Nesting Instinct: 15 Super-Stackable & Space-Saving Designs

13 Oct

[ By Steph in Design & Furniture & Decor. ]

Wouldn’t it be nice if practically everything we need in life nested together perfectly, like a set of Russian Matryoshka dolls? Imagine how much easier it would be to rearrange your house, pack up and move or just fit all your belongings into a compact living space. These nesting and stacking designs were made to expand and retract, from knife sets to entire bedrooms worth of furniture.

Modern Nesting Knife Set

A set of four knives by designer Mia Schmallenbach, from a paring knife to a carving knife, nestle within each other to save space. The ‘Meeting’ collection seems to be sculpted out of a single solid piece of steel when it’s all packed together, and “the proportions are determined by the Fibonacci sequence.”

Matrioshka Nesting Storage Units

Six separate storage units nest within each other like Matrioshka dolls when empty in this set by TwentyTree which includes two wardrobes, three cabinets, two standalone drawers and two legs. The whole set is lightweight enough to pack up together tightly when moving.

Sliding Nest Shelf by Nendo

Adapt your shelving to whatever wall-space-width you have available in a particular room with the Nest Shelf by Nendo, which seems to magically double in size. Extend it halfway and you’ll get a grid-style layout with nine cubbies.

Russian Doll Set of Kitchen Gadgets

A sleek water bottle dubbed the Bin 8 breaks apart into a series of useful kitchen gadgets including a funnel, lemon juicer, egg masher, cheese grater, egg yolk separator, spice grater, measuring cup and lid grip for stubborn jars.

Entire Nesting Bedroom

It’s one thing for a set of knives or even cabinets to nest together neatly, but what about an entire bedroom? This clever set packs into an amazing 13 square feet, with a full-sized bed, corner couch, wardrobe, dining table, four stools and additional storage all fitting beneath a desk platform. The coffee table even expands upward into a dining table, and the stools and steps double as storage containers.

Transforming Tables: 16 Smart Space-Saving Surface Designs

13 Jan

[ By Steph in Design & Furniture & Decor. ]

Space Saving Tables by Resource Furniture (animation)

In increasingly small urban apartments where every inch counts, a piece of furniture that transforms from a coffee table to a dining table in seconds, hides a lot of storage or folds up to just one inch thick can open up a lot of usable space. These transforming table designs completely rethink the simple surface, sometimes using complex engineering to expand and contract.

Coffee to Dinner Tables by Ozzio Design

Anyone with a tiny studio apartment can appreciate the convenience of a piece of furniture that functions as a coffee table for most of the day, but raises up to dining level when needed. These two convertible tables by Ozzio look clean and modern, have adjustable heights and come in various colors and sizes for maximum adaptability.

Tree Ring Table Cuts Itself in Half

A table that resembles the cross-section of a tree trunk when compact and placed against a wall opens up to become fully round, a third leg swinging to the side to offer support. Designer Isariya Boon took inspiration from onion rings to create this hardwood and steel table with multiple personalities.

Flip Table Hides Six Stools

The wooden casing of the Flip coffee table opens up to become a three-sided dining table, the storage underneath transforming into six stools.

Kaleidoscopic Capstan Table Spins to Enlarge

Is this the world’s most highly-engineered dining table? The Fletcher Capstan features six wedge-shaped leaves that pull back to reveal a star shape that grows as the table expands from about 6.5 feet across to a maximum width of 30 feet. The process of transforming it is almost like a performance as the table opens to show off its inner components.

The Daily Shelter: Table to Child’s Fort

Only those who ‘know its secrets’ would ever guess that this ordinary-looking dining table by Ingrid Brandth doubles as a tiny house. Says the designer, “… it can be transformed into a shelter where one can hide from scary sounds, ghosts or family members. Just like a snail feels safe in its house.”

Fold Out My Space Play Area

Murphy beds and small table surfaces aren’t the only interior elements that can pop out of walls or freestanding cabinets to offer extra function when it’s needed. Entire kitchens, living rooms, bedrooms, offices, play areas and even balconies can be unfolded or pulled from nearly-flat surfaces to make small spaces more versatile, shifting their purpose altogether within minutes. See 12 more ultra-compact fold-out room systems.

Small living spaces rarely have enough room for an entire children’s play area, but fold-away solutions create one when it’s needed. My Space by Liya Mairson packs almost entirely flat when not in use, but pops up into a fun little private play space within minutes. Since it’s made of cardboard, it’s light enough for kids to set up themselves.

Ultra-Compact Stairs: 12 Next-Level Space-Saving Designs

16 Oct

[ By Steph in Design & Fixtures & Interiors. ]

Compact Stairs Charlie Girls 1

Clever integration of storage, dangerous-looking alternating treads and unusual wall-mounted designs enable these 12 compact staircases to avoid the problem of wasted space. Whether leading up to lofts in tiny houses and micro apartments or simply taking a smarter approach in larger spaces, these space-saving stairs look cool in addition to taking advantage of every square inch.

Stairs Packed with Storage

Compact Stairs Storage Drawers

Combining staircases with storage is nothing new in Japan, where carpenters have built drawers and cabinets into them for centuries. This project by architect Kotaro Anzai is a traditional ‘kaidan dans’ staircase cabinet made of linden plywood. Drawers open both out and to the side to make maximum use of the space.

Any architecture and design enthusiasts who watched HBO’s ‘Girls’ probably drooled over the clever built-ins in the fictional Bedford-Stuyvestant home of the character named Charlie. A lounge space is lofted over a semi-enclosed bed, and the stairs leading up to it also function as a closet and storage cabinet.

A small apartment in Camden feels far more spacious after a renovation that added a central volume enclosing the bathroom and lots of storage, with a lofted bed on top. The most clever part is the wall of built-in shelves that double as a staircase to get to the top.

Space-Saving Sleepers: Sofas Convert to Bunk Beds in Seconds

03 Oct

[ By WebUrbanist in Design & Furniture & Decor. ]

transforming fast quick sofa

Convertible couch beds are great if you are having a couple over to stay and have the space to fold out into, but these double-decker solutions is a great alternative for smaller apartments or multiple-but-single overnight guests. Here are three designs from different companies that show off the potential of this strategy (and give you a few color, size and style options to choose from, too).

couch sofa bunk beds

First, the Coupe deploys as fast as a regular transforming sofa, but expands vertically rather than horizontally to create a pair of beds stacked on top of one another. Based out of Greece, Proteas is a 50-year-old furniture company specializing in high-end designs. The Coupe comes in blue, red, green, brown or beige.

doc convertible sofa design

An alternative option that transforms slightly less quickly but unfolds along similar lines (and may be more robust due to its use of side supports) is the DOC.

doc red orange purplse

Designed by BonBon, a UK company, it likewise lifts up to reveal a ladder and second-level sleeping area for guests, starting as a sofa. The DOC comes in in red, purple or orange.

Finally, from Resource Furniture, “the Palazzo bunk bed system, an innovative design that transforms from a sofa to a bunk bed, provides multiple functions while maximizing space. The beds are available with low or high armrests and come equipped with wood-slatted bed springs and removable mattresses. The bunk bed system includes exceptional safety features, including a locking mechanism and a complete barrier around the top bunk.”

Fresh Spin: Rounded Space-Saving Clothes Drying Rack

03 Jan

[ By WebUrbanist in Design & Furniture & Decor. ]

space saver interior design

Hanging clothes out to dry is a design problem with a long history and many solutions, making it all the more rare to see something like this clever star-shaped approach that addresses the issue with such adeptness.

space interior clothes horse

In some Asian or European regions with more temperate climates, people string their clothes outside to dry, taking maximum advantage of warmth and airflow. Apartment and condo dwellers in colder places often have fewer options – Aaron Dunkerton of Queensland, Australia, but graduate of Kingston University, in the colder United Kingdom, can relate to both sets of conditions.

space unfolding clothes rack

The clever twelve-pointed-star design allows for maximum air circulation and hanging area with a minimum footprint when the drying rack is folded up and stored. A compact collection of aluminum rods strung between plywood supports are unfolded and latched to form an essentially circular shape with space in the middle – all part of a low-tech spin cycle that takes up less space in your closet, too.

space saving drying rack

space circular rack side

More about this unconventional clotheshorse: “The dimensions of my clothes horse are 56cm long, 32 wide and 23cm high when it is collapsed so it is much easier to store than a conventional clothes airer which are normally awkward sizes and hard to hide when not in use. When in use its dimensions are 56cm deep, 112cm wide and 112cm tall. The shape of my clothes horse when erect allows for good air circulation around the clothes, which will help them to dry faster.”

LiftBed & BedUp: 2 Space-Saving Beds Stored on Ceilings

07 Oct

[ By WebUrbanist in Design & Furniture & Decor. ]

lift bed up systems

In a bid to one-up the traditional fold-up Murphy bed, two companies are switching a wall-based storage approach for a ceiling-centric alternative. For those with higher spaces above but less square footage below, this design direction takes advantage of headroom while keeping clutter off floors and walls.

bedup hybrid space design

bedup ceiling design

BedUp is a French creation that solves multiple problems with folding wall beds. First, as alluded to above, it shifts the burden to storage vertically rather than horizontally.

bedup up down configurations

Second, however, the BedUp also can come to rest at various heights, leaving room for storage or full-sized furniture underneath even when deployed downward for use.

liftbed up and down

LiftBed is a German company offering an arguably sleeker-looking solution but it comes with a few catches. The cantilever that allows the bed to look like it is hovering, for instance, means more hidden mechanical and support elements are needed, in turn taking up more space.

up-and-down-beds

That said, the resulting LiftBed looks clean, minimal and incredibly well-integrated with its interior surroundings, so if aesthetics are your primary concern, this approach may be the best.

Swiss-Army Bathroom: Spine-Inspired Space-Saving Design

04 Sep

[ By WebUrbanist in Design & Fixtures & Interiors. ]

space saving bathroom design

Like a giant-sized Swiss Army knife, this narrow column unfolds to reveal everything your bathroom could need – a NASA-worthy, space-age modular design idea.

spiral unfolding bathroom design

A water-transmitting ‘spinal cord’ connects independently-rotating ‘vertabrae’, each of which includes a core function, from shower heads and cisterns above to storage in the middle and basins and toilets below.

The combined system mounts to the ceiling and floor to form single set of pivot points, providing stability for the spiraling functions in between and a single simple pair of inflows and outflows.

space bathroom design specs

From Design Odyssey: “The Vertebrae was designed by Paul Hernon and it basically incorporates a toilet, a sink, a water cistern and two showers into an 8 foot tall compact steel column that can be folded up when not in use.

As for the intention: “It was designed for those living in a small cramped apartment who might not have the room for a bathroom with all the amenities they would like. Each module is hand crafted from 3mm aluminum with polished hand welded seams.”

Edge Cases: 8 Space-Saving Design Ideas for Inside Corners

28 May

[ By WebUrbanist in Design & Furniture & Decor. ]

inside interior corner designs

Most home furnishings are made for flat surfaces, not for those uncomfortable edge conditions we call either ‘inside’ or ‘outside’ corners. The following designs do more than just address such conditions, they thrive on these traditionally-problematic challenges.

inside kitchen corner drawers

Kitchens are somewhat notorious when it comes to corners – cupboards bumping into another is one thing, but you also often lose the extra space contained in the corner itself. Not so with these crafty corner drawers that slide out at a 45-degree angle – designs by Blum and Heritage.

inside flat pack lamps

Floor lamps are another classic challenge- they are often rounded, and occupy more space in the corner than they could possible need. One solution is the Pop-Up corner light from WellWell, packed flat in an envelope with a cord, and folded out by the recipient to form a triangular, rectangular or round shape suited to 90-degree or even slightly-more-unusual angles.

inside corner pipe shelves

For storage considerations, pipe shelves like the ones shown above have been popping up for sale on Etsy for a while now – these are generally oriented toward inside corners, but could just as easily wrap out and around as well. And, of course, you can buy something already-made or go the do-it-yourself route instead.

inside outside corner shelf

But inside corners are only half of the equation – what about outside corners, where two walls meet as they push out into the room? This corner shelf by Martina Carpelan fills both functions with elegant simplicity – it can be flipped to wrap around an outside corner, or to tuck into an inside one.

Prototype to Reality: Super Space-Saving Bedroom Set

30 Jan

[ By Steph in Design & Furniture & Decor. ]

Matroshka All in One Furniture Set 1

Starting as a compact rectangle measuring just 13 square feet, the Matroshka all-in-one furniture set just continues to unfold, slide out and transform again and again until you think there can’t possibly be another function hidden inside it. And yet, somehow, there is. Named for the Russian nesting dolls, this space-saving furniture set includes bookshelves, a double bed, a corner couch, a desk, a wardrobe, a dining table, four stools and additional storage.

Matroshka All in One Furniture Set 2

The bed platform slides out from underneath the desk platform; take away a piece, and you’ve got the couch. A coffee table concealing four stools (with storage space inside, of course) also emerges from the bed platform, and rises to become a dining table. There’s also storage hidden under the stairs.

Matroshka All in One Furniture Set 3

The set incorporates virtually ever piece of furniture you need, even for entertaining guests, yet it could fit inside a fairly small room. There are enough seats for 12 people to sit around the table. This makes it an ideal choice for the micro apartments that are growing increasingly popular around the world.

Matroshka All in One Furniture Set 4

The Matroshka started out as a prototype, and thanks to investors, it’s now yours to own. Available from furniture dealers in Sweden and the UK, the Matroshka furniture set is made at a joinery workshop in Northern Sweden using birch plywood, oak veneer and Swedish woolen fabrics. It comes in your choice of left- or right-facing.
