Trippy Tiles: Optical Illusion Installation Will Mess with Your Brain

14 Oct

[ By SA Rogers in Design & Fixtures & Interiors. ]

Looking at this picture, it seems pretty obvious that something is seriously wrong with the floor… right? And yet, as we should all know by now, things aren’t always as they seem, no matter how hard our brains try to reconcile the fact that a flat surface can look so believably sunken on one side. It’s kind of hard to wrap your mind around the fact that the effect is achieved simply by warping the shape of the tiles as they’re applied to the floor.

The new entrance floor at Casa Ceramica #Manchester now try and process that this floor is actually flat!! #tile #floorporn #decorporn #decor #tileporn #architectureporn #tiles #trippy #tilelove #love #lookbook #lovetiles #largeformat #largeformattiles #decor #design #detail #designer #decorporn #illusion #instagood #interiors #innovation #illusionist #ihavethisthingwithtiles #ihavethisthingwithfloors #roomdecor #roomforinspo #lovetiles #architectureporn #alice #aliceinwonderland

A post shared by Casa Ceramica Tile Company (@casaceramicatiles) on

Casa Ceramica Tile Company created the illusion for the entrance to their own showroom in Manchester, UK. People must have had a hard time believing that the tiles are really flat from initial photos posted to Instagram and Twitter, because the company posted subsequent photos and videos of the installation process, saying “Like our entrance floor made from tiles #sorrynotsorry.”

Apparently, the illusion only works from one direction, and when visitors are exiting the building, it looks like a normal tile walkway.

Unsurprisingly, the illusion blew up on Twitter and became something of an internet sensation. You might dig through the company’s website or Instagram hoping for more optical illusions, but it looks like most of their work is pretty standard. Maybe this project will get them some fun commissions.

Camouflaged Solar Panels: Tesla Roof Tiles Power Home Batteries & Electric Cars

21 Nov

[ By WebUrbanist in Gadgets & Geekery & Technology. ]

Elon Musk is attacking the question of energy storage and consumption at home, first with electric cars, then with home batteries and now the final piece of the puzzle: solar panels people will actually want to show off.

tesla-material-types

Developed in collaboration with 3D, their semi-translucent Solar Roof tiles cost less than ordinary roofs, insulate better and best of all they generate energy to charge your electric batteries (Powerwall) and automobiles (Model X). This is effectively the final missing piece from the ultimate sustainable-power smart house.

The three-layered design features a normal solar panel at the bottom with a film on top that renders it invisible from below but operational under the sun’s rays coming from above. At the top is a tempered glass that is shatter-resistant, making it more durable than conventional clay (with a lifespan well beyond the typical 20-year roof).

Aside from these benefits, perhaps the single biggest selling point is the array of material styles: Textured Glass, Slate Glass, Tuscan Glass and Smooth Glass. It may sound superficial but looks matter — neighbors complain and residents shy away from too-overt solar tech attached to their house.

And people trust Tesla to do more than make better technology: they expect a high level of visual design as part of the package. Also, since they are all coming from the same collection of companies, one can expect superior installation and integration options tying Tesla cars, Powerwalls and Solar Tiles together. Between the tech and its brand backing, this development promises to boost solar adoption to new heights.

80,000 Tiles Tell Story of Amsterdam’s Growth in New Bike Tunnel

22 Mar

[ By Steph in Art & Street Art & Graffiti. ]

A 361-foot tunnel connecting the historic city center of Amsterdam to its revitalized industrial waterfront district symbolically links past and present with a stunning mural made up of 80,000 tiles. Design firm Benthem Crouwell used iconic Delft blue tiles to paint a picture of a fleet of ships on treacherous seas, taking inspiration from 18th century Rotterdam tile painter Cornelis Boumeester.

Stretching the entire length of the Cuyperspassage tunnel, which is open only to pedestrians and cyclists, the mural bears a striking resemblance to Boumeester’s depiction of the Warship Rotterdam and Herring Fleet, completed in 1725.

This traditional view of the Netherlands starts to shift and change the further you walk or bike into the tunnel. The illustrative style starts to get pixelated about halfway through, growing more and more abstract until it’s simply an arrangement of blue-hued tiles.

It’s a beautiful way to symbolize the growth and change the city has experienced over the past few centuries, with the potential to become as large a part of the nation’s cultural and artistic identity as the work that inspired it.

A few nice visual art images I found:

A NEW VISUAL arts exhibition has opened in Dublin which features over 90 artists from five continents.

Dublin Contemporary 2011 includes a range of talks, tours and special events in conjunction with a wide range of exhibits.

Four main galleries are participating in the event – the Douglas Hyde Gallery, the Hugh Lane, the National Gallery of Ireland and the Royal Hibernian Academy – and a major exhibition called The Office of Non-Compliance is housed in Earlsfort Terrace (I have obtained a press pass and hope to visit next week).

The Iveagh Gardens are being transformed into a sculpture garden throughout the six-week event.

Meanwhile, out on the city’s streets, artist Katie Holten has been leaving a series of hand-painted ceramic tiles bearing lines from On The Nature of Things by Lucretius.
