While Waiting for Hyperloop, Sleep Through Long Drives on Cabin Buses

02 Sep

[ By SA Rogers in Technology & Vehicles & Mods. ]

Someday, we’ll supposedly be able to zoom from one city to the next in no time flat thanks to the Hyperloop, but that day is not today. Elon Musk’s high-speed transit system Hyperloop One has been successfully tested, and promises to cut the 400-mile trip between Los Angeles and San Francisco down to just 30 minutes, but it’ll take it a while to get off the ground. In the meantime, our options are still limited to air travel, personal vehicles, trains and buses. Buses are easily accessible and cheap, but they cost a whole lot of time and discomfort instead.

If you’ve ever taken an inter-city bus trip, you know how it goes. More often than not, you’re crammed in with dozens of other people, breathing stale air, hoping the person coughing next to you won’t get you sick. Even worse, inter-city bus travel is notoriously inefficient, requiring a lot of stops and ultimately taking a lot longer than it would if you were driving a car. Ever wish you could just block out your surroundings and sleep through it without drooling on somebody’s shoulder?

A new service called ‘Cabin’ aims to bridge the gap between bus travel and air travel with comfortable one-person sleeping pods, so you get your own private little area in which to stretch out and lay down during a long drive. The company bills itself as “the dreamiest way to travel between LA and SF,” acting as a hotel on wheels that transports you to your destination while you’re sleeping.

The company worked with hospitality architects to “completely reinvent the bus as we know it,” outfitting each pod with hotel-like amenities like free wi-fi, fresh bedding, complimentary water, tea, coffee, earplugs and even a melatonin supplement to help you fall asleep.

With a round-trip cost of $ 230 to get back and forth between San Francisco and LA, Cabin definitely isn’t the cheapest option; you can take a Bolt bus for just $ 50, and many airlines offer routes between the cities for as low as $ 69 each way. But we all know how much comfort airlines have sacrificed in recent years to keep their costs down, and an air trip with a pod this cozy would cost many times that amount. Plus, there’s no dealing with airports, hidden fees or traffic.

The future of inter-city travel will likely include self-driving vehicles and highway trains, but for now, this seems like a pretty cool option, especially for people who feel particularly stressed about flying. Cabin launched last year as SleepBus, and after a highly successful test run, raise $ 3.3 million to continue, with plans to expand to the East Coast.

The Art of Tech Living: Amsterdam’s Urban Campsite Lets You Sleep in Sculptures

25 Jul

[ By SA Rogers in Destinations & Sights & Travel. ]

Every year, Amsterdam’s Centrumeiland of Ijburg hosts ‘Urban Campsite,’ a public exhibition of sculptural habitats allowing local residents and tourists can spend the night in mobile sculptures. Designers, artists and architects are invited to create cool structures that are way more interesting than the average tent and install them at Science Park, a new area in Amsterdam-East. This year’s theme is ‘The Art of Tech-Living,’ envisioning how art can give science and technology a little boost of imagination.

“Did you ever feel the urge to sleep in a piece of art? Well, then this is your chance! UrbanCampsite is the place where a camping and unique artistic objects meet. You can stay in beautiful, special, sometimes crazy works of art furnished as a hotel room. The UrbanCampsite offers its guests all the amenities of a normal campsite … and quite a lot more than that!”

Prospective guests book the individual habitats on AirBnB, and each sculpture is fully furnished inside. These ‘sleeping objects’ typically have room for two, though a couple will fit children as well, and they range from 85-120 Euros per night. They’re often made of reclaimed materials like trampolines, shrink wrap, pallets and metallic insulation.

For 2017, the selection of sleeping objects includes a mini monastery with an oak sapling at its center, a giant camera obscura, a Dutch electric car from the 70s once used as a mobile post office, a stargazing lab, a 360-degree rotating research ship and a “luxury bungalow made of a sewer tube,” among others.

“Waiting for Water” by Stefanie Rittler and Sascha Henken, for example, bills itself as a humorous view on climate change, saying “The sea water level is constantly rising. Should we wait or change something?” In any case, you can enjoy the views from the upper-level bedroom while the exhibition is still safe on dry land.

Book and Bed Hostel: Your Dream to Sleep in a Library Came True

27 Dec

[ By SA Rogers in Boutique & Art Hotels & Travel. ]

book-and-bed-hostel-7

Every true bibliophile has gazed up at the seemingly endless shelves of books in a good bookstore or library and imagined gathering up a stack, finding a quiet nook and turning in for the night. In Japan (where else?) you can actually do just that in a library-themed hostel, though you might be too excited about your reading materials to get much sleep. The Book and Bed Hostel by Suppose Design Office features semi-private sleeping nooks built right into the bookshelves, so you can climb out and look for more books as often as you want.

book-and-bed-hostel-3

book-and-bed-hostel-6

The hostel has two locations – Tokyo and Kyoto – with rates starting at just $ 40 (4,445 yen) per night. In the true spirit of a hostel, everything is set up dorm style with shared bathrooms and nothing but curtains separating you from your neighbors, but considering the theme of the place, you probably don’t care. Book and Bed isn’t really about enjoying privacy or getting a good night’s sleep.

book-and-bed-hostel-1

The Tokyo location features over 1,700 titles to choose from, stacked on floor-to-ceiling shelves. Climb the library ladders to reach the highest ones, and check out the featured books that have been hung from the ceiling as decor. Each sleeping nook is fitted with a backlight and an outlet, and there’s wifi, though you’ll probably be too busy reading to use it.

book-and-bed-hostel-2

The Kyoto hostel is located just steps from many popular local attractions, like the Yasaka Shrine and the Nanzenji Temple. There’s a special selection of Kyoto-centric books in both English and Japanese. Both hostels offer striped robes and totes reading ‘Have a Book Day’ for purchase as souvenirs. You can see more photos on the Book and Bed Tokyo Instagram account.

book-and-bed-hostel-4

“Book and Bed is an ‘accommodation bookshop.’ The perfect setting for a good nights sleep is something you will not find here. There are no comfortable mattresses, fluffy pillows nor lightweight and warm down duvets. What we do offer is an experience while reading a book (or comic book.) An experience shared by everyone at least once: the blissful ‘instant of falling asleep.’ It is already 2am but you think just a little more… with heavy drooping eye lids you continue reading only to realize you have fallen asleep.”

book-and-bed-hostel-9

“Dozing off obliviously during your treasured pastime is the finest ‘moment of sleep,’ don’t you agree?”

Sleep with Sharks: 10 of the World’s Most Extreme AirBNBs

31 Mar

[ By Steph in Boutique & Art Hotels & Travel. ]

airbnb shark suite

After a long day of traveling and sightseeing, how does a relaxing evening sleeping in a shark tank, a subterranean vault filled with human skeletons or the trunk of a Tesla sound? Some of the weirdest and most unique listings to ever be offered on AirBNB.com include actual museums, stunning ruins, a three-dimensional recreation of a Van Gogh painting, a hippie paradise and a hotel where giraffes stick their necks through the windows to steal your breakfast.

Glass Shark Suite, Paris

It’s probably best if you don’t have a shark phobia prior to renting this AirBNB room at the Paris Aquarium, since the marine predators are virtually all you’ll be able to see all night. Just large enough for a circular bed for two guests, this glass room suspended inside the tank provides 360 degree views of 35 live sharks. Guests will get an intimate education on the lives of the animals from fervid and underwater photographer Fred Boyle, and can even enjoy their meals from another vantage point outside the aquarium. It’s open for just three nights in April and will then serve as an observation area for biologists.

Paris Catacombs

You’d have to be fairly free of superstitions to get a decent night’s sleep right beside a wall of human remains, but for those brave enough, a night in the bowels of Paris is surely an unforgettable experience. On Halloween night, some lucky AirBNB contest winners got to take a tour of the city’s famous catacombs, enjoy a gourmet meal and a private concert “in some of the most incredible acoustics under the earth,” listen to a storyteller’s frightening tales about this subterranean hall of the dead, and then become the only living people to wake up there.

Van Gogh’s Bedroom, Chicago

Step inside a Van Gogh painting, lay down in his slightly irregular bed and gaze at the walls and floors faithfully recreated in his own iconic brush strokes with this AirBNB offering from the Art Institute of Chicago. Recreating the Dutch artist’s famous ‘Bedroom,’ the exhibit rents for just $ 10 per night and aims to drum up interest in the original painting, which has long been an icon of the museum’s permanent collection. The nightly rate includes tickets to the museum.

Mirrored House, Pittsburgh

You kind of have to enjoy gazing at your own reflection to enjoy staying in this curious mirrored funhouse of a rental listing in the Pittsburgh suburb of Fox Chapel. Created by an artist, the house is like a giant habitable disco ball, with mirrors adhered to both the exterior and interior surfaces. The dining room is the crown jewel of the space, with a central aquarium reflected in all of the wall-mounted mirrors and chandeliers. The rental appears to no longer be available.

House of Collections, Brooklyn

Like one big cabinet of curiosities, Brooklyn’s House of Collections features artfully arranged and carefully chosen objects on every imaginable surface, from patterns of rusted farm tools on the living room wall to cow bones hung beside historic local treasures. There are at least seventy house plants, exotic textiles, books, musical instruments, antique furniture and almost any kind of tchotchke you can imagine. Though it may look like an antique store, it’s a private residence, rented out occasionally to lucky AirBNB guests.

Anti-Gravity Hotel: Sleep Suspended in Levitating Space Suit

26 May

[ By Steph in Boutique & Art Hotels & Travel. ]

antigravity sleep 1

If various aches and pains or a childhood fantasy about being an astronaut make you wish you could sleep in antigravity, here’s a way to make it happen – sort of. A group of architecture students at the AA Visiting School Slovenia have designed a ‘levitating’ suit suspended from ropes so you can find out what it feels like to sleep in ‘3D.’

antigravity sleep 2

The suit is essentially a bunch of mini hammocks that support individual parts of the body, including the feet, knees, hips, arms and neck. Pulleys allow the wearer to adjust the ropes to distribute their weight in whatever way feels most comfortable, so you can recreate your favorite sleeping position in mid-air.

antigravity hotel 5

It’s part of a project called KSEVT Hotel, which invites visitors to spend a night at the Cultural Centre of European Space Technologies in rural Slovenia. The experience is meant to replicate what it feels like to sleep in space, minus the straps that astronauts use to keep themselves from bumping into things in the night.

antigravity hotel 6

“The site-specific added value to the KSEVT exhibition is the experience of levitation in an environment of gravity. The team’s field of research was the transition from conventional 2D sleeping to the experience of 3D sleeping.”

It’s an intriguing idea, and can probably be quite comfortable if you adjust all the ropes just right, but you’d better hope you don’t have to go to the bathroom once you’re strapped in.

Domestic Adventure Update: Sleep, Quiet & Relaxation

21 Aug

Sleep, quiet and relaxation are the three things I have not had in my month long blogging hiatus. As you can tell from the photo above that is because we have a new member of our household. Grant, my second son, arrived on the scene May 27th right between 2 holidays and 3 (nuclear) family birthdays (all with in 6 weeks of each other). Needless to say my wife and I have been elated that Grant is here, but to be honest we’ve been pretty tired.

Ah good times.

As you’d imagine I’m incredibly excited to introduce Grant to the natural world and photography as I have been with Blake. It’s an amazing process to hear the raw interpretation of our world from a child’s perspective. Not only do these innocent and candid interpretations of the world ground you, they help you see the world in new ways. Such experiences are a great reminder for myself to keep pushing for new visual and interpretive perspectives.

Put To Sleep: 12 Sad Abandoned Pet Shops & Vet Clinics

20 Jan

[ By Steve in Abandoned Places & Architecture. ]

abandoned veterinary clinic
Put away the cat-carrier and make your own Cone of Shame; these abandoned veterinary clinics and shuttered pet shops are closed fur good.

Jersey Snore

Ocean County Veterinary Clinic Lakewood NJ abandoned(images via: Lost Destinations)

Ocean County Veterinary Clinic in Lakewood, New Jersey is a pretty grim place, even for New Jersey, though one would have to agree things are looking up now that the pet clinic has closed and the animals have gone. Whispered rumors of poor care by clinic managers and unconfirmed anecdotes of euthanized animal carcasses found in the clinic’s dumpsters dogged (sorry) the facility for years.

Ocean County Veterinary Clinic Lakewood NJ abandoned(images via: Lost Destinations)

The labyrinth of claustrophobic chain link cages in the back supports long-running allegations the clinic had contracted with local animal control departments to “warehouse” stray dogs and cats, most of which never escaped a presumably grim fate. “There is a heavy, doomed feeling within these cages;” reports urban explorer “Shady” from Lost Destinations, “even the very trees seems to forbid entrance as they stretch their thorny limbs across the entry gate.” Scarier than Snooki!

Roo The Day

Small Animal Clinic UQ Brisbane closed(image via: ABC News)

Time’s up for the Small Animal Clinic at the University of Queensland’s St Lucia campus, which has closed after serving area pet-owners for over half a century. While the decision to shut down the St Lucia clinic and transfer its staff and functions to the newer, larger Gratton clinic may be sound financially, Brisbane residents who brought roughly 9,000 small pets to the red brick building annually are, er, hopping mad.

The Doctor Is OUT

Lake Veterinary Hospital Oakland sign(images via: Beth Budwig and KGO-TV)

The Lake Veterinary Hospital in Oakland had been patching up pets for the better part of 40 years when suddenly, without any warning, it shut its doors. The owner was nowhere to be found, leaving pet-owners not only at a loss but facing the prospect of their pets’ medical records being lost as well. Thanks to Michael Finney of KGO-TV’s “7 On Your Side”, however, the story has a happy ending: the vet was located and clients were assured their pets’ records are safe and will be sent to them. No telling what lies in store for the clinic and its awesome retro sign, though.

Denver Broken

closed Capitol Hill Animal Care Center Denver(images via: 1031 Net Lease and JustDial)

The former Capitol Hill Animal Care Center only closed recently but it still exudes an ominous “Frankenstein’s Castle” vibe all too commonly found with abandoned, closed and disused businesses. Located in Denver, Colorado, the clinic evidently wasn’t a hit with owners of dogs, cats, birds and (wait for it)… broncos.

Sleep with the Fishes: Floating Underwater Hotel Room

26 Nov

[ By Steph in Global & Travel & Places. ]

Underwater Hotel Room Manta Resort 1

Watch eerily illuminated sea creatures swim past your windows at night as you fall asleep on your own ‘private floating island,’ an underwater hotel room at the Manta Resort. This special getaway is a two-story floating wooden structure with a submerged bedroom, a surface-level deck that lets you dive into the sea, and a rooftop lounge area.

Underwater Hotel Room Manta Resort 2

Underwater Hotel Room Manta Resort 5

Located off the eastern coast of Africa near Pemba Island, the artificial floating island has virtually everything you’d want from a resort – as long as you’re okay with near-total seclusion. That means no other guests, but also no waiters or other attendees. You might be okay with that, given the scenery – but no worries, you can always take a boat back to the main resort to enjoy the restaurant and spa.

Underwater Hotel Room Manta Resort 4

Designed by Swedish firm Genberg Underwater Hotels, the three-story structure is envisioned as a private getaway for a couple. It’s anchored to the sea floor from its four corners so it won’t float away, bobbing gently on the sea. Guests can enjoy views of all sorts of marine life, and coral reefs. After dark they’re still visible thanks to underwater spotlights beneath each window.
