TwoEyes VR stereoscopic camera simulates human vision

21 Jan

Another VR camera has launched on Kickstarter, but this one does things a little differently: TwoEyes VR features two horizontally-oriented cameras spaced 65mm apart that record footage in a stereoscopic arrangement. The resulting 3D video simulates the way someone would see the subject with their own eyes.

TwoEyes VR features two F2.0 180-degree lenses spaced 65mm apart, which is said to be the average distance between human eyes. The two cameras (CMOS 1/2.3” sensors), when used together, can record 3D videos in both 180 and 360 degrees, while recording with just one camera results in 360-degree non-3D footage. The camera also supports generating red-cyan 3D footage.

Content is stored to an internal 128GB drive, while other camera features including a 4K image processor, 2,000mAh battery, Bluetooth 4.1, dual-band WiFi, WiFi Direct, and a gyro sensor. The related Android and iOS mobile apps offer users live video previews from the camera, two-button shooting controls, and a post-processing tool for generating either 3D, VR, or 360 videos.

The team behind TwoEyes is seeking funding on Kickstarter, where they have raised more than double their $ 40,000 goal with 36 days remaining in the campaign. A ‘Kickstarter Pack’ is offered to backers who pledge at least $ 239 — it includes the camera and global shipping. Shipments to backers are expected to start this upcoming August.

Mobility Vision: Hyundai Concept Connects Smart Home to Driverless Car

12 Jan

[ By SA Rogers in Technology & Vehicles & Mods. ]

mobility-vision-1

Who needs a garage when your autonomous vehicle could simply pull up into a port inside your home and seamlessly integrate itself with the interior? Hyundai wants to give us all another reason to spend hours inside our cars by effectively turning them into furniture when they’re not in use. Its ‘Mobility Vision’ concept, unveiled at this year’s CES (Consumer Electronics Show) in Las Vegas, blurs the lines between architecture and automobiles more than ever.

mobility-vision-2

The driverless car essentially plugs into the house when you’re done with a trip, and then the driver’s seat, which is mounted on a pivoting arm, can slide right into the living space for use as a chair. The idea is never having to stop what you’re doing and metaphorically shift gears between travel time and home time; stuff you leave in the car is easily accessible, babies can continue sleeping in their carseats, and there’s no fumbling for keys.

mobility-vision-4

A single door, almost the height and width of the entire car, opens upward to delineate the space between the car’s interior and the living room. You can even run the car’s heat or air conditioning to adjust the temperature of your house, and use the car stereo to play music at home. Perhaps the most important detail: the car is powered by a hydrogen fuel cell, so it’s quiet, and there’s no danger of breathing unhealthy fumes.

mobility-vision-7

mobility-vision-6

It’s just a concept, and not likely to become a reality anytime soon – but could it be a glimpse into what mobility will look like in the not-so-distant future? It seems entirely possible, but it’s not clear how many people want to just sit around in their cars for no reason when there’s probably a perfectly good couch just a few feet away.

Samsung uses brain-inspired processors to create digital camera ‘vision’

17 Aug

Samsung has used IBM’s neuromorphic computer processors, built under the latter company’s TrueNorth project, to create digital ‘eyes’ that see in real time. The IBM TrueNorth processors are composed of 4096 small cores that simulate brain neurons, the primary advantage being faster data processing with lower comparative energy usage. Combined with Samsung’s Dynamic Vision Sensor, the technology functions somewhat like a digital eye, perceiving the world by changing each pixel independently of the others to record movement.

Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology’s VP of Research Eric Ryu detailed the technology at an IBM Research event in San Jose last week. Unlike ordinary cameras, this DVS-based camera only changes pixels when necessary to record the movement of specific objects while other pixels remain unchanged. Because of the unique pixel technology, this camera can process video at 2000 fps while using only about 300mW of energy.

The combination of super high frame rates and exceptionally low energy consumption makes the technology useful for other types of technology, including self-driving cars, robots, gesture-recognizing gadgets, and more. Samsung envisions projects that utilize many of these chips stacked together; a 16-chip stack would be akin to utilizing nearly 86 billion brain neurons.

Press release:

Lumigon launches T3, a premium smartphone with unique features in Scandinavian design

Lumigon announces the launch of the T3 smartphone, integrating minimalistic Scandinavian design with durable steel exterior and innovative features such as a night vision camera and the innovative BackTouch technology, so far never seen before in mobile phones.

“We wanted to create a new smartphone that reflects our design philosophy,” says Lumigon CEO Lars Gravesen. “The glass and steel used in the T3 are extremely durable, but that doesn’t mean sacrificing the look and feel of the phone. In fact, it provides a great balance between design, premium materials, innovation and technology.”

In addition to the classic versions, the T3 is also available in a gold edition with four different models, to fulfil the needs of customers who like it a little more extraordinary.

Innovative design, inside and out
The exterior of T3 is crafted from molybdenum 316 stainless steel, whose strength and high resistance is known from the boat industry. This durability is further enhanced with scratch and damage resistant glass. Both the front and back of the phone are of Corning® Gorilla® Glass to help ensure the 4.8” HD Super AMOLED Diamond display is not spoiled by screen cracks. These robust materials were carefully selected and precisely crafted to create a dust and water-resistant phone that can withstand daily use, while retaining the sleek design of an exclusive product.

These details extend to the interior, which is powered by an ultra-fast 2.2 GHz 64 bit 8-core processor with 3 GB RAM running Android™ 6.0, making this smartphone run smooth and fast. Lars Gravesen continues, “In a world with such huge demands for data, we wanted to give our customers enough capacity that will make users hardly run out of space, thus we decided to launch the T3 with 128 GB internal memory as standard.”

Being a truly versatile device, the T3 also features a 4G Dual Nano SIM slot allowing the use of two SIM cards simultaneously. These can be hot-swapped without shutting down the phone, allowing for exceptional agility on the go.

Perfect picture – day and night
The T3 comes with three cameras and provides high quality photography regardless of time of day or lighting conditions. The 4K HD camera takes ultra-sharp photos while the advanced Phase Detection Autofocus find its focus point instantly. The 2K HD front camera with innovative FrontFlash allows for perfect selfies even in dark environments. The mirror in combination with the FrontFlash turns this phone to a gadget that the ladies will find very handy when fixing their makeup on the go.

The T3 is the first smartphone in the world to have a 2K HD Night Vision camera that can capture photos and videos even in total darkness.

BackTouch
The innovative BackTouch technology enables to scroll content on the display from the back of the phone and is very convenient when taking selfies as the user just needs to tap on the BackTouch. This brand new feature introduces easy one-handed navigation and improved swiping and scrolling capabilities.

Secured
T3 has cutting-edge security and interface features. The 360° ceramic fingerprint reader provides added security along with 740 unique Vault feature that lets the user store private and confidential information on the phone. The data within the Vault is secure and encrypted with AES 256-bit algorithm.

Make it Your Way
T3 is provided in three classic colours, black, white and orange as well as the exclusive series, like the elegant 24-karat gold in four different models. Users can then show their individual looks, while those who want to experience the next level of luxury can leave their mark with a personal engraving.

Mr Gravesen says, “The T3 was created for users who want something different and want to stand out from the crowd.”

“To me,” he continues, “Danish design reflects craftsmanship, simplicity and real-life functionality, taking high-quality materials and combining them with innovative features to create a clean premium product. That was the design mindset that brought us to the creation of the T3 smartphone.”

Availability
The T3 is available for purchase at the Lumigon web shop and at selected dealers worldwide at a price starting from EUR 645/DKK 4799 for the stainless steel versions with 128 GB internal memory. The sales box also includes a stainless steel designer headset created from quality materials and with precision in every detail.

12 December, 2014 – Special Antarctica Offer and An Article About Color and Human Vision Anomalies

12 Dec

A few years ago I was traveling with LuLa’s good friend Bill Atkinson.  Over dinner one night we got into a conversation on color and how the human eye and mind see color.  It was quite fascinating not to mention mind boggling.  Bill is one of the industries experts on color. Over the years, we have published stories about Color and Human Vision.  The way the eye sees color is quite fascinating. Today Charles Johnson Sr. shares his article on Observing and Managing Color: Dealing With Human Vision Anomalies.   An interesting read on understanding how we see color especially when working photographically.

A Special Message from Michael Reichmann

The Luminous Landscape, together with John and Roxie Walker of Switzerland, have created an opportunity for one or two people to join our January 26th, 2015 photographic expedition to Antarctica (there are two berths available).  The Walkers were early registrants for this extraordinary odyssey, unfortunately for personal reasons they will now not be able to fulfill this dream opportunity.  However, in the spirit of the season and with a deep desire to advance the art and craft of photography, we are pleased to offer the following unique opportunity:

Rather than simply resell their two berths,  Kevin, the Walkers and I have found a "silver lining" in this unfortunate turn of events and, as a result, we are pleased to make these two berths available as a thank-you gift for a meaningful donation to The Luminous Endowment for Photographers.
