Invisible Graffiti: Uncanny 3D Overpass Art Simulates Transparency

3D graffiti artist Milane Ramsi has combined two challenging types of urban art into a single installation, making a concrete pillar appear to vanish while producing three-dimensional lettering.

The installation wraps a concrete support post for a highway overpass in Karlovy Vary, a city in the Czech Republic. The work spells the artist’s name in reverse, appearing to pierce the pillar thanks to a combination of colors overlaid on a simulated background. The purple gives a general shape to the work while the yellow adds apparent depth and dimension.

His other works range from tags to 3D-looking works that appear to pop off the wall, but this particular piece combines elements that span graffiti types and styles.

In invisibility aspect is reminiscent of another clever work of roadside art, a wrapped tree designed to look like it has been cut across the middle, leaving the top half portion of the trunk and branches to seemingly float on air. And below: Tree Line by photographer Zander Olsen.

TwoEyes VR stereoscopic camera simulates human vision

21 Jan

Another VR camera has launched on Kickstarter, but this one does things a little differently: TwoEyes VR features two horizontally-oriented cameras spaced 65mm apart that record footage in a stereoscopic arrangement. The resulting 3D video simulates the way someone would see the subject with their own eyes.

TwoEyes VR features two F2.0 180-degree lenses spaced 65mm apart, which is said to be the average distance between human eyes. The two cameras (CMOS 1/2.3” sensors), when used together, can record 3D videos in both 180 and 360 degrees, while recording with just one camera results in 360-degree non-3D footage. The camera also supports generating red-cyan 3D footage.

Content is stored to an internal 128GB drive, while other camera features including a 4K image processor, 2,000mAh battery, Bluetooth 4.1, dual-band WiFi, WiFi Direct, and a gyro sensor. The related Android and iOS mobile apps offer users live video previews from the camera, two-button shooting controls, and a post-processing tool for generating either 3D, VR, or 360 videos.

The team behind TwoEyes is seeking funding on Kickstarter, where they have raised more than double their $ 40,000 goal with 36 days remaining in the campaign. A ‘Kickstarter Pack’ is offered to backers who pledge at least $ 239 — it includes the camera and global shipping. Shipments to backers are expected to start this upcoming August.

Get Your Virtual Wings: Oculus Rift Machine Simulates Flight

17 May

birdflapping

Feel the wind on your face and smell the pine sap of the forest as you gaze down at the scenery far below – without ever leaving the ground. ‘Birdly’ is a new machine developed by the Zurich University of the Arts that simulates flight using an Oculus Rift virtual reality headset, a motor-powered machine that mimics flying movements, a fan to fake the feeling of wind and even olfactory feedback tailored to the landscape of your choice.

Oculus Rift Flight Simulator 2

The creators studied the movement of the Red Kite bird and translated it to a sensory-motor coupling that enables you to flap your ‘wings’ as if you’re really flying. The movement of your arms directly correlates to the flying sensation you experience through the Oculus Rift headset.

Oculus Rift Flight Simulator 4

Once strapped in, you’re embedded in a virtual landscape as if you were the Red Kite itself for the closest possible simulation of flight that’s possible without ever actually going into the air. The faster you go, the stronger the air pushed out by the fan positioned right in front of your head.

Oculus Rift Flight Simulator 3

While it’s easy to imagine Birdly becoming a fixture at amusement parks, so far, it’s just an art installation, with no plans for commercialization. The creators say there are a few tweaks still needed to keep users from getting sick during the flight experience. This device is just the latest in an intriguing line of creations using Oculus Rift to bend reality, like a recent Gender Swap experiment that allows the user to switch to the point of view of someone of a different gender.

Suburb-Terranean: 70s Bunker Home Simulates Day & Night

10 Sep

underground bunker home

It is a dream home like any other of its era, with brick walls, sliding doors, stock windows and shingle roofs as well as a lawn, garden, trees and pool. The difference? It is set two stories underground in Las Vegas, Nevada, where the faux flora never wilts nor does it grow, and it is for sale.

underground home day night

If this real-life 1970s home seems like something out of a science-fiction movie, you may be remembering the film Blast from the Past, in which the protagonist spends decades underground in vintage fallout shelter styled after a mid-century suburban home and garden.

underground house kitchen pool

Listed at 1.7 million dollars, this foreclosed property looks conventional at street level, but hides a stunning set of secret spaces below, including two bedrooms, three bathrooms, a kitchen and every other space you would expect inside and outside of a single-family house on the surface.
