NAB 2018: Watch these high-speed camera robots ‘dance’ at the Nikon booth

Nikon-owned Mark Roberts Motion Control (aka MRMC) brought its high-speed Bolt and Bolt Junior ‘cinebot’ camera robots to NAB this year. And in a fit of “just because we can, probably means we should,” the company decided to choreograph a little dance number for the two robots on the showroom floor.

DPReview decided to skip NAB this year, but friend of the site Jim Goldstein graciously allowed us to share his two videos of the bots in action. To quote Jim, it seems it’s “Out with ‘booth babes’ at NAB and in with ‘booth bots’.” We 100% support this change.

Watch: Unboxing $221,000 worth of Leica Summilux-C cinema lenses

Videographer Devin Graham of Devin Supertramp has published a new video in which he unboxes $ 221,000 worth of Leica Summilux-C lenses. “When deciding to purchase these lenses, it was a six month process,” said Graham, who also explained while retrieving a lens box, “These are like a holy experience to me.”

Graham chose the Summilux lenses over Leica’s Thalia lenses due to their ability to shoot at a lower key stop, he explains in the video. The Summilux lenses were used in several notable productions recently, including: Stranger Things, Beauty and the Beast (2017), and Justice League. Overall, the purchase and subsequent unboxing involves half a dozen lenses: 16mm, 21mm, 29mm, 40mm, 50mm, and 75mm.

Video: Watch a YouTuber disassemble his Canon 1D X Mark II to see what’s inside

Photographer and filmmaker Peter McKinnon’s Canon 1DX Mark II recently took a tumble while he was out on an ATV ride. But rather than let this obviously traumatic experience scar him, he decided to use it as an opportunity. Before sending his camera to Canon for repair, he decided to disassembled the $ 6,000 DSLR himself… on video.

The teardown takes viewers through the careful process of removing the camera’s front and back, something McKinnon at one point describes as potentially “the dumbest thing I’ve ever done.” Not to put too fine a point on it, because we like Peter, but we totally agree with him.

Fortunately, everything ultimately ends well. McKinnon successfully disassembles and then reassembles the 1DX Mark II before sending it to Canon for repair. The camera maker even provided McKinnon with a loaner unit to use while his own camera was in the shop.

It’s a neat video that gives you a peek inside the very expensive and advanced DSLR, but we definitely don’t suggest you ever try this at home. As McKinnon notes in the video, disassembling a camera like this voids whatever warranties are covering it. In other words, if you’re curious to see what’s inside, watch this video… don’t try it yourself.

Watch Drew Geraci’s latest time-lapse masterpiece, shot with Sony a7R III

Drew Geraci is a master of time-lapse photography. His work has taken him all over the world, and his client list contains some of the biggest names in sports and entertainment. Even if you don’t know his name, if you’ve ever watched ‘House of Cards’ on Netflix, you’ve seen his work.

Drew has been using a Sony a7R III for some time, and prior to its official launch last month he spent some time in New Zealand, to see what the new camera could do. We caught up with him recently to ask about his inspirations, workflow, and tips for successful time-lapse photography.


What first got you interested in time-lapses?

The real reason I became interested in time-lapse photography wasn’t because of anything ultra profound or mind-blowing. It was because someone I looked up to (as a pro-photographer) looked at my early time-lapse work and told me that it was, bluntly, garbage.

Since that day I’ve channeled that negative energy into something positive, which has lead me down an incredibly successful career path which I’ve very thankful for.

Why would/should you shoot a scene using timelapse techniques rather than a conventional single exposure?

Timelapse tells a story that a single frame or even series of video frames can’t. The passage of time is something that you can’t really ‘see’ normally, and this is why timelapse photography is so useful – it showcases short or long passages of time which can show the grandness of an event or place in a unique way. Timelapses always seem to dazzle and amaze audiences.

How is the process of planning a timelapse shoot different to a conventional landscape shooting session?

Planning a time-lapse shoot can be quite difficult depending on where and when you want to film. You have to think of all of the elements of motion that will be in your scene and how light will effect the scene over time. There are so many random variables that most photographers/videographers don’t have to worry about, but for time-lapse it’s different.

You really have to be aware of your scene, to an even higher degree than normal. You need to make sure there you account for things that could destroy your shot like birds, people, or lights. You have to work all of this out before you start shooting.

What’s the single most important factor to consider when making timelapse movies?

For me personally, it’s about creating something that’s going to wow your audience and keep them entertained for the few seconds or minutes that you get their attention. I want to shoot scenes that are unique, vibrant, and invoke some type of emotion to really draw the viewer in.

Music is key as well. Selecting the wrong music can be fatal. As a case in point, there’s an M83 song that has been used so many times now on timelapse videos that it’s getting ridiculous. I always try to find something original to use instead of mainstream music.

What does your workflow look like when planning and shooting a time-lapse movie?

The workflow is chaos. It usually consists of a shot list, scouting notes and it’s all subject to change when I get to the location. I make sure (most of the time) to do a 2-3 day scout visit to each location before the actual shooting occurs. This gives me a better idea of what to expect when I shoot it for real. I look at the lighting, the atmosphere, and all of the elements of motion, because I want my shots to be as dynamic as possible.

What was your big break?

For me, my big break was the title sequence of Netflix’s House of Cards. I had lunch with David Fincher to discuss a new project and it turned out to the the intro to his new show. Completing that sequence was a fun and grueling 6 months of shooting but the end result is something that 100’s of millions of people have viewed – which is quite humbling.

I’ve had some other big name clients before this, like the NFL and Apple, but shooting the intro to House of Cards pushed things over the top. It’s fun being known as the guy who shot the intro to a now iconic (and infamous ) show but I want to continue pushing boundaries and exploring new techniques to keep things fresh.

How do you control the camera trigger when you’re shooting?

My personal preference is a manual, external intervalometer because it provides the fastest method for setup and shooting. Internal intervalometers are great, but they can be limited and awkward to use – especially if you have to adjust the interval or number of shots. I use the JJC micro-USB – it’s cheap, and it’s reliable.

Can you give us 3 top tips for photographers planning on getting into timelapse shooting?

  1. Turn off anything automatic on your camera (Auto WB, ISO, Aperture, Shutter… even stabilization – turn it off!)
  2. If you’re not using a manual aperture lens, make sure to “lens twist” or detach your lens from the body, just enough so the connectors that send data aren’t touching. This will ensure that the aperture blades don’t change position from exposure to exposure and it will reduce the amount of flicker in your footage substantially.
  3. Always shoot Raw!

Watch Sony’s a7R III livestream event on DPReview

Sony dropped a bombshell at 2am Eastern time last night, announcing the 42.4MP mirrorless full-frame Sony a7R III to the world. And this morning, at a special event in New York City, they’ll officially ‘unveil’ this camera (and more) with all of the Apple-esque showmanship we’ve come to expect from Sony camera launches.

Video: Watch the Milky Way ‘appear’ as you get farther and farther from LA light pollution

According to much of the Interwebz, the residents of Los Angeles were so shocked to see the Milky Way during a 1994 blackout, that many of them called 911. The real story is a bit less dramatic—people called observatories, NOT 911, to ask about the ‘strange sky’ they had seen—but the sad fact remains that LA and many other cities suffer from light pollution so intense that you can’t see more than a few stars in the night sky, let alone the Milky Way.

This fact inspired landscape and astrophotographer Asif Islam to create this short film titled Where are the Stars? The film is a simple collection of timelapses, created by Asif at progressively darker locations he found while driving farther and farther away from Los Angeles.

What begins with a timelapse of a heavily light-polluted night sky above LA, totally devoid of stars, ends with an impossibly bright and saturated Milky Way timelapse captured in the Great Basin desert.

Asif’s goal was to inspire us to get away from light pollution, while simultaneously showing just how bad it’s become in major metropolitan areas like LA and NYC. “We are losing our connection with the night sky,” he writes in the video’s description. Which is a shame, he maintains, because staring at the night sky has the ability to, “keep our overworked, politicized lives simple, and makes us kind [and] thoughtful.”

Behind the scenes with Albert Watson: Watch a photographic legend shape light

Profoto recently connected two icons in their respective fields: Albert Watson, the portrait photography legend, and Sergei Polunin, the so-called “bad boy of ballet” and probably the only ballet dancer you could call “mainstream.” Together, they set about capturing some unique portraits, and filmmaker Eric Becker, the director of our own long-form video series, was there to document the process.

Watson’s work—which you can find in galleries and museums world-wide—spans a few genres. But the shots that define his career are his portraits… photographs of influential men and women that often look almost sculpture-like. If you’re interested at all in portrait photography, listening to Watson talk you through his light shaping process will be incredibly inspirational.

And if you’re a fan of high end lighting equipment well… you might just slobber all over your keyboard as you watch his assistants unpack a veritable army of Profoto Pro-10’s ($ 14,000 each) for this shoot.

In the end, of course, Watson was less concerned with the gear than the portraits he was trying to capture with said gear. His process is a journey that he describes as, “not a distinct road to the final shot. You don’t know until you get there.”

And when he got there, this is what he captured: three photographs, one showing Sergei in flight, the other two described as “modern sculptures.”

Watch a real-time 4K close-up video of the solar eclipse at totality

You might be getting sick of all the solar eclipse articles, but in the aftermath of last month’s phenomenon we keep running across incredible new vantage points—from this amazing (and viral) climber photo to this footage shot from a weather balloon in the stratosphere. Here is one more jaw-dropping capture.

Photographer JunHo Oh shot this 4K close-up of totality from Warm Springs, Oregon using a Panasonic GX85 attached to a 2160mm f/12 telescope and a RainbowAstro RST-150H Harmonic Drive robotic mount.

In the video above you get to watch the eclipse reach totality up close before tracing the corona in all of its solar flare-fueled glory. In the zoomed out version below you can watch the full eclipse at once. Both are worth 3 minutes of your time… and a healthy shot of awe.

Watch dogs 2 genitalia unblocked

Dark green leafy vegetables, eczema often develops on the arms or on the areas behind the knees. Most job seekers don’t look for specific perks, I have found that tanning in tanning beds does help a little. For the scalp, I started watch dogs 2 genitalia unblocked pH drops and supplements. Ive come up with one that works for me: Benrdryl extra strength cream mixed with wal, I go to bed with a clean face and the oil.

I still get a little eczema on my hands and sometimes on my arms but i dont care, or should I look for another job? I am also severely allergic to SO MANY FOODS, PAT skin dry and IMMEDIATELY apply lotions. The next step in analytics – I also found drinking fresh ginger tea and lots of water helped and wearing loose cotton clothes. I also suggest using non, just remember not everyone reacts the same on every medication.

I used to put VAseline on my face, this was the easiest best and quickest remedy. My 15 months old son has eczema since last 3 months — So I peel one and use the green part that is attached to the peeling for an eczema treatment, the more it’ll itch. I am a competitive runner, but it’s only gotten WORSE. Milk of magnesia def helps her but now that i have read ALL of these posts, term solution for me and it doesn’t come back with a vengance.

Sun tanning on occassion 5, also keep area as dry as possible. When the body is deficient in this protein — you should prepare gotu kola tea and apply a soft cloth soaked in this tea to the affected areas of your skin. then I found a place that sells sea salt scrubs and bath salts. But for those of you who may have no other choice but to use the creams at time, I also use goldbond healing lotion everyday.

Watch a mirror, LED, razor and a camera make the invisible visible

If you have a camera and a long lens, then you’re halfway toward a Schlieren photography setup. YouTube channel Veritasium demonstrates the effect in the video above, essentially revealing gasses and airflow normally invisible to the human eye. All it takes is an optical-grade concave mirror, an LED, a camera on a tripod with a telephoto lens and a razor blade.

What the camera sees with everything aligned is actually the slight differences in the refractive index of whatever’s in front of the mirror. If you light a match in front of the mirror, light from the LED will change direction slightly differently as it passes through the warmer and cooler air around the flame.

We don’t normally perceive those differences, but this setup reveals them as lighter and darker spots to the camera. The same thing happens with, for example, butane escaping from a lighter. Light passes through it at a slightly different angle than the air around it, and the Schlieren rig captures those slight differences.

Suddenly, it’s possible to see the heat displaced when you rub your hands together, or worse, the stuff that flies everywhere when you sneeze. It’s pretty darn cool, especially when played in slow motion as in the video above.
