Video: Curiosity rover captures 360-degree panorama of Mount Sharp on Mars, showing changing landscape

NASA’s Curiosity Mars rover recently explored Mount Sharp. The mountain is 8km (5 mi) tall and is within the 154km-wide (96 mi) basin of Mars’s Gale Crater. Curiosity captured a new 360-degree panorama at Mount Sharp, revealing its diverse terrain and shedding light on the area’s ancient environment.

NASA writes, ‘Images of knobbly rocks and rounded hills are delighting scientists as NASA’s Curiosity rover climbs Mount Sharp, a 5-mile-tall (8-kilometer-tall) mountain within the 96-mile-wide (154-kilometer-wide) basin of Mars’ Gale Crater. The rover’s Mast Camera, or Mastcam, highlights those features in a panorama captured on July 3, 2021 (the 3,167th Martian day, or sol, of the mission).’

Studying the region has been a long-term goal for the Curiosity mission, which is now in its ninth year on Mars. By studying the layers of Mount Sharp, scientists hope to understand how the environment of Gale Crater dried over time. Similar changes in mineral composition are seen across the planet, so understanding Gale Crater should pay dividends in understanding other parts of Mars.

‘The rocks here will begin to tell us how this once-wet planet changed into the dry Mars of today, and how long habitable environments persisted even after that happened,’ said Abigail Fraeman, Curiosity’s deputy project scientist, at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California.

When Curiosity landed on Mars on August 5, 2012, its primary mission was to study whether different Martian environments could have supported microbial life in Mars’s ancient past. Lakes and groundwater once existed within Gale Crater, and scientists want to use Curiosity to understand better what happened and how Mars changed over time.

Looking forward, Curiosity is currently working its way up a path between Rafael Navarro Mountain and a towering butte. In the coming year, Curiosity will drive past these features and enter a canyon. It will then revisit Greenheugh Pediment.

Video: iFixit is currently showing a live iPhone 12 teardown

If you’re wondering what all Apple managed to pack inside its iPhone 12, repair site iFixit is currently hosting a live teardown of one of Apple’s latest smartphone on its YouTube channel.

The review started at roughly 1:20pm ET, but it’s still going on and is available to watch from the beginning if you’d prefer to take it all in. If iFixit comes across any interesting surprises, we’ll summarize them in an update to this article.

Lexar is showing off a PCIe 4.0 SSD with 7GB/s read sequential speeds

According to technology publication Where Consumers Come First (Wccf), storage manufacturer Lexar is working on a prototype PCIe 4.0 SSD that’s capable of achieving sequential read speeds up to 7GB/s.

Wccf doesn’t share too many details about this prototype SSD, but does say the M.2 PCI-Express 4.0 SSD drive, which uses a 96-layer TLC-NAND, was able to hit ‘6442 MB/s in sequential reads and 4246 MB/s in sequential writes’ using CrystalDiskMark and IOMeter benchmarking programs.

These speeds far surpass the speeds currently found in most PCI-e 4.0 SSDs, which tend to max out with read and write speeds of 5GB/s and 4GB/s, respectively. The drive is backward compatible with PCIe 3.0 slots, but in order to get the maximum speeds, the drive requires a CPU that supports PCIe 4.0. Currently, only AMD Ryzen processors offer PCIe Gen 4 support, so Intel processors, which only offer PCIe 3.0 support at this time, will be limited to the maximum speed of the PCIe 3.0 slots.

According to Wccf, the SSD ‘is planned to be available in 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB capacities.’

Chinese satellite captures image showing both Earth and the Moon’s far side

China’s Longjiang-2 satellite has captured an incredible image featuring both the far side of the Moon and Earth in the background. The data was received by the Netherlands’ Dwingeloo Radio Telescope from an amateur radio transceiver built by a team at China’s Harbin University of Technology.

The satellite first provided the team with partial images of the Moon and Earth back in October, but then was inactive to avoid interfering with China’s Chang’e 4 Lunar mission. The satellite resumed activity on January 19 and captured a time-lapse, including one featuring the Moon’s far side and Earth, on February 3.

According to the team’s initial report, the images have been color corrected by radio amateurs. A team shared an uncorrected version of the image on Twitter, seen above.

Video: A humorous short showing the struggle of waiting for pre-ordered camera gear

Regardless of whether or not you suffer from Gear Acquisition Syndrome, more commonly referred to as GAS, you know what it feels like to have to wait for camera get to your doorstep. This holds even more true for pre-ordered camera gear and SkyVista Productions has created a cheeky video making fun of the struggle of waiting for new gear.

The three minute film, titled Letter, pt.II pokes fun at the Blackmagic Design Pocket Cinema Camera 4K, a camera first announced back in April 2018 and is still being released on a limited schedule. It was shot in just two and a half hours according to SkyVista with ‘the impetus behind this short [being] to test the audio capabilities of the BMPCC4K in a real-world movie shoot setting,’ ironically enough.

A Nokia 9 PureView promo video has been leaked showing off its 5 camera arrangement

We’ve seen rumors of a new Nokia smartphone with a penta-lens camera setup floating around the Internet since last September. Now these rumors have been all but confirmed and it looks like we are pretty close to an official launch of the device.

Website mysmartprice.com has published what looks like a promotional video for the as yet unannounced device. In addition “professional leaker” Evan Blass posted an image of the new device on his Twitter account. In the video the device is called the Nokia 9 PureView and can be seen with the rumored penta-lens camera on the back.

According to the video, the camera captures five images simultaneously when the shutter is pressed. This results in more light being captured than on conventional cameras and therefore produces better-than-usual low light capabilities. Images can also be refocused after capture, but there is no talk about zoom performance.

The new Nokia will allegedly also come with a 5.99-inch “PureDisplay” that supports the HDR10 standard and features an in-display fingerprint reader. The device will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipset and 6GB of RAM. 128GB of built-in storage are on board as well.

While general specs are pretty much in line with other current high-end smartphones, the upcoming Nokia’s camera definitely will stand out from the crowd when the phone is made official. This could happen pretty soon and we’d expect the Nokia 9 PureView to be announced at the Mobile World Congress in February at the latest.

Sony releases short film showing off Xperia XZ Premium super-slow motion mode

Sony Mobile has released the first super-slow-motion short movie that has been completely recorded on a smartphone. All of the movie’s scenes were recorded by 120 amateur videographers from 21 countries on the Tróia peninsula near Lisbon, Portugal. The footage was shot under the direction of award-winning director Chris Cairns and using the new Motion Eye mode of the Sony Xperia XZ Premium smartphone that is capable of capturing moving images at 960 frames per second.

Showing dynamism: EOS 80D breaks new ground for Canon low ISO DR

Our testing shows that Canon’s EOS 80D features a sensor with greatly improved Raw dynamic range. The results appear to confirm the company has moved to a new sensor design with lower read noise.

Previous Canon sensors have conducted the analogue to digital conversion step away from the sensor, an approach that contributed noise that limited dynamic range at low ISO settings (while still allowing the excellent high ISO performance that Canon’s CMOS chips built a reputation with). The sensors in the EOS 80D and EOS-1D X Mark II appear to have an on-chip ADC design that conducts the conversion within the sensor, shortening the electronic path and preventing this noise building up. Let’s take a look at the 80D’s Raw DR performance in a couple of our studio tests.

Exposure Latitude

In this test we look to see how tolerant of pushing exposure the 80D’s Raw files are. We’ve done this by exposing our scene with increasingly lower exposures, then pushed them back to the correct brightness using Adobe Camera Raw. Examining what happens in the shadows allows you to assess the exposure latitude (essentially the dynamic range) of the Raw files.

Because the changes in this test noise are primarily caused by shot noise and this is mainly determined by the amount of light the camera has had access to, the results are only directly comparable between cameras of the same sensor size. However, this will also be the case in real-world shooting if you’re limited by what shutter speed you can keep steady, so this test gives you an idea of the amount of processing latitude different formats give.

As you can see, the 80D is contributing less noise to its images than the 70D did, and this difference will be evident when you try to pull shadows up. It isn’t quite a match for the Nikon D7200$ (document).ready(function() { $ (“#imageComparisonLink2211”).click(function() { ImageComparisonWidgetLink(2211); }); }), but it’s enough that in real-world use, the files should have similar – if not slightly more – processing flexibility than the Canon EOS 5DS$ (document).ready(function() { $ (“#imageComparisonLink2215”).click(function() { ImageComparisonWidgetLink(2215); }); }), despite the latter’s larger sensor!

Sony releases a6300 videos showing AF tracking and 8 fps live view burst performance

Sony has released a video showing the AF tracking and 8 fps live view burst of the newly announced a6300, as well as a video demonstrating AF with subject tracking in 4K video.

The camera appears to have impressive AF subject tracking accuracy, following not just the dog but the dog’s face in the demo. We’ll reserve judgement until we get our hands on one, but previous Sony cameras had a tendency to wander off to other areas of the subject when using general subject tracking, so these results indeed appear impressive. The expansive 425-point array also mean the camera can track the subject to almost any point in the frame, and all of these points purportedly work with A-mount lenses mounted via a LA-EA3 adapter (we expect Canon mount lenses to work as well, with appropriate adapters).* Have a look below.


Sony a6300 ‘4D Focus’ demo


The a6300 also potentially addresses one of the largest shortcomings of mirrorless cameras for action shooting: the often stop-motion playback of last-shot images, as opposed to a live feed, when shooting continuous bursts. We recently reported on Nikon’s calling out of this particular weak point of mirrorless cameras, so Sony’s response in the a6300 today seems timely. Essentially, the a6300 offers a live feed in the EVF or on the LCD during 8 fps continuous shooting, in between what seem to be very short blackouts. This should make it much easier to both pan the camera and still keep your subject in the frame, or keep your selected AF point(s) over your subject. 

The video above, in addition to one Sony presented at the press event earlier today, demonstrate a promising live feed during 8 fps bursts, but ultimately its utility will be largely dependent on the length of those blackouts between shots. Sony claims that the length of blackouts is competitive when compared to a <$ 1000 DSLR.

While that might seem like a relatively low bar, the fact that Sony is getting a live feed off the sensor at all in between shots at 8 fps represents significant progress in the realm of mirrorless cameras. In comparison, a DSLR doesn’t have to do anything but return the mirror to get you this ‘live feed’ through the optical viewfinder between shots.


Autofocus in video


Sony has also released a video demonstrating impressive AF in 4K video recording with native mount lenses. There appears to be little hunting, with fast refocusing and even subject tracking available during movie recording. Have a look above.

This should be a boon for videographers, assuming Sony now allows one to easily specify the subject before tracking it. On the note of specifying a subject, it’s a huge shame that a touchscreen isn’t paired with this capable video AF system for focus point selection.

At least on paper, we think that these advances mark some significant progress for mirrorless (it’s too bad we can’t say the same for the a6300’s ergonomics), and we’ll be curious to see how the systems perform when we get our hands on a production a6300.


* It remains to be seen if subject tracking is available in any mode save for ‘Wide’ with 3rd party lenses though: subject tracking has been severely limited with 3rd party glass on the a7 II and a7R II due to the inability of the photographer to specify the subject, since it’s only available in Wide area mode.
