Phottix replaces Para-Pro lineup with new Premio Parabolic Umbrellas

Phottix has just launched its new Premio Parabolic Umbrellas series, a replacement for its previous Para-Pro product lineup. The Premio series boasts an entirely new locking mechanism that is both simpler and stronger than the version found on the Para-Pro models, as well as deeper umbrellas and fiberglass spokes.

In all, there are eight versions of the Premio umbrellas you can put together: 47in / 120cm and 33in / 85cm umbrellas can be purchased in either ‘shoot-through’ or ‘reflective’ models, with reflective black backing available for the shoot-through models (2 stops of additional light) and white diffusers available for the reflective models.

All four models, plus reflective backing and diffusers, are available now at the following prices:

  • 85cm Reflective Umbrella: $ 45
  • 120cm Reflective Umbrella: $ 55
  • 85cm Shoot-through Umbrella: $ 40
  • 120cm Shoot-through Umbrella: $ 50
  • 85cm White diffuser: $ 15
  • 120cm White diffuser: $ 25
  • 85cm Black backing: $ 15
  • 120cm Black backing: $ 25

Elinchrom launches improved Deep Umbrellas

Elinchrom has introduced its new Deep Umbrellas line of affordable umbrellas to replace the Varistar series. The new models are available in white, silver and translucent and feature a deep shape that provides an even quality of light. 16 fiberglass rods are utilized to maintain a consistent circular shape. The umbrellas include a portable sleeve and are available in sizes of 41” or 49”. 

In addition to the new umbrellas, Elinchrom has also introduced a range of compatible diffusers and reflectors that can convert the umbrella into a “fold-up” softbox, giving photographers another lighting tool without adding hardly any extra bulk. Pricing for the umbrellas ranges, depending on color and size, from $ 96.95 to $ 136.95. Diffusors start at $ 32.95. More information on specifications and features is available on Elinchromus.com.

Geodesic Housing for the Homeless: Dome Made of Umbrellas

Could a low-cost, lightweight geodesic dome made from umbrellas, garbage bags and a space blanket provide a real life-saving solution for people forced to sleep on the streets? ‘Earth Lander’ reclaims common materials in totally unexpected ways for a visual result that looks just as its name suggests, and it’s thermally efficient, providing a warm space that’s also resistant to water and wind.

Umbrella frames were altered to make them more structurally secure, and combined with waterproof umbrella fabric to create the outer structure. Air-filled garbage bags, cellulose wool and a space blanket provide insulation.

The umbrellas were assembled to create a geodesic dome that Bucky Fuller would be proud of. The transparent trash bags act as inflatable windows so the inhabitant can peer outside, and the octagonal door is secured with ties.

It’s an intriguing idea that could help save the lives of countless homeless people who die from exposure each year during the harsh winter months, and keep them dry in other seasons. Umbrellas versus Softboxes – Which are Best?

There are many different types of light modifiers on the market. The two most common are umbrellas and softboxes. So when might you choose each?

These videos will give you a look at the umbrella versus softbox debate and information on the difference between the two, what they do, and which one to use.

This first one by Phlearn shows a few options and talks about the relative size and distance to your subject as well.

Next up is Michael from Smoking Strobes with a video from an outdoor workshop where he talks about the pros and cons of umbrellas versus softboxes when working on location outdoors.
