New H.266/VVC video compression standard will reduce video sizes by up to 50%

A new video encoding standard that reduces video file sizes by 50% is set to become usable by the end of the year, allowing high-resolution footage to be saved with smaller file sizes and to be transmitted in less time. H.266/VVC (Versatile Video Coding) follows on from the current H.265 compression standard and was developed by Fraunhofer HHI alongside companies such as Sony, Apple, Intel, Huawei, Microsoft, Qualcomm and Ericsson.

The idea of the new standard is to compress files so that 4K and 8K footage become easier and quicker to move, particularly over slower network connections. The effect should be that all video footage takes up less space on a memory card and can be copied over to a hard disk in less time, all while using less computer power. That footage can also be posted online, to external storage, sent to a third party or streamed more quickly/easily due to the reduced file size.

The new H.266 standard will also allow systems or locations with poor data rates to receive larger files more quickly, so movies, for example, will buffer less and play more smoothly. Mobile devices will also be able to send higher resolution files, or longer clips, without using so much data.

Fraunhofer says that ‘H.266/VVC offers faster video transmission for equal perceptual quality,’ so we shouldn’t see the difference between files compressed by H.266 and those compressed using H.265. H.265 also halved file sizes when it was introduced, as did the H.264 standard that came before that — and which is still in use today.

The new standard requires new chips to make the most of it, and the press release states that they are already in production and that Fraunhofer will release the software to allow the standard to be used in the autumn of this year. For more information see the Fraunhofer website.

Fraunhofer HHI is proud to present the new state-of-the-art in global video coding: H.266/VVC brings video transmission to new speed

After devoting several years to its research and standardization, Fraunhofer HHI (together with partners from industry including Apple, Ericsson, Intel, Huawei, Microsoft, Qualcomm, and Sony) is celebrating the release and official adoption of the new global video coding standard H.266/Versatile Video Coding (VVC). This new standard offers improved compression, which reduces data requirements by around 50% of the bit rate relative to the previous standard H.265/High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) without compromising visual quality. In other words, H.266/VVC offers faster video transmission for equal perceptual quality. Overall, H.266/VVC provides efficient transmission and storage of all video resolutions from SD to HD up to 4K and 8K, while supporting high dynamic range video and omnidirectional 360° video.

Today, compressed video data make up 80% of global Internet traffic. H.266/VVC represents the pinnacle of (at least) four generations of international standards for video coding. The previous standards H.264/Advanced Video Coding (AVC) and H.265/HEVC, which were produced with substantial contributions from Fraunhofer HHI, remain active in more than 10 billion end devices, processing over 90% of the total global volume of video bits. Both previous standards were also recognized by collectively three Emmy Engineering Awards for contributing substantially to the progress of television technology.

Through a reduction of data requirements, H.266/VVC makes video transmission in mobile networks (where data capacity is limited) more efficient. For instance, the previous standard H.265/HEVC requires ca. 10 gigabytes of data to transmit a 90-min UHD video. With this new technology, only 5 gigabytes of data are required to achieve the same quality. Because H.266/VVC was developed with ultra-high-resolution video content in mind, the new standard is particularly beneficial when streaming 4K or 8K videos on a flat screen TV. Furthermore, H.266/VVC is ideal for all types of moving images: from high-resolution 360° video panoramas to screen sharing contents.

“After dedicating almost three years toward this standard, we are proud to have been instrumental in developing H.266/VVC,” says Benjamin Bross, head of the Video Coding Systems group at Fraunhofer HHI and editor of the +500-page standard specification of H.266/VVC. “Because of the quantum leap in coding efficiency offered by H.266/VVC, the use of video will increase further worldwide. Moreover, the increased versatility of H.266/VVC makes its use more attractive for a broader range of applications related to the transmission and storage of video.”

“If you consider that Fraunhofer HHI already played a key role in the development of the previous video coding standards H.264/AVC and H.265/HEVC, then we are happy with the fact that more than 50% of the bits on the Internet are generated by a Fraunhofer HHI technology,” adds Dr. Detlev Marpe, head of the Video Coding and Analytics department at Fraunhofer HHI.

A uniform and transparent licensing model based on the FRAND principle (i.e., fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory) is planned to be established for the use of standard essential patents related to H.266/VVC. For this purpose, the Media Coding Industry Forum (MC-IF) was founded. In addition to Fraunhofer Society, the MC-IF now includes +30 companies and organizations. The new chips required for the use of H.266/VVC, such as those in mobile devices, are currently being designed. Dr. Thomas Schierl, head of the Video Coding and Analytics department at Fraunhofer HHI, announced “this autumn Fraunhofer HHI will publish the first software (for both encoder and decoder) to support H.266/VVC.”

H&Y Revoring variable step-up rings allow filters to fit multiple lens thread sizes

Filter manufacturer H&Y has launched a series of new step-up adapter rings that have variable thread sizes to allow users to fit a single screw-in filter to multiple different sized lenses. Using a sprung iris the thread size of the Revoring can be altered to fit a range of lens sizes via a rotating ring on the adapter. The idea is a single screw-in filter can be switched between different lenses very quickly without the need for changing adapter rings.

There are four sizes of Revoring to cover lens threads of 37-49mm, 46-62mm, 67-82mm and 82-95mm. The 37-49mm ring, for example, takes a 52mm filter. Once attached to the Revoring that filter can be switched between lenses that use filter thread sizes of 37mm to 49mm, by twisting the revolving ring to adjust the size of the adapter’s thread.

Twisting the adjustable ring closes the iris to its smallest size, and releasing it allows the thread to expand to fit the lens in use. The adapter holds in place immediately, but can be screwed in for extra security. To take the adapter off the lens the ring is turned to again contract the iris so it comes free of the lens.

Each of the sizes comes as a stand-alone ring for users to attach their own filters, or a second version is available that has H&Y’s variable ND filter with a circular polariser already built-in. The variable ND ranges from ND 3-1000 covering light reductions of 1.5-10 stops.

I’ve had couple of the rings for a while and thought a video would explain them a little better.

H&Y says the Revorings are made from architectural building-grade 6063 aluminum giving them strength while maintaining a light weight – the 67-82mm ring weighs 64g/2.25oz – and that the metal is protected with a matte black anodised coating.
Revorings are being launched via a Kickstarter campaign that runs until August 8th.

A HARD stop at the MAX point shown on the filter ring, restricting the movement of the VND filter beyond the maximum 10 stops (ND1000).
An additional guide, fitted to the VND frame filter, meaning you can control the VND and CPL positions more easily.
New laser markings will be introduced to the outer edge of the VND ring. These new markings will be calculated and applied based on the maximum focal distance before any crossfade appears, helping image makers set up their shot more efficiently. There will be a live chart on the H&Y website offering guidance with a variety of lenses and sensors.

X-Rite announces new ColorChecker sizes

Color calibration specialist X-Rite has announced a range of new sizes in its line of ColorChecker reference targets for photographers and videographers, including Nano, Mini, XL and MEGA.

With the expansion of the line-up X-Rite is now aiming to target a much larger spectrum of photographic applications than previously. Here is an overview of the new options:

ColorChecker Classic Nano: 24mm x 40mm (1 x 1.75″) – for macro or close up photography.
ColorChecker Classic Mini: 6.4 x 11cm (2.5 x 4.25″) – for archival photography
ColorChecker Classic XL: 37 x 53cm (21 x 14.75″) – for photographers working in large studios, doing long distance photography or camera/lighting testing.
ColorChecker Classic Mega: 100 x 152cm (40 x 60″) – for photographers working on large sets and doing extreme distance photography or camera/lighting testing.
ColorChecker Video Mega: 100 x 152cm (40 x 60″) – for filmmakers working on large sets and doing extreme distance filmmaking or camera/lighting testing.

All ColorChecker Classic targets show an array of 24 natural object, chromatic, primary and greyscale colors, arranged in four rows. During capture or when editing it can be used to create custom DNG or ICC camera profiles, color grade video footage or visually compare, measure and analyze differences in color reproduction.

CFexpress 2.0 cards will be offered in three sizes with different maximum speeds

In February, the CompactFlash Association announced the CFexpress 2.0 specification, a follow-up to the CFexpress 1.0 specification first revealed in late 2016. The new 2.0 spec update brings two more form factors to CFexpress, both targeting industrial and professional imaging markets, according to the association. The two new form factors join the original, ushering in Type A, Type B and Type C cards.

CFexpress 2.0 Type A cards are the smallest of the three form factors at 20mm x 28mm x 2.8mm, which is a bit smaller than a standard SD card. The Type A cards feature a Gen3 PCIe interface with 1 lane and a maximum theoretical performance of 1000MB/s.

The Type B card has the same dimensions as XQD cards at 38.5mm x 29.8mm x 3.8mm; this variety has a Gen3, 2 lanes interface and max theoretical performance of 2000MB/s. Finally, the Type C form factor is largest at 54mm x 74mm x 4.8mm with a Gen3, 4 lanes interface and max theoretical performance of 4000MB/s.

The different form factors offer manufacturers flexibility in choosing which card type their devices will utilize, such as the small card with a priority on compact size instead of transfer speeds, or the largest card with a focus on speed at the expense of compactness. Japanese publication DC.Watch shared images of these different card form factors earlier this month.

According to the CF Association, the CFexpress 2.0 specification is designed for a variety of needs, including imaging, which specifically includes DSLRs, mirrorless cameras, drone cameras and video cameras.

Ultra large and custom film sizes now on order from Ilford Photo

UK black and white film manufacturer Harman Technology has announced that its annual large format and custom film ordering scheme is open from now until May 26th. The scheme allows users of cameras that take unusual film formats to order certain Ilford emulsions within a set window so the company can set aside factory time to bulk-produce formats it wouldn’t otherwise be able to make financially viable.

As was the case last year Ilford FP4 Plus, HP5 Plus and Delta 100 emulsions will be available to order in sheet sizes from 2.25 x 3.25in to 20 x 24in. Rolls are also on offer for 127 film and formats 9cm wide, as well as 50 foot rolls of 20in film. Not all emulsions can be ordered in all formats but most of the more popular formats are covered. 120 backing paper can be ordered in 100ft lengths.

Harman says there are minimum order quantities that need to be reached before manufacturing can go ahead, but in the case of the sheet films usually a single order of a box of 25 sheets is enough. Roll films though need between 2 and 15 orders to make them practical to cut.

The company lists retailers across the world with which orders can be placed and the sizes/emulsions on offer. Prices will need to be checked with those retailers. Shipping to distributors will begin in August 2017. For more information see the Ilford Photo website.

A clever domestic design to eliminate ungainly collections of measuring spoons and cups, Polygons is an ingenious cooking multi-tool that measures different amounts on demand and packs flat when not in use.

The key to the device is its flexibility, and not just in terms of measuring. Its creators claim it can flex up to 100,000 times without breaking thanks to TPR-based hinges.

Each tool (a teaspoon and tablespoon variant) has four different measuring configurations and can also be used to spread things in its flat formation.

The creators claim it works equally well with runny and viscous liquids as well as powders, then wash easily to avoid stains and smells.

If the material science side of the project holds it could have a lot more applications as well for everyday-use objects that need to bend without extraneous hinging mechanisms (which add bulk to a product as well as a point of failure and cracks for dirt and debris).

Ilford Photo announces ordering program for unusual sizes of sheet film

UK film manufacturer Harman Technologies has announced that orders are being taken for unusual sheet and roll film sizes in its annual program for supplying low volume and custom-sized Ilford Photo materials for vintage and large format camera owners. Rather than making odd sizes on the chance that they will sell, the company uses it Ultra Large Format (ULF) program to collect orders from the public and institutions through specified retailers and sets aside time especially to produce film to fit old cameras.

The company offers these odd sizes in Ilford FP4 Plus, HP5 Plus and Delta 100 Professional black and white emulsions. Sheet materials as large as 20 x 24in. and as small as 2.25 x 3.25in. are on offer, as well as roll film in 46mm (127 film) and 70mm widths. Sheet sized film is also available in rolls for users to cut themselves, and can be ordered in widths of up to 20in (x 50ft). Some sizes have no minimum order volumes and can be ordered as a single box.

Heliopan ships Vario ND variable filters in sizes from 55 to 82mm

Heliopan has started shipping variants of its Vario ND variable neutral density filters in sizes from 55 to 82mm, according to its US distributor, HP Marketing. The filters provide 1–6.6EV filtration and include numerical markings to allow you to precisely dial-in the desired density. The filters feature brass construction and are shallow enough to be used with lenses as wide as 16mm equivalent.

Windows Internet Explorer 9 – Allow Different Zoom Levels and Text Sizes

Internet Explorer 9 keeps your current zoom level and text size when opening up new tabs or windows. If you prefer to have different settings, make this tweak.

To make it easier to read small text or view intricate pictures inside Windows Internet Explorer 9, especially useful for some older users, you can adjust the zoom level and / or text size. For example, pressing Ctrl+Shift++ zooms in (hold down the Ctrl, Shift, and + keys), pressing Ctrl+Shift+- (hold down the Ctrl, Shift, and – keys) zooms out, or Ctrl+Shift+0 (hold down the Ctrl, Shift, and zero) resets to the default zoom (100%).

When you make such a change, Internet Explorer 9 assumes that you want to keep these settings whenever opening a new tab or window. This way if you have difficulty reading web pages and always need Internet Explorer to zoom in, you will not have to do so manually each time. …
