Tamron has announced that it’s developing a new 28-300mm F/3.5-6.3 Di VC PZD superzoom lens for full frame SLRs. A near-twin of the co-announced 16-300mm F3.5-6.3 for APS-C, it’s distinguished from the current model by featuring an ultrasonic-type ‘Piezo Drive’ autofocus motor, splashproof construction and more-compact design with a 67mm filter thread. It’ll be made in Canon, Nikon and Sony mounts; pricing and availability are to be confirmed. Learn more

Tamron develops 16-300mm F3.5-6.3 superzoom for APS-C SLRs

Tamron has announced the development of an all-in-one ‘superzoom’ lens for APS-C SLRs with a huge 18.8x range. The 16-300mm F/3.5-6.3 Di II VC PZD Macro will offer an unusually wide angle view for its class (24-450mm equivalent), while also allowing close-up shooting with 0.34x magnification. It has an ultrasonic-type autofocus motor, splashproof construction and optical image stabilization. Pricing and availability are still to be announced. Learn more

Olympus announces Stylus SP-100 superzoom with dot-sight

Olympus has introduced the Stylus SP-100 superzoom, a camera with built-in dot-sight technology that enables you to easily track moving subjects while the lens is zoomed in. The dot-sight pops up just above the high-resolution electronic viewfinder.  Users can also choose the focus range used by the camera via a focus limit function. The SP-100 combines a 16MP BSI CMOS sensor with a 24-1200mm 50x optical zoom that captures 1080/60p HD video. Learn more

Fujifilm FinePix S1 is ‘world’s first’ weather-resistant superzoom

CES 2014: Amid a string of pre-CES compact announcements, Fujifilm unveils the FinePix S1, the ‘world’s first’ weather-resistant superzoom. It offers a 16 megapixel CMOS sensor and an F2.8-5.6, 24-1200mm equivalent zoom lens. With an articulating 3.0-inch LCD its specifications line up with the FinePix SL1000 in Fuji’s current lineup, though with a slightly faster lens and the addition of Wi-Fi connectivity. While not a fully ruggedized camera, the S1 offers protection against dust and rain exposure.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-LZ40 budget superzoom offers 42x optical zoom

CES 2014: Panasonic has unveiled the Lumix DMC-LZ40, a budget superzoom with an F3.0-6.5 22-924mm equivalent zoom lens. It has a 20 megapixel CCD sensor, fixed 3-inch 460k dot LCD, and can record video at 720/30p. The LZ40 is also equipped with optical image stabilization, 13 filter effect modes, and a lithium-ion battery rated to 320 shots.

Sigma releases updated 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 DC Macro OS HSM superzoom

CES 2014: Sigma has announced the 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 DC Macro OS HSM | C, a superzoom lens for APS-C / DX format SLRs. With a 28-300mm equivalent zoom range, it’s smaller and lighter than its predecessor, and has a shorter minimum focus distance. It will be available in Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Sigma, and Sony mounts; as usual the Pentax and Sony versions won’t have optical stabilisation. Availability is still to be confirmed but Sigma USA has set a recommended price of $ 399.

Samsung launches dual-grip, 60x WB2200F superzoom with Wi-Fi

CES 2014: Samsung has announced the WB2200F, a 60x superzoom camera with dual grip design. It offers a 20-1200mm equivalent, F2.8-5.9 zoom lens in front of a 1/2.3″-type 16MP BSI CMOS sensor. Beyond that, specifications are sketchy – it’s Wi-Fi equipped, with NFC to make pairing and sharing with compatible smart devices simpler. It also has a 3″, hVGA (usually 460k dot) LCD panel. The company promises long battery life and an electronic viewfinder, but in both cases gives no real detail.

Olympus Stylus 1 puts high-end superzoom features into OM-D body

Olympus has thrown its hat into the premium superzoom ring with the Stylus 1. It combines a larger-than-average 1/1.7″-type BSI-CMOS sensor with a 28-300mm equivalent, F2.8 zoom lens, high resolution EVF, ‘hybrid’ control ring, and Wi-Fi – and packs it all into a compact body that strongly resembles the OM-D EM-5. Other notable features include a built-in ND filter, tilting touchscreen LCD, in-camera Raw processing, and 1080p movie recording.

Ricoh announces HZ15 Europe-only compact superzoom

Ricoh has announced the Ricoh HZ15, a 15x compact superzoom that will only be sold in Europe. Though it isn’t sold under the Pentax name, it bears a striking resemblance to Optio compacts of recent years. It features a 16 megapixel sensor, 24-360mm equivalent zoom lens, 720p HD video and sensor-shift ‘SR’ shake reduction (terminology definitely borrowed from Pentax cameras). Sony launches Cyber-shot DSC-HX50V 30x compact superzoom

Sony has announced the Cyber-shot DSC-HX50V, a 30x compact superzoom camera that includes both Wi-Fi and GPS. It’s built around a 20.4MP 1/2.3″ BSI CMOS sensor, sitting behind a 24-720mm F3.5-6.3 lens. It includes 3-axis SuperSteady Shot image stabilization and can shoot at up to 10 frames per second for 10 frames. Its battery is rated at around 400 shots-per-charge and the Wi-Fi can be used for both file transfer and remote control. It will be available from May at a recommended price of $ 450.
