Video: The crowdsourced winner of MKBHD’s blind smartphone test might surprise you

Popular tech personality Marques Brownlee has published his latest blind smartphone camera test, this one featuring many of the most popular flagship smartphones from 2019, including the iPhone 11 Pro, Google Pixel 4, Galaxy Note 10+, Huawei Mate 30 Pro, and OnePlus 7T Pro.

Each smartphone camera was used to capture a basic profile shot of Brownlee in a natural lighting environment in front of a partly cloudy blue sky. Assessments of the results came from public opinion; millions of Instagram and Twitter users were asked to choose which images they thought had the best quality.

Brownlee reveals the results from these polls in his 2019 blind smartphone camera test video above. The results from the first polling bracket are surprising: the One Plus 7T Pro smartphone, for example, beat the iPhone 11 Pro in the court of public opinion.

Both the Samsung Note 10+ and the Galaxy S10e took the final two bracket slots, with the Note 10+ ultimately crowned the victor.

Diveroid housing turns your smartphone into a dive computer and underwater camera

A Kickstarter campaign has already gathered over ten times is funding goal for a campaign that aims to produce a smartphone dive camera system that uses your smartphone to take pictures as well as display live data about the dive itself.

Diveroid is an underwater housing kit that comes with a mini dive computer and a app that turn the users smartphone into an underwater camera while using the phones screen to display dive information and maintain a log of the dive. The housing accepts multiple models of smartphone and uses a set of three physical buttons to control the phone. The app connects to the mini dive monitor and the smartphone and displays depth, time and temperature information as well as guiding the diver around precautions such as avoid decompression.

The app takes over the phone’s camera function and offers ultra-wide-angle, wide-angle, zoom and selfie shooting modes, as well as options to record video. A red-filter effect can also be applied in the app to offer real-time preview and recording that compensates for the loss of red at certain depths.

The housing is said to be good for depths of 60m and keeps a track of your dive so it can tell you at what depths each picture was taken. Images can be overlaid with data graphs and the whole dive can be shared as a logbook through the app. When you need to summon a boat the app can send a text message with your exact location.

Samsung code hints at 8K video for Galaxy S11 smartphone

The team at XDA Developers has been doing its thing again and discovered several hints at new camera features, that are likely to make an appearance on the Galaxy S11 next spring, while digging into the code of the latest version of the Samsung camera app.

Among the hidden software features there are special modes called Director’s View, Single Take Photo and Night Hyperlapse as well as vertical panoramas, custom filters, and more.

Most potential S11 buyers will likely be more interested in the hints at 8K video, though. There is evidence that suggests the upcoming Samsung flagship will be capable of recording 8K footage at 30 frames per second.

We’ve already heard rumors about Xiaomi working on an 8K smartphone and Samsung’s top-end chipsets have supported 8K video for a while now. The same is expected from Qualcomm’s upcoming Snapdragon 865 chipset, so it’s unlikely the new Samsung will be the only 8K-enabled phone in 2020.

The APK-code also reaffirmed the use of a 108MP Samsung ISOCELL sensor in the primary camera which had been rumored previously. We’ve already seen some devices launched with this sensor, for example the Xiaomi Mi Note 10 Pro, so the S11 launching with the same sensor, or an improved variant, would not be much of a surprise.

DJI developing app that will allow anyone to identify a drone with their smartphone

Chinese company DJI, the world’s leading drone manufacturer, is developing technology that will allow anyone with a WiFi-enabled smartphone to access information on unmanned aerial vehicles flying nearby.

The industry, in general, has been under scrutiny following high profile disruptions, including incidents at Gatwick and Heathrow airports that left flights grounded for days. In a bid for more transparency, DJI wants the public to be able to access basic info on a drone including its remote ID, altitude, speed, and location. The app will be available sometime in 2020, pending regulatory approval.

‘Remote ID functions as an electronic license plate for drones, allowing anyone who is curious about a drone in the sky to learn more about what it’s doing,’ said Brendan Schulman, DJI Vice President of Policy & Legal Affairs. ‘Around the world, aviation authorities have said remote ID is the key to allowing more complex drone use, and to solving concerns about safety and security. DJI’s direct drone-to-phone remote ID shows we’re committed to providing a solution in a way that is instantly usable worldwide without any additional infrastructure.’

The direct drone-to-phone remote ID system was first demoed to participants this week at a park in Montreal, Canada, during the International Civil Aviation Organization’s third annual Drone Enable conference. Smartphones from Samsung, Google, and Xiaomi received Wi-Fi Aware signals from DJI Mavic Air and DJI Mavic 2 Enterprise drones. The app, in its current form, is able to identify drones operating within a 1 kilometer (0.62 miles) range.

DJI currently holds over 70% of market share worldwide for consumer-grade drones. Global spending on consumer-grade unmanned aerial vehicles is expected to reach $ 12.3 billion in 2019, up from $ 9 billion the previous year, according to research firm IDC. As demand continues to increase, aviation regulators including the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) are pushing for a requirement on remote ID systems for drones. The FAA is on track to complete a mandatory proposal by year’s end, but rulemaking will take another year to complete. EASA will start imposing requirements by June 2020.

‘As more drones take to the skies every day, remote ID addresses the public’s interest in understanding what’s happening in the airspace,’ said Christian Struwe, DJI Policy Director, Europe. ‘DJI’s drone-to-phone implementation helps accomplish that by allowing drone pilots to broadcast a simple description of their flights, so anyone viewing the smartphone app can understand that they are inspecting a roof, surveying a construction site, or performing another beneficial task with a drone.’

Some remote pilots are already skeptical of allowing anyone to access information about their flights.

DJI developed AeroScope back in 2017 to address similar concerns. It’s a much more powerful system, offering a range of up to several miles away. While other drone manufacturers rejected the system, it’s being used by prisons, stadiums, airports, and even car dealerships to detect any unauthorized drone usage. Now, they want to eliminate the requirement for adding telecommunications equipment, subscribing to an ID service provider, connecting to a cell tower, or buying a data plan in order to fly safely and legally. DJI plans to make their latest drone-to-phone technology available to competing manufacturers, though a list hasn’t materialized yet.

Sony teases its next-generation Quad-Bayer smartphone sensor

The people at Sony’s image sensor division have posted a teaser video for an upcoming new smartphone image sensor, the IMX686, on the Chinese social media site Weibo. The new chip is the successor to the IMX586, which was one of the first 48MP Quad-Bayer sensors and has been deployed in several high-end smartphones.

Sony does not reveal the sensor resolution or other specifications in the video but based on rumors about phones that will supposedly use the sensor GSM Arena estimates it to be between 60 and 64MP.

The video reveals that the new sensor will be released in 2020 and shows a selection of still images captured in a variety of light conditions. The images are not full size, so it’s hard to make any judgements about image detail or noise, but they do look quite impressive in terms of exposure and dynamic range.

Given no phone is using the new sensor yet, Sony has used a prototype board connected to a computer to capture the samples. Have a look at the gallery above and check out the full video over on Weibo.

Xiaomi patent hints at future smartphone with pop-up selfie camera and 8K recording

A new patent belonging to Chinese company Xiaomi has surfaced revealing a new camera design that includes a pop-up selfie camera and a rear square zoom lens. The patent was first spotted by Dutch website Let’s Go Digital, which notes that the patent was recently registered by the Hague International Design System.

The Xiaomi patent covers a mobile phone that features a vertical array of cameras on the back of the handset; the top square lens is believed to possibly be a zoom lens, whereas the lower three circles potentially include another camera, an LED flash, and a third sensor of some type.

The pop-up illustration below shows how the company will handle offering a front-facing camera that doesn’t blemish the model’s bezel-less display.

The patent was granted on August 9, about a month before XDA Developers revealed the existence of a new Xiaomi smartphone featuring a camera with 5x optical zoom and 50x digital zoom. The discovery was made in the beta version of a Xiaomi software update, which itself came shortly before the official unveiling of its new Mi Note 10.

The Mi Note 10 features five cameras, including one with 50x digital zoom and one with 5x optical zoom. It’s unclear whether XDA’s discovery was ultimately pointing toward the Mi Note 10 or a future Xiaomi model, which may have been teased in the newly-published mobile phone patent.

The details uncovered in the software update indicated that the related Xiaomi phone would include 8K/30fps video recording capabilities. In that case, the combination of a newly granted patent and the beta software details make the case for there being another major Xiaomi smartphone in the pipeline, one that may be introduced in 2020.

Xiaomi teases Mi Note 10 penta-camera smartphone with Samsung’s new 108MP sensor

Xiaomi has officially teased its new Mi Note 10, an upcoming handset, first teased in early August, that packs Samsung’s 108MP camera sensor inside.

The Mi Note 10 is the first smartphone to offer a ‘penta camera,’ according to Xiaomi, which has also included a 12MP portrait camera and 5MP 50x zoom camera in the same module. The model also features two other cameras on the phone’s rear that are isolated from the other three sensors: a 20MP ultra-wide-angle camera and a tiny 2MP macro camera.

Xiaomi published an image (above) of the Mi Note 10 and its five cameras on Twitter this week, teasing the handset that will be detailed at an event later this month. The company has shared a couple of sample images captured with the 108MP camera on its Twitter account, as well:

Xiaomi also tweeted a brief video clip, indicating that it demonstrates the 5MP 50x zoom camera’s capabilities:

A pair of dual-LED flash modules are expected to accompany the five cameras. GMS Arena notes that the Mi Note 10 is a global version of the China-only Mi CC9 Pro model set to launch on November 5, which packs optical image stabilization for two of the cameras, as well as a 32MP front-facing selfie camera.

Other official details about the handset are lacking at this time, but based on a previous leak, the Mi Note 10 may feature a 6.47in Full HD+ OLED display. Xiaomi will fully detail the CC9 Pro variant on November 5 and the Mi Note 10 will be fully introduced on November 14.

Ultra-thin lenses could eliminate the need for smartphone camera bumps

Protruding camera bumps like on the iPhone 11 Pro Max could soon be a thing of the past.

Smartphone cameras have been improved a lot over recent years and while many improvements are down to software and image processing, hardware also plays a big part. Sensor sizes have been increased, lenses have become faster and optical tele lenses offer better zoom performance.

However, there’s also a drawback to these developments. Due to the laws of physics, faster and longer lenses, especially when combined with larger sensors, take up more space in a device. Combined with the device designers’ obsession with ultra-thin bodies this resulted in many devices coming with unsightly ‘camera bumps’ that protrude from otherwise perfectly smooth smartphone housings.

Those bumps could soon be a thing of the past, though. A research team at the University of Utah has developed a super-thin camera lens that would easily fit even in the thinnest smartphone body.

Current lenses are, depending on lens type and sensor size of the camera, a few millimeters thick. The new lens type is only a few microns thick, that’s about a thousand times thinner than current smartphone lenses. They are also one hundred times lighter.

The method the researchers have used to make this possible has been detailed in a research paper published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The new lenses are flat and consist of a large number of microstructures, each bending the light towards the sensor rather than just one single piece. As part of the project the team also developed a fabrication process using a new type of polymer and algorithms than can calculate the exact geometry required for these microstructures.

‘You can think of these microstructures as very small pixels of a lens,’ says Rajesh Menon, one of the co-authors of the project, ‘They’re not a lens by themselves but all working together to act as a lens.’

According to the scientists, the new lens type could also help give smartphones thermal imaging capabilities as well as design more lightweight military drones that could fly longer and lighter night vision cameras for soldiers in the field.

Review: DJI Osmo Mobile 3 smartphone gimbal

Over the past few years we’ve seen massive leaps in the quality of video produced by smartphones, allowing content creators to lean more heavily than ever on the devices in their pockets. Whether you’re a vlogger, journalist, budding cinematographer or just a parent who wants to post great videos on Facebook, chances are good that you’re part of this trend.

However, to get the best results, it still helps to use some third party tools. Enter the DJI Osmo Mobile 3, the third generation of DJI’s gimbal stabilization system for smartphones, which can help take your production quality up a level – particularly if you’re the kind of person who shoots while moving around. Let’s take a look at it in more detail.

The Osmo Mobile 3 is a drastic overhaul of the company’s predecessor, the Osmo Mobile 2. It joins a lineup of increasingly sophisticated smartphone gimbals from competitors like Freefly, Zhiyun, Gudsen, and others.

Design

The biggest update to the Osmo Mobile 3 is the overall physical layout. Though DJI took most of its design cues from the crowdfunded Snoppa Atom gimbal, the company fundamentally changed two aspects of the look and function of the device.

The first of these is that the Osmo Mobile 3 folds in on itself into a more compact, transportable size. It only uses one joint to achieve this, and all the gimbal’s other axes remain in place. The folded gimbal is slightly larger than an average person’s hand – if detached from the tripod base that DJI ships with the gimbal’s combo package. Once I unfolded the arm and figured out the orientation, I wasn’t bothered by anything related to this design change; it seems a useful update that makes the gimbal more compact.

The foldable design is made possible by the second, and perhaps more notable, change to the design: the sideways orientation of the phone-holding arm. DJI has placed this arm to the right of the device rather than behind it, bucking the typical design shared by most other smartphone gimbals on the market.

This change will likely require a bit of muscle-memory adjustment for gimbal operators used to the more standard back-arm design. The difference became most apparent for me when I tried to get shots close to the ground. I was used to leaning the gimbal forward and away from my body to achieve this, but that didn’t work with the Osmo Mobile 3, it must be leaned to the side for a similar effect.

A common complaint about the Osmo Mobile 2 was that the arm location blocked access to the phone’s headphone jack and charging port. The sideways arm on the Osmo Mobile 3 fixes those problems, now allowing access to both. A tradeoff, however, is that the phone needs to be balanced each time it’s placed in the gimbal. The Osmo Mobile 2’s use of counterweights meant that once the user balanced their mobile device, they could take it on and off without needing to adjust each time. The Osmo Mobile 3 doesn’t have this option, though balancing the phone along a single axis seemed to be a pretty quick process.

A new front trigger makes it easy to switch between sport modes and free the gimbal from responsiveness. The gimbal allows for both USB A and C attachments and can charge a mobile device while in use.

DJI also added a trigger to the back of the gimbal handle. This is a welcome addition. It allows access to useful functions in a place that makes ergonomic sense. Depending on whether it’s clicked or held down, the trigger enables ‘sport mode’, a setting that makes the gimbal more responsive to your movements. It can also pause the gimbal’s responsiveness entirely, helpful to maintain framing.

In use

The experience of using the Osmo Mobile 3 cannot be separated from its app, DJI Mimo. This app is also used on other DJI devices and it’s quite intuitive. It connects to the mobile device via Bluetooth, eliminating further cables. The Mimo app introduces manual camera controls to your phone, essential for creating more professional-looking content. It also allows for other creative camera modes.

DJI updated its Active Track software on the Osmo Mobile 3, which keeps the camera trained on a subject selected by the user. I’ve found two ways to effectively use this feature. In the first, the gimbal stays stationary and the camera pans and tilts to keep the subject in frame. This could be a useful feature for vloggers and self-filmers as they move at slow to medium speeds throughout the frame. This tracking does not do as well with fast-moving subjects however.

The second way I’ve found active track useful is by training the camera on a subject and moving the gimbal itself. This eliminates the need to track your subject with hand movements or the joystick and can introduce cinematic camera movement along multiple axes.

The Mimo app also offers panorama photo modes, gesture controls, timelapse modes, and an amazingly impressive hyperlapse feature. The combination of the Mimo app’s software stabilization with the Osmo Mobile 3 gimbal stabilization results in a final video that makes me seriously regret the many hours I’ve spent moving tripod legs inches at a time to create a similar effect.

Despite these cool features, there are a few elements of the Osmo Mobile 3 that have me particularly disgruntled. The first is the rounded base and forward-leaning handle. This makes it impossible to stand the gimbal up on a flat surface without using the tripod included in the more expensive combo package, perhaps an intentional move by DJI. The tripod does hold the gimbal upright, but it also adds significantly to the device’s footprint – one that’s marketed as small and portable.

Another annoyance I’ve found is that the Osmo Mobile 3 doesn’t allow full 360-degree rotation as the gimbal will reach an end point while spinning. There is also no option to toggle between the phone’s forward and rear-facing cameras while recording in the Mimo app, though this can perhaps be addressed in a future software update.

Is it right for you?

Overall, the Osmo Mobile 3 is a fun new upgrade to the Osmo Mobile line that can be useful for certain applications. To me, one of the most obvious uses would be live-streaming. With the addition of an external microphone, I foresee the Osmo Mobile 3 making waves in live news, conferences, vlogging, and more, where a phone is the easiest way to distribute high-quality, live video. DJI does need to fix some issues here, though, like not being able to switch between rear and forward cameras while recording within the Mimo app.

The gimbal would also be great for those who want to up the quality of their vacation or family home videos without shelling out for a new camera (and possibly new camera gimbal).

For smartphone gimbals like the Osmo Mobile 3 to get more popular with serious filmmakers, however, I think we still need a drastic shrinking of size. The biggest draw of shooting on a phone is that it’s always with you. Once everything is set up the Osmo Mobile 3 with a smartphone is only slightly smaller than its mirrorless equivalent, which generates an exponentially better image.

For the rest of us, however, the Osmo Mobile 3 is a fun device that provides effective stabilization and software tools, and one that doesn’t require you to be an expert filmmaker to use.

What we like:

  • Folding design significantly reduces size
  • Gimbal can charge mobile device
  • Impressive hyperlapse function
  • Active track works well for a product at this price point
  • Arm design allows microphone attachments (unlike Osmo Mobile 2)

What we’d like to see improved:

  • Gimbal needs to be balanced each time phone is attached
  • Base of gimbal doesn’t allow device to be set down without a tripod
  • Sideways gimbal arm orientation takes getting used to

New Smartphone Includes a 108-Megapixel Camera and Wraparound Display

These days, smartphone manufacturers seem to be in a race of their own: to include the most cameras with the most megapixels.

Apple has just released the iPhone 11 Pro, with its 3-camera setup. The Huawei P30 Pro packs a 40-megapixel sensor.

And now we have a new smartphone to evaluate:

The Xiaomi Mi Mix Alpha 5G, which includes some features that can only be described as “intriguing.”

First, the camera: The Mi Mix Alpha 5G boasts a single 108-megapixel camera.

Yes, you read that right:

108 megapixels, which is not only more megapixels than the leading Google, Apple, Samsung, and Huawei cameras combined, but is also more megapixels than you can find in any Canon or Nikon DSLR.

Now, so many megapixels can cause problems:

More megapixels in a small sensor results in lots of noise, especially when shooting at higher ISOs.

But Xiaomi has attempted to account for this problem, including a “tetracell” design that can combine four pixels into a single pixel element, in order to produce 27-megapixel photos when shooting in low light.

Will this truly keep noise levels down? I’ll admit that I’m skeptical. On the Mi Mix Alpha 5G’s 1/1.33 inch sensor, even 27 megapixels is a lot, and 12-megapixel smartphones (i.e., Apple’s latest iPhones) still struggle with noise.

There’s also a question of whether a 108-megapixel camera even makes sense. Do any smartphone photographers actually need this many megapixels? Sure, more megapixels are good for printing large or doing big crops, but 108-megapixels seems like overkill for such consumer-oriented tech.

Note that the same sensor will be included in Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy S11, though the Mi Mix Alpha 5G will be the first of the two to debut the camera.

The Mi Mix Alpha 5G also features a wacky “surround display,” which wraps completely around the smartphone.

While the concept is cool, it seems like the reality might be problematic. For one, a wraparound screen can’t use a case, which means the smartphone is much more likely to be broken when dropped or banged up.

And having a display on the back of the phone seems like it could cause privacy issues; if you’re using one side of the phone, will people be able to read your messages on the other?

That said, the Mi Mix Alpha 5G is definitely a unique smartphone with a powerful camera. So if you’re the type that likes more experimental technology, go for it! The Xiaomi Mi Mix will be available for around $ 2800 USD this December.
