled sketches seem to leap off the page and hover in mid-air, filling out in three dimensions, in this impressive series of sculptures made from bent wire. Artist David Oliveira captures the essence of his subjects, whether they’re people or mountain lions, by studying their anatomy and translating their sense of vitality and movement into minimalist life-sized forms.

Oliveira sees his works as existing on some other plane, like an abstracted echo of the physical bodies that exist in our reality. Twisting, looping and curving black wires, he sketches in air, and the resulting sculptures look as if they’ve been peeled off a piece of paper, enlarged and skewed like skeletons that were hidden inside each subject all along.

As viewers, we look at these gestural impressions of living creatures and our minds fill in the blanks, suggesting to us what the real-life subjects must have looked like, how they must have moved. The sculptures are particularly effective when they’re hung from the ceiling in transparent thread, seeming to float.

Electrifying Art: Sculptures Made of Wire and Cable Ties

10 Jun

[ By Steph in Art & Sculpture & Craft. ]

Cable Tie Sculptures 1

All it took to create this series of sculptures – aside from ingenuity and artistic talent, of course – was a trip to the hardware store for some electrical wire and cable ties. Artist Pavel Sinev coils black and white wires into works of art that range from the straightforward to the slightly surreal, like a vaguely disturbing baby with a bottle in its mouth.

The wiring is carefully wound into three-dimensional shape and held together with the zip ties, the designs ultimately reflecting the unconventional ways in which common household materials can be used with a little creativity.

Wire is a surprisingly versatile artistic medium. Check out a stunningly intricate motorcycle and sidecar by Chinese artist Shi Jindian, fluid human sculptures by Derek Kinzett, minimalist works by Gavin Worth and more.
