PSA: Don’t film laser tattoo removals unless you too want to fry a $2,200 camera

10 Mar

Laser systems used at concerts and even self-driving cars are known for damaging camera sensors, but now there’s one more thing to add to the list — tattoo laser removal lasers, even when the laser isn’t being pointed directly at the camera.

As unfortunately demonstrated in the 37-second video above, Andy Boyd destroyed the sensors inside his $ 2,200 Sony a7S II when he was filming a laser tattoo removal.

In the video description, he writes:

‘Hot tip: Don’t record laser tattoo removal on…anything. You can see with each pulse the sensor shows new damage. The repair cost was about as much as a new camera so try to avoid this. Club lasers can do this too but we’d never seen the reflection of a laser beam do damage, only when the beam itself hits the sensor.’

Hopefully you’re never in a situation where you’re asked to film a tattoo removal — especially one that reads ‘I am juicy’ with a strawberry next to it — but in the event you are, either use a camera you don’t mind destroying or pass up the opportunity as a whole.

Modern Markings: 42 Bold Black & White Tattoo Designs

Modern tattoos are less about sailors, pin-ups and ‘MOM’ and more about bold black lines, complex geometry, architecture, esoteric imagery, glitches and even blacking out entire body parts to cover up old work. These standout themes represent some of the most visually striking, imaginative and artistically challenging styles gaining popularity in recent years.

Alone, white ink isn’t the greatest choice for a tattoo, according to many artists: it looks splotchy and uneven on all but the clearest, most evenly pale skin, fades quickly, and has a tendency to disappear into a blurry mess within a short period of time. But if you’re willing to get it touched up often to maintain it, it can be really beautiful, and it sets off black ink beautifully. Take the work of artist Mirko Sata for example – whose most common subjects are intertwined snakes.

Blackout Tattoos

What do you do when you’ve got a large number of old tattoos you want to get rid of? Laser surgery is an option for the removal of smaller tattoos, but some people get beyond that whole ‘permanent’ aspect of inking the skin in a different way. Blackout tattoos are growing increasingly popular, blocking out large areas of the body with solid swaths of black ink.

Though the lines from the old tattoo still tend to show through, and several painful sessions are often required, the look can be pretty incredible. Some people get blackout tattoos on virgin skin just for the dramatic effect. Tattooers working in this style include Chester Lee of Oddtattooer, Alex Arnautov, Simon Mora, Josh Stephens and Kenji Alucky.

White Ink Over Black Work

Fresh white ink applied over healed blackwork can also be a fun way to cover up old mistakes, and the contrast is pretty incredible right after it’s applied. Subjects have to sit for as many as five sessions to go over the white ink to make it opaque enough to stand out, and it can take years to finish a single piece. Artists who have experimented with this process include Esther Garcia, Nathan Mould, Ruslan Batyrbaev and Wayne Fredrickson.

Architecture can be a particularly striking tattoo theme, especially when it takes up large areas of the body. Artist Maxime Buchi of M-X-M has tattooed traditional Russian architecture across people’s backs, arms, legs and chests, and someone loved Haight Ashbury enough to get imagery of the famous San Francisco intersection inked onto their body by the tattoo studio of the same name. Dmitriy Tkach depicted a Victorian house with roots wrenched from the ground like a plant, while Wang Lei designed an intricately shaded classical church. Thieves of Tower, appropriately enough, often tattoos spindly towers onto their subjects.

Red Ink: 10 Closed & Abandoned Tattoo Parlors, Studios & Shops

abandoned tattoo shop 1a
Tattoos and tattooists have made their mark on society – pun intended – but what happens to your neighborhood tattoo parlor when the ink finally runs dry?

abandoned tattoo shop 1b

Sure, drive-thru is a convenient option for those visiting banks and fast food joints but tattoos? Permanent body decoration is something that shouldn’t be rushed, amiright? Obviously someone didn’t think things through before opening the Outlaw “Drive-In” Tattoo parlor in Tucumcari, New Mexico. As if Route 66 couldn’t get much cheesier and/or sleazier… wonder how many drivers got their kicks engraved all quick & easy-like while Outlaw Tattoo was open? Kudos to Todd Longwood of A Love Of Two Brains for chancing upon this remarkable discovery in late 2013.

Jersey Sore

abandoned tattoo shop 2

It’s not impossible the infamous Snooki visited this abandoned tattoo parlor in Browns Mills, New Jersey before it bit the proverbial biscuit – one fervently hopes they sterilized the equipment immediately afterwards, ideally from orbit.

OOZ Next?

abandoned tattoo shop 9

Flickr user lungstruck snapped the above closed tattoo parlor in Kent, Ohio on March 6th of 2009. Seems even inebriated college students couldn’t keep this colorful operation afloat. Then again, calling your tattoo studio “TATTOOZ” may have been unwise – who wants tattoos that ooze from a place called TATTOOZ? Besides Xzibit, that is.

Captive Imagination: Terrifying DIY Prison Tattoo Machines

28 Jun

[ By Steph in Art & Drawing & Digital. ]

Prison Tattoo Machines

When famed tattoo artist Scott Campbell visited a prison in Mexico to ink people held inside, he didn’t bring a tattoo machine – he made his own, the same way the inmates would, using the materials that can be found within the prison walls. The artist then immortalized these DIY creations in a series of realistic black-and-white watercolor paintings called ‘Things Get Better.’

Prison Tattoo Machines 3

The title refers to the ‘things’ that the guns are made of: hair picks, plastic utensils, telephone cords, batteries and ballpoint pens. Campbell spent two months visiting the prison, where he worked with the inmates and tattooed them. Since he wasn’t allowed to bring tattoo equipment inside, he had to use what was available. He donated “a few VCRs and a beaten old guitar” to the prison rec room to help the process along. The motors from the VCRs and the guitar strings, which were then used as needles, proved extremely useful for his creations. The needles were sharpened on the grout between tiles.

Prison Tattoo Machines 5

“I like the idea that inspiration can come from limitations,” Campbell told Life and Times. “There’s a general notion that inspiration is a sort of expansion of awareness or broadening of creative range. This work is inspired by parameters. The openness of a blank canvas and the infiniteness of the possibilities that canvas may contain can be paralyzing.”

Prison Tattoo Machines 4

“When I have limitations –a confined range of materials –and a specific task to fulfill, it creates a little world that I can get lost in and walls to push against. These paintings are created within parameters that we can imagine ourselves in and, in that way, are relatable. The watercolors are humble and sweet in their simplicity.”

Dear YouTube Friends and Subscribers: This is an improved higher quality video of my previous version of this video. When all the fantastic photos came out during the filming of Bel Ami of Rob in costume as Georges DuRoy, Robsessed women across the globe panted with glee! (Including me…) I collected the best of the best photos, and enhanced them in PhotoShop; and decided to create this video for us Rob as Georges fans. I chose the background song “Lying in the Hands of God” by the Dave Matthews Band (DMB) because it is just so beautiful and sexy (like Rob)… and we all know that Rob is a Sex God, aka Mr. Sex On Legs. (And I’m sure he will really prove that in Bel Ami, seducing all these older women — I think I’ll DIE and go to heaven when I see THAT on the big screen!) I discovered the song “Lying in the Hands of God” via reading the fabulous fanfic, “The University of Edward Mason” by Sebastien Robichaud — one of my very favorite stories. (In the story, “Lying in the Hands of God” is the song that Professor Mason plays in the background when he makes love to Bella for the first time. *le sigh*) I have discovered so much wonderful music via playlists in my favorite fanfic stories. I do hope you enjoy this video as much as I enjoyed enhancing the photos and creating it. Best Regards and Hugs from MelbieToast (melbietoast@yahoo.com) CREDITS SONG: Lying in the Hands of God ARTISTS: Dave Matthews Band (DMB) ALBUM: Big Whiskey & the GrooGrux King Release Date June 2, 2009
