Capture One teases upcoming Capture One 20 update, including new heal and clone brushes

06 May

Earlier today, Capture One showed off a trio of major new features coming via a free update to Capture One 20 later this month. The announcement came in a live stream, which you can watch the replay of below, hosted by Product Manager Alexander Flemming and Business Development Manager David Grover.

In the live demo below, the first major new feature coming to Capture One 20 later this month is a revised healing brush for retouching images and removing unwanted spots. In the current version of Capture One 20, the healing workflow comprises creating a new heal layer, select your brush and pick a source point. Further, you can only select a single source point per layer.

In the upcoming update, the software will be able to quickly and intelligently select a source point for each instance of using the heal brush on a single ‘Heal Layer’. Per Flemming, there will be no limit to how many different heal points you can have on a single layer nor has the team found any performance issues when utilizing many heal points.

In the livestream, Flemming and Grover shared a few interesting tidbits about how the new healing brush operates. The first time you use the brush on an image, the software caches the entire image, so that all subsequent uses of the heal brush are much faster. Further, the new healing technology is adept at adjusting the luminosity of your source point to match the area you wish to heal or touch up. For example, if an area in the image with the best match for texture is brighter or darker than the area you are trying to heal, the software can match the source area by brightening or darkening it.

In addition to the new healing brush, there’s also a new clone brush. The clone brush works similarly to the new heal brush, but it creates a ‘Clone Layer’ rather than a ‘Heal Layer’. The clone brush creates a pixel-for-pixel clone, rather than replacing a healing area via a source selection. Basically, the clone brush allows you to copy a selected set of pixels from one area of your image to another area.

Another addition is the new before and after button, which can be found on the toolbar. In prior versions, seeing a before and after comparison was done via a convoluted process whereby you reset the image and then undid the reset. Now you will be able to simply press the before/after button, which creates a sliding before/after split view, showing before on the left and after on the right. This works at all zoom levels and can be used across multiple images. Users will even be able to edit in this view if they so desire. There’s also a secondary before/after mode where you can view the entire image in its before and after state, rather than using a slider.

The upcoming free update to Capture One 20 includes a new before/after view. You can use this view across multiple images at once as well, as can be seen here. Image credit: Capture One

As mentioned, the update is scheduled to arrive by the end of the month. The update will be free for all existing Capture One 20 users, including those who use Capture One Fujifilm and Capture One (for Sony). Viltrox announces new $280 33mm F1.4 autofocus lens for APS-C systems, teases upcoming 20mm T2 cine lens

14 Apr

Viltrox has announced the release of its new 33mm F1.4 APS-C autofocus lens for Canon EF-M mount, Sony E-mount and Fujifilm X-mount camera systems as well as the impending arrival of a 20mm T2 cinema lens for L-mount camera systems.

33mm F1.4 APS-C lens

The Viltrox 33mm F1.4 APS-C lens is one of the three APS-C lenses it teased back in August 2019. The autofocus lens is constructed of ten elements in nine groups, including one extra-low dispersion (ED) element and one high-refraction element.

It features Viltrox’s ‘noiseless’ stepping motor (STM focus motor) for driving the autofocus unit, features an aperture range of F1.4 through F16, uses a nine-blade aperture diaphragm, has a minimum focusing distance of 40cm (15.75in) and uses an ‘HD Nano’ multilayer coating on an unspecified number of elements to help improve water resistance and minimize chromatic aberration.

No dimensions are given for the lens in the press release, but it weighs 270g (9.5oz) and uses a 52mm front filter thread. Viltrox says pre-orders will open tomorrow on its website, with a retail price of $ 279.99.

Viltrox also told us to expect other ‘lens(es)’ to launch sometime in May, likely a nod to the 23mm and 56mm F1.4 lenses in Viltrox’s APS-C lineup.

20mm T/2 L-mount cinema lens

Viltrox has also shared the details of its forthcoming 20mm T/2 cinema lens for L-mount camera systems.

The lens will be constructed of 12 elements in 9 groups, include one double-sided aspherical element, four ED elements and one short wave-length, highly-transparent element. Like the 33mm F1.4 APS-C lens, the 20mm T/2 lens offers Viltrox’s ‘HD Nano’ coating on an unspecified number of elements.

The lens has a minimum focusing distance of 25cm (9.8in), has an aperture range of T2 through T16, uses a 14-blade aperture diaphragm and uses an 82mm front filter thread. It will measure in at just over 100mm (4in) long, 80mm (3.15in) diameter at the front and will weigh 808g (28.5oz).

No specific release date or pricing information has been given at this time, with ‘coming soon’ being the only indicator so far. We have contacted Viltrox for more information and will update this article if we receive further information.

Fujifilm shows off XF 50mm F1.0 lens, teases fastest GF lens yet

05 Feb

$ (document).ready(function() { SampleGalleryV2({“containerId”:”embeddedSampleGallery_8216158774″,”galleryId”:”8216158774″,”isEmbeddedWidget”:true,”selectedImageIndex”:0,”isMobile”:false}) });

In amongst the X100V hullabaloo in London today, Fujifilm also discussed three new lenses spread across their two interchangeable lens camera systems. Unfortunately, we have neither press releases nor full specifications for these lenses, but you can get a sense for their size and how they handle from our hands-on photos with the mockups.

The first lens is the Fujifilm XF 50mm F1.0. We’ve covered this lens before; it was originally going to be a 35mm F1.0 lens (52.5mm equivalent focal length), but Fujifilm pivoted to a 50mm F1.0 (75mm equivalent) design due to size, weight and autofocus speed considerations. As you can see, it’s still a big lens when mounted on an X-T3 and comes with a 77mm filter thread and carries a ‘WR’ label for weather resistance, but manages to weigh in under a kilo. Judging from the aperture ring, the lens is capable of a minimum aperture of F16.

Next up is the GF 30mm F3.5 for the company’s medium-format GFX system. This lens has a roughly 24mm equivalent field of view, a common moderate-wide focal length that’s handy for everything from architecture to reportage as well as video shooting. With a relatively small 58mm filter thread, we expect it to handle well on all GFX bodies thus far released, and like all GFX lenses, also comes with a ‘WR’ label for weather resistance. The 30mm F3.5 will stop down as far as F32.

Lastly we have the GF 80mm F1.7. While more substantial-looking than the 30mm, it doesn’t look out of place on the (admittedly, fairly large) GFX 100. Its F1.7 aperture makes it the fastest lens yet for the GFX system, and it offers an equivalent focal length of 63mm. It comes with a minimum aperture of F22, has a 77mm filter thread, and of course, a ‘WR’ rating for weather-resistance.

Let us know what you make of Fujifilm’s latest lenses in the comments.

OnePlus teases prototype smartphone with disappearing rear camera

03 Jan

OnePlus is expected to display its Concept One prototype smartphone at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas next week. At this point there are no plans to put the Concept One into production, instead, the device is meant to showcase OnePlus innovation in mobile device tech.

Ahead of the show the company has already posted a teaser video on Twitter, showing an ‘invisible’ rear camera that can be hidden under the glass rear panel. According to OnePlus ‘color-shifting glass technology’ is used to achieve the effect.

The team at Wired already had the chance to have a closer look at the technology and reports OnePlus is using the same technology found in sunroofs to control the transparency of the glass panel. When inactive the camera is hidden under tinted glass. When the camera is in use, the tint can be adjusted via an electrical signal and the camera and lenses become visible behind the panel.

Insta360 teases a combined action, 360-degree, drone and 1-inch camera

03 Jan

Insta360, the company behind consumer 360-degree cameras, such as the Insta360 Go or One X, as well as professional models like the Pro 2, has posted a teaser video hinting at the launch of some kind of multi-purpose or modular camera on the 7th of January.

In the video footage of several electronics items being shredded in a blender is interspersed with various action-cam and drone-filmed scenes and viewers can read the sentence ‘our next camera combines an action-cam, a 360 cam, a drone, a 1-inch cam into one.’

It appears the company is close to launching a camera that is capable of providing the functionality of a GoPro-style action cam, presumably a consumer-level 360-cam like the One X, and a camera with 1″ sensor, like the Sony RX0. And presumably this camera or modular camera system can be used for aerial filming in conjunction with a drone.

This sounds like quite a unique concept that, depending on pricing, accessory compatibility and other factors, has the potential to appeal to a very wide range of customers. We’ll know more on the 7th of January when the new product is scheduled to launch.

Sony teases its next-generation Quad-Bayer smartphone sensor

09 Nov

The people at Sony’s image sensor division have posted a teaser video for an upcoming new smartphone image sensor, the IMX686, on the Chinese social media site Weibo. The new chip is the successor to the IMX586, which was one of the first 48MP Quad-Bayer sensors and has been deployed in several high-end smartphones.

Sony does not reveal the sensor resolution or other specifications in the video but based on rumors about phones that will supposedly use the sensor GSM Arena estimates it to be between 60 and 64MP.

$ (document).ready(function() { SampleGalleryV2({“containerId”:”embeddedSampleGallery_5978174378″,”galleryId”:”5978174378″,”isEmbeddedWidget”:true,”selectedImageIndex”:0,”isMobile”:false}) });

The video reveals that the new sensor will be released in 2020 and shows a selection of still images captured in a variety of light conditions. The images are not full size, so it’s hard to make any judgements about image detail or noise, but they do look quite impressive in terms of exposure and dynamic range.

Given no phone is using the new sensor yet, Sony has used a prototype board connected to a computer to capture the samples. Have a look at the gallery above and check out the full video over on Weibo.

Xiaomi teases Mi Note 10 penta-camera smartphone with Samsung’s new 108MP sensor

02 Nov

Xiaomi has officially teased its new Mi Note 10, an upcoming handset, first teased in early August, that packs Samsung’s 108MP camera sensor inside.

The Mi Note 10 is the first smartphone to offer a ‘penta camera,’ according to Xiaomi, which has also included a 12MP portrait camera and 5MP 50x zoom camera in the same module. The model also features two other cameras on the phone’s rear that are isolated from the other three sensors: a 20MP ultra-wide-angle camera and a tiny 2MP macro camera.

Xiaomi published an image (above) of the Mi Note 10 and its five cameras on Twitter this week, teasing the handset that will be detailed at an event later this month. The company has shared a couple of sample images captured with the 108MP camera on its Twitter account, as well:

Xiaomi also tweeted a brief video clip, indicating that it demonstrates the 5MP 50x zoom camera’s capabilities:

A pair of dual-LED flash modules are expected to accompany the five cameras. GMS Arena notes that the Mi Note 10 is a global version of the China-only Mi CC9 Pro model set to launch on November 5, which packs optical image stabilization for two of the cameras, as well as a 32MP front-facing selfie camera.

Other official details about the handset are lacking at this time, but based on a previous leak, the Mi Note 10 may feature a 6.47in Full HD+ OLED display. Xiaomi will fully detail the CC9 Pro variant on November 5 and the Mi Note 10 will be fully introduced on November 14.

Adobe teases new Sensei-powered Object Selection Tool for easy masks and more

31 Oct

Adobe has shared a new sneak peek of its new Sensei-powered Object Selection Tool that will soon be available inside Adobe Photoshop CC.

As demonstrated in the video, the new tool uses Adobe Sensei AI to automatically select an object within the frame when a selection is made via the Marquee or Lasso selection modes. It’s also possible to add or remove individual elements within the image using the same Object Selection Tool for more precise edits.

This new feature appears to be a more refined version of the Select Subject Tool Adobe revealed in early 2018. It’s unknown when this new feature will make its way into Adobe Photoshop CC, but it seems as though teaser videos like this are released no more than a month or two before the feature makes it into the public version of the app.

Ilford Photo teases upcoming film stock release in multiple formats

14 Oct

Ilford Photo has posted a teaser on Twitter that appears to show the launch date of an upcoming release (or re-release) of a film stock.

In addition to a release date and time — 3pm (unknown time zone) on October 24, 2019 — Ilford shared four silhouetted images of different film formats. The obvious ones are the 35mm film canister, the roll of 120 film and the vertical 8 x 10 image. But the image with the black background isn’t as clear as the others, although the silhouette does depict a rectangle with what appears to have a 4:3 aspect ratio.

There’s plenty of speculation as to what this tweet is teasing, but Ilford Photo isn’t giving away any hints (aside from the fact it’s not ‘IlfoColor’), so it looks like we won’t know for sure for another ten days.
