NASA uses infrared imaging to discover water on sunlit surface of the Moon

NASA’s Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) has used its onboard Faint Object infrared Camera for the SOFIA Telescope (FORCAST) to discover water molecules on the sunlit surface of the Moon. For the first time, there are indications that water may be distributed across the Moon’s surface, and not limited to just cold, dark areas of the lunar surface.

SOFIA’s infrared camera, used in conjunction with a 106-inch diameter telescope, picked up ‘the specific wavelength unique to water molecules, at 6.1 microns, and discovered a relatively surprising concentration in sunny Clavius Crater.’ This crater is one of the largest craters visible from Earth and is in the Moon’s southern hemisphere.

Casey Honniball is the lead author who published the results as part of her graduate thesis work at the University of Hawaii at M?noa. She is now a postdoctoral fellow at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland. Of the discovery, Honniball says, ‘Prior to the SOFIA observations, we knew there was some kind of hydration. But we didn’t know how much, if any, was actually water molecules – like we drink every day – or something more like drain cleaner. Without a thick atmosphere, water on the sunlit lunar surface should just be lost to space. Yet, somehow we’re seeing it. Something is generating the water, and something must be trapping it there.’ If you’d like to read the full paper, it has been published in Nature Astronomy.

Data gathered using SOFIA’s onboard camera shows water in Clavius Crater in concentrations of 100 to 412 parts per million, ‘roughly equivalent to a 12-ounce bottle of water trapped in a cubic meter of soil spread across the lunar surface.’ Paul Hertz, director of the Astrophysics Division in the Science Mission Directorate at NASA Headquarters says, ‘We had indications that H2O – the familiar water we know – might be present on the sunlit side of the Moon. Now we know it is there. This discovery challenges our understanding of the lunar surface and raises intriguing questions about resources relevant for deep space exploration.’

It’s not a lot of water, about 1% of the water found in the Sahara desert, but it’s a significant discovery. The work of the SOFIA team has uncovered new questions about how water is created and how it persists on the airless Moon. Further, water is a critical resource in deep space exploration. NASA’s Artemis program is keen to learn more about the presence of water on the Moon, and ideally, discover a way to access water in its pursuit of establishing a sustainable human presence on the Moon by 2030.

‘Water is a valuable resource, for both scientific purposes and for use by our explorers,’ said Jacob Bleacher, chief exploration scientist for NASA’s Human Exploration and Operations Mission Directorate.’ Bleacher continues, ‘If we can use the resources at the Moon, then we can carry less water and more equipment to help enable new scientific discoveries.’

As to how the water molecules ended up on the surface remains an unanswered question. One theory is that ‘Micrometeorites raining down on the lunar surface, carrying small amounts of water, could deposit the water on the lunar surface upon impact.’ Another theory involves a two-step process ‘whereby the Sun’s solar wind delivers hydrogen to the lunar surface and causes a chemical reaction with oxygen-baring minerals in the soil to create hydroxyl’ which is then transformed into water by radiation from micrometeorites.

SOFIA, which is a modified Boeing 747SP jetliner, typically focuses on very distant objects, such as black holes, galaxies and star clusters. In fact, the newly-published results are from SOFIA’s very first mission looking at the Moon. The team was essentially testing the tracking capabilities of its equipment, and this test produced a significant discovery. Additional flights will take a further look at the lunar surface.

SOFIA’s standard observations take place during a 10-hour overnight flight and captures images at mid- and far-infrared wavelengths. You can view some of the images it has captured by clicking here.

This is far from the first time NASA’s camera technology has produced meaningful, significant scientific discovery. Looking to the future, NASA’s Perseverance is currently about halfway to Mars, carrying a rover outfitted with a record-breaking 19 cameras. These cameras will capture incredibly detailed images of the Martian landscape.

High-resolution telescope images show Sun’s surface in ‘unprecedented detail’

The Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope has produced high-resolution images that show the Sun in ‘unprecedented detail,’ according to an announcement from the National Science Foundation (NSF). The telescope is located close to the summit of Maui’s Haleakala volcano. Each of the ‘cell-like structures’ visible in the images and video are approximately as large as Texas, according to NSF.

Understanding the Sun is an important step toward improving space weather forecasts, which will help humanity anticipate potentially disruptive events. The Inouye Solar Telescope is a key tool that will shed light on a number of the Sun’s mysteries. According to the NSF, having hours of advanced notice about potential space weather events will give officials time to put satellites and important infrastructure like power grids into safe mode.

The Inouye Solar Telescope features a massive 4m (13ft) mirror and more than 11km (7 miles) of piping as part of the cooling system that protects the telescope and its optics. The NSF explains that Inouye feature’s adaptive optics designed with an off-axis mirror placement that compensates for the blur that would otherwise result from the Earth’s atmosphere.

Astrophysicist and cosmologist Katie Mack chimed in on the above video, sharing a fun little anecdote about how the forces at work on the sun can be seen here on Earth in everyday life:

Ultimately, the Inouye Solar Telescope has the largest aperture of any solar telescope in the world, according to director Thomas Rimmele. The first half-decade of the telescope’s operation is expected to produce more solar data than humanity has generated in the past few hundred years.

Microsoft launches ARM-powered Studio Pro X, updates Surface Pro 7 with USB-C

Today, Microsoft released the details on its two new Surface Pro 2-in-1 PCs, the Surface Pro 7 and the Surface Pro X. The new devices might look similar on the outside, but take quite different approaches to mobile computing on the inside.

Surface Pro 7

The Surface Pro 7 remains largely unchanged from its predecessor on the, well, surface. Aside from the jump to USB-C (finally), the Surface Pro 7 is identical to the Surface Pro 6, including the 12.3-inch PixelSense touchscreen display (2,736 x 1,824, 267 ppi), Surface Type Keyboard and Surface Pen.

After years of Microsoft using its proprietary Surface Connector, the Surface Pro lineup now gets USB-C. It’s not Thunderbolt 3, but it’s a welcomed change nonetheless. Other ports include USB 3.0, Mini DisplayPort, Surface Connect and a Micro SD port.

Internally, the Surface Pro 7 is powered by Intel’s 10th generation processors with a number of options ranging from dual-core 1.2G GHz i3 processors to quad-core 1.3 GHz i7 processors. The Surface Pro 7 can max out with up to 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage, but the base model will include just 4GB of RAM and 128GB of storage.

On the wireless side of things, the Surface Pro 7 will include 802.11ax Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity. Microsoft claims a runtime of up to 10.5 hours on a single charge, although a specific Wh rating was not given for the battery.

The Surface Pro 7 starts at $ 749 for the base model—$ 150 less than the base level price for the Surface Pro 6. It’s available for pre-order today in black and silver and will ship starting October 22, 2019.

Surface Pro X

Microsoft is switching things up a bit with the Surface Pro X. Unlike the Surface Pro 7, which relies on Intel processors, the new Surface Pro X will use a custom ARM-based processor.

Microsoft says the processor is a co-developed version of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8cx processor called the Surface SQ1. Microsoft says the 7-watt processor can get upwards of ‘three times more performance per watt than the [Intel-driven] Surface Pro 6.’ Microsoft says the GPU inside the Surface Pro X was also co-developed with Qualcomm.

Other benefits of using an ARM-based processor is that the Surface Pro X will support LTE connectivity, offer up to 13 hours of battery life and will offer fast charging (0-80 percent with just an hour charge).

The device itself looks very similar to its Intel counterparts on the outside, with a few notable exceptions. Rather than a 12-inch PixelSense display, the Surface Pro X will offer a 13-inch display. The edges and corners of the Surface Pro X have also been rounded off compared to the Surface Pro 7.

The Surface Pro X is just 5.3mm at its thinnest point and weighs only 762g (1.68lbs). Microsoft says the Surface Pro X will run a full-fledged version of Windows 10, unlike the toned-down version the ARM-powered Surface RT used.

The Surface Pro X is available to pre-order today for $ 999 and will arrive at retailers on November 5th.

NASA’s InSight lander shares its first photos from the surface of Mars

It took six months and more than 300 million miles, but NASA’s InSight lander is now safe and sound on the surface of Mars and transmitting back the first bits of data to scientists here on Earth.

Among the first observations sent back to Earth from Mars is a collection of 1-megapixel photos captured with its onboard Instrument Deployment Camera (IDC). The images, which were transmitted by relaying the data to NASA’s Odyssey orbiter that’s currently orbiting Mars before being sent back down to NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, are the first of many that will be transmitted back to Earth during InSight’s two-year mission to study the interior of Mars.

The first publicly-shared photo sent back was one captured before the lens cap was removed from the camera, as evident from the dust covering the image.

The second image shared by NASA shows off a bit of the spacecraft itself with Elysium Planitia, a large plain on the equator of Mars that’s located in the Elysium and Aeolis quadrangles, in the background.

The landing site, which is approximately 370 miles north of where NASA’s Curiosity rover is rolling around the Martian surface, will now be scanned and covered with various scientific instruments as part of InSight’s mission to ‘probe the mysteries of Mars’s deep interior and help answer geophysical questions about the planet’s structure, composition and how it formed,’ as noted by The New York Times.

Microsoft unveils Surface Pro 6, Surface Laptop 2, and Surface Studio 2

At a small press event in New York yesterday, Microsoft unveiled its latest generation of Surface products: the Surface Studio 2, Surface Laptop 2, and the Surface Pro 6. The trio of devices offer upgrades over the previous models, with Microsoft boasting that the Surface Pro 6 is its “most powerful Surface Pro yet.” Similarly, the company claims the new Surface Studio 2 is the “most powerful” Surface device it offers.

The new Surface Pro 6 features the 8th-generation Intel Quad Core processor, boasting 67% faster speeds than the 5th-gen Surface Pro 2017 model. According to Microsoft, it worked to strike a balance between portability and performance, the end result being all-day battery life (up to 13.5 hours) combined with a high level of versatility.

The Surface Pro 6 features a 12.3-inch PixelSense touch display with a 2736 x 1824 267ppi resolution, SSD storage options ranging from 128GB to 1TB, Intel UHD Graphics 620, and 8GB/16GB RAM options. The model starts at $ 899 USD with an October 16 availability date for US customers.

The Surface Laptop 2 likewise offers the newest 8th-generation Intel Quad Core processor, that giving it a speed boost of 85% versus the original model. The Surface Laptop 2 features a 13.5-inch PixelSense touch display with a 2256 x 1504 201ppi resolution, as well as up to 14.5 hours of battery life. This model features the same RAM, storage, and graphics options as the Surface Pro 6.

The Surface Laptop 2 starts at $ 999 USD with an October 16 shipment date in the US.

Finally, Microsoft unveiled the Surface Studio 2, its “most powerful Surface ever.” This model sports next-gen Pascal graphics and a 50% GPU speed increase over the previous model. The 28-inch PixelSense touch display on the latest Studio model is 38% brighter than the original, bringing 22% greater contrast and a 4500 x 3000 192ppi resolution.

The Studio 2 offers Vivid, sRGB, and DCI-P3 color settings, support for up to two 4K Ultra HD 30Hz or one 4K UHD 60Hz external displays, and two NVIDIA graphics options: the GeForce GTX 1060 6GB and the GeForce GTX 1070 8GB. Other features include the 7th-generation Intel Core i7-7820HQ processor, support for Windows Hello authentication, and Xbox Wireless built-in.

The Surface Studio 2 starts at $ 3,499 USD with a November 15 shipment start date in the US.

According to Microsoft, preorders are available now in “select” markets; the products are expected to launch in other regions some time next year.

Microsoft unveils the Surface Hub 2: A huge collaborative 4K+ 50″ display

Microsoft has expanded its Surface product line with the new Surface Hub 2, a sequel to the original Surface Hub introduced in early 2015 (and which you probably never heard of).

The Surface Hub 2 is a large 50.5-inch 4K+ collaborative display with portrait/landscape modes and pen support. Microsoft says Surface Hub 2 was designed for teams “regardless of location,” enabling them to video chat, view content, write directly on the screen, and daisy-chain multiple displays together.

Surface Hub 2 brings together Office 365, Microsoft Teams and Whiteboard, and Windows 10. Up to four displays can be used together in either portrait or landscape mode; the user can also toggle between those modes by manually rotating the screen. In addition to wall mounts, Steelcase worked with Microsoft to create rolling stands for Surface Hub 2.

Microsoft confirms that Surface Hub 2 supports multi-touch and features 4K cameras that rotate with the device. Far-field microphone arrays and speakers enable communicating with remote team members, plus there’s support for multi-user sign in so that multiple people can be authenticated on the workspace.

The company decided to use an atypical 3:2 aspect ratio versus the more common 16:9; the exact resolution hasn’t been stated. Though many details are still missing, it’s clear that Surface Hub 2 is designed to help anyone who engages in collaborative—particularly visual—work. Content such as images can be immediately shared with others, for example, without a break in the workflow.

Microsoft plans to start testing Surface Hub 2 with “select commercial customers” some time this year, and the product will go on sale in 2019, though the price hasn’t been provided at this time. Interested potential buyers can sign up for updates on Microsoft’s Surface Hub 2 website.

Surface Beast: A photographer’s review of the Microsoft Surface Book 2

Over the last year I have been slowly migrating from Apple to Windows, and to be honest, breaking out of the walled gardens that I lived within (some known, some unknown) has not been easy, but it has been freeing.

I have to hand it to Apple, they made a system, an environment, that has been comfortable and creatively useful for many years; however, slowly the sparkle that was once held in such high regards by artists, has begun to dull. For me, there was one piece of hardware that remained from my Apple past, one that traveled with me to all my photoshoots and pre-production meetings, coffee shops and airport bars, studios and locations alike… my MacBook Pro.

When I began transitioning to Windows, I had made concessions. I thought at the time, that one of the few pieces of Apple hardware that would stay in my repertoire was the MBP. I had even decided to upgrade it to the newest one before the announcement, for I knew it would be cutting edge in the ways that other Apple products of the past had been. Then, to the horror of myself and many around, we watched as Apple gave us the new MacBook Pro, complete with… wait for it… the scroll bar (ready to suit all of my emoji needs).

That very day I bought a Microsoft Surface Book (the very one that I am typing this blog on) and never looked back. To be honest, I had intended to write a review of it for quite some time, however, that blog had been put on the backburner. What was striking about the original Surface Book was something I had a very hard time quantifying. While there were many things I fell in love with on it, such as the keyboard, and the detachable screen, the thing that won me over more than anything was how much it just worked.

Almost overnight I started to see my productivity rise as I was able to re-focus on the business side of advertising photography.

I was transporting my RAWs from set on the original Surface Book and would occasionally do minor edits on it in airports; however, the 100-megapixel files from the Hasselblad H6D-100cwere taxing on it once layers were added in Photoshop and file sizes surpassed the 5GB mark. Now I know that 5GB files are rarely opened on a laptop, but I had to test it out and did notice that the large files sizes were tough on the processor.

Then, about a month ago, the phone rang and it was Microsoft, wondering if I would like to hear about a new piece of equipment… the Surface Book 2. Previously they had let me try out their Surface Pro, which I liked, but still found myself using the Surface Book more. It was a no brainer and I quickly signed to have a loaner unit sent over immediately.

The Surface Book 2 arrived only days before I was to fly out for a campaign I was shooting in New York and New Jersey. I have always had a rule that any gear headed to set has to have a backup. No matter how different the backup is, there needs to be a safety net in case something unforeseen happens.

For the past year, I was traveling with the Surface Book in my carry on while the MacBook Pro was in my checked baggage. Perhaps there was part of me that was nervous about letting go of that laptop. However, the campaign on the East Coast would be the first one completely void of an Apple product, backups included.

All this had been planned before the Surface Book 2 arrived.

Then the FedEx delivery man arrived with the package that I had been sitting next to the door waiting for all day (on a side note, does FedEx know when I am anxiously awaiting a package and then decide to be late as hell delivering it?).

In the box was the clean white box containing a new Surface Book 2, and to my surprise… IT WAS THE 15” MODEL. While I knew it existed, I had told the gentleman on the phone to send out whatever was easiest and I didn’t want to hassle them with demands. To be honest, I had grown quite comfortable with the 13-inch model that I bought and didn’t think there was a need for the extra two inches… I was wrong.

As it turns out, the new model was completely rebuilt from the ground up, and I could tell it within the first hour of using it. The details were even more refined and it was even MORE comfortable to type on. A funny little side note… with the screen being completely detachable, you can pop it off and walk around set with a tablet bigger than any other on the market and, as it turns out, the only thing my clients talked about for hours.

Now at this point you are probably asking, “but Blair, how does it perform?” … please refer to the title of this blog.

I have NEVER used a laptop that felt as powerful as the Surface Book 2. The thing ate 100 megapixel files for lunch and came back for more. In a way, it felt as though my laptop had hooked up with my desktop and the resulting baby was the Beast. Credit where it is due, the phrase “Surface Beast” was actually coined by one of the art directors on the photoshoot when he compared it to his MacBook Pro (scroll bar and all) and decided we would preview the shoot on the Surface from there on out.

One area where there isn’t even a comparison to my previous Apple MBP life is when it comes to retouching. More specifically: while traveling. Even more specifically: sitting at the airport bar while the airline tells you the delay is because the plane can’t fly (FML).

The Surface Book 2 has an option to have a secondary processor in the keyboard base of the computer. What this means is that you can detach the screen, flip it around and fold it backwards and have a drawing tablet with near desktop power—it is completely insane. This feature, combined with the increasing inebriation, led to me laughing/near-cheering with the announcement that my flight was further delayed.

In three hours of sitting at the airport bar, I had finished key art retouching on one of the images from the campaign (this is huge) and rung up a healthy bar tab of Hendricks.

For me, the Surface Book 2 was the MacBook Pro that we had all wanted/expected from Apple—it just wears a different logo.

While other reviews will read off the spec sheets and talk about the 17 hour battery life and GX yadda yadda yadda processor, they sometimes forget that we (the creative professionals) use these as tools. What Microsoft has done with the Surface Book 2 is make a system void of gimmicks, because gimmicks don’t hold up in the working world. Our jobs will not benefit from being able to tap an emoji on a scroll bar… they will benefit from the ability to get work done.

As a photographer, it feels extremely odd to say this, but I sincerely feel that the Surface Book 2 is not only a strong contender for the laptop to own, but actually the clear cut choice of the computer to have on set.

These weeks with the Surface Beast have won my allegiances completely, and probably resulted in me making a third computer purchase for the year. However, it has also given me the confidence and comfort to say that the transition away from Apple will soon be complete.

Microsoft unveils updated Surface Book 2

Microsoft has announced the next generation of its Surface Book hybrid device, the Surface Book 2. Like its predecessor the Surface Book 2 is targeted at creative types and gamers. Microsoft says it offers “the power of a desktop, the versatility of a tablet, and the freedom of a light and thin laptop in one beautifully designed device.”

The new models come with Intel’s 8th generation Core processors and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 and 1060 GPUs. According to Microsoft that makes the Surface Book up to five times more powerful than the original model and twice as powerful as the latest MacBook Pro.

Despite powerful processing components the hybrid device offers all-day battery life, with up to 17 hours of video playback. The detachable 15″ PixelSense multi-touch display comes with a 3240 x 2160 resolution, the smaller 13″ variant still offers a very dense 3000 x 2000 pixel count but is lighter than its larger cousin (3.38lbs vs 4.2lbs).

In addition the new Surface Book 2 comes with a full array of ports, including USB-A, USB-C, and a SD card reader, reducing the need for dongles or other connection accessories. Consumer Reports no longer recommends Microsoft Surface devices: too unreliable

Yikes. Microsoft’s Surface devices—particularly the versatile Surface Pro tablet computers—have become popular among photographers. But if you’re considering taking the plunge on the new Surface Pro, you might want to consider this news from Consumer Reports. The respected car, appliance, and gadget tester just completed a survey of over 90,000 Surface owners, and what they found forced them to remove the ‘Recommended’ label from the Microsoft devices.

According to the report on CR, the breakage rate of Surface devices is ‘significantly worse’ than competing laptops and tablets. How much worse? According to its survey, CR says 25% of Surface owners will run into issues within the first 2 years of ownership. This finding applies to Surface Pro tablets, Surface Book laptops, and standard clamshell Surface laptops.

Common problems reported by survey participants include freezing, unexpectedly shutting down, and have issues with their touchscreens.

For its part, Microsoft disputes the report, claiming their own support numbers don’t track with the CR survey. “We don’t believe these findings accurately reflect Surface owners’ true experiences or capture the performance and reliability improvements made with every Surface generation,” said the company in a statement.
