Chroma Cameras’ 679 camera system turns medium format modular

Chroma Cameras has unveiled a modular medium format camera for shooting 120 film. The new 679 camera system allows customers to custom build a camera for their specific needs.

Speaking to Kosmo Foto, Chroma Cameras founder Steve Lloyd says, ‘The Chroma 679 is a brand new, modular, medium format camera system. Like my other Chroma cameras, it’s been designed around the idea of flexibility and ‘uniqueness’, along with being an affordable, and enjoyable, way to combine existing lenses and film holders.’

The Chroma 679 system comprises four standard components. All 679 cameras use a laser cut acrylic front plate with integrated metal helicoid. The next item is a custom threaded lens board constructed using anodized aluminum. This screws into the front of the 679 helicoid to create a secure mount. There are two styles of lens board available, a standard Copal and a 0.4mm brass pinhole.

The third component is the mid-body. This is the primary body section of a constructed 679 camera. It creates a spacer to mount the lens the correct distance from the film for obtaining infinity focus and it includes a pair of cold shoes. You can use cold shoes for accessories such as a light meter or a viewfinder. The mid-body is also the mounting point for optional accessories such as a tripod mount or full grip. The final component is the film back. There are four mounts available: Kiev88, Mamiya Press, Mamiya RB Pro S and Hasselblad V Series (early version only, which allows manual winding of film without a Hasselblad body). There is also an available plain ground glass film back.

These standard components connect using a physical interlock and four ‘very strong neodymium rare-earth magnets’ in each section. Additional accessories can also be attached using integrated mounting points on each side of the mid-body. Photographers can purchase an additional cold shoe plate and a basic tripod mount to add to their 679 camera system. Further, there’s an available full grip with an integrated tripod thread, internal storage for a roll of 120 film, and a passthrough mount for a cable release. The grip is available in black and wooden printed materials for either left- or right-handed photographers.

Lloyd says that ‘Whilst it’s not the first modular medium format camera system, [the 679 system] is the first system that allows the photographer to combine large format lenses with rollfilm backs from three different manufacturers in the same camera! At the same time, the lens board used for the 679 system are the same as those used on the SnapShot, allowing the photographer to seamlessly move lenses between both systems.’ Lloyd continues to say that the 679 system is lighter than ‘even the lightest large format systems’.

The 679 system and its components can be ordered here. The front plate costs £45, the lens board is £25 (pinhole is £30), the mid-body component is £40, and the film back is £40. A ground-glass back is also available for £30. Optional components range in price from £15 to £45. The most expensive add-on is the full grip with a wood finish.

Lloyd says, ‘I designed the 679 system for photographers who want to shoot a range of formats, without having to carry large heavy systems.’ It looks to be a well-designed product and it fills a unique niche. This $95 lens attachment turns the world around you into a globe using a little glass marble

We’ve come across a number of weird lenses and lens accessories over the years, but the Soratama from Zenjix certainly stands out from the crowd, for better or worse.

The lens attachment features a 72mm filter thread and is designed to go in front of nearly any lens you can find step down/up rings for. It uses a single sheet of glass with what is effectively a clear marble to turn the world around you into a little globe of sorts.

These globe-style shots aren’t new, per se, but unlike photos that use larger glass orbs, this attachment is smaller and means your hand won’t be in the image. We can’t attest to image quality, but the above video shows what kind of shots are possible with the Soratama. There are multiple versions of the Soratama being sold on eBay, starting around $ 95 with shipping.

Frii Designs’ new Conda Strap is a camera strap that turns into a flexible mount

Frii Designs, a company known for its unconventional photography accessories, has announced a forthcoming campaign to help fund its new Conda Strap, a camera shoulder strap that also doubles as a flexible mount and grip.

Somewhere between a Joby Gorillapod and a shoulder strap, the Conda starts as a flexible shoulder strap that attaches directly to your camera via the tripod mount. When you need to use it as a tripod, simply flip the lever at the top and the Conda stiffens up for moulding into whatever shape you need.

You can even separate the strap, wrap it around objects for further security and lock it back in place with the lever engaged to ensure your gear doesn’t take any unwanted tumbles.

It’s an interesting concept and certainly carves out a niche in a market that’s fairly saturated. Due to the components required to turn it into a mounting solution, it doesn’t necessarily look like the most comfortable shoulder strap — and certainly not the lightest — but if it means you don’t have to carry around even a small tripod or mounting solution, it might be worth the compromise.

The Conda Strap will come in two versions: Conda Strap and Conda Strap Plus. The Conda Strap is the ‘light’ version of the two, designed for mirrorless cameras and light DSLR cameras, while the Conda Strap Plus is the more heavy-duty model for larger mirrorless setups or heavier DSLRs.

The Kickstarter campaign for the Conda Strap and Conda Strap Plus will go live on November 12. Frii Designs notes the Conda Strap be available for a pledge of $ 97. We have inquired about the price of the Conda Strap Plus and will update this article accordingly when we receive a response.

If successfully funded, the first units are expected to ship out in March 2021. You can sign up to be notified as soon as the campaign goes live on Frii Designs’ website.

Video: Weird lens guru turns $20 Carl Zeiss projector lens into a swirly-bokeh camera lens

Weird lens guru Mathieu Stern is back at it with a new video that shows images captured with two $ 20 Carl Zeiss projector lenses he converted into camera lenses.

As with many of Stern’s DIY projector lens projects, both of these lenses — a 120mm F1.9 and a 105mm F1.9 — lack any way to focus and don’t have any adjustable aperture. While the adjustable aperture isn’t quite so easy to address, the video briefly shows how he uses an M65 Helicoid ring adapter to give manual focus abilities to the lens. Although not shown in the video, Stern then uses an M65 to Sony E-mount adapter to use the custom lens to his Sony camera.

The resulting imagery captured with the lenses produces pronounced ‘swirly’ bokeh and gives a very sharp separation between the subject and the background. It’s not going to win any resolution or edge-to-edge sharpness contests, but considering you can pick up similar projector lenses for around $ 20 or so online and a set of adapters for your camera for roughly $ 50 or so, it’s a cheap way to get some unique shots.

Sony’s Imaging Edge Webcam utility turns 35 of its camera into webcams on Windows 10

It might be one of the last manufacturers to the party, but Sony has just released its Imaging Edge Webcam utility, making it possible to use select Sony cameras as webcams with compatible livestreaming and video conferencing programs.

Similar to webcam utilities for other companies, Sony’s Imaging Edge Webcam utility is only available for Windows 10 computers, for now. We’ve inquired with Sony about a macOS version and will update with more information when we have it.

The utility is free to download on Sony’s website. Simply select the camera you intend to use the program with and click the download link. Sony has also provided a thorough guide on how to install the utility and set your camera up for use.

A mysterious firmware update turns the Viltrox 85mm F1.8 lens into an even faster F1.6 prime

The $ 400 Viltrox 85mm F1.8 lens is a popular choice for Sony E and Fujifilm X users due to its compelling blend of performance and value. Owners have remarked that the lens delivers sharp image quality even when shot wide open. It now appears that wide open can be made even wider with a firmware update allowing the lens to become an F1.6 prime.

Photographer Stefan Malloch has published a video tutorial, seen below, which shows how to use the USB port on the lens to update the lens. This update allows the lens to open its aperture wider, changing the maximum aperture from F1.8 to F1.6. With a simple firmware update, you can get an extra one-third of a stop of light gathering capability.

As PetaPixel notes, there are conflicting reports as to the origin of the firmware. Sony Addict reported that the firmware was released officially in China. FujiRumors, on the other hand, reached out to Viltrox and was told that firmware to turn the F1.8 lens into an F1.6 lens had not been released. All this is to say that installing (possibly unofficial) firmware into your lens is a risk with unknown consequences.

Supposing you still want to update your lens using Malloch’s video above, what can you expect from the Viltrox 85mm F1.6 lens? Malloch also published an overview video of the lens, including sample images.

As mentioned earlier, the Viltrox 85mm F1.8 (or F1.6) lens is available as a full-frame lens for Sony E mount or for the APS-C Fujifilm X system. The fast, autofocus-capable prime lens can focus as closely as 2.62′ (0.8m). The lens includes 10 elements across 7 groups, including 1 ED lens element and 4 ‘short-wavelength and high-transparency’ lens elements. The lens has a 72mm filter thread and weighs 636g (1.4 lbs.). L16 camera manufacturer Light abandons consumer imaging, turns to automotive

In 2015 a start-up called Light announced a product that appeared have the potential to revolutionize photography. The Light L16 was a portable camera that, according to the company, provided ‘excellent low-light performance and DSLR-like image quality’. However, now it looks like Light has abandoned the consumer imaging market altogether and is instead focusing on the automotive sector.

The L16 offered focal lengths between 35mm and 150mm, 4K video recording, and depth-mapping technology to adjust a photo’s depth of field and focus after it has been captured. Instead of a conventional camera/lens setup it used 16 separate cameras across its front and computational imaging methods the combine the data captured by all sensors into a single output image.

When the camera finally started shipping in July 2017, after some delays and a $ 30M funding round, the camera’s performance was underwhelming, though, resulting in lukewarm reviews and presumably lower than expected sales figures.

Instead of working on an improved follow-up model Light turned its attention to the mobile market, announcing partnerships with smartphone makers Sony and Xiaomi. Given the Light technology’s limited space requirements and ability to fit into a flat smartphone body this seemed like a logical next move.

It followed a $ 121M funding round led by the SoftBank Vision Fund that also included German camera makers Leica, and the news that Nokia was going to be the first smartphone brand to launch a Light camera-equipped device. The Nokia 9 PureView was launched in February 2019 and featured a circular penta-camera setup on its back.

The five Zeiss-branded lenses all came with an equivalent focal length of 28mm, an F1.8 aperture and were placed in front of 12MP image sensors, three of which were monochrome and two RGB. In addition, there was a dedicated depth sensor.

Much like the L16, the 9 PureView camera could not convince the testers, though, with more conventional camera setups in the flagship phones from rivals Apple, Samsung or Huawei delivering better results across the board.

Now it looks very much like the Nokia 9 PureView was the first and last smartphone with Light camera technology as the company has told Android Authority in a statement that it is ‘no longer operating in the smartphone industry.’

On the Light website there are no traces of smartphone or consumer camera technology to be found anymore. Instead, a statement on the About page says ‘Light is a depth-sensing and perception technology company focused on providing automobiles with the ability to see like humans.’

The company is now focusing on the automotive sector.

Demand for camera technology in the automotive sector has been rising quickly and with autonomous vehicles being on the brink of mass production the potential for growth seems almost unlimited. If Light’s venture into automotive will be more successful than the company’s beginnings in consumer, imaging investors could finally see a return.

This said, despite the lack of success in the marketplace, both the Light L16 camera and Nokia 9 PureView smartphone will always be remembered as innovative imaging devices and secure their place in tech history.

A student designed a package for ilford 120 rollfilm, that can be folded into a pinhole camera for said film.  Supercool, although it wasn’t clear whether this was an actual product or just a design concept.  Check the link for more images and info on the project.

Lucid’s new LucidPix AI app turns ordinary images into 3D photos

AI vision startup Lucid has introduced an upcoming app called LucidPix that transforms ordinary images into 3D photos. The app is currently in development but has been made available to some users as part of a private beta. LucidPix is made possible using a contextual artificial intelligence that replaces the need for depth of field sensors or multiple cameras.

Generally speaking, special high-end camera hardware including select expensive flagship smartphones are required to capture 3D images. Unlike old school red-cyan stereoscopic 3D images, this newer type of 3D image doesn’t require special glasses to view. Instead, the effect is generated in the image based on depth-of-field data. Users can perceive the depth of different elements in the images by tilting their phones while viewing them, giving the images a 3D effect.

The LucidPix app will make it possible for anyone to create 3D photos, including ones generated from existing 2D images, using any iPhone or Android smartphone model. The transformation happens entirely through software. The LucidPix app includes 3D effect frames and will be offered in both standard and for-pay Premium versions.

3D photos generated with LucidPix can be shared within the photo app, as well as on social media platforms that support 3D images, including Facebook. According to Lucid, more than 250,000 people are using the LucidPix beta app through the Google Play Store’s early access program. Lucid recently demonstrated the app at CES 2020; the product will officially launch in the second quarter of the year.

Diveroid housing turns your smartphone into a dive computer and underwater camera

A Kickstarter campaign has already gathered over ten times is funding goal for a campaign that aims to produce a smartphone dive camera system that uses your smartphone to take pictures as well as display live data about the dive itself.

Diveroid is an underwater housing kit that comes with a mini dive computer and a app that turn the users smartphone into an underwater camera while using the phones screen to display dive information and maintain a log of the dive. The housing accepts multiple models of smartphone and uses a set of three physical buttons to control the phone. The app connects to the mini dive monitor and the smartphone and displays depth, time and temperature information as well as guiding the diver around precautions such as avoid decompression.

The app takes over the phone’s camera function and offers ultra-wide-angle, wide-angle, zoom and selfie shooting modes, as well as options to record video. A red-filter effect can also be applied in the app to offer real-time preview and recording that compensates for the loss of red at certain depths.

The housing is said to be good for depths of 60m and keeps a track of your dive so it can tell you at what depths each picture was taken. Images can be overlaid with data graphs and the whole dive can be shared as a logbook through the app. When you need to summon a boat the app can send a text message with your exact location.
