Hubble captures stunning gravitational interaction between a trio of galaxies

NASA has published a stunning image captured by the Hubble Space Telescope that shows a ‘three-way gravitational tug-of-war between interacting galaxies.’ The galaxies in the show are in system Arp 195, a system featured in the Atlas of Peculiar Galaxies, a list of the ‘weirder and more wonderful galaxies in the universe.’

Arp 195, otherwise known as UGC 4653, is a galaxy with material ejected from nuclei. It’s one of 15 Arp-numbered galaxies with this characteristic. All but one of these galaxies are interacting or have recently interacted with other celestial objects. The trademark tidal features of the galaxies, including Arp 195, appear to be the result of gravitational interactions.

Hubble’s new sighting is in the Lynx constellation, about 747 million light-years from Earth. It’s fantastic to see new images from Hubble, as the venerable space telescope suffered significant downtime following a computer glitch earlier this summer. Hubble recently returned to service and celebrated by publishing a pair of stunning monochromatic images last month.

The hiatus aside, Hubble’s observational time is valuable. NASA writes, ‘Observing time with Hubble is extremely valuable, so astronomers don’t want to waste a second. The schedule for Hubble observations is calculated using a computer algorithm which allows the spacecraft to occasionally gather bonus snapshots of data between longer observations. This image of the clashing triplet of galaxies in Arp 195 is one such snapshot. Extra observations such as these do more than provide spectacular images – they also help to identify promising targets to follow up with using telescopes such as the upcoming NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope.’

Hubble offers a unique look into distant space, and it’s great to see that the telescope is working well following its concerning issue. If you’d like to see more of what Hubble is up to, you can check out an image gallery here.

Video: Three types of photographers, illustrated by the ‘The Grand Tour’ trio

During an episode in season three of The Grand Tour, hosts Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May take a moment to sit down and discuss the photography equipment they plan to bring to photograph wildlife in Columbia.

The exchange from the trio is right on course with what you’d expect from Jeremy, Richard and James, if you know them from their Top Gear days; the guys poke fun at three different kinds of photographers and the gear they bring along for photoshoots in a way only they can.

Richard opts for the full suite of Canon prime lenses and camera bodies, complete with strobes, filters, a ThinkTank photo belt and BlackRapid camera strap to carry it all. Jeremy, on the other hand, keeps it simple with what appears to be a Canon 5DS R attached to an EF 600mm f/4L IS II. James eschews the weight and debate by further streamlining his gear with a single Canon PowerShot G9 X Mark II.

All in all, the two-minute segment makes for a few good laughs.

Lexar launches trio of ultra-compact SSD drives

Lexar has announced the SL100 Pro Portable SSD lineup, a trio of compact solid state drives that offer USB 3.1 speeds in a tiny, durable form factor.

The SSD, which weighs just 70.5g / 0.155lbs and measures in at a 73.4mm x 55mm / 2.89in x 2.17in, features a USB-C connection that offers read speeds up to 950MBps and write speeds up to 900MBps. Although the SSD isn’t ruggedized, it is protected against rough vibrations and has temperatures, with an operating temperature range of 0°C to 70°C and a storage temperature range of -40°C to 85°C.

Lexar includes its DataVault Lite software to keep files onboard the SSD safe throws in a three-year limited warranty for good measure.

The Lexar SL100 Pro Portable SSD comes in 250GB, 500GB and 1TB capacities and is available for purchase at B&H for $ 87.99, $ 134.99 and $ 239.99, respectively.

CP+ 2019: Hands-on with Tamron’s trio of full-frame lenses

Introduction

Tamron has its three newly-announced full frame lenses on show at CP+ in Yokohama. It’s a slight odd setup, though. You can look at the lenses in a glass cabinet or you can handle rather more rudimentary samples, with no marking on their switches and their names stick on with labelling tape. Thankfully we were able to convince Tamron to let us photograph the more complete versions.

Tamron SP 35mm F1.4 Di USD

The SP 35mm F1.4 Di USD [Model F045] is the company’s latest fast prime for Canon and Nikon DSLRs. It’s designed for full frame and arrives as a higher-end alternative to its stabilized 35mm F1.8 VC. It uses a conventional ring-type USD (ultrasonic drive) focus motor.

Tamron SP 35mm F1.4 Di USD

The SP 35mm F1.4 is fairly long lens but isn’t excessively wide. The company promises you get the image quality to justify the size. Tamron suggests it’s suitable for ‘nearly every photographic genre, including photojournalism, landscape, sports, street life, wedding groups and family snapshots,’ which is a pretty wide range.

Among the best 35s

Despite its fairly modest proportions (by modern standards, at least), Tamron seems bullish about the SP 35mm’s performance, saying it should by the best of its type. We were certainly impressed by how smooth and solid everything felt, when we handled it. Not a bad way to mark the 40th anniversary of the SP series.

Tamron 35-150mm F2.8-4 Di VC OSD

The Tamron 35-150mm F2.8-4 Di VC OSD [Model A043] is an interesting and somewhat unfamiliar concept: a full-frame lens extending from slightly wide-angle to moderate telepoto focal lengths, while retaining a semi-fast maximum aperture. Tamron describes it as a ‘Portrait Zoom.’

It’s about half the size of a 70-200mm F2.8, and still shorter even when extended, which should make it easy both to carry and to handle. Interestingly, the company says all its functions will remain available when adapted to a mirrorless camera. The sample we saw is fairly early, so we haven’t been able to get a sense for the speed or sound of the ‘Optimized Silent Drive’ micromotor.

35-150mm F2.8-4: handy for APS-C?

Although Tamron doesn’t mention its use on APS-C cameras, we reckon the 52.5-225mm equivalent range it would offer on a Nikon APS-C DSLR, long with the F4.2-6 equiv maximum aperture could be fairly interesting for a range of shooting situations. It wouldn’t offer especially shallow depth-of-field, but might make a temptingly portable midway point between a variable-aperture 55-200mm and the significantly higher cost of a 70-200mm lens, depending on how Tamron prices it.

Tamron 17-28mm F2.8 Di III RXD

The final lens we got to see what Tamron’s wide-angle F2.8 zoom for Sony’s E-mount cameras. The 17-28mm F2.8 Di III RXD is a full-frame zoom that makes a lot of sense alongside the relatively small 28-75mm F/2.8 Di III RXD that’s one of our favorite lenses for FE-mount Sonys.

Tamron 17-28mm F2.8 – a compact wide-angle

The Model A046 is based around the same ‘Rapid eXtra-silent stepping Drive’ focus motor used in the 28-75mm, so should be both quick and quiet. The lens itself is a touch shorter than its normal zoom counterpart but otherwise resembles it pretty closely. The biggest difference is that, unlike the 28-75mm, the 17-28mm F2.8 doesn’t extend when you zoom.

Sigma releases official pricing for trio of Photokina lenses

Sigma has announced the prices for three of the lenses it announced at the Photokina trade show in September. The 40mm F1.4 DG Art lens for full frame cameras will cost $ 1400 while the 56mm F1.4 DC DN for crop-sensor mirrorless cameras will cost $ 479. The Sony E-mount version of its 105mm F1.4 Art will sell for around $ 1600. All three will be available this month.

The 56mm F1.4 completes a trio of small, comparatively affordable fast primes for Micro Four Thirds and Sony’s E-mount. The 16mm, 30mm and 56mm F1.4s act as a wide, normal and portrait telephoto on APS-C and as a 32, 60 and 112mm equiv on Micro Four Thirds.

Manfrotto launches a trio of new center ball heads

Italian tripod maker Manfrotto has updated its line of ball tripod heads. The new 490 center ball head is an affordable model designed with simplicity in mind. The entire head is controlled via single knob, making sure the new model is easy to use. It comes with Manfrotto’s RC2 200LT-PL plate and allows for quick positioning of the camera into portrait orientation.

The company has also redesigned its 492 and 492LCD heads. Both models are manufactured in Italy and designed with ergonomics and convenience of use in mind. The LCD version comes with a cold shoe mount, allowing for mounting on top of a camera to hold external displays or others accessories via a 1/4-inch tripod mount.

The new heads are targeted at amateur photographers and have a payload of 4KG, making them ideal for smaller camera/lens combination, such as Micro Four Thirds mirrorless cameras or entry-level DSLRs.

At $ 50 (GBP 44.95) the 490 is the most affordable of the new center ball heads. The 492 is $ 60 (GPB 54.95) and the 292LCD will set you back $ 70 (GBP 64.95).

Meyer Optik Trioplan 35+ Kickstarter unlocks colorful lens trio reward

Meyer Optik has an active Kickstarter campaign seeking funding for its new Trioplan 35+ Fine Art Lens, and though 22 days remain in that campaign, backers have already well exceeded the company’s $ 50,000 base funding goal. As a reward for the high amount pledged (about $ 480,000 total at the moment), Meyer Optik has announced the launch of a new limited edition reward: green, red, blue and titanium versions of the Trioplan lens.

According to Meyer Optik, it took a total of six minutes post-launch for the Kickstarter campaign to reach its $ 50,000 funding goal. Over the following week, the Kickstarter went on to raise in excess of $ 420,000, and the company has launched the special Kickstarter stretch reward as a result. Says company CEO Dr. Stefan Immes, ‘The new colors are strictly limited in quantity and, therefore, [are] a real collector’s item.’

The crowdfunding campaign now includes pledge options for the new colors, of which 50 units are available per color. All four special ‘super limited color edition’ Trioplan lenses are priced at $ 799 and are estimated to ship to backers this upcoming November.

Lensbaby Trio 28 real-world sample gallery

If Lensbaby’s dreamy signature look is eye candy, then the Trio 28 is its Neapolitan ice cream. Designed for mirrorless cameras, it puts three creative lenses in one place, offering the creative effects of the company’s Twist, Velvet and Sweet optics. Rotating the lens switches between the effects, so there’s no need to swap lenses or optics, but it does mean you’re stuck with a fixed F3.5 aperture. We’ve had a chance to take it out and about.

Sigma introduces trio of firmware updates for Quattro, MC-11 and 150-600mm F5-6.3

Lens and camera manufacturer Sigma has released three firmware updates that improve the functionality of its sd Quattro camera, the company’s MC-11 mount adapter and the two versions of its 150-600mm F5-6.3 zoom lens.

The update to the sd Quatrro camera deals with an issue that causes the camera to freeze when being controlled via the company’s Capture Pro tethered-shooting software package, while the update for the MC-11 prepares the device for Sigma’s new and forthcoming 12-24mm F4, 500mm F4 and 85mm F1.4 lenses. The MC-11 allows users to mount certain Sigma EF- and SA-mount lenses to Sony E-mount cameras, and the update improves AF accuracy of EF-mount lenses that aren’t fully compatible with the system. It also allows lenses with Optical Stabilizer built-in to switch off in-body stabilization systems to use the in-lens system even when the lens isn’t fully compatible with the MC-11. With the firmware installed the start-up time of the combination is also improved.

AF accuracy is also the main theme of the update to the 150-600mm F5-6.3 DG OS HSM Sports and Contemporary lenses in the Canon and Sigma mounts. The lenses will perform better when used with the MC-11 mount adapter, and with the sd Quattro in the case of the Sigma mount version. The update also reduces the sound made by the aperture blades in the Canon mount versions during filming both with and without the MC-11 – and the lenses are now fully functional with the Canon Digital Cinema Camera EOS C300 Mark ll.

Those with the Sigma USB dock can install these updates themselves, and those who don’t have it can take their lenses and MC-11 to a Sigma approved service center and have the firmware updates installed for free. For more information visit the Sigma website.

Three’s company: Lensbaby launches Trio 28 for mirrorless cameras

Lensbaby has announced the Trio 28, a unique creative lens designed specifically for mirrorless camera users. The Trio 28 is three lenses in one, offering the creative effects of Lensbaby’s Twist, Velvet and Sweet optics in one compact lens. A simple rotation of the lens lets you switch between the three effects, and the 28mm focal length makes it a useful all-around lens for mirrorless photographers.
