Thunderbolt 4: Same speeds as Thunderbolt 3, but more functionality available

Intel has released the full specifications for Thunderbolt 4, the successor to Thunderbolt 3 that was first announced earlier this year. As previously stated, Thunderbolt 4 will not offer a speed increase over Thunderbolt 3 — it will, however, still represent an important upgrade for the protocol.

Intel released the minimum system specifications for Thunderbolt 4 on Wednesday, July 8, explaining that it will feature USB4 compliance in addition to ‘expanded capabilities.’ Notable changes introduced by Thunderbolt 4 will include double the data and video minimum requirements compared to Thunderbolt 3, requiring minimum support for two 4K displays or a single 8K display.

As well, Thunderbolt 4 will offer the full 40Gb/s speed of Thunderbolt 3 with cables up to 2m (6.5ft) in length. Whereas Thunderbolt 3 has minimum support of 16Gb/s for PCIe connections, Thunderbolt 4 will boost this to 32Gb/s. When it comes to USB4 (which uses the same USB-C connector), speeds top out at 20Gb/s with 7.5W of power delivery and support for a single 4K display.

Beyond that, Thunderbolt 4 will require Intel VT-d DMA protection and support for accessories like docks that have four Thunderbolt ports. Other minimum requirements include that Thunderbolt 4 docks must wake the PC from sleep and that notebooks requiring less than 100W of power must include at least one Thunderbolt 4 port for charging.

Though it’s clear at this point that Thunderbolt 4 won’t offer faster speeds than Thunderbolt 3, it is ultimately an upgrade over the current specification, offering double the minimum requirements in some cases. As expected, Intel says it is working closely with manufacturers on the Thunderbolt 4 certification standards.

Talking about this is storage company Kensington’s VP Ben Thacker, who said:

We expect Thunderbolt 4 products to be an inflection point for accessory makers who depend on PCs and Macs to offer an industry-leading set of product capabilities for a consistent user experience. The advancements in Thunderbolt 4 will help Kensington redefine the modern workspace of the future.

Consumers will benefit from the new minimum specifications, including the future arrival of faster Thunderbolt 4 drives, guaranteed support for two external 4K monitors and the ability to charge a slim notebook from at least one of the Thunderbolt 4 ports. These likewise exceed that of the USB4 spec, which uses the same port as Thunderbolt 3 and 4.

Ultimately, consumers can expect to see Thunderbolt 4 devices start arriving later this year when Intel makes its controllers available to accessory and computer manufacturers. It’s unclear how many of these products we can expect to see before 2021, however.

Blackjet’s CFexpress Type B and XQD card reader, 4-bay Cinema Dock offer Thunderbolt 3 performance

Blackjet has two relatively new storage peripherals: the new TX-4DS four-bay Cinema Dock with Thunderbolt 3 and the TX-1CXQ reader for CFexpress Type B and XQD cards. Both products offer rapid data transfer speeds up to 40Gb/s due to the inclusion of Thunderbolt 3, making them suitable for users who often shoot Ultra HD footage, manage data-heavy projects or who need to rapidly transfer large batches of images between drives.

The Blackjet TX-1CXQ Thunderbolt 3 hub features support for CFexpress Type B cards and Sony XQD / XQD 2.0 cards with ingest speeds up to 1600MB/s and 500MB/s, respectively. The hub is powered by the Thunderbolt 3 cable that connects the device to the user’s computer. The TX-1CXQ works with Windows 10 and macOS 10.12 and higher.

The model is priced at $ 199 but is listed on multiple online retailer websites as on backorder without clear availability or shipping dates at this time.

Joining the card reader is the Blackjet TX-4DS Thunderbolt 3 Cinema dock, which features four M.2 NVMe SSD enclosures, dual Thunderbolt 3 ports for daisy-chaining up to five Thunderbolt devices (displays, external drives, etc.), and optional reader modules for directly turning the inputs into CFast 2.0, XQD, SDXC, SSD, SxS and CFexpress card readers.

The TX-4DS features a built-in cooling fan and can be configured with RAID 0, RAID 1 and JBOD using the included software. The unit measures 120 x 145 x 155mm (4.7 x 5.7 x 6.1in); it is compatible with Windows 10 and macOS 10.12 or higher.

The enclosure is available from numerous retailers, including Amazon and Adorama, for $ 499.99—the price doesn’t include SSD drives, which are sold separately. You can find out more information on Blackjet’s website.

ProGrade Digital releases new Thunderbolt 3 CFexpress/XQD, updated CFexpress/SD card readers

ProGrade Digital has announced the release of the PG04 and PG05.5, a pair of memory card readers designed to make the most of their respective compatible media formats.

First up is the PG04, a single-slot Thunderbolt 3 reader for CFexpress Type B and XQD cards that offers max transfer speeds up to 40Gb/s (5GB/s). The PG04 comes with a Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 3 cable as well as ProGrade’s patent-pending adhesive metal plate for attaching the magnetic reader to various surfaces.

Next up is the dual-slot PG05.5, a replacement for ProGrade Digital’s PG05 that features a CFexpress Type B (not compatible with XQD cards) and SD card slot (UHS-II). The updated reader uses a USB 3.2 Gen 2 interface that offers speeds upwards of 10Gb/s (1.25GB/s). The PG05.5 comes with a USB Type C to USB Type C cable, a USB Type C to USB A cable and ProGrade’s patent-pending adhesive metal plate.

The PG04 and PG05.5 are currently available to purchase for $ 129.99 (Adorama, B&H) and $ 79.99 (Adorama, B&H), respectively.

Plugable launches 512GB version of its Thunderbolt 3 NVMe drive with read speeds up to 2,400MB/s

Back in November 2019, accessory manufacturer Plugable launched its 1TB and 2TB Thunderbolt 3 NVMe drives. Now, roughly three months later, Plugable has announced it’s now offering the same drive in a 512GB capacity for those who don’t need as much space or prefer to keep their content spread across multiple smaller drives.

Like its larger counterparts, the 512GB Thunderbolt 3 NVMe drive is powered entirely through its integrated Thunderbolt 3 cable and features sequential read speeds up to 2,400MB/s and write speeds up to 1,800MB/s. The drive works at full-speed with any Thunderbolt 3-compatible macOS or Windows computer and is backward compatible at USB-C speeds on computers without Thunderbolt 3.

The drive is constructed of aluminum and weighs just 173g (6.1oz).The 512GB Plugable Thunderbolt 3 NVMe drive will retail for $ 200, but is currently available for a launch-special price of $ 180 (when you clip the coupon code).

Plugable’s new 1TB, 2TB Thunderbolt 3 NVMe SSDs offer read speeds up to 2800MB/s

Computer accessory manufacturer Plugable has announced the release of its updated Thunderbolt 3 NVMe External SSDs, now with 1TB and 2TB capacities.

The compact drive is constructed of solid anodized aluminum, weighs 173g (6.1oz) and features an integrated 18cm (7in) 40Gbps Thunderbolt 3 cable (read: not removable). Plugable claims the drive offers read and write speeds of up to 2800MB per second and 1800 MB per second, respectively, thanks to its PCIe Gen3 x4 connection.

In our tests with a 1TB review unit Plugable sent our way to test out the claimed speeds, we were able to reach sustained write speeds of 1915MB per second and sustained read speeds of 2331MB per second using the Blackmagic Design Disk Speed test on macOS Catalina.

These drives are backwards compatible with USB-C connections, but to get the fastest speeds, you’ll want to make sure the computer you’re plugging it into features Thunderbolt 3 connectivity. The drives come pre-formatted with exFAT out of the box, but can be reformatted to work with any other macOS or Windows system.

The 1TB and 2TB Plugable Thunderbolt 3 NVMe External SSDs are currently available for $ 299 and $ 499, respectively. Plugable is offering a ‘launch discount’ of $ 50 on the 1TB drive and $ 100 on the 4TB drive for an unspecified amount of time. All units come with a 36-month warranty.

Dell’s new UltraSharp 27″ 4K Thunderbolt 3 monitor has 100% Adobe RGB coverage, built-in colorimeter

Dell has used Adobe MAX as an opportunity to announce the UltraSharp 27 4K PremierColor Monitor, a new 4K (3840 x 2160 pixels) Thunderbolt 3 monitor made with photographers and videographers in mind.

The monitor, which goes under the product code UP2720Q, is the world’s first 27-inch 4K monitor with a built-in colorimeter and Thunderbolt 3 connectivity that not only makes it possible to daisy-chain two monitors together but also lets you fully power a connected laptop at up to 90W.

The monitor features 100-percent Adobe RGB coverage, 98-percent DCI-P3 coverage and 80-percent BT2020 coverage — impressive numbers considering all of the other features this monitor has to offer. The stand-out feature of this monitor is a built-in colorimeter that pops out of the bottom bezel of the display and works with CalMAN color calibration software to consistently check the monitor’s color accuracy.

Other specs include a pixel density of 163ppi, a 1,300:1 contrast ratio, an 8ms response time and a less-then-stellar 250 nits ‘typical’ brightness. Aside from the two Thunderbolt 3 ports (one upstream, one downstream), the display also features one Display Port 1.4 connection, two HDMI connections, three USB 3.2 Gen 2 ports (downstream) and a single USB 3.2 Gen 2 port (downstream) with 2A ‘Power Charging.’

The monitor comes with an included shading hood and is expected to ship January 15, 2020 for $ 1,999.99.

Glyph launches new Atom NVMe SSD and Thunderbolt 3 dock with dual 4K display support

Glyph Production Technology has introduced its new Thunderbolt 3 Dock and Atom NVMe SSD products, enabling graphics professionals to expand the number of ports and storage available on their MacBook Pro or any other computer with Thunderbolt 3 support.

The new Glyph Thunderbolt 3 dock connects to a laptop via its USB-C Thunderbolt 3 port, enabling the user to both charge their device and transmit data using a single cable. The dock features an SD UHS-II card slot, a pair of USB 3.0 ports, as well as one USB-C 3.1 Gen2 port.

The model also offers separate audio jacks for microphone out and audio out, Gigabit Ethernet connectivity, and support for either one 5K display at 60Hz or two 4K displays at 60Hz. Users can also upgrade an NVMe SSD drive in a dedicated slot; the dock supports read and write speeds up to 1500MB/s.

Joining the dock is Glyph’s new Atom Pro NVMe SSD, a drive offered in capacities up to 2TB with read speeds up to 2800MB/s and write speeds up to 2400MB/s. According to Glyph, its new SSD is designed to handle demanding workflows, including projects involving 4K/8K video and VR. The drive’s case is MIL-Standard 810F rated to withstand exposure to sand, dust, shock, and vibration.

Glyph offers its products through a number of online retailers, including Filmtools, B&H Photo, and Adorama. The Thunderbolt 3 dock is available with 500GB – 2TB capacities starting at $ 299.95 USD, and the NVMe SSD is available in 1TB-2TB capacities starting at $ 499.95 USD.

LaCie unveils Thunderbolt 3 desktop storage devices

LaCie has launched three new Thunderbolt 3 desktop storage devices, the 12big, 6big and Bolt3. All three devices are, according to LaCie, the fastest desktop storage solutions currently on the market, making them suitable for storing and editing 4K and 6K video content, among other things. The Bolt3 offers 2TB of storage, the 6big offers up to 60TB, and the 12big offers up to 120TB.

The Bolt is the smallest of the three products, offering speeds up to 2800MB/s. According to LaCie, this model can handle raw video from a Blackmagic or RED camera, and can be used to transcode up to 6K footage using Adobe Premiere Pro or something similar. It only takes about 5 minutes to transfer a terabyte of 4K ProRes 4444 XQ video from the Bolt3 to the 12big.

The LaCie 6big offers speeds up to 1400MB/s and the 12big has speeds up to 2600MB/s. These models can be used to edit uncompressed 10-bit and 12-bit HD videos or multiple streams of ProRes 422 HQ and ProRes 4444XQ footage. The company also says raw photos can be accessed and edited in Lightroom without lag. A custom Pelican Storm case will be available for these two models.

The LaCie Bolt3 is engineered for long term reliability—from the enclosure to the internal components—to endure intensive storage tasks. Each product is individually Computer Numerical Control machined from solid aluminum blocks for rigid durability and heat dissipation. Effective cooling helps to ensure long-term component health. The stand securely docks the product with powerful neodymium magnets—and detaches for easy transport.

Thunderbolt 3 speeds of up to 2600MB/s for LaCie 12big and 1400MB/s for LaCie 6big slash time off nearly every post-production workflow task. Users can then edit multiple streams of ProRes 422 (HQ), ProRes 4444 XQ, as well as uncompressed HD 10-bit and 12-bit video. What’s more, photographers can transfer RAW photos quickly and edit in Adobe Lightroom without lag. Plus, with up to 120TB of capacity, the LaCie 12big can store 100 hours of 4K ProRes 4444 XQ footage in RAID 5*.

With double the video bandwidth of its predecessor, Thunderbolt 3 lets a user daisy chain dual 4K displays or a single 5K display to the LaCie 12big or LaCie 6big. With two 4K displays, users can spread out their workspace by dedicating one display to the timeline and the other to previewing 4K footage, for example. It’s even possible to power a compatible laptop through the USB-C cable**. Additionally, the user can connect to USB 3.0 computers via the included USB-C to USB-A cable.

The LaCie 12big and LaCie 6big are engineered to handle demanding video workflows. Front-accessible drives offer convenient and quick drive replacement and front-facing drive status LEDs help the user keep track of drive health and RAID build status. The aluminum enclosure dissipates heat far better than plastic, while two thermoregulated fans pull heat away from internal components. Both the LaCie 12big and LaCie 6big are protected by a five-year limited warranty that covers drives, enclosure and spare parts.
