Vertical Landfill: Monument to Civilization Honors Our Trash

Monument to Civilization Vertical Landfill 1

Nearly all of our most majestic architecture reflects pinnacles of achievement for our species, and one architect aims to call attention to yet another way in which we are ‘spectacular:’ our unmatched ability to produce incredible amounts of waste. ‘Monument to Civilization‘ is a vertical landfill tower that offers both a serious solution for urban waste management and a commentary on our unsustainable habits.

Monument to Civilization Vertical Landfill 3

The third place winner in eVolo’s 2012 Skyscraper Competition, ‘Monument to Civilization’ is not just a sobering daily reminder of how wasteful we can be, and the pressing need for new solutions. It’s also a power plant, harvesting methane gas from all that rotting trash and using it to help keep the city running.

Monument to Civilzation Vertical Landfill 4

Lin Yu-Ta envisions a narrow tower reaching high into the sky. Noting that we often “build towers for towers’ sake,” the Taiwanese designer puts some meaning behind the spectacle: the 1,318-meter (4,324-foot) height of this tower proposal represents the space that would be needed to store just a single year worth of trash from New York City alone.

Monument to Civilization Vertical Landfill 5

“The ever-growing Monument may evoke the citizens’ introspection and somewhat leads to the entire city’s waste-decreasing and better recycling. Perhaps all metropolitan cities would inverse the worldwide competition from being the tallest to the shortest.”

Dystopian Dumpster Living: Trash Bins Turned Tiny Houses

18 Dec

[ By Steph in Architecture & Cities & Urbanism. ]

Giant receptacles for trash have been transformed into the most unexpected things – swimming pools, bars, giant pinhole cameras, and now tiny ‘living containers’ on wheels. German designer Philipp Stingl envisions a future in which the growing elderly population requires cheap and portable housing, and these lockable rolling dumpsters would certainly fit the bill.

The set of ‘housing containers’ includes a larger yellow dumpster with a door, window and a drinking canister; the top opens like a normal dumpster and has a net in the lid for storage. The second unit is smaller, meant to be used as a bath tub.

The designer created these containers for a rather bleak future in which social systems collapse and “from the ashes an aging society will rise, marked by crime, sickness and poverty.”

One can only imagine that Stingl is being satirical when he states, “Essentially, these ‘living containers’ testify to an active and creative lifestyle for the old age without compromises.” It’s hard to ignore the implications of placing the homeless and elderly in trash containers. However, this concept isn’t much different from many other economical ideas for homeless housing, which can also be used as emergency shelters in the event of a disaster.

Mr Kodi: Trash Thief

07 Dec

As I mention in the video my wife and I have been trying to figure out if one of us leaves the cloest door open in the office, allowing our oldest dog, Kodi, to gain access to the trash can inside to pick out wrappers and trash. So I set the webcam up and we left the house for a little while. Low and behold after 2 minutes he comes in the room, and pushes the door open, and steals trash. He comes back 3 minutes later for more. We adopted Mr. Kodi from the SPCA. he’s a boxer/pit/something mix. He’s 4.5 years old 52 second mark for when he opens the door, and 1 min 55 second mark for when he comes back again. Guilty!!
