Mike Olbinski releases stunning sunset time-lapse featuring unusual cloud formations

‘Tis the season for dramatic weather in the middle parts of the US, and as such, it’s also the season for incredible time-lapse videos. If you thought we reached peak weather time-lapse just last week when we posted Chad Cowan’s excellent Fractal, well, see what you think after watching Mike Oblinski’s latest.

He captured unusual cloud formations called Undulatus Asperatus rolling across the plains of North Dakota at sunset. As always, we recommend going full screen and cranking the resolution up.

Devoted: 12 Weird & Unusual Election Polling Places

Voting in elections is one of our most cherished democratic rights but where we vote – and who the candidates are – can leave a lot to be desired.

Polling places (or “polling stations”, as they’re known in the UK) are by their nature temporary establishments typically situated in schools or community centers. Sometimes, however, alternative voting locations must be set up when conveniently located suitable buildings are not available. Take the example above – the Urbanimal Pet Store in Chicago, IL – where local resident Barbara Hunter exercises her democratic rights while Oreo the cat exercises his legs.

A Grave Matter

OK, so Chicago is notorious for its “deceased voters” but it’s not the only pace where those who’ve passed on can pass judgement on candidates. Here’s a polling station sign in the Wimbledon Church graveyard that looks eerily like the nearby tombstones. We wouldn’t be surprised if some nearsighted oldster leaves a bouquet of flowers at its base.

Sure, most politicians are full of hot air and most voters are fed up with the windbags by the time election day finally rolls around. Well, what goes around comes around in Brighton, UK where returning officer Ahmed Jamee and volunteer assistants open a polling station set up inside the historic West Blatchington Windmill.

Political Life Finds A Way

One would hope the owner of this slapdash voting station in Mitrovica-North, Kosovo doesn’t have “Free Candy” scrawled on the other side of his van. Kudos to Flickr user Mitra Nazar for showcasing this small and conveniently mobile Balkan polling station in December of 2010.

Ilford Photo announces ordering program for unusual sizes of sheet film

UK film manufacturer Harman Technologies has announced that orders are being taken for unusual sheet and roll film sizes in its annual program for supplying low volume and custom-sized Ilford Photo materials for vintage and large format camera owners. Rather than making odd sizes on the chance that they will sell, the company uses it Ultra Large Format (ULF) program to collect orders from the public and institutions through specified retailers and sets aside time especially to produce film to fit old cameras.

The company offers these odd sizes in Ilford FP4 Plus, HP5 Plus and Delta 100 Professional black and white emulsions. Sheet materials as large as 20 x 24in. and as small as 2.25 x 3.25in. are on offer, as well as roll film in 46mm (127 film) and 70mm widths. Sheet sized film is also available in rolls for users to cut themselves, and can be ordered in widths of up to 20in (x 50ft). Some sizes have no minimum order volumes and can be ordered as a single box.

Buoyed by the fantastic response from the film photography community around the world, HARMAN technology Limited are delighted to be offering film photographers the opportunity to place orders for a range of specialist film products for the 11th consecutive year.

With the continued revival in film photography, it is vital to have film available for photographers using ultra large format alongside previously popular film formats for antique and collectable cameras.

By consolidating orders HARMAN technology can supply products that would not normally be viable to manufacture.

“This program enables us to further support the world of film photography that uses and values our conventional products” said Giles Branthwaite, Director of Sales and Marketing at Harman technology. “Through running the ULF program each year, we are able to satisfy the strong demand for specialist film formats. Whilst manufacture is not easy, we have been rewarded by increased demand year on year ensuring we will continue to address and care for this market.”

Films available for this year are ILFORD FP4 PLUS, HP5 PLUS, and DELTA 100 PROFESSIONAL. Not all films are available in all formats.

The options available reflect what has been asked for over the past 10 years. HARMAN is happy to consider any other size suggestions but do not guarantee to make them available.
For sheet sizes an order for just one single box can be made, but for roll sizes this is not possible due to potentially excessive waste. Please see the minimums and multiples required next to the appropriate roll size.

Note:
Orders must be placed with the listed ULF reseller partners no later than Friday 27th May.

The UK factory will start to ship orders to Distributors during August and end users should check with the local ULF reseller for expected arrival dates.

Butcher Chopped: 15 Bloody Unusual Meat Markets

Traditional independent meat markets are dying off faster than the products they serve, though these 15 unusual butcher shops somehow managed to make the cut.

If a møøse ønce bit yøur sister, here’s your chance for revenge… or so it would appear. Gord’s Butcher Shop was run (by Gord, presumably) out of an abandoned trailer in Port au Choix, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. The above images taken in January and September of 2012 don’t reveal if Gord really butchered moose (mooses? meeses? whatever!) inside, and we may never know for sure: when Flickr user Oleo snapped the store in 2015 it had lost its power connection. Don’t ye be messin’ wit’ da moose, lord tunderin!

We Bloody Well Deliver

Flickr user Dan Field (FieldDan) came across this curious Granada Hills, CA combination meat/mail market on September 15th of 2007. “Going postal is much easier when you have a meat cleaver,” observes one of the commenters at the photo page… gee thanks, Erik, for that disturbing observation.

If the sign says Meat You Can Eat, you know you’re not in my kitchen. Flickr user(s) Stig & Lisa snapped this snappily-named meat market on July 27th of 2008 though the shop was closed at the time. As the sign in the window advertises “Whole Baby Rump,” one would hope local child protection services made the closing permanent.

No, Bueller-fans, the Bari PORK STORE is located in Brooklyn, not Chicago. Flickr user Frank Winters snapped the self-styled “King Of The Sausage” on February 16th, 2009. Known For Quality, the Bari PORK STORE offers “self service” (butcher your own hogzilla?), caters parties – sausage parties, most likely – and proudly boasts “Nobody Beats The King”… at least, not in the category of over-the-top store signage.

OK, we all know where the packaged meat sold in supermarkets originally comes from but isn’t this a little too close for comfort? Won’t somebody think of the children? Speaking of which, hey little Jimmy, stop petting that rib roast!

Don’t Lets Tart: 10 Odd & Unusual Pop-Tart Flavors

Introduced in 1964, Kellogg’s Pop-Tarts have become a pop culture phenomenon boasting a host of odd & unusual flavors only a Nyan Cat could love.

Strawberry Pop-Tarts taste like strawberries, S’mores Pop-Tarts taste like S’mores, and Hello Kitty Pop-Tarts taste like Japan’s sweetest character cat, of course! Credit Flickr users Valent1ne Apogee and Jason Cosper (boogah) for the photos above.

Hello Kitty Pop-Tarts featured “Meow-Berry” filling, whatever that is. Considering the pink frosting iss embedded with little Hello Kitty faces and red hair bows, the sickly sweet gooey red filling must be… noooo, let’s not go there! And ignore the chainsaw in Annellese Zemp‘s photo above as it has ZERO connection to the manufacturing of Hello Kitty Pop-Tarts. Yeah, that’s the ticket!

Pop-Tarts may have been inspired by traditional English mince pies but does that mean every possible pie flavor works as a Pop-Tart filling? Whether it works or not, Kellogg’s is gonna give it a shot. Take Pumpkin Pie Pop-Tarts… you were expecting maybe Pumpkin Spice? No doubt those are on the way but for now (actually, autumn of 2013), harvest-flavor aficionados like Mike Mozart will have to feed their craving with Pumpkin Pie Pop-Tarts. Mike appears to be enjoying them but will he look so cheery after nomming all 16?

Hmm, last time someone ate a flag (we’re lookin’ at you, Zoidberg) there was hell to pay. Such considerations didn’t seem to bother Kellogg’s and the producers of American Idol back in July of 2006, however. These limited edition Wild Strawberry-flavored and patriotically-frosted Pop-Tarts were promoted during the 2006 American Idol Tour. Judging from the crowd of snack-samplers above, free Pop-Tarts are the last thing America’s idle need.

Evil Espresso: 13 Amazing Artistic & Unusual Coffee Machines

Your countertop coffee maker will suddenly look inadequate compared to a monster of a sculptural espresso machine, an elegant steampunk orb and a piston-powered copper coffee maker fit for a villain’s lair. These 13 artistic, high-end and highly unusual coffee and espresso machine designs take the process of brewing your essential daily caffeine intake to the next level and then some.

Would you ever guess, seeing it across a room, that this thing is a coffee maker? Dutch Lab created this Gothic-themed steampunk ‘monster’ intending for it to look a bit evil. The AKMA is named for the Korean word for ‘devil,’ and like all of Dutch Lab’s coffee machines, it uses a cold-brew technique relying on the force of gravity and a very particular grind of coffee beans – finer than those used for drip coffee, but coarser than those used for espresso.

Coffee Alarm Clock

Coffee could literally be your alarm clock with the Barisieur, which brews up a single cup of fresh coffee at a designated time. It doesn’t just wake you up with smell, but also with gentle sounds as the process begins and the water starts to boil. It does require a bit of preparation at night, but as the designer notes, it “encourages a ritual before going to sleep, signaling to the body and mind that it is time to unwind and relax.”

Another steampunk design looks like something straight out of a scientist’s laboratory. Café Balão by Davide Mateus consists of a pair of hand-blown glass vessels, one of which contains a wand-style heating element to boil the water. This siphoning coffee maker uses vapor pressure and vacuum to produce coffee, with vapor from boiling water in the lower chamber forcing water into the upper chamber containing the coffee grinds. When the heat turns off, gravity pulls the brewed coffee into the lower vessel.

Piston-Powered Espresso Machine

You’ll feel like you’re doing something diabolical when you pull the lever on the Streitman ES3 Espresso Machine, except instead of blowing something up or revealing a secret lair, you’ll be starting the piston-powered process of making a cup of espresso. The sleek wood and copper design forces hot water through ground coffee with a piston, and is available with a dual spout for making more than one cup at a time. It doesn’t come cheap, retailing at $ 1,700.

Minimalist Single-Serving Brewing Device

Is this the world’s most minimalist coffee maker? The Canadiano is a single-serving brewing device made of wood, which you simply place on top of a mug. Add coffee grounds, pour in some hot water and wait for your brewed coffee to seep through the metal filter. It’s available in three different wood varieties which ‘remember’ your choice of coffee, building up the oils of your specific beans and roast over time.

Kim Jong Il Leaves an Unusual Architectural Legacy

Started in 1987 and still not complete, North Korea’s Ryugyong Hotel is perhaps its most potent architectural symbol, and an odd legacy for an odd and secretive leader. The 105-floor, pyramid-shaped hotel has towered over the city of Pyongyang in a mostly abandoned state since 1992, when construction was halted due to a period of economic crisis after the fall of the Soviet Union.

The 1,080-foot-tall (330-meter) tower was slated to be completed this year, but it retains its title as the tallest unoccupied building in the world. It was initially intended to be complete by the 13th World Festival of Youth and Students in June 1989, at which point it would have been the world’s tallest hotel; however, it was eclipsed in 2009 by the spire atop the Rose Tower in Dubai.

For the sixteen years in which the tower was abandoned, it was a glaring concrete eyesore. Called “The Worst Building in the History of Mankind” by Esquire Magazine, the 3,000-room hotel has sucked up more than two percent of North Korea’s gross domestic product, while a large number of the nation’s citizens go hungry. Why would Kim Jong Il have believed that this city, which is so poor it can’t afford to light up the streets at night, would need to accommodate so many visitors?

Construction resumed on the hotel in 2008, and in 2011, the mirrored facade was finally completed thanks to an influx of $ 180 million from an Egyptian telecommunications company. The group that reportedly manages the hotel has refused to give an expected completion date, saying “Market entry is not currently possible.” The fate of the hotel remains unclear.

Warped Materials: Unusual Rubber, Wood & Metal Furnitures

The form factors of familiar furniture tend to be rather concrete in our minds. When we think of a chair, we expect it to look like a chair – and likewise for tables, benches, and so forth. But by playing with materials, functionality and appearances, furniture designer Thomas Schnur makes us totally re-think our preconceived ideas about furniture.

End tables and plungers are two household items which are so common they are often overlooked. The Rubber Table combines the two into a completely new and kind of bizarre piece of furniture. It’s a flexible rubber tabletop supported by five small plungers which, when pushed in gently, cause the table to adhere to whatever surface it is on through suction.

The beer bench is a symbol of fun times in Germany and everywhere else in the world with beer tents and summer festivals. Schnur’s High Shelf uses the same type of folding legs to bring a simple open metal cabinet up to a usable height. The resulting pieces allow the festival mindset to persist year-round in a home.

The monobloc chair is said to be the world’s most popular chair. The simple stackable plastic lawn chair can be seen in back yards around the world. Schnur took the monobloc aesthetic and extended it into a surprisingly stylish fiberglass bench. As a tongue-in-cheek nod to the Benchchair’s design inspiration, one side of the bench looks just like the classic monobloc chair.
