Apple releases four new iPhone X mobile photography video tutorials

Apple released a new batch of mobile photography tutorial videos this week, each briefly demonstrating how to perform various camera actions using the flagship iPhone X. The OLED-equipped iPhone X features dual rear 12MP cameras coupled with optical image stabilization and optical zoom.

The four new videos were published on June 14 and guide iPhone X users through the following functions: shooting with the backlight, shooting in burst mode, recording in slow motion, and creating panoramas.

Apple semi-regularly updates video tutorials for its products, and previously released a batch of similar mobile photography instructional videos for the iPhone 8. A full playlist of Apple’s mobile photography video tutorials, including those covering older iPhone models, is available here. The four newest videos are below.

Camera Basics – Two Video Tutorials to Help You Master Your Camera Settings

Okay so you’ve got a new camera and want to learn some camera basics, these two video tutorials will give you a hand. Or perhaps you’ve been shooting for a while and want to get off Auto mode – this applies to you as well.

Camera Basics

In this first video, Peter McKinnon explains the three parts of the exposure triangle in an easy to understand format.

Understanding Exposure

Next, in this second video, Tony Northrup demonstrates the basics of exposure and how the elements of the exposure triangle work together.

One thing he explains well is how adjusting just one of the three parts of the exposure triangle doesn’t make the photo darker or brighter when using one of the auto or semi-automatic modes.

Tony encourages you to watch his demonstration and then set up a similar arrangement in your home and try the experiments yourself. This is a great way to learn so that you can really see the results of changing the various settings and understand how they work.

Video Tutorials – Portrait Posing Tips

Taking portraits is a challenging genre of photography, but add in posing and it can seem insurmountable if you’re just starting out in photography. Here are three videos I found to help you with some portrait posing tips. Practice with a friend and see tell us how it goes.

How to pose a single portrait

In this video excerpt from a Lynda.com class, you’ll see how the photographer works with a single model. She helps him get comfortable in front of the camera and create poses that are flattering to him.

How to pose (direct) couples

In this video from Mango Street, you will see how to gently direct a couple in how to pose. Giving them a few suggestions and tips and letting them fall into their own comfortable pose makes the images look more natural.

How to pose people to get rid of a double chin

Finally, in this last video, photographer Joe Edelman shows several tips for posing to flatter your subject and get rid of or minimize a double chin. Where you position the camera is also important, taking a higher position can be helpful for posing.

Video Tutorials and Tips for Shooting Blue Hour

Blue hour is a fantastic time to get out and do some night photography. Yes, you read that right – night photography is best done before it’s actually night time.

To help you out with blue hour photography here are three videos with examples and tips.

How to shoot at blue hour with filters

Ray Salisbury takes you on location at blue hour and demonstrates how he scouts a location for the best spot, finds a good composition and uses filters.

Get the timing right for blue hour

In this next video photography education guru Brian Peterson gives you tips for getting the timing just right when shooting blue hour. He’s on location in Las Vegas.

Finally, Brendan Van Son is shooting blue hour in Leiden, Netherlands. In this video, you can see how the length of blue hour varies greatly depending on your geographic location.

The farther away from the equator you are, the long blue hour will last. Where I live it’s usually about an hour, so it’s frustrating for me that it’s so quick in more tropical locations I like to visit. So you really have to plan ahead and be prepared when that is the case.

Video Tutorials – Tips for Better Street Photography

Street photography is a great way to get out taking pictures, even in your own city. There is always something interesting you can find doing this kind of photography. Here are some videos to help you out with your street photography and taking better photos.

In this video, Josh Katz gives some very practical tips on doing street photography including camera settings, and how to find good subjects. Even if you’re not new to street photography there are some good nuggets in here – give it a watch.

10 Simple Street Photography Tips

Here is a video from a photographer from Mumbai, India. You’ll see that his images may be more exotic than your locale, but the 10 tips are applicable wherever you live.

Now it’s your turn to get out there and do some shooting. Both videos mentioned the same tip – that photography is about experimenting, trying things and just doing it.

This week on dPS we published our 7,000th post here on the Digital Photography School blog.

I started this site back in April 2006 because my friends – who had all just bought new DSLRs – kept asking me the same questions about how to use their new gear to its potential.

Instead of answering them one by one I decided to write down my answers on a blog – not really knowing that 11 years later I’d have created a resource that:

  • employs a team of writers, editors, developers, producers, customer service reps, marketers from around the world
  • has millions of social media followers on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest

The mind boggles a little at the crazy journey we’ve had here at dPS and we’re excited about the future.

3 Photoshop Elements Tutorials to Help You Correct and Enhance Your Images

We’ve noticed on our current reader survey (if you haven’t filled it out already, please do so here) that many of you are using Photoshop Elements. So I rounded up some video tutorials to help you use Elements (15 or any older version) to help you make corrections and enhancements to your images.

#1 How to brighten and improve a dull photo

George Peirson from How To Gurus walks you through several steps you can apply to make a dull photo more exciting. He covers things like working with adjustment layers so you can work non-destructively, adding more color in certain areas, layer blending modes, and more.

#2 How to remove people using the clone stamp tool

Sometimes you can get unwanted people in your shots. In this video you can learn how to remove them using just the clone stamp tool in Photoshop Elements.

#3 How to create a motion blur effect using Elements

In this final video learn the steps to add motion to an image using different blur effects in Photoshop Elements. The example used is a race car that was frozen with a fast shutter speed.

If you use Photoshop Elements I hope these videos have helped you out, and you have learned a couple new things. Many things that you can do in Photoshop, can also be done in Elements. Some of the tools and menus are a bit different but many of the features are similar. Elements also offers a “guided” user experience to help you walk through doing some common things.

3 Video Tutorials – Portrait Retouching Tips Using Lightroom

Many of our readers use Photoshop to edits portraits, but what if all you have is Lightroom? Or you don’t know Photoshop as well? You can certainly do most of your portrait retouching using Lightroom.

Here are some video tutorials that walk you through a complete edit of one portrait from start to finish, using only Lightroom. I have also included one that I myself did too.  Every photographer has their own style, so take what works for you from each and apply that to your own editing style.

#1 Extended Lightroom Portrait Edit by Adam Lerner

Photographer Adam Lerner walks you through his portrait editing process from start to finish. He will give you some tips and tricks and great hidden gems inside Lightroom that you can use.

#2 Full Lightroom Portrait Editing by Photos in Color

Ed Gregory from Photos in Color processes a portrait using Lightroom from end to end. He makes a very different looking end result so if you’re looking for some style ideas and tips this might be a good one for you. See what he does the same and differently than Adam above, and myself below.

#3 Portrait retouching in 10 minutes using Lightroom

This is my version. Having taught Lightroom in the classroom and done portraits for over 20 years, I may have some good tips for you that you didn’t already know. I’ve been using Lightroom since the beta version 0.9 or so, and it’s my go-to image editor.

I almost never pull an image over to Photoshop unless I need to do layers for something. For portraits, that may be a head swap or something where I have to blend images. But otherwise, I pretty much use Lightroom for everything, even skin, eye and lip retouching.

PaintShop Pro launches faster brush tools, in-app guide and tutorials with version X8.1

Software provider Corel has updated its PaintShop Pro X8 image manipulation program to include more help and guidance to enable users to find their way around the tools and features of the application. A new welcome screen has been added to version X8.1 that offers links to tutorials and inspirational features, as well as to partner paid-for content from the online training site Udemy. The idea is to help photographers get more from the program by making it clear what tools are available and how they should be used.

The update also brings what Corel describes as ‘performance enhancements’ across the application, but especially faster brush speeds. The company claims nine brushes, including Paintbrush, dodge/burn and clone, are now on average twice as fast, while the Wet Paint brush is four times faster than it was previously. There are also over 100 additional enhancements that the company has made based on feedback from its user community. 

On the download page of the Corel website there is a list of ten issues that the new version addresses, including color problems with Raw files from the Nikon D810. 

Issues addressed

  • Burn Brush: Fixed edge result (previously showed darker result along brush edges)
  • Color Replacer: No color bleed when using the Round brush to fill shapes
  • Text wrapping: Left and Center alignment results fixed. Stability improved when saving layered text wrapping files to a .pspimage format compatible with legacy versions of PaintShop Pro.
  • Nikon D810: Fixed raw image color issue
  • Resize dialog box: Now retains settings last used for Based on One Side
  • Magic Move in scripts: Fixed reported issues related to accurate rendering of script commands
  • Material Properties palette: Improved stability when adding custom swatches
  • Organizer palette: Restored drag-and-drop functionality between the palette and the workspace
  • Script selection: Fixed script selection issue in the Batch Process dialog box
  • Adjust workspace: Restored ability to set Save As option once per session (dialog box does not open for each photo edited)

The update is free to download and install for current users of PaintShop Pro X8 and X8 Ultimate. Suggested retail pricing (SRP) for PaintShop Pro X8 is $ 79.99 (USD/CAN) / EUR 69.99 / £59.99 / $ 99.95 AUD. Qualifying registered users can purchase for the upgrade price of $ 59.99 (USD/CAN) / EUR 49.99 / £44.99 / $ 69.95 AUD.
