The iPhone 11 Pro Features a New Triple Lens and Night Mode

Apple has just announced three new iPhones: the iPhone 11, the iPhone 11 Pro, and the iPhone 11 Pro Max.

And, as usual, these iPhones come with new cameras and new camera technology.

But will these new smartphones be enticing for photographers? And if you’re looking to purchase a new smartphone, should you grab an iPhone 11 Pro?

Read on to find out.

The iPhone 11 Pro Camera

First things first:

While Apple has announced three new iPhones, the iPhone 11 Pro and the iPhone 11 Max are basically identical, save for the screen size. Hence, both the 11 Pro and the 11 Pro Max have the same camera specs:

Three cameras.

An improved front-facing camera.

Deep Fusion technology.

Let’s take a closer look:

iPhone 11 Pro: a three-camera setup

The three-camera design is Apple’s first foray beyond their (now standard) 2-camera setup. The iPhone 11 Pro boasts a telephoto lens (52mm equivalent), a wide-angle lens (26mm equivalent), and an ultra-wide-angle lens (13mm equivalent). The new camera (the ultra-wide-angle) should make it possible to capture sweeping landscape shots, or simply to gain a wider field of view when doing group portraits and event photography.

While the wide and telephoto lenses incorporate optical image stabilization, the ultra-wide-angle lens does not. This shouldn’t be a huge problem, because camera shake is less apparent in wider lenses. But it’s nice to have a bit of image stabilization, especially for night shots.

And speaking of night photography:

Apple has finally added a Night Mode to the smartphone camera lineup. This will supposedly increase detail in night photos, making it possible to produce less noisy images in near darkness. Given the poor performance of iPhones at night, this is a feature that Apple phones have sorely needed.

Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait and see whether the iPhone 11 Pro’s regular shooting mode will have improved low light capabilities. I’m not holding my breath, however. The iPhone XS’s low light performance is dismal in low light compared to competitors such as the Google Pixel 3, and there are no indications of a significantly improved sensor on the iPhone 11 Pro.

While the iPhone 11 Pro rear cameras all sit at 12 megapixels, the front-facing camera will see an upgrade from 8 megapixels (in the XS) to 12 megapixels. The lens has also been widened. I don’t recommend using the front-facing camera for serious photography, but it’ll be nice to take some higher resolution selfies and wider selfie-group shots.

The iPhone 11

The iPhone 11 is the successor to Apple’s cheaper iPhone XR.

Fortunately, it offers a notable camera upgrade: from a single wide-angle lens, the iPhone 11 now features both a wide-angle and ultra-wide-angle lens setup.

It also includes Night Mode, which will make shooting in low light (hopefully) easier.

Deep Fusion technology

The most intriguing aspect of the new iPhone cameras is the promise of a Deep Fusion technology. This should work on all the new iPhones, including the iPhone 11.

While this feature won’t be rolled out until after the iPhones are released (in a software update), Apple claims that this new technology will allow your iPhone to capture nine images at once, process them, and create a final image that’s optimized for detail, noise, and dynamic range.

If the feature is as impressive as Apple claims, then we have a lot to look forward to.

The iPhone 11 Pro: Should you purchase it?

If you’re a serious smartphone photographer, you’re going to want the iPhone 11 Pro over the iPhone 11. No question. It offers the additional telephoto camera, which you’ll appreciate if you ever want to shoot portraits or street photos.

But how does the iPhone 11 Pro stack up against its competition?

Personally, I would wait to grab the iPhone 11 Pro until you see what Google comes out with this fall. The iPhone 11 Pro, with its triple cameras and promise of Deep Fusion technology, is appealing. But Apple is currently behind Google in terms of low-light capabilities. And you don’t want to buy a new smartphone, only to wish you had waited just a bit longer for the Pixel 4.

The iPhone 11, the iPhone 11 Pro, and the iPhone 11 Pro Max are available for preorder starting this Friday, September 13th.

Canon patent details triple image stabilization system for low-light video recording

Canon has patented a new image stabilization system that utilizes three different technologies to prevent blurry images: lens stabilization, image sensor stabilization and electronic image stabilization. The system would add another layer of movement prevention over Canon’s existing dual image stabilization option that uses both lens and digital stabilization when shooting in video mode.

The patent was first posted on the United States Patent and Trademark Office’s website (USPTO) on June 27. According to the document, Canon’s triple image stabilization system, which uses a combination of lens, sensor and electronic image stabilization technologies, kicks in to prevent slow shutter speed blurs that may otherwise exceed the capabilities of the current Dual IS system.

Canon splits camera shakes into two different categories: low-frequency for slight movements that can be corrected using electronic stabilization and high-frequency for stronger shakes like the vibration from a moving vehicle that can be corrected using optical stabilization.

The patent details a third type of movement Canon called ’accumulated shake’ resulting from low shutter speeds experienced in dim environments. In the case of recording in low-light situations, Canon explains:

…so-called ‘accumulated shake’ may occur, which is a blur occurring in a subject image due to the position at which an optical image is formed being displaced during exposure, and therefore, it may be impossible to acquire a favorable image even if a region that is to be cut out is adjusted.

It appears Canon patented this new system as a potential solution for this problem; the patent explains the system offers ‘favorable shake correction corresponding to the shutter speed.’ Based on the details provided in the patent, Canon may envision future cameras that utilize a detection method for determining when accumulated shake is a problem in order to utilize the triple image stabilization system.

The feature may be used to reduce blurs in videos recorded in low-light settings, but only speculation about Canon’s intentions is possible at this time. As with any patent, Canon may never bring this technology to the consumer market.

The FAA predicts the commercial drone market could triple in size by 2023

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) recently released its two-decade Aerospace Forecast for fiscal years 2019-2039. While they’ve successfully predicted steady growth in the drone industry over the past five years, this latest annual update reveals that they’ve underestimated the phenomenal rate of adoption for unmanned aerial vehicles.

‘A comparison of last year’s data with this year’s (2018) shows that the annual growth rate to be around 13 percent,’ reads the report. ‘This continues to be substantial growth as anticipated from the introduction of drones as a recreation activity facilitated by falling equipment prices and improved technology, such as built-in cameras and relatively easy maneuvering.’

Last year, predictions put roughly 452,000 commercial (non-model) drones in the sky by 2022. Now it appears that the industry will reach that landmark around the beginning of next year. According to the latest data collected, if trends continue, the FAA foresees market growth tripling in size over the next five years, topping off at 835,000 drones by 2023 – an average annual growth rate of 24.7 percent.

The FAA has registered more than 116,000 remote pilots through the end of 2018. Officials expect that number to reach roughly 350,000 pilots with Part 107 certification by 2023.

Despite the significant growth, the FAA acknowledged that as with all technologies, model aircraft (non-commercial drone) sales will inevitably slow as ‘the pace of falling prices diminishes and the early adopters begin to experience limits in their experiments or simply eagerness plateaus.’

Since the FAA’s online registration system went into effect on Dec. 21, 2015, more than 900,000 owners have registered their drones through September 2018. The agency estimates 1.25 million drones are currently in use across the U.S. with growth projected to reach 1.4 million by 2023. Monthly owner registration for model aircraft averaged around 8,000 – 9,000 per month from January – December, 2018. The overall pace of registration has decreased to about half compared to the same period the year before.

As the commercial industry continues to grow, new sectors and uses for drone technology will continue to emerge. Google’s Wing recently received permission to deliver small commercial goods to consumers, a first for the FAA to grant any company. A kidney was transported, via drone, to a transplant patient this past week.

OnePlus shares official sample images from OnePlus 7 Pro’s triple camera system

On May 14, Chinese smartphone company OnePlus will officially announce the anticipated OnePlus 7 Pro Android smartphone. Though many details are lacking at this time, the OnePlus 7 Pro previously leaked as featuring a rear three-camera system, something OnePlus confirmed on April 25, 2019. Following that confirmation, OnePlus has shared three official sample images captured with the the triple camera.

OnePlus shared three images captured with the OnePlus 7 Pro via Twitter on April 30. Though the company didn’t provide details on the device, the images seemingly confirm leaks that claim the model will feature both ultra-wide and zoom cameras in addition to the expected 48MP primary camera.

The OnePlus 7 Pro will allegedly feature a Snapdragon 855, 8GB of RAM, USB-C, a single speaker, notch-free display, and complete lack of a headphone jack. Official features will be revealed by OnePlus next month.

Xiaomi launches Mi 9 smartphone with triple camera, up to 8GB of RAM

We are getting close to the start of the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, which means we should see a number of high-profile mobile device launches over the coming days. Today Chinese manufacturer Xiaomi has thrown the first punch by launching its new Mi 9 flagship smartphone and, at least on paper, the new Xiaomi looks like an enticing option for smartphone photographers.

The Mi 9’s triple-cam setup is built around an 48MP Sony IMX586 1/2″ sensor which comes with a quad-bayer filter and produces 12MP image output. The lens offers an F1.75 aperture and 26mm equivalent focal length.

The primary module is joined by an ultra-wide-angle with 17mm equivalent focal length and F2.2 aperture. It uses a 16MP 1/3″ Sony IMX481 sensor. The tele offers a 2x magnification for a 50mm equivalent focal length and captures image information on a 12MP 1/3.4″ Samsung S5K3M5 sensor with 1.0µm pixels and a F2.2 aperture.

A combination of PDAF and laser is used for focusing and for very dim conditions a LED flash is on board. By default the Mi 9 records 4K video at 30 frames per second but the frame rate can be increased to 60 fps.

Images can be viewed and edited on a 6.39″ AMOLED display with 1080p+ resolution and hidden in a display notch you’ll find the 20MP front camera with F2.0 aperture which in some regions will use artificial intelligence to power a face-unlock function.

An in-display fingerprint reader and fast charging for the 3,300mAh battery are on board as well and Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 855 chipset is paired with 6GB of RAM to power the Android operating system. Photos and videos can be stored on 64GB or 128GB of internal storage.

Pricing starts at approximately $ 455 for the 6/128GB version. The 8/128GB variant will set you back approximately $ 490. No information on exact pricing and availability outside China has been released yet.

Huawei Mate 20 Pro triple cam offers focal lengths from 16 to 80mm

Huawei launched its latest flagship smartphone Mate 20 Pro at an event in London today. Like the P20 Pro, the new device comes with a triple-camera setup on the rear but replaces the P20 Pro’s monochrome camera with a super-wide-angle unit, offering the widest range of focal lengths of all current smartphones. Using a combination of optical and digital zoom the new Huawei offers a zoom range from 16 to 270mm equiv.

The 40MP main camera is the same as on the P20 Pro and comes with large 1/1.7″ sensor, F1.8 aperture and 27mm equivalent focal length. The 8MP tele-camera features a F2.4 aperture and 80mm equivalent focal length.

The new super-wide-angle offers a 16mm equivalent focal length and uses a 20MP sensor with F2.2 aperture lens. A minimum focus distance of 2.5cm allows for better macro performance.

Very high ISO values up to 51200 allow for photography in very dark conditions and a new Super HDR mode that fuses 10 frames at Raw level offers improved dynamic range. New AI features include a Portrait Color video mode that isolates human subjects by desaturating the colors around them in real-time. Spotlight Reel identifies clips with a shared theme and auto-generates a highlight montage.

The 24MP front camera support 3D Face Unlock and can also be used for the authorization of mobile payments.

In terms of non-camera specs and features the Huawei Mate 20 Pro offers everything you would expect from a high-end smartphone in 2018. Google’s Android Pie OS is powered by a Kirin 980 chipset and 6GB of RAM. 128GB of built-in memory can be expanded via a new memory card format: Huawei’s new Nano-SD is 45% smaller than a MicroSD card.

The body offers IP86 water and dust protection and houses a 6.39-inch curved OLED display with 3120 x 1440 resolution and very thin bezels. DCI-P3 HDR is supported as well.

Huawei also launched the Mate 20 which comes with a 6.53-inch LCD display and a 12MP main camera but otherwise very similar specs to its top-end cousin. The Huawei Mate 20 Pro will be available from October 16 for approximately $ 1200 (EUR 1049). The Mate 20 is slightly more affordable at approximately $ 1040 (EUR 899).

More detail on Samsung Galaxy S10 triple camera setup revealed

Last week, Samsung revealed its latest high-end smartphone, the Galaxy Note 9. The Note 9’s camera hardware is identical to last year’s Galaxy S9 Plus dual-camera, but we’ve already seen rumors of the 2019 Galaxy S10 Plus featuring a triple-camera.

Next year’s flagship is likely to be the first smartphone to combine a super-wide-angle and a tele-lens with the primary camera. The super-wide-angle is expected to come with a 123-degree angle of view, and the tele lens with a 3x magnification, offering a wider zoom range than any other smartphone.

Today a report from South Korean publication ET News has provided more detail on the Galaxy S10 camera specifications and if the sources can be trusted all three cameras will come with a different sensor resolution. The main camera will offer a 16MP pixel count, the telephoto camera captures 13MP images and the wide angle is expected to feature a 12MP sensor.

Samsung is likely going to merge image data from all three sensors to leverage the combined sensor surface for improved light gathering, and provide a stepless zoom experience. Therefore, it’s likely that the output image size will be the same, no matter the zoom setting. That said, as usual we can’t know for sure at this point.

The ET News report contains another interesting piece of information: While Samsung initially planned to implement the triple camera only in one model of the Galaxy S10 series, the company’s plans changed and there will now be two triple-camera models. Hopefully this should increase the chances of a triple-camera model becoming available at a (halfway) affordable price point.

Huawei unveils the P20 Pro with triple camera and large 1/1.7-inch image sensor

Huawei has just unveiled its latest flagship smartphone: the P20 Pro. And just as the rumors and leaks that have been floating around the Web for weeks predicted, the new model is the first smartphone to feature a triple camera setup.

Like in previous Huawei models, the camera has been developed in cooperation with Leica, and a main RGB sensor is accompanied by a high-resolution monochrome imager that serves several purposes: it provides depth estimation for the simulated bokeh effect, improves detail and noise levels by merging multiple shots, and helps with digital zooming. New on the P20 Pro is a third, dedicated tele-camera.

That said, Huawei hasn’t just stuck a third sensor and lens onto its existing dual-camera system, the P20 Pro is more innovative than that in several ways:

  • The main camera comes with an unusually large 1/1.7-inch sensor, which is approximately twice the size of the smaller sensors in most direct competitors. At F1.8 the aperture is not the largest, but thanks to the increase in sensor surface the P20 Pro’s main sensor is still capable of capturing around 20 percent more light than most rivals.
  • The main camera sensor also features a Quad Bayer structure with a total pixel count of 40MP. It outputs data binned in 2 × 2 pixel units, resulting in 10MP image output with better detail and lower noise levels.
  • The P20 Pro’s optically-stabilized tele-camera offers 3x zoom factor—approximately a 80mm equivalent focal length—significantly longer reach than the 2x tele-modules in the iPhone X, Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus, or similar high-end devices. Huawei has been able to implement this longer reach while the 20MP monochrome is already contributing to decent zoom quality at 2x, allowing the tele to focus on 3x and larger magnifications.

Huawei claims significantly better low-light capabilities of the large main sensor, with ISO values up to 102400 allowing for usable exposures in very dim conditions. Other imaging features include phase detection and laser assistance in the AF system, predictive focus, motion detection, and a zero shutter lag for minimal delay before capture.

The rest of the specifications are worthy of a high-end device as well. The P20 Pro is powered by Huawei’s Kirin 970 chipset and 6GB of RAM, it offers a 4,000 mAh battery with quick-charge, and features 128GB of internal storage. Images can be viewed and composed on a 6.1-inch Full View display with minimal bezels.

The P20 Pro will be available in Europe from April for 900 Euros (approximately $ 1120 USD)—no information on availability in other regions has been released yet. In addition to the P20 Pro, Huawei has also launched the P20 smartphone, which is powered by the same chipset but comes with a smaller 5.8-inch screen and a more conventional dual-camera module. It will retail for 650 Euros (approximately $ 800 USD).

TriLens triple lens holder coming to Kickstarter

We’ve seen belt-mounted lens-holders before, but the TriLens from Swedish startup Frii Designs takes things to a new level. This holder lets you attach three lenses to a belt-worn device that is made of steel and fiber-reinforced nylon and can carry up to 100kg weight. 

“There’s nothing worse than coming home from a photo shoot and realize that you’ve missed irreplaceable moments because you struggled with changing lenses, or that you simply were too lazy to go through the process,” Frii Designs founder Jonas Lundin says. 

TriLens arranges three lens mounts on a triangle that rotates around its center. This way the heaviest of the attached lenses always points downwards and one open lens mount will be easily accessible at the top. In addition, the system comes with built-in stabilization to keep things less bumpy when walking or even running. The rotational friction of the system is automatically adjusted based on the weight of the attached lenses. 

TriLens is compatible with Canon, Nikon, and Sony-mount lenses and included in the package is a set of magnets that let you attach your lens caps to an open mount when the corresponding lens is in use. 

Frii Designs is planning to fund initial production through crowdfunding and will launch its Kickstarter campaign for the TriLens on May 9. The company’s goal is to secure around 600 pre-orders to get production going. Photographers  who think the TriLens could make their work day easier can sign up on the Frii Design website to register interest and for pricing information. You’ll also be notified about the campaign launch. If everything goes to plan, shipping is planned to start in October this year.

Sensor sales help Sony triple net profit in second quarter

Sales of image sensors helped push Sony to triple its net profit after the second quarter this year, up to 82.4 billion Yen. Sales of Devices, the category containing Sony’s sensor business, rose 35% year-on-year, which Sony attributes to higher demand of mobile products containing its sensors. Read more
