The Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark II is an ambitious product that addresses some of the shortcomings of its predecessor by adding a 24-120mm F2.0-3.9 lens, faster AF system, tilting LCD, and 5.2 fps continuous shooting. Its 1.5″-type CMOS sensor also allows for image quality that should rival consumer or midrange interchangeable lens cameras. Adobe expands DNG format with inclusion of smaller, Lossy DNG option

Alongside its ACR and Lightroom updates, Adobe has extended the specifications of the DNG format, including the creation of a more compact, Lossy DNG option. The format has also been extended to respect in-camera cropping and allow for the inclusion of full HDR data and the non-image areas around merged panoramas. We spoke to Lightroom Product Manager, Tom Hogarty, about the changes made in v1.4 and the reasons behind them.

JPEGMini promises smaller files – PetaPixel shows Photoshop quality quirk

Technology company ICVT has developed an method to optimize JPEG compression. The company’s JPEGMini system analyses each image to assess the maximum compression that can be applied to an image without loss of perceptible quality. The company says you can expect a 50-80% reduction in filesize over a JPEG that hasn’t been intelligently optimized. At present the system can only be used via the company’s online service. Meanwhile, the news has prompted blog PetaPixel to reiterate the little-known quirk of Photoshop’s JPEG quality slider that means your images may be better saved at quality 6 than 7. (via PetaPixel)

E-mail photos managed in Windows Live Photo Gallery 2011, choosing to send them as bandwidth-hogging originals or reduced sizes.

Want to e-mail your friends, family, co-workers, etc. copies of some of your photos? It’s easy to do so via Windows Live Photo Gallery 2011. If desired, the software can resize photos smaller to save space and bandwidth. Note that this method requires you use client e-mail software, such as Microsoft Outlook.

1. Place checkmarks next to photos you wish to e-mail; hover over a photo for the checkbox to be available. As you check photos you will see them highlighted and bordered….
