American Idle: 12 Weird & Wacky Drive-Thru Businesses

Drive-thru is all about fast food, fast service & fast company though getting what you want without ever leaving your ride can get a little weird at times.

Drinking and gunplay: two things that should never be done in a hurry, not to mention together. That’s what makes “Double Shot Liquor & Guns Drive Thru” so disturbingly delightful. While far from being the only drive-thru booze & boomstick emporium – think about THAT, if you dare – the Schulenburg, Texas business stands out thanks to its creative name and the ever-changing messages on its sign.

Mourning Commute

It’s not just life in the fast lane anymore. Sure, funerals can be uncomfortable and “viewings” are a tad creepy. That’s still no excuse for- er, actually it IS an excuse for drive-thru windows at funeral homes! Obviously there’s some demand for this feature, as the Paradise Funeral Chapel in Saginaw, Michigan has drive-thru counterparts in California, South Carolina and Virginia. When drivers pull up to the bulletproof glass (why bulletproof?) window, a motion sensor draws back the curtains allowing mourners to pay their final respects to the en-casketed loved one. Would you like flies with that?

Fastest Cash

We’ll bet this is one of Chumlee’s ideas. If you’re looking to hock the family jewels on your way outta Dodge, then Dean’s Drive-Thru Pawn Shop in Oklahoma City is your one-stop-shop for a quick (and hopefully lucrative) getaway. All bets are off, however, if your clever plan involves driving in and pawning your car.

A tattoo may be forever but ain’t nobody got time for that. Good thing there’s Outlaw Tattoo, your Route 66 headquarters for while-u-wait permanent body illustration. At least there was – the Tucumcari, New Mexico landmark appears to have been driven out of business, possibly by dissatisfied customers who own rough-idling vehicles. Kudos to Todd Longwood of A Love Of Two Brains for exposing this dist-inked drive-thru concept.

Oh, and for those who feel drive-thru tattooing isn’t too far of a stretch… yeah, what could possibly go wrong?

Odd Offices: 13 Wacky Outside-the-Box Workspace Designs

Unless you happen to work at Google, your conventional office space is going to seem awfully boring compared to the slides, disappearing desks, submarine-inspired meeting pods, turfed running tracks and other unusual design choices at these 13 highly creative workplaces.

Monolithic Chair-Free Office

There are no chairs to be found in this faceted office space full of sloping geometric surfaces – workers have to either stand, perch on benches or lounge. Not that they’re complaining. Developed by design studio RAAAF and visual artist Barbara Visser, the workplace design is entitled ‘The End of Sitting.’ “The installation’s various affordances solicit visitors to explore different standing positions in an experimental work landscape.”

Wave-Like ‘Superdesk’

One single desk surface weaves and undulates through the office for a digital creative industry like a ribbon, rising up in spots to create arched entrances to tucked-away work areas. The glossy, gleaming ‘Superdesk’ by Clive Wilkinson Architects seats all 125 employees of The Barbarian Group and transforms what would normally be considered furniture into architecture complete with roofs. The undersides of the desk offer storage, and occasionally reach heights that are tall enough to create private little alcoves.

Shipping Container Offices

Clive Wilkinson and Associates also created an incredible shipping container-based work environment for Pallotta Teamworks in a new and entirely empty 47,000-square-foot warehouse in Los Angeles. The firm had to do the project on half the usual budget for such a space, making it difficult to even fully air-condition it, so they came up with a creative solution: seven tented villages or ‘breathing islands’ that are climate-controlled while the rest of the space is not.

Disappearing Desks

There’s no danger of overworking yourself at Amsterdam design studio Hedergroen: once office hours are up, staff desks simply disappear. Computers, paperwork and other desktop items remain in place as the desks raise up to the ceiling on steel cables. When morning comes, they drop down again, resting on rolling cabinets for stability.

Inges Idee’s 3D² Court

We’re not sure if the Occupational School Center Munich in Germany even has a basketball team but if they don’t, they should, since their decidedly out of the ordinary three-dimensional court takes the concept of home field advantage to absurd levels.

Titled 3D² by artist Inges Idee and created in 2006, the regulation-sized basketball court incorporates several of the existing lamp posts that – besides providing light – add an extra dimension of difficulty to any attempted game. According to Idee, playing on the computer-designed court “requires creative engagement for its use.” No kidding.

Space Jammed

Space is at a premium in the ancient seaside city of Dubrovnik but so is the desire to go one-on-one with one’s fellow dribblers. Captured magnificently by Flickr user SloTraveller, this otherwise unremarkable clay court shoehorned between centuries-old buildings is a favorite photographic subject aided by some spectacular points of view.

Ducks Dunks Deluxe

“Riding the pine” took on a new and better meaning for members of the University of Oregon Ducks when, in 2011, their strikingly stenciled new basketball court was unveiled to the public. “We wanted to design the most iconic television presence possible for the University of Oregon,” explained Nike’s vice president for design and special projects Tinker Hatfield, “by conjuring up a highly unique and visible basketball floor design” at Matthew Knight Arena. We’d say they succeeded.

Intended to reflect the view of someone looking skyward from a Pacific Northwest forest floor, the court is made from 6,944 square feet of sustainably-harvested Northern Hard Maple weighing approximately 45,000 total pounds. The graphics were completed by Idaho Falls, Idaho -based United Services using almost 2 miles of stencil material and requiring 2,500 man hours of labor.
