New DAIN algorithm generates near-perfect slow-motion videos from ordinary footage

Researchers with Google, UC Merced and Shanghai Jiao Tong University have detailed the development of DAIN, a depth-aware video frame interpolation algorithm that can seamlessly generate slow-motion videos from existing content without introducing excessive noise and unwanted artifacts. The algorithm has been demonstrated in a number of videos, including historical footage boosted to 4K/60fps.

Rapidly advancing technologies have paved the way for high-resolution displays and videos; the result is a mass of lower-resolution content made for older display and video technologies that look increasingly poor on modern hardware. Remastering this content to a higher resolution and frame rate will improve the viewing experience, but would typically be a costly undertaking reserved only for the most popular media.

Artificial intelligence is a promising solution for updating older video content as evidenced by the growing number of fan-remastered movies and TV shows. Key to these efforts are algorithms trained to upscale and, when necessary, repair the individual frames of videos, which are recompiled into a higher-resolution ‘remaster.’

The newly detailed DAIN algorithm is different — rather than upscaling and repairing the individual frames in a video, this AI tool works by generating new frames and slotting them between the original frames, increasing the video’s FPS for smoother and, depending on how many frames are generated, slower-motion content.

This is a process called motion (video frame) interpolation, and it typically causes a drop in quality by adding unwanted noise and artifacts to the final videos. The DAIN algorithm presents a solution to this problem, offering motion interpolation to boost frames-per-second up to 480fps without introducing any readily noticeable artifacts.

The resulting content is high-quality and nearly visually identical to the source footage, but with the added smoothness that comes with increasing the frames-per-second to 60fps. In addition, DAIN has been demonstrated as capable of transforming ordinary 30/60fps footage into smooth slow-motion videos without choppiness or decreased quality.

According to the researchers, DAIN is ‘compact, efficient, and fully differentiable,’ offering results that perform ‘favorably against state-of-the-art frame interpolation methods on a wide variety of datasets.’ The technology has many potential uses, including recovering lost frames, improving content to be more visually appealing for viewers, generating slow-motion from regular footage and more.

Such technology is arguably necessary for preserving aging media in a useful way, making it possible for new generations of people to experience historical footage, old TV shows and movies, home videos and similar content using modern high-resolution displays. As well, the technology could be useful for content creators of all sorts, enabling them to salvage the footage they already have, improve the quality of old clips for use in documentaries and similar things.

The researchers explain on their project website:

Starting from the birth of photographing in the 18-th centuries, videos became important media to keep vivid memories of their age being captured. And it’s shown in varying forms including movies, animations, and vlogs. However, due to the limit of video technologies including sensor density, storage and compression, quite a lot of video contents in the past centuries remain at low quality.

Among those important metrics for video quality, the most important one is the temporal resolution measured in frame-per-second or fps for short. Higher-frame-rate videos bring about more immersive visual experience to users so that the reality of the captured content is perceived. Therefore, the demand to improve the low-frame-rate videos, particularly the 12fps old films, 5~12fps animations, pixel-arts and stop motions, 25~30 fps movies, 30fps video games, becomes more and more urgent.

Instagram currently testing slow-motion video and mute features

Instagram may be getting a few new features in the near future. As originally reported by The Verge, Twitter user Jane Manchun Wong (@wongmjane) managed to dig up a few interface changes that suggest new functionality is on the way.

Wong, a computer science major at UMass Dartmouth, came across the unreleased features by digging through the code in the Android version of the Instagram app. The two most significant features to be revealed are a new mute function, and the ability to shoot slow-motion video directly inside Instagram, shown below in screenshots from Wong’s Twitter.

The mute function would presumably work in the same way Twitter’s own mute button: effectively removing all content from a profile without the need to unfollow them. No need to unfollow that annoying friend who you want to keep up with, but whose photos you’re patently sick of.

Great way to save friendships and your sanity at the same time.

The slow-mo mode appears to be available only within the Stories section of Instagram, but it’s definitely possible we’ll see it as an integrated option within the standard video capture section as well. It’s unknown whether or not this would work with all devices or only on mobile devices that natively support slow-mo video capture.

In a statement to The Verge, an Instagram spokesperson said the company didn’t “have anything to share on this right now.” Not a confirmation, sure, but not a flat denial either—something Instagram has done when rumored features get out of hand.

These new features might never see the light of day, but it’s not unlike Instagram to randomly test new features with random users before making them public.

Video: Incredible 1,000fps slow-motion 4K lightning footage

If you need something to get your week off to an ‘epic’ start, look no further than DP Dustin Farrell’s incredible storm chasing video he just released yesterday. Captured mostly with a Phantom Flex4K slow-motion camera at 1,000fps, it’s a slow-motion masterpiece with lightning footage that left this writer’s jaw slack.

The video, titled Transient, is a compilation of Farrell’s best storm chasing shots from the 2017 season. Over the course of 30 days he says he drove over 20,000 miles—developing a deeper “respect and admiration for storm chasers” all the while. He also shared some technical details in the video’s description:

Most of the lightning footage was captured in uncompressed raw at 1000 frames per second with our Phantom Flex4K.

The Phantom Flex4K is a camera that must be post triggered while shooting high speed. This works out well for capturing lightning because the camera is always recording and rewriting to internal ram. As soon as a bolt appears in my view finder I trigger the camera to save what has been stored in the ram. Shooting at high frame rates requires a lot of light. Therefore, I mostly used my Zeiss Otus 28, 55, and 85mm lenses wide open at f1.4. In all, I captured 10TB of data during this production.

But don’t let the plethora of awesome footage fool you, this was an incredibly challenging project:

This is one of the most difficult projects I have ever attempted in my career […] Chasing storms with a Phantom Flex4K is stressful even when things are going well. There were at least 10 days where I returned home with my tail between my legs and nothing to show after a ten hour chase and 500 miles. There were also a couple of days that I drove home with an ear to ear smile that lasted for hours.

Slow-Motion Demolition: Expanding Agent Cracks Concrete from Within

Going forward, buildings may not need to go out with a bang if this “non-explosive cracking agent” takes off. The destructive action is quieter and potentially cleaner way to take out structures, break down old infrastructure or excavate building sites.

Betonamit is boasted to be a non-toxic powder that, when mixed with water and poured in to drilled holes, much like TNT, but instead of exploding, it “hardens and expands, exerting pressures of 12,000 psi. Reinforced concrete, boulders, and ledge are fractured overnight with no noise, vibration, or flyrock.” It’s not the only such stuff, but claims to be the first (other brands include the cleverly-named Crackamite).

Like some kind of anti-concrete, the dry powder is mixed with water — thus activated, it is poured into place. It is advertised for indoor use, as well as bridges, dams, limestone, boulders and concrete slabs. Seems like great stuff for large-scale artwork of some kind, but there don’t appear to be many such applications as yet.

Geoff Manaugh of BldgBlog wonders, though, what happens when something goes wrong. He writes: “I’m imagining a truck full of this stuff overturning on a crack-laden bridge somewhere, just an hour before a rainstorm begins, or a storage yard filled with crates of this stuff being ripped apart in the summer wind; a seemingly innocuous grey powder drifts out across an entire neighborhood for the next few hours, settling down into cracks on brick rooftops and stone facades, in sidewalks and roadbeds. Then the rains begin. The city crumbles. Weaponized demolition powder.”

Sony Xperia XZ Premium features 960 fps slow-motion and 4K display

Sony has today announced two new high-end Android smartphones, the Xperia XZ Premium and the Xperia XZs, which both use a 19MP 1/2.3 image sensor that is based on Sony’s recently announced 3-layer stack technology for smartphones. The camera, which Sony calls Motion Eye, also features a 25mm equivalent lens, F2.0 aperture, laser-assisted AF and an RGBC-IR sensor for natural color rendering. In video mode it can record 4K footage and comes with Sony’s very efficient SteadyShot 5-axis digital stabilization. Sony also says it has improved the panorama mode which is now capable of capturing higher resolution images. 

Thanks to the 3-layer sensor’s fast readout times the camera’s highlight feature is a 960 fps slow motion video mode that can record 720p footage. The new sensor technology also reduces the rolling shutter effect in both still images and video. The two new models also the same front camera which comes with a 13MP 1/3.06” sensor and 22mm equivalent focal length. 

While the camera looks impressive the Xperia XZ Premium offers the best of the best in all other departments as well. The Android 7.0 operating system is powered by Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 835 chipset and 4GB of RAM. Images can be viewed and composed on a 5.5” display with 4K resolution that also supports HDR technology. The phone is completely wrapped in Gorilla Glass 5 and waterproof (IP68). The 3,230mAh battery supports Quick Charge and the power button doubles as a fingerprint reader. 

The Xperia XZs comes with the same new camera as the XZ Premium but, with a 5.2″ 1080p screen and Snapdragon 820 processor, is otherwise more or less identical to the current XZ. The Xperia XZs will be available early April at approximately $ 700. The XZ Premium will launch later in spring. No pricing information on the higher-end model has been released yet.

Time Stands Still: Sublime Slow-Motion Subway Panoramas

A subway speeds by the platform, leaving most passengers with a fleeting impression and fast-fading memories of people glimpsed only for a moment, but not this crafty slow-motion documentarian. If you watch no other video today, this week or this year, make the time for at least one of those below.

In the above video excerpt, Adam Magyar captures frozen bystanders in fast succession (50 frames per second) at a Tokyo, Berlin and New York (Grand Central) train stations. His custom technology captures everything, and limited post-processing generates a kind of three-dimensional panoramic portrait of everyone in view. These finished products come both in the form of prints and videos, but the latter in particular are must-watch wonders.

“In Stainless, I scan rushing subway trains arriving to stations. The images record a number of tiny details of this moment. We see people staring towards their destinations standing at the doors framed by the sliding door windows. They are scrutinizing the uncertain future. Similarly to all my images, their main motivation is arrival. The darkness of the tunnels deep below the city turns these chemically clean mock-ups into fossils of our time. “

Magyar uses slit-scan and other technologies and techniques to, as writer Joshua Hammer describes, “bend conventional representations of time and space, stretching milliseconds into minutes, freezing moments with a resolution that the naked eye could never have perceived. His art evokes such variegated sources as Albert Einstein, Zen Buddhism, even the 1960s TV series The Twilight Zone.”

The extended film from Tokyo is shown above. It is truly mesmerizing to watch the most mundane behaviors caught in mid-act, be it a wet dog in mid-shake, creamer hanging over coffee mid-pour or a woman seen in mid-sneeze. It took Magyar years to perfect his craft – the worthy projects that led up to it (shown below) are essential to understanding how he achieved his current mastery.

If the process behind this uncanny effect seems impossibly complex: his signature un-moving montages came with a great deal of time and technological experimentation. This Stainless series is indeed just the latest in a long line of  experimental photo projects, starting with Squares (shown above) which features collections of people taken out of time and selected to force a grid-like order on passersby.
