Speed Up Your Photography Site

Speed Up Your Photography Site

I recently started paying more attention to my site’s loading speed since that is a very important aspect of Google’s algorithm. Google wants to provide a great user experience and a slow site will be penalised.  As a photographer I have lots of images and many images are really big – I really like my full screen slide show very much.

So what to do if you’re a WordPress user with lot’s and lot’s of big images?  Below is a workflow and some of the free tools and WordPress plugins I’m using to load faster and rank higher.

4 Easy And Free Steps to Speed Up Your Site And Rank Higher #photography

 – Start by testing your site loading speed. I use Pingdom.com’s Free Loading Speed Test Tool. Make a note of the  and/or rank and refer to this later on to evaluate your success.

– Trash un-necessary plugins that might cause your site to load slower.  Just today I trashed 3 plugins that didn’t contribute anything, on the contrary, they just bloated my site and made it load slower. Take a long hard look and weigh the benefits vs. the cost.  Kill your darlings.

– Optimize and re-size your images. It might seem contradictory to first tell you to trash plugins and in the next step tell you to install a new one, but believe me – this will really help. I’m using the free WP plugin EWWW Image Optimiser. There are a number of other ones as well but I really like the bulk optimise option of EWWW. it took me about 15 minutes to optimise and re-size all of my images on my site – Sweet!

– Cloudflare – speed up your site.  This free tool allows You to dramatically speed up and at the same time protect Your site by distributing your content around the world –  so it’s closer to your visitors = speeding up your site.

Having done all the steps above I saw an instant improvement – going from a load time of about 9 seconds (which means that my site was in the slowest 10%) to a load time of about 4-5 seconds. This puts my site in the fastest 40% – Not bad for a very image heavy site!

Laser Precision: 3D Site Scan Enables Architectural Intervention

09 Mar

[ By WebUrbanist in Architecture & Houses & Residential. ]

3d view

Incredibly accurate laser-scanning technology, precise down to a hundredth of a millimeter, has helped British architects not only plan a new structure but also secure permission from a local planning commission. Their proposed Rock House, now approved, preserves both natural and architectural features currently on a government-protected site.

3d view preservation

Cornish firm Poynton Bradbury Wynter Cole (PBWC) Architects enlisted CESurveys to lidar scan the existing property, located in a conservation area. Their scanner system fires tens of thousands of lasers per second to get precise distance readings on complex terrain. Compared to traditional surveying and site-mapping strategies, this approach is much faster, cheaper and more effective.

3d building model

3d architectural addition

The results are translated into a three-dimensional model that can be manipulated, showing the effects of site changes or interventions. Scans from around sites are stitched together to form a complete picture.

3d scan section

3d scan side

3d scan elevation

The resulting models have an array of benefits, including the ability to show approving parties what the impacts of additions and remodels might be to a given property. They also helped the architects, in this case, maintain key lines of site, such as views out to the sea, and limit the cost of revisiting the site frequently to document additional features. Slices of the scans also make it easy to generate sections and elevations, sliced directly out of the models.

3d model lidar laser

Applications of lidar scanning goes well beyond architecture, too, including the ability to document historic infrastructure and preserve 3D models of fresh crime scenes.

Sony Semiconductor site gives glimpse of next-generation sensors

18 Apr

A 20MP Four Thirds sensor and a Stacked CMOS design for enthusiast compacts are likely to be just two of the sensors we can expect to see in cameras over the coming months. Sony’s semiconductor division has made these products public with the creation of a new website, which lists some of the chips it offers to potential buyers. Alongside many familiar-sounding sensors are examples we’ve yet to see in any cameras. Read more

17 May, 2014 – Rockhopper Workshops Web Site Is Launched

18 May

For the last few months we have been busy on a number of projects at Luminous-Landscape.  One of these was getting LuLa workshops up and running.  Luminous-Landscape pioneered the all inclusive workshop years ago and was one of the first workshops ever offered in Iceland. In January this year Kevin Raber joined the LuLa team and with his experience in running the PODAS Workshops for Phase One he has once again launched a top notch workshop series for Luminous-Landscape. Today Luminous-Landscape officially launches its workshop site Rockhopper Workshops.  Read about it HERE.

Michael and I (Kevin) will be in Buffalo June 5-8 as part of the Silo City Workshop.  This workshop conducted by Mark Maio will be photographing one of Michael’s and my favorite things; abandoned buildings.  In this case these will be the abandoned Buffalo Childs Street grain elevators.  If you are free and want to have a great few days shooting these amazing structures inside and out then go to the Silo City Web Page and register today.  There are only a few spots left.  Another bonus is Capture Integration will have a rep there with Leica Gear as well as Medium format digital gear if you are so inclined to try this gear out.  Hope to see you there.

Site update: two new forums

02 Oct

shared:DPRlogo.png

Just a quick update on a couple of new forums we’ve added over the weekend. The first is Feedback and Suggestions, a place for your questions, feedback and suggestions for the DPReview team (both technical and editorial). We hope this will be a more efficient and more effective method than the feedback form / email system we had previously, and will ensure we don’t miss bugs, suggestions and feedback that until now has been spread over dozens of forums. The second new forum is Photographic Science and Technology: a home for those wishing to discuss  advanced technical matters related to imaging science outside the brand-specific forums. It’s also intended to be the place for less technically-minded readers to pose questions of our community’s smartest eggheads.

Annual Road Trip and Major Site Revisions

05 Aug

By the time you read this I'll be on vacation with the family. We're taking a road trip north into New England and Canada, where none of us have ever been before. (The above is in Maine, on the way to Prospect Harbor on Saturday night.)

That doesn't mean Strobist is closed. Today we're announcing a completely updated Lighting 101, among other things…

Korean site publishes sample images from Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 DC HSM

23 Apr

Screen_Shot_2013-04-22_at_11.20.35_AM.png

Korean website lcap.tistory.com has published what it claims are sample images from the new Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM lens, purporting to show its performance in a range of different shooting situations, on both a Canon EOS 600D and 5D Mark III. We doubt very much that the site had Sigma’s permission to publish the images from what is almost certain to be a pre-production lens, but if you’re curious, you can click through for a link to the original ‘preview’ at lcap.tistory.com.
