Nikon delays its D6 DSLR until May 2020, due to supplier issues caused by COVID-19

10 Mar

Nikon USA has announced it is delaying the release of its new D6 DSLR due to issues caused by COVID-19.

In a short announcement on its website, embedded below, Nikon USA says the D6 has been delayed ‘As a result of delays in the procurement of parts and components from a third-party cooperating company due to measures implemented in response to the spread of COVID-19.’ Nikon says the new release timeframe is May 2020 and notes it ‘announce the new release date once it has been determined.’

This delay will further push the release date closer to the 2020 Olympics, which is set to take place in Tokyo from July 24 through August 9. However, as coronavirus cases and mortalities due to the virus ramp up, the likelihood of the Olympics being delayed or downright canceled increases as well.

Apology and Notice of Delay in the Release of the Nikon D6 Digital SLR Camera

MELVILLE, NY – Thank you for choosing Nikon for your photographic needs.

As a result of delays in the procurement of parts and components from a third-party cooperating company due to measures implemented in response to the spread of COVID-19, the release of the new Nikon D6 digital SLR camera, originally planned for March 2020, will be delayed. We sincerely apologize to our customers and all those concerned for any inconvenience this may cause.

We are now planning to release the Nikon D6 in May 2020 and will announce the new release date once it has been determined.

We will continue to closely monitor the situation and do our utmost to deliver this new camera as soon as possible. Thank you for your understanding and patience in this matter.

Report: iPhone users will have to wait until 2019 for a triple-camera device

09 May

If you want a smartphone with a triple-camera setup, Huawei’s P20 Pro is currently your only option. And vy the looks of it, this won’t change any time soon… at least not if you prefer to stick to Apple’s iPhone over Android devices. According to a report in the Taipei Times—which is citing a research note from Yuanta Securities analyst Jeff Pu—Apple is likely to launch a triple-camera iPhone model, but this won’t happen before the second half of 2019.

Like on the Huawei, the third lens would likely provide a 3x optical zoom, improving zoom quality over the current top-models’ 2x lenses. It’s also fair to assume the triple-camera will be reserved for a flagship device, likely a third generation iPhone X that could launch around September of next year if Apple sticks to its usual launch schedule.

This scenario is supported by another previous report by former KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who ruled out any significant changes to Apple’s current dual-camera system on the iPhone X and 8 Plus for the 2018 models.

Report: Apple won’t release the next Mac Pro until 2019

07 Apr
Credit: Apple

Apple delivered some slightly disappointing news to professional users in an interview with TechCrunch this week. Speaking with the tech publication, Senior director of Mac Hardware Product Marketing Tom Boger revealed that the next version of the Mac Pro is not coming in 2018. It will be a 2019 product.

The current Mac Pro—colloquially referred to as the trash can Mac Pro because of its form factor—was released all the way back in 2013, and even Apple admitted that the design was a mistake. In April of 2017, Apple executive Craig Federighi told BuzzFeed News that the company had “designed ourselves into a bit of a corner” with the circular form-factor, and Phil Schiller promised users that Apple was “completely rethinking the Mac Pro” for the next generation.

Since then, we haven’t heard much, and professional users not content with the all-in-one form-factor of the powerful new iMac Pro were holding out purchasing it in the hopes that the next Mac Pro was right around the corner. It sounds like Apple knows this, and decided to be un-characteristically candid with the professional community through this TechCrunch interview:

“We want to be transparent and communicate openly with our pro community, so we want them to know that the Mac Pro is a 2019 product,” says Boger. “We know that there’s a lot of customers today that are making purchase decisions on the iMac Pro and whether or not they should wait for the Mac Pro.”

Professional creatives who are married to the Apple ecosystem—particularly high-end video producers—still have a choice to make: purchase an iMac Pro now, or wait a year (or more) for the next generation Mac Pro? But at least now they won’t have to worry that a new Mac Pro will come out a few days or weeks after they pull the trigger on their iMac purchase.

To find out more about Apple’s Mac Pro plans—including some interesting tidbits about the company’s secretive “Pro Workflow Team”—head over to TechCrunch to read the full interview.

Your Wacom tablet won’t work with macOS High Sierra until ‘late October’

26 Sep

Apple’s newest macOS operating system, macOS High Sierra, launched today. But if you use a Wacom tablet to do your photo editing, you’ll want to hold off on hitting the upgrade button. It seems Wacom tablets won’t work with High Sierra until the end of October.

The disappointing news was broadcast in a tweet published by the main Wacom Twitter account that read, “We will release a Driver update late October for 10.13 High Sierra. The current driver is not compatible.” If you click on the more info link offered in that tweet, you get this slightly more detailed explanation:

Apple has announced 10.13 High Sierra will be released September 25th. Wacom is currently working on a new driver update to support the new operating system. The new Wacom driver will be ready by late October at the latest. Due to nature of the changes in High Sierra, the existing Wacom driver for 10.12 will not work. To continue to use your tablet uninterrupted, Wacom suggests not to upgrade to 10.13 until the new driver is released.

The news is particularly disappointing given that Apple announced High Sierra months ago, and gave developers access to that beta the very same day. And based on the wording of the announcement, the old driver won’t work at all, so upgrading to macOS High Sierra will leave you Wacom-less for at least a couple of weeks—if you rely on a Wacom tablet for your work, you’ll just have to wait.

Keep an eye on this link to know the instant Wacom releases their overdue macOS High Sierra driver.

Hasselblad X1D-50c shipments delayed until September 15

31 Aug

Shipment of the Hasselblad X1D-50C has been delayed for a couple of weeks, according to a listing on B&H Photo. The retailer’s product page now shows a shipment start date of September 15, two weeks later than the previously given August 30 date.

Hasselblad’s 100MP H6D has also missed its target ship date, though by a much greater margin: announced in April, it’s currently listed as unavailable at B&H. Hasselblad announced a trade-up deal for those waiting for the H6D-100c; customers can purchase a 50MP H6D-50c and only pay the difference to trade up for the 100MP back when the H6D-100c becomes available. Earthquake damage to Sony Japan’s sensor facilities has been cited as the root cause of that delay.

Sony delays 70-200mm GM lens until September

30 Jun

Sony has said that the FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS lens for its E-mount cameras is to be delayed until September. When the lens was announced in February this year the company expected to be delivering the tele-zoom to stores this month. No reason is given for the delay, but the statement thanks users for their patronage and apologies for the inconvenience.

Along with the zoom the company will also push back the release of the two tele-converters that are supposed to go with it – the SEL14TC 1.4x converter and the SEL20TC 2x converter.

The FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS is part of a new G Master range of lenses designed with the company’s full frame a7 series of cameras in mind – though they are also compatible with the APS-C models. Other GM lenses announced along with the 70-200mm F2.8 are the FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM and the FE 85mm F1.4 GM.

For more information see the Sony website.

Hasselblad drops 15% on lens prices until the end of March

16 Mar

Swedish medium-format camera manufacturer Hasselblad has announced it is dropping the price of all its H series lenses until the 31st March. The discount applies to all HC and HCD lenses, and gives buyers 15% off the usual prices.

The HC and HCD ranges include fixed and zoom lenses designed to be used on the Hasselblad H cameras, including the current H5D 50c Wi-Fi but also going back to the H1 film body. The savings mean the 35-90mm F4-5.6 HCD Aspherical zoom, which is the most expensive of the range will cost $ 6936 instead of $ 8160 – a discount of $ 1224 – while the standard 80mm F2.8 HC lens drops by $ 445.50, from $ 2970 to $ 2524.50.

It is hard to tell whether the offer really will finish at the end of the month as Hasselblad has a habit of announcing short-term discounts that then become the standard price. The new CEO Perry Oosting said recently that price is definitely an issue for the company and that introducing lower costs to ownership, such as the Christmas discount on the H5D 50c Wi-Fi, brings new customers to the brand.

For more information about the company’s lenses and to find a retailer visit the Hasselblad website.
