Video: This DIY ‘$10,000 selfie stick’ holds a cinema camera and boom mic

04 May

Filmmaker, photographer, and self-professed coffee addict Peter McKinnon has created his own rendition of the infamous selfie stick… on steroids. Meet the $ 10,000 Selfie Stick. This fun, gimmicky DIY creation is McKinnon’s upgrade from the much-maligned (and for a time ubiquitous) pole used to hold a smartphone for self-portrait purposes.

In his video of the project, McKinnon heads to the local hardware store where he purchases bolts and other hardware, as well as a pair of goalie sticks for hockey. The sticks are combined together using tape, and the bolts are used to mount a $ 6,000 cinema camera and $ 400 boom mic (and three Canadian flags) onto the sticks.

The end result? A massive, heavy “selfie stick” that outshines anything you can get off the shelf, but has absolutely no practical use.

The JOBY GripTight PRO TelePod is a tripod… and a grip… and a selfie stick

06 Jan

Joining the GorillaPod Mobile Rig recently launched by JOBY comes another new product from the company: the GripTight PRO TelePod. This little telescoping tripod doubles as a lightweight extending pole and is designed primarily for professional video creators working with smartphones or small cameras, such as an action cam.

The JOBY GripTight PRO TelePod supports both landscape and portrait modes, as well as adjustable tilt for selfies. The tripod weighs 359g / 12.7oz and sports the company’s GripTight mount, as well as a hand grip, extended grip, and both elevated and tabletop tripod modes. A removable Bluetooth Impulse Remote Shutter enables users to capture shots remotely.

$ (document).ready(function() { SampleGalleryV2({“containerId”:”embeddedSampleGallery_7933591529″,”galleryId”:”7933591529″,”isEmbeddedWidget”:true,”selectedImageIndex”:0,”isMobile”:false}) });

In addition to the tilting tripod mount, the GripTight PRO TelePod includes a cold shoe PRO mount for accessories, and a Pin Joint mount for action cameras like GoPro. The tripod can be extended to lengths up to 79cm / 31in and is made from fiberglass-reinforced nylon plus stainless steel. The tripod’s legs have three positions and a maximum flattened leg span of 36cm / 14in.

The GripTight PRO TelePod is available from JOBY’s website now for $ 100 USD.

Flexible Tenikle ‘tripod’ uses suction cups to stick almost anywhere

28 Sep

A new ‘tripod’ like device called the Tenikle has just launched on Kickstarter, and it looks kind of like a Joby GorillaPod with a creative twist. As with the GorillaPod, Tenikle features three flexible arms that can be bent and reshaped for a variety of surfaces; unlike GorillaPod, Tenikle can stick to those same surfaces using the three powerful suction cups found on each arm.

Tenikle can be used by either directly attaching a small action camera (or smartphone) to a suction cup, screwing a camera mount into the device’s 1/4-20″ port, or attaching a camera directly to its 1/4-20″ screw adapter. The tripod is flexible enough to be rolled into a ball for heightened portability and strong enough to hold 8lbs / 3.6kg per suction cup.

When used dry, the creators claim that each cup is able to maintain strong suction for two or more weeks, while wet cups will maintain strong suction for four or more weeks. Both Stingray Gray and Coral colors are available, but Lagoon Blue and a special Kickstarter color will be added if the crowdfunding campaign hits stretch goals.

The team behind Tenikle plan to retail the tripod for $ 30, but is currently offering it to backers who pledge $ 25 or more. The campaign also includes pledge options such as a bundle with an adapter (and more) for $ 35 on up.

To find out more about the Tenikle or put down a pledge of your own, head over to the Kickstarter campaign by clicking here. This creative little tripod has already destroyed its initial funding goal, so it’s very likely this one will become a reality (although that’s never a guarantee…)

Voyager is a waterproof, smart LED light stick that you control with a phone

23 Jul

A new Indiegogo campaign is seeking funding for Voyager, a waterproof smart light stick made with LEDs, a diffuser tube, integrated battery, remote controller, and animation controller.

Voyager is the brainchild of Digital Sputnik, which says it packed all the features from its other DS products into this light stick. The company plans to offer Voyager in both 2ft / 61cm and 4ft / 123cm lengths, each version with slightly different specs.

The 2ft Voyager has a weight of 2.4lbs / 1.1kg, a resolution of 39 pixels, built-in 45Wh battery and 20 watt power draw. Compared to that, the larger 4ft Voyager has a 4.9lbs / 2.2kg weight, 83 pixels resolution, 90Wh battery, and 40 watt power draw. Both models allow photographers to use their own diffusion filters via two installation slots, and both can be used under water at depths of up to 2m / 6.6ft for up to 30 minutes at a time. A special version capable of greater depths will also be offered.

Unlike some competing lighting products, Digital Sputnik explains that Voyager utilizes LightGrading software that eliminates the need for technicians to manually adjust every light on a set, instead offering complete control from a smartphone. Assuming the Indiegogo campaign hits its $ 500,000 stretch goal, Digital Sputnik plans to add an integrated WiFi router to Voyager, enabling one unit to act as a router for other units on the set.

The Voyager campaign has thus far raised approximately $ 320,000 in funds, exceeding its $ 300,000 goal with 22 days remaining. Interested consumers can pledge at least $ 290 USD in exchange for a single 2ft Voyager unit or $ 440 USD for a single 4ft Voyager unit. Shipping to these backers is estimated to start in December 2017.

To learn more or put down a pledge of your own, head over to the Indiegogo campaign.
