Viltrox announces new $280 33mm F1.4 autofocus lens for APS-C systems, teases upcoming 20mm T2 cine lens

14 Apr

Viltrox has announced the release of its new 33mm F1.4 APS-C autofocus lens for Canon EF-M mount, Sony E-mount and Fujifilm X-mount camera systems as well as the impending arrival of a 20mm T2 cinema lens for L-mount camera systems.

33mm F1.4 APS-C lens

The Viltrox 33mm F1.4 APS-C lens is one of the three APS-C lenses it teased back in August 2019. The autofocus lens is constructed of ten elements in nine groups, including one extra-low dispersion (ED) element and one high-refraction element.

It features Viltrox’s ‘noiseless’ stepping motor (STM focus motor) for driving the autofocus unit, features an aperture range of F1.4 through F16, uses a nine-blade aperture diaphragm, has a minimum focusing distance of 40cm (15.75in) and uses an ‘HD Nano’ multilayer coating on an unspecified number of elements to help improve water resistance and minimize chromatic aberration.

No dimensions are given for the lens in the press release, but it weighs 270g (9.5oz) and uses a 52mm front filter thread. Viltrox says pre-orders will open tomorrow on its website, with a retail price of $ 279.99.

Viltrox also told us to expect other ‘lens(es)’ to launch sometime in May, likely a nod to the 23mm and 56mm F1.4 lenses in Viltrox’s APS-C lineup.

20mm T/2 L-mount cinema lens

Viltrox has also shared the details of its forthcoming 20mm T/2 cinema lens for L-mount camera systems.

The lens will be constructed of 12 elements in 9 groups, include one double-sided aspherical element, four ED elements and one short wave-length, highly-transparent element. Like the 33mm F1.4 APS-C lens, the 20mm T/2 lens offers Viltrox’s ‘HD Nano’ coating on an unspecified number of elements.

The lens has a minimum focusing distance of 25cm (9.8in), has an aperture range of T2 through T16, uses a 14-blade aperture diaphragm and uses an 82mm front filter thread. It will measure in at just over 100mm (4in) long, 80mm (3.15in) diameter at the front and will weigh 808g (28.5oz).

No specific release date or pricing information has been given at this time, with ‘coming soon’ being the only indicator so far. We have contacted Viltrox for more information and will update this article if we receive further information.

LEE Filters’ new LEE85 Filter System is designed specifically for mirrorless camera systems

20 Mar

LEE Filters has revealed its upcoming LEE85 Filter System designed for smaller cameras and lenses. The system features a Holder component with a locking dial for use with the related Adaptor Ring, which will be available in sizes from 37mm to 72mm, according to the company. The Holder is made from aluminum and works with the LEE85 ND Graduated and Standard filters and a clip-on Polariser.

LEE Filters presents the new LEE85 Filter System as lightweight and ideal for photographers who use small cameras and who want a compact, easily deployed filter system. The Locking Ring makes it possible to lock the Holder at a specific angle or allow it to freely rotate, depending on shooting needs. As with the larger LEE100 system before it, the LEE85 Holder can be configured with 1 – 3 filter slots using modular guide blocks.

The compatible ND filters have been designed with large tabs on the top; these feature clear labels and make it easier to insert and remove the filters from the Holder without leaving fingerprints. The LEE85 Polarizer, meanwhile, clicks directly onto the Holder and can be rotated. The entire system, including the Polarizer and up to four filters, can be stored in the included System Pouch with strap and belt loop options.

The company will offer the LEE85 Filter System in multiple bundle options: Discover Kit, Develop Kit, Aspire Kit and Deluxe Kit. All four options include the 58mm, 67mm and 72mm adaptor rings, as well as the LEE85 Holder, System Pouch and 0.6 Medium ND Graduated filter. Depending on the kit selected, buyers will also get things like the ‘Big Stopper,’ the LEE85 Polarizer, a 0.9 Medium ND Graduated filter and a cleaning cloth.

Buyers who need adaptor rings in other sizes will be able to purchase them separately. It’s unclear how much each LEE85 kit will cost at this time; the company says that its new filter system is due for release in the second quarter of this year.

The lens, which uses an identical design (mount aside) from its Sony E-mount counterpart, is constructed of 13 elements in 11 groups, has an aperture range of F1.4 through F16 and uses a 12-blade aperture diaphragm. TTArtisans releases its 21mm F1.5 prime lens for Leica M-mount camera systems

10 Dec

Third-party Chinese lens manufacturer TTArtisan has released it’s latest lens, a 21mm F1.5 prime for Leica M-mount camera systems.

We haven’t tested any of TTArtisan lenses here at DPReview, but Vincent Bihler has a great review of the TTArtisan 35mm F1.4 on 35mmc and if the image (and build) quality of the 35mm lens is anything to go by from his review, the 21mm F1.5 will likely offer plenty of bang for your buck.

The TTArtisan 21mm F1.5 Leica M-mount lens is available on Amazon* for $ 429.

PolarPro introduces ultra-lightweight filter systems with active creators in mind

13 Nov

Today, California-based filter manufacturer, PolarPro, known for their premium ND and polarizing filters for cameras, as well as drones, announced the launch of two toolless, ultra-lightweight filter systems – one matte box, Basecamp, and one landscape filter system called Summit – designed to catapult professional creatives to the next skill level.

BaseCamp Ultra-lightweight Matte Box System

A base camp is a pillar of safety, as you head out into the unknown. It’s a haven to take shelter intermittently as battle the elements and push your limits to capture the best possible footage. Camera gear is getting heavier, especially lenses as higher quality optics are implemented. PolarPro designed BaseCamp, the lightest matte box system possible at 438 grams, to alleviate the burden heavier cameras put on operators and gimbals.

Built on the foundation of PolarPro’s Quartzline series, the toolless Variable Neutral Density configuration allows photographers and filmmakers to adapt to any lighting change instantly without having to swap out filters. Its modular design, constructed out of aluminum and carbon fibers, features a removable flag and hood that allows users to customize it to suit their production requirements.

Summit Landscape Filter System

Summit is a new range filter system aimed at photographers. It allows for toolless filter swapping and, like the BaseCamp system, has been designed with a large grip handle to minimize the risk of fingerprints on the filters. Summit filters screw onto the end of your lens and were constructed, with lightweight aluminum, in a fully light-sealed system to prevent light leakage.

PolarPro is offering $ 100 off the first 300 people who purchase their Summit Landscape Kit, the BaseCamp VND Kit, and their Cores. The BaseCamp VND Kit retails for $ 799, its Core is $ 399, Rectangular Filters are $ 299 each, while Rails Kits come out to $ 119.99 each. The Summit Landscape Kit will cost you $ 699, its Core $ 299.99, both Gradient and Neutral Density Filters $ 249.99 each, and a Circular Polarizer for either the Matte Box or Filter System costs $ 150. All can be purchased on PolarPro’s website.

DULENS APO 85mm F2 is a new manual prime lens for Canon EF, Nikon F camera systems

25 Sep

A new Chinese optics manufacturer has released the DULENS APO 85mm F2, a manual medium telephoto prime for Canon EF and Nikon F camera systems.

Although not much is known about DULENS itself, Newsshooter is reporting it’s been told that the optical engineer behind DULENS is the same who helped bring the NiSI F3 and MAVO prime lenses to life.

The lens, which is inspired by the Zeiss Sonnar series, is constructed of seven elements in six groups and includes an Apochromatic element to reduce chromatic aberration. It measures 5.8cm (2.28in) long, weighs 350g (12.35oz), features a 29-degree field-of-view, uses a 55mm front filter thread and has a minimum focusing distance of 90cm (35.43in).

Below are a number of high-resolution sample images shared on the product listing. These were shot with the lens on a Lumix S1 using an EF adapter:

$ (document).ready(function() { SampleGalleryV2({“containerId”:”embeddedSampleGallery_3582120122″,”galleryId”:”3582120122″,”isEmbeddedWidget”:true,”selectedImageIndex”:0,”isMobile”:false}) });

The lens is available to pre-order in black and silver varieties for Canon EF and Nikon F camera systems. It’s currently listed for ¥2999 (approximately $ 420) on Chinese retailer Taobao, but Newsshooter says the company intends to release the lens in the United States and Europe market for $ 599.

We have contacted the retailer for more information on the lens and availability and will update this article if and when we receive a response.

SLR MAGIC expands their portfolio at IBC 2019 with additional focal lengths in MFT mount for MicroPrimes – 21mm T1.6 & 50mm T1.4

Hong Kong (13 September 2019) — Following the success of SLR Magic’s venture into affordable yet robust and high-quality cinema and photo lenses, we are pleased to announce new editions to our product range. Based on popular demand and responding to our users, we are now offering a selection of new lenses in the MFT-mount

Given the extreme popularity of our cine lenses in the E-mount range, our engineers and design team logically progressed into the development of extending mounting options.

Taking from our successful formula along with our previous offerings, SLR Magic have now produced 2 additional lengths given the popularity of Blackmagic’s Pocket 4k camera and the Z Cam E2.

Both lenses all feature full manual control, have an 82mm thread front, an 85mm front diameter for clamp-on matte box, are all 0.8 Mod geared and are almost identical in form factor and weight.

A 21mm and 50mm are now added to the MicroPrime range. With a new design, these 2 new focal lengths will now round out the existing range and provide more choice and versatility to all Micro Prime shooters. The range for MFT will now include 12mm T2.8, 18mm T2.8, 21mm T1.6, 25mm T1.5, 50mm T1.4.
