Nikon invests in computer vision and deep learning startup ‘wrnch’

21 Jun

Nikon has announced a $ 7.5 million investment in Canadian computer vision and deep learning startup wrnch, Inc. Wrnch was founded in 2014 and ‘uses deep learning to develop and provide tools and software development kits (SDKs) that enable computers to see and understand human movement and activity.’

On its website the company says about itself it is ‘Teaching Cameras To Read Human Body Language.’

Nikon says the move is in line with its medium-term management plan which is designed to expand not only its business-to-consumer but also business-to-business imaging activities. The company is hoping to create synergies by combining resources with wrench and ultimately expand the range of its imaging business.

Nikon is aiming to enhance its automatic shooting solutions for the sports market by fusing its optical technologies, automatic tracking shooting technologies from its subsidiary Mark Roberts Motion Control Limited and wrnch’s pose estimation technologies.

In addition the company is looking into providing ‘new imaging experiences’ with technologies such as artificial intelligence. In the statement Nikon also says it is open to ‘making’ further use of its optical technologies and collaborating with companies that offer their own innovative solutions and technologies.’

Report: Apple discretely acquired mixed-reality startup Spektral for $30M

10 Oct

According to a report from Fortune, Apple discretely acquired Danish visual effects startup Spektral in December 2017.

Spektral was once named CloudCutout and focused on a cloud-based solution to masking a subject from the background of an photograph. Now, Spektral specializes in masking technology that uses machine learning to separate a subject in an image from the background in real-time on mobile devices. “Combining deep neural networks and spectral graph theory with the computing power of modern GPUs, our engine can process images and video from the camera in real-time (60 fps) directly on the device,” says Spektral on its website.

Neither Apple nor Spektral have confirmed the acquisition, but Fortune reports the deal was worth “more than $ 30 million.”

With no comment, we can’t say for sure what Apple intends to do with Spektral’s intellectual property and personnel, but Spektral Co-Founder and Chief Technical Officer Toke Jansen now lists “Manager, Computational Imaging” as his title at Apple on his LinkedIn profile. Combined with Apple’s ongoing efforts to beef up its augmented reality efforts in its apps — both its own and third-party — it’s safe to assume we’ll see the fruits of the acquisition in the near future, if we haven’t already seen parts of it.

Apple acquires AI startup that scores your photos’ framing, composition and more

03 Oct

Apple has reportedly acquired a small computer vision startup called Regaind, according to TechCrunch, who is citing ‘multiple sources.’ The acquisition falls onto our radar because of what Regaind’s technology is designed to do, namely: score photographs based on their composition, lighting, perspective, and other aesthetic qualities.

In other words, the company’s computer vision algorithms can tell how ‘good’ your photo is, insofar as such things can be analyzed objectively.

TechCrunch reports that the acquisition happened ‘earlier this year’, and while Apple hasn’t confirmed the news, the statement it sent to TechCrunch doesn’t deny it either. In fact, it’s about as close to ‘confirmation’ as Apple ever gets in such matters:

Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans.

A quick look at Regaind’s website will give you a look at the kind of information the company can ‘see’ in your photographs. This more professional portrait, for example, scores high in the areas of Aesthetics, Sharpness and Exposure, with multiple positive ‘Properties’ highlighted such as ‘Subject Well Framed’ and ‘Pleasant Blur.’

This birthday snapshot, however, scores much lower and suffers from ‘Dull Colors’ and an ‘Annoying Background.’

How Apple intends to use this technology (or already is?) may never be explicitly stated, but Regaind’s technology will no doubt make it into Apple’s Photos app on both macOS and iOS, and may even help future iterations of the iPhone camera prompt you to frame your subject better, seek better lighting, or get rid of that ‘Annoying Background’.

Your guess is as good as ours, but if you want to learn more about this company Apple almost certainly acquired, head over to the Regaind website by clicking here.

New startup ‘Binded’ aims to simplify copyright for photographers

28 May

How do you stop your images from being stolen? And if it happens, what can you do about it? Copyright disputes are among the most difficult issues that face working photographers, and in the US, registering copyright is time-consuming and expensive in itself.

Binded CEO Nathan Lands is pitching the service as an easier alternative to traditional means of registering copyright.

He has pledged that Binded will remain a free service, but one that creates a permanent record of copyright, which can be used in the event of a dispute.

‘Binded’ is a free service that aims to simplify the process of registering – and enforcing – copyright for photographers. When you upload an image to Binded, it creates a digital ‘fingerprint’ which serves as a permanent record that you own the copyright. This record is then written to the bitcoin blockchain. Binded will then monitor use of the image on the Internet, and automatically notify the copyright holder if it detects unauthorized use.

For now, uploading an image to Binded does not count as an official government registration of copyright in the US. According to CEO Nathan Lands, that’s something that he hopes will be added to the service over time.

Previously known as Blockai, the startup has just raised an additional $ 950,000 in funding from investors, bringing total funding to $ 1.5 million.

What do you think? Let us know in the comments.
