dPS Weekly Photo Challenge: My Street

Thanks to Marjorie over in our Facebook Group, this week we’re having a go at photographing our street “On the street where I live” So earlier, I grabbed my camera and headed to the top of my street and this was the first thing that caught my eye… (Someone that lives around here has done similar on many signs..)

Use the hashtag #dPSInMyStreet if you share your photograph on social media

What you choose to photograph in your street is entirely up to you, but it does have to be “on the street where you live” It can be a single image as mine is, or you can make it a triptych perhaps? (Simon, what’s a Triptych!?)

Remember: The aim of our weekly challenge is to get you to pick up your camera and make a new photograph, rather than dig through your archives for a photo you took in 1993 (unless you can’t, and then you can share a photo from 1993, but I’d really rather you went and took a new one)

Now we’re not necessarily looking for ‘Street Photography‘ though that can be what you shoot if you like, but just some element, or set of elements from your street.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Just Add Light

I have been thinking about light a lot recently, adding light to images by using lots of different sources, flash, led panels, torches, bedside lamps etc, but I have to level with you, while I love experimenting with light, I’m not a master of ‘all of the settings’ and I mess up often – and that’s ok, we learn.

We thought it might be a fun idea to do another “more than one image” challenge to see what adding light, however you like, can lift an image.

Share your photo on social media and tag them #dPSWeeklyChallenge and #dPSJustAddLight

So today when I went with my 11yo and my camerabag to an often empty walking path nearby to take a couple of photographs of him hitting his Jigsaw Jump, the goal being to light him and get a dramatic photo in the spot I’d chosen, shaded by trees, almost like a tunnel of darker trees… All was well until I realised I’d forgotten my glasses and couldn’t find all the settings I needed on these new flashes, anyway! Onward!

The idea is that you have a photograph you take, and then you take it again but add a lightsource of some kind to change the image for better or for worse, and when you share them, you share the images together. You can use any lightsource, I’ve used a flash in the photo below.

And in this photo of my grinder I used a torch and a small Aputure LED panel with a piece of red paper as my background.

Welcome to this week’s photography challenge! The aim is to get you to try photographing new things every week, to maybe try photographing things you’ve not tried before, or to get you thinking in a different way to maybe create a different image if you have photographed the theme before.

Rain! There’s a lot of it around right now (Depending on where you are obviously) so let’s see your take on this week’s photography challenge theme ‘Rain’ I chose to photograph the raindrops that had run down my window all afternoon, with a macro lens.

#dPSRAIN is the hashtag for this week’s challenge if you’re posting on social media (make sure you follow us!)

If you live somewhere that it’s not raining, and there’s no rain forecast, you can bend the rules and do ‘water’ in general. (Hey, a garden hose and some creativity and you’re making your own rain!) when photographing rain (or water) remember that it looks good with light shining through it, or maybe as a reflective pool, perhaps even glistening on some skin, the options aren’t endless, but with a little creativity, there are a lot of them!

You can opt to capture a detail (top and below) or a whole scene (above) for this theme, really whatever takes your fancy.

Your photography challenge this week is to take the widest lens you have (hey, if that’s a 50mm, so be it!) and make a photograph with it! Many things can work well with a wider lens, landscapes, cityscapes.. Really I guess you can photograph anything with a wide lens, some things just look better really wide.

Use the Hashtag #dPSGoWide and #dPSPhotoChallenge if you post to social media

A source of learning and inspiration, books are a part of all (ok, most?) of our lives, some of them even have pages! (yes, that was a side-eyed shot at people who only use e-readers haha) I personally love a great photography book, but I digress… This week your challenge is to make an interesting photograph with a book! I’ve share a few examples below (They’re from Unsplash, this week with home-school here in Melbourne, I’ve had little time to pick up the camera, sadly!)

You can set a scene with a book, use it’s pages to guide your viewer into your photograph, it can be all about the book, as though the book is for sale and you have to make the photo of it that makes people want to buy it – you can come at your photograph from any angle (in every sense) and I really look forward to seeing your different perspectives this week!

Make sure you tag your photographs with #dPSBooks and #dPSWeeklyChallenge if you share them on Instagram, Twitter or Facebook, so that we can spot them and share them.

Welcome back to another weekly challenge! We’re back into another week of lockdown here in Melbourne and it’s really not fun! We hope you are all doing OK out there.

We have a potentially more technical and challenging challenge for some, photographing steam can be tricky! You need to work on getting the steam (or smoke) and the light source (the sun, a flash, a torch, anything really) in the right place to highlight the steam for your camera.

We asked for your suggestions for our weekly photo challenge over on Twitter, and Todd replied with ‘Mirrors‘ which is always a fun challenge! Most people have access to one (My 11yo needs to use one more before going to school haha) and the creativity factor is high on this one – be in the frame, don’t be, it’s your choice!

Angling the mirror to show a different scene within a scene as above, how did I do it? Guesses welcome! Was it one frame or two?

Obviously I didn’t venture out of my bathroom for my series of images, and that’s fine – you can do the same! I had an idea for another photo, but I got ‘that look’ when I asked my wife if I could take her full length mirror to the park… bah! Anyway!

The dPS Weekly Photography Challenge – The Street

This is a pretty broad theme, I’m sure you’ll agree! “The Street” or #dPSTheStreet has but one goal and that is to get you, at some stage in this next week to take your camera with you when you leave the house and head down the street. Find a scene and make it interesting. This photo is of my friend Elly who owns a coffee shop around the corner from my house, we’re all back in lockdown here in Melbourne, but a cafe can operate and so I head around to support them and grab my morning coffee. Today I took my camera with me (A Sony a7RMk3 and a 35mm lens) with the goal of making a frame for this challenge. I was going to go with the front window cakes (We have to order through the door and stay outside) display, but when I brought the camera up to my eye and half-pressed my shutter to focus, the camera had other ideas! My focus point was set to single and was slightly off the middle and just caught Elly in the frame and the photo was made. I like the image, despite it being a little less sharp than I’d have liked, because of the various elements in the frame, kinda takes me on a bit of a journey.

Anyways! Find a street scene and make it interesting! Looking forward to seeing what this week’s images have in store.
