Under London: Disused Tunnel Now a Subterranean Skate Park

The infamous Old Vic Tunnels under London’s Waterloo Station are now home to the city’s first subterranean skate park with the opening of House of Vans, a cultural complex taking up the entire 32,000-square-foot space. In addition to the pool-style bowl, street section and mini-ramp for skaters, the space will offer a music venue, cafe, bar, cinema, artist studios and gallery space.

The four massive tunnels were the subject of a bidding war once the Old Vic Theather vacated the underground space, with Vans reportedly beating out Apple and Nike. The skate park is a fitting usage for it, located adjacent to London’s largest legal graffiti wall and another skate park on the Thames River.

The smooth new concrete surfaces and black-and-white checkered floors contrast with the centuries-old weathered brick surfaces of the original tunnels, which are still under control of England’s Department of Transport. Before it was taken over by Old Vic, the disused tunnel played host to the premiere of Banksy’s movie Exit Through the Gift Shop.

Skate sessions are free, but must be reserved in advance, with time slots getting snapped up as much as a month ahead of time. Artists selected to utilize the studios for free get the opportunity to display their work in the gallery space at the end of their tenancy.

Travel Through Trees: Root-Like Wooden Tunnel Installation

You may have to crouch a little to take a journey through this system of tunnels, but it’s worth it to feel as if you’re traveling through the roots of an enormous tree. Artist Henrique Oliveira has transformed a bare white gallery space at the Museu de Arte Contemporânea da Universidade in São Paulo with a cavernous installation that looks as if nature has taken over.

‘Transarquitetônica‘ fuses real tree branches with tunnels made from reclaimed scrap wood to create an interconnected organic mass that visitors can actually walk through. The wood is an inexpensive temporary siding , known as tapumes, which is often used to obscure construction sites and then discarded.

“It’s wood that has been taken from nature, has been cut down into geometric structures, and they have been used by society and discharged,” says Oliveira. “And I take it back and I rebuild the forms there again, creating true nature forms. It’s bringing back the tree aspects to the material. It’s not just an object, it’s an experience.”

Oliveira’s largest installation to date, ‘Transarquitetônica’ grew from the artist’s original vision because the space provided by the gallery was so vast. The installation will be on display through the end of November.

Reactive Light Sculpture Illuminates a Tunnel + Your Mind

Tunnels are typically scary places. The darkness is enough to give anyone the willies – and then there are the spooky, disorienting echoes. An example of an un-scary tunnel would be Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport’s Light Tunnel. Another can be found in the Netherlands.

The Dutmala tunnel in Eindhoven was once cast in darkness. Amsterdam-based designers Knol Ontwerp illuminated the once-dim tunnel with a light sculpture called Transit Mantra. The interactive corridor reacts to the movement of passersby, a glowing escort through a formerly-gloomy tunnel.

Each person who passes through the tunnel gets his or her own unique experience, as the sculpture produces both light and sound. The amount of walkers, bikers or joggers, as well as their speed, causes fluctuations in the patterns. Now every tunnel, underpass, aqueduct – even the Chunnel – seem boring.

Mountaintop Museum: Underground Rooms Tunnel into Peak

In a bold yet beautifully contextually move, this embedded mountaintop museum structure is part of a series of buildings set high in the mountains of Tyrol, Italy, and designed by Zaha Hadid Architects.

Visitors ascend the slope from below, enter a glazed above-ground space, then pass through subterranean exhibit rooms and come out onto an observation deck with stunning views down the steep sides of the mountain below.

The sixth of the set, Messner Mountain Museum is situated at the peak of Mount Kronplatz above a regional ski resort. It is designed to educate visitors on the discipline of mountaineering and celebrate the world’s greatest rock faces.

Aside from its sinuous aesthetic, the strength of this design relies on sequential experience – movement through the building provides an appreciation for both the site and the subject matter of the museum. It works, quite literally, on a number of levels.

From the architects: “A composition of fluid, interconnected volumes, the 1000 sq. m. MMM Corones design is carved within the mountain and informed by the geology and topography of its context. A sharp glass canopy, like a fragment of glacial ice, rises from the rock to mark and protect the museum’s entrance”

Abandoned Tunnel Used for Secret Race Car Testing

Locals in the area of Donegal, Pennsylvania would often scratch their heads at the reverberating sounds of roaring car engines and squealing tires seeming to come from beneath a nearby mountain in 2003. Hidden just under a layer of earth and trees was the Laurel Hill Tunnel, a former part of the state turnpike system, but it had lain abandoned since 1964. Then, people started seeing NASCAR haulers, equipment and supplies coming through the area. Was there a connection?

Sure enough, there are cars tearing through that tunnel at top speeds, but it isn’t some kind of secret underground theme park for race car drivers. It’s a test site for the study of aerodynamics. Hikers investigating the site found that the tunnel has a new, tubular steel entrance with dual garage openings, and discovered discarded barrels of motor racing fuel of the sort used by NASCAR. But for years, the suspected users of the site wouldn’t acknowledge its existence.

Only in recent months has the Chip Ganassi Racing team been willing to confirm the rumors that have been swirling since 2004, and explained a little more about the purpose of the tunnel. Team leader Ben Bowlby told Racecar Engineering Magazine that the tunnel happens to be an ideal place for IRL (Indy Racing League) testing in a straight line in a wind tunnel, with total control over wind resistance and other environmental factors, using a full-sized racing car. The car zooms through the tunnel at a set speed and the wind forces are measured.

This straight-line testing has been considered a key to success in the Indy Racing League since track testing was banned in 2004. The facility includes a 460 meter (1509-foot) acceleration zone, with a total length of 1384 meters (4,541 feet.) While the tunnel has provided a virtually ideal environment for testing, it hasn’t been without its snags: there have been several crashes. Here’s a shot at editing footage in iMovie shot with a Sony Bloggie 3D. If you watch this on a computer, you should use anaglyph (red/blue) 3D glasses. If you watch it on YouTube through and HD 3D TV, use whatever format glasses your TV requires. As you can see, I haven’t figured out how to do titles in iMovie that work with the rest of the 3D duo image.
