Rendezvous – Death Valley National Park

10 Nov

The desert always brings time in to focus when I visit. Desert features are formed at such a slow pace that it is tough to imagine. Some features of the desert take decades, centuries and even millennia to form. With this in mind it’s always a treat to arrive and see something that is fleeting not just in relation to my visit, but to the larger span of geological time. Knowing that the formations I photograph take so long to be created by Mother Nature, it’s a pleasant reminder to slow down to appreciate them let alone photograph them.

When I stumbled across this scene of two rocks nearly intersecting at the Racetrack in Death Valley National Park I couldn’t help but wonder how long it took for them to reach this point and how much longer it will take for them to intersect. For now their rendezvous will have to wait, but for how long?

Badwater Sunset, Death Valley National Park

03 Nov

It’s good to be back from Death Valley National Park. I was fortunate on many fronts while in Death Valley National Park. The members of my Racetrack photo tour were great, we had unbelievable light and incredibly clear skies to enjoy every star in the sky! Weather conditions were unseasonably cold with temperatures dipping down below 26F, but that didn’t slow us down.

Conditions at Badwater this trip were particularly nice with the salt flats recovering to their former glory. The hexagonal shapes of the salt were clearly seen and quite white. A nice change from my previous visit with very flat muddy grey salt formations.

I have many photos from this trip that I’m eager to share including some amazing night sky and star trail photos. Stay tuned for those! In the meantime here’s a sample of what we experienced on this trip. If you’re interested in joining me in February I’ll be repeating this trip to Death Valley to make the most of the new moon, so as to see every star in the sky – 2012 Death Valley Photo Tour Info.

Racetrack by Starlight – Death Valley National Park

07 Aug

The racetrack in Death Valley National Park is a place that always leaves me in awe of nature. The tracks left behind stones on this dry lake bed have a mysterious magical quality to them and even more so at night. Photographed on the same evening as Racetrack Light Lasso and Racetrack Light Lasso II, in this version of the scene I took a less radical image to highlight the natural beauty of the stone and lake bed.

I’m looking forward to returning to the Racetrack later this year on my next photo tour. This particular photo tour in October is booked, but if you’re interested in joining me to this amazing location on my next Death Valley photo tour get on the waiting list via my contact form. I’ll be announcing my next Death Valley dates in the coming weeks.

Ghostbusters Animated – Secrets Of Mastadon Valley

05 Jul

After defeating Apparitia and Airhead the Ghostbusters head back to prehistoric times, looking for another piece of the stone.

Cool music, colorful animation, and lots of humor—thats our secret formula for getting kids excited and motivated to learn about fractions and decimals. Kid-appealing songs and rhymes help students of all ages learn new terms and remember the rules about congruent parts, equivalent fractions, proper and improper fractions, mixed numerals, decimals, and more.

Spring in Yosemite Valley

06 Jun

Yosemite National Park is a sight to see in the Spring. The scenery is of course stunning with full waterfalls, iconic formations and a good deal of wildlife. It’s been a while since I’ve been to Yosemite in the Spring primarily due to the crowds. I broke my streak of avoiding the valley during peak time and it was amazing even with late rains that bookended my short trip. Its no wonder that the park gets busier and busier. I’m reviewing my photos from this week now, but I thought I’d share a few photos from my iPhone in the meantime. Enjoy!

Yosemite Valley Chapel in Snow Storm

26 Dec

It’s not often I’ve watched snowfall and by that I mean “watch” snow fall. As a child I’ve waited for snowfall to end in order to be let out to play and as an adult I’ve darted from point A to B in a car while it has started to snow, but in both of these instances my mind was elsewhere preoccupied on other goals and activities. To simply watch snow fall is amazing, and to rediscover it behind a camera is an experience everyone should enjoy.

Yosemite Valley Chapel in Snow Storm

Last year I was very fortunate to time a visit to Yosemite valley to witness the first snowfall of the year. Much to my surprise it was also the storm of the season dropping 11 inches of snow and transforming a golden brown valley into a white winter wonderland overnight. It also made for a very interesting time in a small tent, but that is another story.

While photography is all about light, it is as much about how you see the world. To that end you have to be in the right mindset and position to observe the world before you. My time in Yosemite on this trip was first and foremost to experience nature at its best, second to hone my skills to see it and third to photograph it. To each of these ends here are 3 tips that helped me get the photo featured here today.

  1. To experience nature at its best monitor the weather and be there when its most dramatic.
  2. To hone ones observational skills look at the world as a child might, where every experience is new and a source of curiosity & exploration.
  3. To photograph a snow scene such as this over expose the image 1 to 1 1/2 stops via exposure compensation on your SLR otherwise your camera will meter the snow as 18% gray.

Mesquite Dunes, Death Valley National Park

28 Apr

Experiencing the purity of nature is always exhilarating. Nothing to me exemplifies the purity of nature more than the untouched patterns found in the desert. While often explored by Death Valley National Park visitors the desert winds always reclaim Mother Nature’s domain. These still moments are fleeting and oh so prized.
