A kaleidoscopic space filled with reflected and refracted light in all shades of the rainbow makes you feel like you’ve somehow immersed yourself inside a crystal at the DMMPLANETS exhibition in Odaiba, Tokyo. Dreamed up by the art collective teamLab, ‘Wander through the Crystal Universe’ is one of three major interactive installations in place through the end of August for the inaugural show. The work uses accumulated light points to create a sculptural body, “similar to the way distinct dots of color form an image in a pointillist painting.”

As you walk through the three-dimensional light space, your movement affects the light particles, creating changes in the installation. Each person’s action or change affects the way everyone present experiences the space. The lights are constantly moving and shimmering, going dark to mimic the effect of floating in space and then shifting into new color palettes. Visitors can further interact with the exhibit using their smartphones, selecting certain elements and enhancing them.

“In Crystal Universe, the particles of light are digitally controlled, and change based on the viewer’s interactivity with the work. The result is an installation consisting of an accumulation of lights, forming a sculpture that expresses the universe.”

Equally enchanting is ‘Drawing on the Water Surface Created by the Dance of Koi and People – Infinity.’ In this case, visitors are walking into a pool of water, influencing the movement of projected koi.

“When the fish collide with people they turn into flowers and scatter. The trajectory of the koi is determined by the presence of people and these trajectories trace lines on the surface of the water. The work is rendered in real time by a computer program, it is neither a pre-recorded animation nor on loop. The interaction between the viewer and the installation causes continuous change in the artwork. Previous visual states can never be replicated, and will never reoccur.”

7 Crazy Theories About Life, The Universe & Everything

Mind Blowing Theories Universe main

Our universe is located inside the black hole of another universe – or it’s just a holographic projection – or it’s all one big computer game being played by bored super-intelligent aliens. Or not. These scientific and philosophical theories about the origin and nature of existence can be major head-scratchers, but there are at least a handful of physicists around the world who support each one.

Multiverse Theory: We All Have a Doppelganger

Mind Blowing Theories Multiverse Doppelgangers

(image via: kevin dooley)

It’s highly unlikely that we live in the sole existing universe. We’re probably in one of many. Physicists have theorized that there could be infinite universes existing next to each other in a sort of giant patchwork quilt, that the Big Bang led to the generation of many other ‘bubble universes’ and that parallel universes hover just outside of our own. Columbia University physicist Brian Greene, author of the book ‘The Hidden Reality: Parallel Universes and the Deep Laws of the Cosmos’ says the latter theory supports the idea that we all have doppelgangers.

“The argument for doppelgangers is pretty straightforward. Assuming that space goes on infinitely far, in any finite chunk, matter can only arrange itself in a finite number of ways, like cards in a deck. You and I are just a configuration of particles, so sooner or later we’re going to repeat. Matter can almost repeat its configuration but not repeat it identically. Your physical body may repeat, but your mental configuration can be a little bit different, so there might be an evil version of you, and a version that loves skydiving.”

Our Universe Could Be in a Black Hole

Mind Blowing Theories Universe Black Hole

(images via: wikimedia commons)

Our universe might be so small and insignificant in the grand scheme of things, that it’s hidden inside the black hole of another universe, totally unbeknownst to theoretical sentient beings in that universe. And that means all the black holes so far found in our own universe could also contain doorways to alternate realities. This theory is based on new mathematical models of the spiraling motion of matter falling into a black hole.  The matter absorbed by black holes isn’t necessarily destroyed – it could be expelled, to become the basis for new galaxies, stars, and planets. This could explain the mystery as to how the universe could have started with a singularity in the Big Bang theory – instead of just existing with no explanation, it was birthed by a white hole, the hypothetical escape hatch for matter at the other end of a black hole.

The Ekpyrotic Scenario: Universes Colliding

Mind Blowing Theories Universes Colliding

(image via: western paradigm)

Did our universe actually come about due to a collision of two three-dimensional worlds? The ekpyrotic scenario is a cosmological model of the origin and shape of the universe that illustrates it as a giant, stretched rubber band that could fly back into our faces at any moment. It contradicts the Big Bang theory, in which time and space began when something created a bubble of energy from nothing – a bubble that blew up into what we now know as the universe in a tiny fraction of a millisecond. Based on string theory (which suggests that once you get smaller than an atom, everything is a 2D unit called a quantum string – an attempt to marry Einstein’s theory of relativity with quantum physics), it’s highly controversial, but intriguing all the same.

In the ekpyrotic scenario, two three-dimensional worlds (branes) collide in a space with an extra (fourth) spatial dimension. It amends the earliest point of the Big Bang theory, stating that rather than beginning with nearly infinite temperature and density, the universe began cold and nearly vacuous.

“The hot expanding universe we know came as a result of a collision that brought the universe up to a large but finite temperature and density,” says Paul Steinhardt of Princeton University, who came up with the concept. “The rest of the story is as the Big Bang model would have it, but the beginning is different.”

“Quantum effects cause the incoming three-dimensional world to ripple along the extra-dimension prior to collision so that the collision occurs in some places at slightly different times than others. By the time the collision is complete, the rippling leads to small variations in temperature, which seed temperature fluctuations in the microwave background and the formation of galaxies. We have shown that the spectrum of energy density fluctuations is scale-invariant (the same amplitude on all scales). The production of a scale-invariant spectrum from hyperexpansion was one of the great triumphs of inflationary theory, and here we have repeated the feat using completely different physics.”

Classic Game Room HD – MORTAL KOMBAT vs DC UNIVERSE review 2

25 Dec

Part 2 of 2. Watch in High Definition. Classic Game Room reviews MORTAL KOMBAT vs DC UNIVERSE for the Xbox 360 video game console, MK vs DC is also available for Sony Playstation 3 PS3. This Mortal Kombal vs DC Universe review features gameplay footage from the game in HD. This is an awesome fighting 3D fighting game, no way around it. From Midway, Warner Bros. and DC Comics comes this bizarre yet enjoyable combination of the Mortal Kombat franchise and the DC comic book characters like Superman, Batman, Lex Luther, Wonder Woman, Flash, Green Lantern and Catwoman. The Mortal Kombat characters that you know and love are here for mortal combat including Raiden, Sonya Blade, Jax, Scorpion, Sub Zero and Liu Chang. Which universe will you choose to fight in? That’s the beauty of this game, fight a parallel storyline with one of two opposing sides. The writing in this game is campy, impossible and awesome. Fatality moves for Mortal Kombat and DC characters are in the game, and although the violence has been toned down a bit with DC Heroic Brutality (seriously??), the Fatality moves are fun to watch and nicely rendered in 3D animation. In many ways this is a superior game, Mortal Kombat vs. Soul Calibur IV or Virtua Fighter 5… who wins? CGRHD likes this game better, short and easy to memorize button combos, great gameplay and that awesome mixture of DC and MK characters. One of the better fighting games out there for the 360 and PS3. Classic Game Room HD reviews new games with

The Urban Planning Council of Abu Dhabi (UPC) appointed Squint Opera to create a short film illustrating their grand Urban Planning Guide for Abu Dhabi. The film is presented at Cityscape Abu Dhabi from the 13th to the 15th of May 2008. The film communicates the principles and visualises the UPC plans for the expansion of the city to attract investors, developers and architects. The UPC commissioned this film as an awe-inspiring vision demonstrating the scale, ambition and radical nature of the plan. Alice Scott directed the six-minute film that describes the plan on 3D, bringing life to certain aspects of the unique environment and a future evolving culture. Through 4 main key themes (Green — Live — Work — Connect) we are shown pedestrians walking the shaded sidewalks, using the world-class metro system and trams surrounded by green, energy saving residential townhouses, villas, high rises, offices and retail developments. The imagery shows desert landscaping, renewable energy measures and water-cooling canals in the streets of Abu Dhabi and demonstrates a efficient quality of life for the future population.
