Condé Nast has cut ties with Mario Testino and Bruce Weber amid sexual misconduct allegations

A shocking report published by the New York Times this past Saturday shares a slew of sexual misconduct allegations against iconic fashion photographers Bruce Weber and Mario Testino. The allegations, which both photographers categorically deny, have already convinced Condé Nast to sever ties with Testino and Weber “for the foreseeable future”, and come just as the publisher is finalizing a new Code of Conduct.

Allegations Against Two Fashion Industry Giants

The Times article quotes former assistants and current and former male models who shared sometimes graphic harassment and molestation stories of their photo shoots with Testino and Weber. In light of these allegations, Condé Nast has promised not to commission any new work from either Weber or Testino. The official statement by both Anna Wintour, artistic director of Condé Nast and editor of Vogue, and Bob Sauerberg, CEO of Condé Nast, reads:

We are deeply disturbed by these accusations and take this very seriously. In light of these allegations, we will not be commissioning any new work with Bruce Weber and Mario Testino for the foreseeable future.

Both Weber and Testino vehemently deny the accusations. Weber told the Times in a statement that he is, “completely shocked and saddened by the outrageous claims being made against me, which I absolutely deny,” while Testino’s lawyers “objected to the allegations and called the credibility of the men who said they were harassed into question,” according to the Times.

A New Code of Conduct at Condé Nast

In addition to cutting ties with the two fashion photographers, Condé Nast also announced a new code of conduct today. The code, which the publisher began working on after cutting ties with photographer Terry Richardson—is meant to protect models from sexual harassment and workplace abuse, and will go into effect at the end of the month.

Bob Sauerberg, CEO of Condé Nast, revealed a few of the new “guidelines for vendors” who plan to work with the publisher in the future:

  1. All models appearing in fashion shoots must be at least 18 years old. The only exceptions that will be made are for subjects appearing as themselves as part of a profile or news story, who will be required to have a chaperone with them on set at all times.
  2. Alcohol is no longer allowed on Condé Nast sets. Recreational drugs are also not allowed.
  3. Photographers are no longer permitted to use a Condé Nast set for any work that is not commissioned or approved by Condé Nast.
  4. Any shoot involving nudity, sheer clothing, lingerie, swimwear, simulated drug or alcohol use, or sexually suggestive poses must be approved in advance by the subject.

Sauerberg expects to release the full code of conduct by the end of the month, at which point he hopes “our colleagues and partners will adopt these or similar recommendations so that each of us involved in the creative process does our part to help ensure a safe and respectful work environment.”

Sony a7R III ties Nikon D850: Best mirrorless full-frame camera DxOMark has ever tested

28 Nov

DxOMark has just published their review of the Sony a7RIII’s sensor, and no surprises here: it ties the Nikon D850 as the best full-frame camera they’ve ever tested with a score of 100. This also makes it the best mirrorless full-frame camera DxOMark has ever tested, besting the former king, the Sony a7R II, which scored a 98.

From the moment Sony debuted the a7R III, it became clear there was only one competitor for this mirrorless beast: The Nikon D850. And as DxO makes clear in their review headline, the D850 has now met “its mirrorless match.” In fact, it would be a stretch to call one of the cameras better overall than the other. Here’s how their scores break down:

As DxOMark makes clear in its conclusion, which camera you prefer (or should prefer) has to do with your own use case:

Comparing the A7R III sensor to the Nikon D850’s reveals the advantage that the Nikon camera’s lower minimum sensitivity (ISO) value brings. Photographers who predominantly shoot in bright light or capture motionless subjects with the camera on a tripod will record the most information, be it color, tone, or detail with the Nikon D850 set to ISO 32. However, if they require values above that, the Sony A7R III sensor produces marginally better images.

By now it should be obvious why the Sony a7RIII tied with the Nikon D850 for our best camera above $ 2,000: it’s next to impossible to pick one over the other unless you have a specific use case in mind. Check out DxOMark’s full review for a deeper dive on this particular camera sensor, and if you want even more you can read our full review as well.

DxOMark: Samsung Galaxy Note 8 ties iPhone 8 Plus as best ever smartphone camera

07 Oct

News that Apple’s new iPhone 8 Plus had suddenly taken the top spot on DxOMark’s smartphone camera rankings was met with the expected range of praise and critique—everything from “of course, iPhone’s are awesome cameras” to “how much did Apple pay DxOMark for this result!?” But it turns out the iPhone 8 Plus’ ranking as the best smartphone camera DxOMark had ever tested didn’t last very long.

As of today, the iPhone 8 Plus has been tied by the Samsung Galaxy Note 8, which significantly bested its Photo score and only tied the iPhone 8 Plus overall because Apple’s smartphone does so much better in the video category.

The full breakdown of the results can be found on DxOMark, but this comparison between the two phones’ scores speaks volumes:

The Photo categories where the Note 8 really outperformed the iPhone include Autofocus (94 vs 74) and Zoom, where the Note 8 got a score of 66 to the iPhone’s 51. DxOMark’s conclusion is appropriately praiseworthy:

When all the tests are verified, the scores calculated, and the perceptual analyses discussed, the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 comes out as an outstanding choice for the smartphone photography enthusiast, matching the top overall score of 94 points of the iPhone 8 Plus. Dual-cam setups offering a second telephoto zoom for portraits are a real step forward for high-end smartphone photography, and the implementation on the Note 8 is exceptional, making it the best smartphone for zoom shots we’ve tested.

Read DxO’s full thoughts and see all of their sample and test photos at this link. And if you’re an Android user in need of some serious photography power from you smartphone, the Galaxy Note 8 should definitely make it to the top of your list.

DxOMark Mobile report: Sony Xperia Z3 ties for first

21 Sep

The Sony Xperia Z3 is Sony’s latest waterproof flagship smartphone, picking up where the Z2 left off. Like that phone it’s 4K capable and also offers an atypically-large 1/2.3″-type sensor. Just like the Z2, that’s a 20.7MP Exmor RS stacked CMOS sensor nestling behind a 27mm equivalent F2.0 lens. All this has encouraged Sony to offer ISO 12,800, which it says is the highest of any smartphone. Learn more about how it performs

Trained Eye: Rail Art Plays Visual Tricks with Tracks & Ties

train art rail music

This artist colors outside the lines (or off the rails, if you will) with his clever train-centric creations, dashing onto the tracks to complete pieces that play with the site-specific transit infrastructure in public places.

Portuguese artist Artur Bordalo (AKA Bordalo II) works in and around the train lines, using what is there as props and backdrops for his colorful compositions, turning them into musical lines, extended arms or text underlines.

Many of these are necessarily quickly-executed pieces, placed as they are around active train tracks, while others use abandoned railways and include three-dimensional objects in the mix.

We would be remiss not to mention his other works of urban installation art, often vibrant and including mixed-media elements drawn together, collaged and montaged from their environments (often including garbage and even its receptacles).

Electrifying Art: Sculptures Made of Wire and Cable Ties

10 Jun

[ By Steph in Art & Sculpture & Craft. ]

Cable Tie Sculptures 1

All it took to create this series of sculptures – aside from ingenuity and artistic talent, of course – was a trip to the hardware store for some electrical wire and cable ties. Artist Pavel Sinev coils black and white wires into works of art that range from the straightforward to the slightly surreal, like a vaguely disturbing baby with a bottle in its mouth.

The wiring is carefully wound into three-dimensional shape and held together with the zip ties, the designs ultimately reflecting the unconventional ways in which common household materials can be used with a little creativity.

Wire is a surprisingly versatile artistic medium. Check out a stunningly intricate motorcycle and sidecar by Chinese artist Shi Jindian, fluid human sculptures by Derek Kinzett, minimalist works by Gavin Worth and more.
