Casio launches intense-looking GZE-1 action cam that’s waterproof to 50 meters

13 Oct

Casio just announced an action camera that it claims is drop-, water- and freeze-proof, and comes with a 13mm f/2.8 equivalent lens. It’s called the GZE-1, and it’s the first of a new line of Gz EYE models that are aimed at extreme sports enthusiasts.

The camera is said to use G-Shock technology borrowed from the Casio’s sports watch brand, and can be controlled either by a Casio Pro Trek watch, a smart phone or the dedicated (and optional) remote controllers, one of which has a LCD screen that allows users to see the action live. The camera itself doesn’t have a viewing screen.

CD controller “GEC-10” PRO TREK Smart “WSD-F20”

Despite having a 21.14-million-pixel 1/2.3-type backlit CMOS sensor, the GZE-1 turns out only 6.9MP still images and FullHD video. It can, however, record frame rates of up to 240fps, and allows users to vary the frame rate during a clip to mix slow-motion with normal motion in the same sequence. This allows action moments to be shown in slow-motion without users having to record the whole sequence at a high frame rate, or having to combined multiple clips of different speeds in post-processing.

Three-axis electronic image stabilization helps to keep movie footage smooth (though it does nothing for stills) and over-sized buttons make the camera easy to control with gloves on. A resin body coating and a urethane bumper helps the camera withstand drops from 4 meters, high pressure blasts from waves, and water in general to depths of up to 50 meters. The body is also IP 6X dust-proof and can operate in temperatures as low as -10°C.

No price has been released yet but the Casio GZE-1 is due to go on sale at the end of the month in Japan… we’re still waiting to see if it becomes available elsewhere in the world.

For more information, see this translated version of the Casio GZE-1 product page.

Miggo launches Agua line of waterproof camera and drone bags

03 Aug

Miggo, the smartphone and photography accessory makers who brought us the Pictar iPhone camera grip among other innovative products, have returned to crowdfund the launch of a new Agua line of waterproof bags designed for DSLRs as well as the DJI Mavic and Spark drones.

There are three models in the series, which are all made from a matte-finish tarpaulin material and offer the IPX3 environmental protection standard.

The Agua Versa backpack is designed for carrying photographic gear but can easily be converted into a backpack for daily use by removing the “doc-bag” camera insert. The Versa can be carried as a backpack, sling bag or x-position style and comes with external charging system for mobile devices.

The main compartment comes with laptop and tablet pocket, and there are several smaller pockets as well. Three water-proof outer pockets can hold a large variety of smaller items, and the rigid bottom offers impact protection when setting the bag down. The bag can hold a Canon 5D-sized full-frame DSLR and two F2.8 lenses, including a 70-200 F2.8 and a flash.

The Versa’s strap system can be adjusted for sling-style use. Inside your gear is protected from the elements.

The Agua Drone Lander is made from the same waterproof material as the Versa, but it was made to function as a carrier for the DJI Mavic or Spark drones. The latter and accessories are are protected by a padded three-layer insert, and an integrated landing mat doubles as a work surface. The Drone Lander is carried in the sling position, and an additional diagonal strap offers better stability for long-distance carrying.

The third model in the line, the Agua Sling, combines a compact design with storage capacity for a 5D-sized DSLR and three lenses, including a 70-200 F2.8 and a flash gun. A padded strap allows for sling-style carrying and gear is accessed through a side-opening. Like the Versa, the Agua Sling comes with a water-proof front pocket for personal items and an external charging port for mobile devices. The main compartment offers a laptop pocket.

The Drone Lander comes with a landing mat. Padded inserts protect your drone and accessories.

We’ve had a chance to use the Agua Versa backpack for a couple of weeks, and our first impression is indeed very positive. The backpack is well-made, and the strap system is comfortable to wear and allows for a lot of adjustment.

There are plenty of external and internal pockets to help you organize all sorts of small things, such as batteries, memory cards and other accessories. My 14″ Acer just fits into the internal laptop sleeve and the camera insert holds a DSLR and a couple of lenses no problem. When the insert is removed, the bag also works well as a rugged day pack, with more than enough space for a change of clothes for when you bike to work.

You should be aware that access to your gear is only available from openings in the sides, but once you’re used to that, getting your stuff in and out of the bag is easy and quick. You can now pre-order the Agua bags on Indiegogo from $ 100 for each model with the early bird special, which sounds like an interesting deal if you are in need of a waterproof bag for your imaging gear.

The agua Drone Lander is equipped with a main padded strap for carrying in the “sling” position, and a diagonal strap to keep the bag tight against the body for easy long-distance carrying. Like all the bags in the agua series, the Drone Lander is IPX3-standard storm-proof.

The Agua Sling offers a compact design with surprising storage capability. It can carry a full-format DSLR camera such as Canon 5D Mark 4 (or similar), three professional lenses including 70-200 f2.8, and flash.

A wide, padded strap allows easy carrying and quick access to the gear through a side opening. Agua Sling is made from durable tarpaulin with a matt finish and offers a rigid bottom made with thermoforming technology for superior impact protection. It also features a water-proof front pocket for personal stuff, an external and convenient charging port for mobile phones and a dedicated laptop pocket. “In July 2017, we’ll be returning to Kickstarter for the fourth time, and we’re looking forward to hearty support and backing “, says Rafi David, miggo’s CEO. “Kickstarter is an amazing platform that enables young companies like us to bring innovative products to the market, to receive feedback from consumers at a stage where changes can still be made and thus offer the products that are most suitable for our users.”

Voyager is a waterproof, smart LED light stick that you control with a phone

23 Jul

A new Indiegogo campaign is seeking funding for Voyager, a waterproof smart light stick made with LEDs, a diffuser tube, integrated battery, remote controller, and animation controller.

Voyager is the brainchild of Digital Sputnik, which says it packed all the features from its other DS products into this light stick. The company plans to offer Voyager in both 2ft / 61cm and 4ft / 123cm lengths, each version with slightly different specs.

The 2ft Voyager has a weight of 2.4lbs / 1.1kg, a resolution of 39 pixels, built-in 45Wh battery and 20 watt power draw. Compared to that, the larger 4ft Voyager has a 4.9lbs / 2.2kg weight, 83 pixels resolution, 90Wh battery, and 40 watt power draw. Both models allow photographers to use their own diffusion filters via two installation slots, and both can be used under water at depths of up to 2m / 6.6ft for up to 30 minutes at a time. A special version capable of greater depths will also be offered.

Unlike some competing lighting products, Digital Sputnik explains that Voyager utilizes LightGrading software that eliminates the need for technicians to manually adjust every light on a set, instead offering complete control from a smartphone. Assuming the Indiegogo campaign hits its $ 500,000 stretch goal, Digital Sputnik plans to add an integrated WiFi router to Voyager, enabling one unit to act as a router for other units on the set.

The Voyager campaign has thus far raised approximately $ 320,000 in funds, exceeding its $ 300,000 goal with 22 days remaining. Interested consumers can pledge at least $ 290 USD in exchange for a single 2ft Voyager unit or $ 440 USD for a single 4ft Voyager unit. Shipping to these backers is estimated to start in December 2017.

To learn more or put down a pledge of your own, head over to the Indiegogo campaign.

Nikon introduces Coolpix W100 waterproof compact with Snapbridge

02 Aug

$ (document).ready(function() { SampleGalleryV2({“containerId”:”embeddedSampleGallery_5889324935″,”galleryId”:”5889324935″,”isEmbeddedWidget”:true,”standalone”:false,”selectedImageIndex”:0,”startInCommentsView”:false,”isMobile”:false}) });

Nikon has announced the Coolpix W100, a waterproof compact with SnapBridge connectivity, in select Asian and European markets. The W100 appears to be a variation of the Coolpix S33 announced last February for North America, providing the same smartphone-size 13.2MP sensor, 3X optical zoom lens (30-90mm equiv.) and durability – the W100 is waterproof to 32ft/10m, shockproof to 5.9ft/1.8m and freezeproof to +14F/-10C. Full 1080p HD video is also included.

Touted for its kid-friendly ergonomics, the W100 adds connectivity to the mix in the form of its Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.1 LE SnapBridge system. Other additions include the ability to add cartoon effects and stamps to images, as well as an ‘add Light Trails’ mode that uses multiple exposures to capture light trails.

Press release:

Reliable, easy-to-use weatherproof camera with a specially designed menu and additional creative options for every member of the family

TOKYO – Nikon Corporation is pleased to announce the release of the COOLPIX W100, a tough waterproof and shockproof compact digital camera that offers reliable, worry-free use with leisure activities.

The COOLPIX W100 combines reliable image quality with a simple, easy-to-use, animated menu option of Variety Menu, and an ergonomic design for everyone in the family to enjoy fun moments effortlessly. Its compact rounded design, large buttons and intelligent features such as Underwater Face Framing, enable users to capture high quality images and full HD*1 videos easily at the press of a button. New creative options including the Add Cartoon Effects and the Stamp function also aid in cultivating an interest amongst younger users. What’s more, the COOLPIX W100 supports SnapBridge, which establishes a connection between the camera and a smart device, allowing users to easily share the photos they have taken via SNSs and the like, without removing and reinserting the SD memory card.

*1 “Full-HD” indicates recording capability in the 1920 x 1080 format.

COOLPIX W100 primary features

  1. Worry-free performance for use by every member of the family
The camera is dustproof, waterproof to 10 m, shockproof to withstand falls from as high as 1.8 m, and freezeproof to -10°C. It has a tough body that allows it to be used with a wide variety of leisure activities, whether at the pool or the park sandbox, the beach or the ski slopes.
  2. Functions and a level of performance that make capturing beautiful photos easy
The camera has an effective pixel count of 13.2 megapixels*1, and is equipped with a 3x optical zoom NIKKOR lens. It is also equipped with Dynamic Fine Zoom*2, that can be used to achieve approximately 6x zoom with which resolution is preserved in the digital zoom range. In addition, the camera offers a number of functions that make capturing beautiful photos easy, including Underwater Face Framing, which detects and automatically photographs human faces when the camera is in the water, and Target Finding AF*3, with which the camera detects and focuses on the primary subject. What’s more, the camera is equipped with a new Add Light Trails (Multiple Exp. Lighten) mode for photo recording that enables beautiful recording of once difficult light trails made by stars or airplanes.

*1 May be reduced with image processing.
*2 The zoom ratio indicated for Dynamic Fine Zoom is the combined ratio of optical zoom from the maximum wide-angle position and digital zoom.
*3 With shooting in point and shoot mode.

  3. Support for SnapBridge, which expands the ways in which photos are enjoyed
The camera supports SnapBridge, which uses Bluetooth® low energy (BLE) technology to establish a connection between the camera and a smart device. Photos taken with the camera can be automatically transferred*1 to a smart device, and if uploaded from SnapBridge, an unlimited number of thumbnail images can be automatically uploaded*2 from the smart device to Nikon’s photo sharing service, NIKON IMAGE SPACE. Because photos can be transferred via the Internet or shared using an SNS the moment they are taken, sharing the exciting and dramatic moments that occur at leisure destinations is easy.

*1 Original size images or images reduced to 2-megapixel equivalent (JPEG) can be transferred automatically. RAW/TIFF data cannot be transferred. Movies can be transferred by switching to Wi-Fi®, then selecting files manually. Download is not available with AVI files.
*2 To upload images automatically to NIKON IMAGE SPACE, Nikon ID registration (free) is required, which can be easily setup via [Nikon ID registration/change] menu on the SnapBridge application. Only when uploading to NIKON IMAGE SPACE via SnapBridge, JPEG data reduced to 2-megapixel equivalent can be uploaded unlimitedly in number and capacity.

    – The camera’s built-in Wi-Fi®, Bluetooth® and/or NFC® capability can only be used when it is connected to smart devices with the SnapBridge application installed.
    – SnapBridge application is available for a compatible iPhone®, iPad® and/or iPod touch® or smart devices running on the Android™ operating system. The application download is free from Apple App Store® and GooglePlay™
    – The iOS application release date from Apple App Store® will be announced on SnapBridge Microsite as soon as it is determined.

  4. A multitude of shooting and retouch functions that make taking pictures more fun
The camera allows users to express themselves in a variety of ways with effects and frames that can be added with shooting, the ability to change colors and apply effects to images after they are taken, and much more. New creative options such as the Stamp and the Add Cartoon Effects have been introduced. After images are captured, they can be decorated with hearts, stars, or other stamps using the Stamp function, and the Add Cartoon Effects function can be used to make the image look like a panel from a comic by drawing lines. The cameras functions have been greatly enriched to enable greater enjoyment of images.
  5. A function for recording full-HD*1 movies with stereo sound that can be used to preserve high-quality movies of memories
The camera is equipped with a full-HD movie recording function that enables recording of high-quality movies by simply pressing the movie-record button. The effects of camera shake can be effectively reduced with the electronic vibration reduction (VR) function.

*1″Full-HD” indicates recording capability in the 1920 x 1080 format.

  6. Additional features
    – A Variety Menu setting that allows the user to control camera functions according to the user or situation
    – A welcome screen with which the characters and background change according to the time of day, how often the camera is used, the number of pictures taken with the camera, etc., and to which new characters have been added
    – Easy to hold and use, even for children with small hands, designed with a rounded form for a superior grip, and available in five colors, one of which is a new marine pattern
    – An Exchange Messages function that allows users to communicate by recording voice messages

COOPH Field Jacket is 100% waterproof, designed for photographers

14 May

$ (document).ready(function() { SampleGalleryV2({“containerId”:”embeddedSampleGallery_5573536821″,”galleryId”:”5573536821″,”isEmbeddedWidget”:true,”standalone”:false,”selectedImageIndex”:0,”startInCommentsView”:false,”isMobile”:false}) });

Cooperative of Photography (COOPH) has introduced the Field Jacket, designed for photographers and made from a fully waterproof Swiss cotton fabric called EtaProof. The jacket features both inner and outer pockets for carrying photography gear, a quick-access smartphone pocket, and a small loop near the collar to fix a cable (from headphones or a microphone) in place.

The jacket’s material was first used to make overalls for WWII British Hurricane pilots, according to COOPH, offering a mixture of comfort and protection against hypothermia by blocking out water. Used to make COOPH’s Field Jacket, the fabric helps keep both photographers and their stowed gear dry without constricting movement or getting too warm.

The Field Jacket is available in Black and sizes ‘small’ to ‘xx-large’ for €398. COOPH currently ships only within Europe, though some US distribution is becoming available.
