A peek inside the Samsung NX3000

When it was introduced in May 2014, the Samsung NX3000 didn’t exactly make waves in the camera industry. But it did provide an attractive 20MP sensor, articulated 3″ LCD and plenty of connectivity for a reasonable $ 520 all wrapped up in a super slim rangefinder-style ILC. Being curious about these kinds of things, we wanted to see how Samsung managed to wedge all of that tech into such a slender frame, and thanks to iFixit we can sit back at a safe distance and see how it’s made.

Before proceeding with the disassembly, the camera battery must be taken out.

If iFixit’s disassembly guides have taught us anything, it’s that cameras are held together with a metric ton of tiny screws. Not surprisingly, there are considerably fewer on the NX3000. Disassembly of the lens mount starts with the removal of four 7.3mm Phillips screws.

With a few screws on the bottom, sides and hotshoe removed, the back panel can be eased away from the body…

…And with a ribbon cable disconnected, the panel can be completely removed to reveal a cool blue motherboard.

A pair of tweezers can be used to pluck the tripod mount right out of the camera.

There are several ribbon cables to be removed before the sensor is free, but we think this is the coolest looking one.

…And here’s the sensor module.

With a couple more ribbon cables removed, the motherboard is ready to go too.

The top panel can be freed with only a few more pieces to go.

The button panel is one of the last pieces to be removed from the shell of the camera, also a striking blue color.

Vortex: Black Whirlpool Spins Endlessly in a Movie Theater

A seemingly bottomless vortex of black water spins endlessly in the unlikeliest of places: the floor of a brightly-lit movie theater in San Gimignano, Italy. Peer into its mesmerizing depths, however, and it’s easy to forget where you are, feeling as if you might get sucked inside.

‘Descension’ is an installation by artist Anish Kapoor, specifically conceived for the former cinema, which has now been transformed into a gallery. The whirlpool is among a series of works by Kapoor on display in the space, including alabaster sculptures and large-scale works in fiberglass.

“I have always thought of it (the void) as a transitional space, an in-between space,” says Kapoor. “It’s very much to do with time. I have always been interested as an artist in that very first moment of creativity where everything is possible and nothing has actually happened. It’s a space of becoming.”

The artist, who’s best known for massive inflatable buildings, London’s ArcelorMittal tower and Chicago’s iconic Cloud Gate, previously installed a spiraling black whirlpool in the floor of the Aspinwall House in Fort Kochi, India for the country’s 108-day-long contemporary art biennale.

Transformer Theater: Deserted House, Upcycled in Disguise

This incredible transforming theater, built from salvaged pieces of a deserted home, is more than meets the eye. A community theater in disguise, its contents unfold from a conventional A-frame to reveal a dynamic on-demand public viewing space.

Dubbed Open House by creator Matthew Mazzotta, what was once a dilapidated home in downtown York, Alabama, has been turned into a secret room on a large scale. The pieces were taken apart and turned into convertible stage and seating for 100+ people, but are still recognizable as elements of the house from which they came – a tribute to history with new functionality.

The venue features performances, films, music and dances. Located between the town’s central grocery store and post office, it is ideally situated to be the area’s primary community space.

Mazzotta’s “work evolves from an interest in exploring the relationship between people and their environments, as well as between each other. My practice is conceptual and manifests as participatory public interventions that aim at bringing criticality and a sense of openness to the places we live …. The objects, situations, and spaces I create as community projects and participatory interventions.”

“Often times these projects include working with local laborers, academics, engineers, builders, community members, activists, artists, poets, and anyone else that is willing to be involved in something experiential and participatory … By piercing through the roles we play in public, we break up the narratives of specific public spaces. “
