Thinker Thing: 3D-Printed Object Made Using Brain Waves

31 May

[ By Steph in Gadgets & Geekery & Technology. ]

3D Printed with the Brain 1

Small electrical impulses detected by a brain-computer headset produce strange and amazing 3D printed objects in a new project by George Laskowsky of Thinker Thing.  The Emotiv EPOC headset analyzes brain patterns and uses it to understand the wearer’s emotional response to certain features in visual stimuli; in this way, the wearer is able to ‘grow’ a three-dimensional model with their mind.

Laskowsky successfully created the first real physical object made with brain patterns in May, and set out to fund the project on IndieGoGo. Thinker Thing will take the invention to Chile, where children will use the technology to create fantastical creatures, which will be exhibited in a gallery.

3D Printed with the Brain 2

How is it possible to create an object with the mind? “We use your brain patterns to evolve a 3D model from a genetic seed, which can then be made real with a standard 3D printer. The DNA seed defines the start point of an evolutionary chain for the object. Dinosaurs are very diverse, for example, but they can be traced back to a single common dna ancestor. We create this first DNA definition as the first building block from which all future objects evolve. The DNA of the object is then mutated over each generation, and how well that new mutations does, whether it lives or dies, is determined by the mind.”

3D Printed with the Brain 4

“We are all born creative, our brain begins like an open field and can make connections in many directions, it is only later we become stuck in the ruts and troughs of the paths that our mind constantly treads, paths so deep we are sometimes unable to see that there is still an open field around us. Mistaking skill (a learned ability) with creative imagination is like believing walking in a deeper rut gives you greater freedom of movement across the field.”

Flickr: Yahoo CEO sorry for ‘no such thing as pro photographers’ comment, Pro accounts live on

23 May

marissa_new4.jpg

Much of the fallout surrounding Flickr’s massive updates this Monday continues to center around the legacy ‘Pro’ accounts and a contentious statement from Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer: ‘There’s no such thing as Flickr Pro today because […] there’s really no such thing as professional photographers anymore.’ She apologized today for her ‘misstatement’, and it appears that existing Flickr Pro account holders will now be able to take advantage of unlimited storage. Read all about it at connect.dpreview.com.

Sandra draws an abstract thing: Week 2 of 52

06 Feb

The song is an a capella cover of Radiohead’s “Dollars and Cents” by Dorien who can be found soundcloud.com This is week two of my year-long project and i had a few problems doing it. (Some poor lighting and poor focus and poor white balance in random parts of this video). Also, my computer stopped recognizing my camera so i couldn’t take photos, but in the end all i had to do was restart the computer.. a few times. The shape of this drawing turned out to be a weird sort-of S-letter-like thing..And a bit more random than the first one. This is a bit more than 8 hours of drawing

The Best Thing For Your Smartphone Images

08 Dec

Set Your Smartphone Pictures Free

For the photographic community I think it’s fair to say that the jury is still out so far as the legitimacy of smartphone photography goes. Some say that it’s a fad, others that it is the future. Although I am no evangelist, I do think that the quality of images now achievable is pretty impressive and I can believe a future where the point and shoot is surpassed by the smartphone camera. As you can probably tell, I love taking pictures with my camera phone.

So if you are like me your phone is probably jammed with all kinds of images none of which do anything more than live on your handset or PC.  I have always been a massive fan of printing my images, there is just something so satisfying about taking a picture from conception to capture and finally on to paper yet for some reason we don’t think that this applies to the pictures we take on our phone.  Recently I discovered the joy of printing images directly from my phone and I can hand on heart say that it’s the best thing you can possibly do with your smartphone pictures.  Just in case you aren’t sure how to get started here is a short guide:

Disclaimer – The steps below cover wireless printing from the iPhone (just because it’s the only smartphone I have).   It is possible to print from Android handsets however the operating system doesn’t (I believe) do this natively so you may need to download an separate app to do this but the process should be broadly similar.

  • The printer – The best way to print directly from your phone is by using a wireless printer however not all printers support Apple AirPrint so don’t forget to check that your printer is compatible.  The Apple website contains a list of compatible printers however its worth checking your printer manufacturers website also.
  • Get your media – You can print on any media which your printer can handle however my preference is to use one of the various pre cut photo papers which are readily available online or in any stationary store.  I personally like to print on 6 x 4 glossy sheets as I find that this give a pleasing balance between image size and quality.  You can go larger if you like but don’t forget that the maximum size you can print and maintain image quality will be dependent upon the resolution of your camera.   A batch of 50 sheets retails in the region of £5 (about $ 8 US) so assuming you already have a printer its a pretty cheap investment.

Printing

As iOS have inbuilt support for wireless printing (via AirPrint) sending your images to your printer is actually very simple.  Check out the video below to see the actual process but in summary here are the main steps:

  • Navigate to your Photos app.
  • Select a photo to print.
  • Tap the share icon (the one with the pointing arrow).
  • Tap the print icon.

Summary

Printing from your phone is a fantastic way to make more of your smartphone images and is an especially good way to share your mobile masterpieces with friends and family.  Having recently discovered the joys of printing from my phone I can highly recommend giving this a try, its cheap, easy and a great way to bring your smartphone pictures to life. Enough said!

Sandra draws an abstract thing: 5 of 52 (invisible pen/ animation)

16 Oct

The music is Murray Gold’s “I am the Doctor”, played by Mark Fowler aka UKPiano and you can watch him play this very piece right here: www.youtube.com This is the fifth video in my attempt to make 52 drawing videos in one year. I know, i’ve fallen a few weeks behind. (Pretty standard for me unfortunately). But i wanted to do something a little bit different and this one took a little bit more time. The video is made of about 6000 frames. And by that i mean I clicked the mouse with my right big toe 6000 times to take the photos. 6000 times. My leg hurts, my hand hurts, my back hurts and my shoulder hurts, but the outcome is my favorite thing i’ve ever done 🙂 And i know that there’s a 30-second out of focus scene. I only noticed when it was too late to start over again so we’re stuck with that. I took the photos with my Nikon D80 and Nikkor 35mm f/1.8 lens, using Nikon Camera Control pro with my computer. I use a Signo uni-ball dx 0.38mm ink pen.

I was able to get my hands on the new Magic Lantern build a day early so we went out and grabbed some test shots at one of our favorite locations (from The McCormick Brothers) above Foster Lake in Oregon. HDR (High Dynamic Range) is performed in camera by capturing two different ISO values. Most of these shots were at ISO 100-800 or 200-1600. Those two streams are then split and re-fused back together in post production to produce the HDR video. Magic Lantern is free for download and everything you need to produce HDR video is included and also free. Alex is truly a pioneer and he is offering the 5D Mark II build to those who donate. It will eventually be released (as this one is BETA) but you can get it early by donating. magiclantern.wikia.com Music – James Newton Howard – Prologue – Lady in the Water Check out our website or follow us on Facebook or Twitter: neumannfilms.com Facebook: www.facebook.com Twitter: twitter.com

The xx – Islands (Nosaj Thing Remix)

28 May

The spare and smoldering electro/guitar bits comprised by the xx LP are ripe for remix reduction, the latest coming from 23-year-old LA producer Jason Chung aka Nosaj Thing. His take on the best new artist of 2009’s “Islands” comes on the heels of a redo for Chalotte Gainsbourg (Radiohead and hometown brethren Flying Lotus before that), pitting its native vocals inside trip-hopped, stereoscopic synths and trickly beats, locating the xx’s “Islands” somewhere between Bristol and Flying Lotus’s Los Angeles.
