3 Teas for Diabetes To Lower Your Blood Sugar, Cholesterol and Blood Pressure

20 Mar

Tea for Obat Herbal? Yes, different teas offer a variety of health-promoting benefits, especially for people dealing with type 2 diabetes. These benefits include helping with weight loss, lowering high blood pressure, and protecting your body’s cells against the damage that high blood sugar levels can cause. Let’s take a closer look at some specifics:

1. Hibiscus tea. One of the common parts of type 2 diabetes is having high blood pressure or hypertension and high blood lipids (that is, fats including cholesterol and trigylcerides, as part of the whole picture of hyperlipidemia), in addition to problems with blood sugar regulation.

Hibiscus is an herb (plant) that several research studies have shown can lower high blood pressure and get high blood lipid levels down as well, including in type 2 diabetes. Other than rare allergic reactions, hibiscus is well-tolerated and seems to have no side-effects.

To get health benefits, you may need to drink multiple cups of well-steeped hibiscus tea each day, but isn’t that better than having to take a high dose of a drug to lower blood pressure? Most people on antihypertensive drugs report side effects that bring down their quality of life.

Doctors are not sure of all of the mechanisms by which hibiscus can help, but it probably includes the effects of substances called anthocyanins in the plant. These compounds can block the oxidation of “bad” LDL cholesterol, which is the damaging factor in developing heart and blood vessel disease.

2. Green tea. Green tea has been touted as a supposed miracle substance on its own. Using antioxidant effects, green tea may even protect the retina of the eye against the damage that high blood sugars can cause. But it does not stop there. Flavonols in green tea probably also help protect against the damage from LDL cholesterol on blood vessels.

Certain flavonols may also reduce insulin resistance, which is a core reason why type 2 diabetics cannot use glucose in their bloodstream effectively as fuel for their cells. Green tea may help somewhat with the high blood sugar, but perhaps not as much as other natural substances.

Many supplement makers claim that green tea extracts will be enough to cause major weight loss, but the research is much less clearcut. Still, the evidence shows that green tea can produce a small weight loss effect in people who are already overweight. The amount of weight loss, unfortunately, does not appear to be clinically meaningful. Still, the other health benefits of green tea make it a worthy addition to your daily regimen.

3. Fenugreek. If you want to get a bit more out there in your herbal tea choices, fenugreek’s claim to fame is an ability to lower high blood sugar levels better than some other natural supplements or herbs. Some studies suggest that this herb may help you reduce your HbA1C, which is the longer term measure of how well your blood sugar has been controlled for a period of about 3 months at a time.

Brown Sugar Kitchen, Great Chicken and Waffles in Oakland, California

24 Jul

Brown Sugar Kitchen, West Oakland
Chicken and waffles at Brown Sugar Kitchen

Brown Sugar Kitchen
2534 Mandela Parkway
Oakland, CA 94607

If you haven’t had breakfast/lunch at Brown Sugar Kitchen in West Oakland yet you are missing out. Having eaten here several times now I’ll make some observations.

Plan on waiting a long time to get a seat. Every time I’ve been to breakfast/lunch at Brown Sugar Kitchen I’ve had to wait at least 30 – 60 minutes — this is on Saturday or Sunday mornings though. I suspect weekday the wait is not as long. This is fine if you plan to make it a full weekend morning event, but be aware that you are in for a long wait time. I always love photographing around West Oakland, so I really don’t mind so much. I just put my name on the list and set a timer for how long I’m supposed to wait and go walk around and shoot some local street art. American Steel Studios is just down the street and there usually are interesting things to photograph around down there.

Of course the thing to order here is the chicken and waffles. The waffles are cornmeal waffles and taste delightful. They come with an apple cider based syrup but I recommend paying the $ 2 extra for real maple syrup. It’s worth it. The chicken is a buttermilk fried chicken and is equally delicious.

Most everything is good here, but other standouts for me include the mac and cheese (only available at noon or later), the breakfast potatoes, the pork hash and the cheesy grits.

Definitely order the coffee — it’s Bicycle Coffee and is one of the best tasting local brews I’ve had anywhere for breakfast. They also sell it by the bag if you want to take some to go.

Obviously with wait times being as long as there at Brown Sugar Kitchen it’s nice to know that they are in the process of opening up a second location (inside the old space where Pican was before they closed down in Uptown on Broadway). No word yet on the timing, but the sooner the better as far as I’m concerned.

Enjoy some photos of breakfast at Brown Sugar and some of the local West Oakland street art below.

Moving Miniature: Tiny Landscape Made of Sugar, Spices, Salt & Sand

11 May

[ By SA Rogers in Art & Sculpture & Craft. ]

Nothing about the hazy sunlight, languid motion of a tire swing, branches blowing in the breeze or puffy white steam pouring out of a factory chimney gives you any idea that the scene you’re looking at fits on a tabletop. Not only is this landscape a miniature – it’s made out of ordinary household objects and materials. Artist Matthew Albanese uses salt, sugar, flour, sticks, moss and other easily procured items to craft stunningly realistic tableaus, but for the first time, he’s incorporated movement, sharing a video.

‘The North Jersey Din’ is a moving version of a tree that Albanese has frequently used in a series of images called ‘A Tree in My Backyard.’ The attention to detail that went into this work is pretty incredible. In order for the miniatures to look realistic in the final images, Albanese employs a mix of techniques perfecting the scale, depth of field, white balance and lighting.

“This video is my first attempt at creating a moving miniature. Everything is designed for movement. The tree itself is made from brass tubes soldered together with springs at every joint. The leaves were die punched and machine cut, each threaded one by one. This video was filmed with just an iphone set to slow motion at 240fps. The audio is a set of recordings I made in my backyard capturing the sounds of the typical North Jersey Din.”

On his YouTube channel, Albanese also shared a video that captures four months of work in 33 seconds. ‘Making of a Promised Land’ is a time lapse of stills documenting the construction of another diorama, giving us an idea of just how much work goes into creating a single one of these photos.

Some of the scenes use materials you’d never expect, like faux fur standing in for the fields and sifted tile grout for mountains in ‘After the Storm,’ above. Among the items used in ‘Wildfire’ were cooked sugar, Scotch-Brite pot scrubbers, yellow glitter, clear garbage bags and party bulbs. Click on individual works on his website to see more behind-the-scenes images.

Taking Their Lumps: 12 Bitter Sweet Abandoned Sugar Mills

14 Sep

[ By Steve in Abandoned Places & Architecture. ]

Obesity epidemic notwithstanding, the world boasts more abandoned sugar mills than you can shake a peppermint stick at.

The former Delta Sugar Company mill in Clarksburg, Yolo County, California was constructed between 1934 and 1936… it took two years because the mill was transported by railroad, piece by piece, from its original location in Utah. By the early 1990s the mill became uneconomical to operate and in 1993 it was closed.

After lying abandoned for over 7 years, the “Old Sugar Mill” began to show some signs of life when some sections were upcycled into a grape-crushing and wine-tasting facility for several local wineries. Kudos to Flickr user Mark Brooks (cal_gecko), who exquisitely photo-documented the complex in late July of 2010.

Falling Like A Domino

The iconic Domino Sugar Refinery in Brooklyn, NYC’s Williamsburg neighborhood was built in 1882 on the site of an even earlier sugar mill that opened in 1856. At one point the plant employed over 4,000 workers and supplied half the sugar consumed in the United States. By the year 2000 when the factory closed, however, only 225 employees still worked there. The Domino Sugar Refinery was sold to developers in early 2014 and the wrecking ball began swinging in October.

Sugar Beaten

The Great Western Sugar Company mill in Longmont, Colorado closed in 1977 and – possibly due to the dearth of wineries in the region – has sat derelict and abandoned for well over thirty years.

The factory opened in 1903 and processed locally-grown sugar beets. Rumor has it the mill is haunted, perhaps by sweet-toothed ghosts. Flickr user Sheila Dee (sheiladeeisme) visited the decrepit factory in January of 2013.

American Paia

abandoned-sugar-mill-haiku-1

Paia, on the island of Maui, Hawaii may be “The World Capitol of Windsurfing” but the town of 2,668 (as of 2010) has another claim to fame: it’s where the once cutting-edge Haiku Sugar Mill processed sugar cane into brown sugar.

Opening in 1861 and powered by a steam engine, the mill only operated for 18 years and has sat abandoned for well over a century. These days its ruins are a popular wedding photography and reception venue. Flickr user Maria Caridad snapped some of the more obscure areas of the abandoned mill on June 28th of 2009.

BYOD – Sundance Docs Pt.3 – Big Boys Gone Bananas, Searching for Sugar Man, and Chasing Ice

09 Jan

EPISODE SYNOPSIS: Vlad and Ondi’s Sundance festival adventure continues with interviews with some of the most celebrated artists from this year’s festival. First we speak with Swedish director Fredrik Gertten, whose film “Big Boys Gone Bananas” was sued by Dole fruit for defamation. The difficulties of being a muckraker are clearly illuminated by Fredrick and his friend, Morgan Spurlock, who drops by for an impromptu endorsement. Then we talk with Malik Bendjelloul, the director of the highly anticipated “Searching for Sugar Man.” Malik shares his infectious enthusiasm with us and clearly regards the project as a labor of love that has managed to re-expose one of the great (nearly)over-looked musicians of the last 40 years, Rodriguez. John Cooper, the festival’s director, managed to swing by and talk with Ondi and Vlad for a bit of insight on the process of orchestrating and navigating the festival, and even shared some of his own personal favorites from this year’s crop. Finally, “Chasing Ice” film makers Jeff Orlowski and James Balog open up to BYOD about the intense undertaking that went into creating the year’s most talked about climate film. Far from being a lecture-type piece, “Chasing Ice” is a work that is as beautiful as it is informative. GUEST BIOS: Fredrik Gertten has been making a distinctive name for himself as a journalist and film maker. Having been involved in “The Corporation,” and now “Big Boys Gone Bananas,” he’s solidified his position as a muck raker
